They had been locked up for days, Raisel couldn’t keep track of how many days it had been exactly. She knew it was occasionally day and night from the small light that streamed through the very high window in her cell. The only connection to the outside world.

She had never been trapped all her life, not for any reason whatsoever, it felt like she was going to lose it any moment longer she spent trapped. The guards would occasionally come and serve unpalatable food, suddenly she longed for the wild berries in the forest and the streams where they drank water from.

And if she was willing to admit it to herself or anyone else, she missed her companion, the man with whom she had travelled through cities in search of a gem that had been found long before she was born. She needed to meet with him, she had questions that needed to be answered. Surely she wasn’t the only one who had noticed the sense of understanding between him and the dragon.

At that moment when they had tossed him to be

One minute she was running to find Fury the other minute she was above ground level, high up in the air held in place by a very large dragon. Yes, she had indeed asked to see a dragon but she hadn’t intended to be picked up by one. Esmeray’s instruction had been clear; go to my house, get your supplies to grab your horse and come back here, while you do this avoid getting caught again. She had protested initially but Esmeray had sworn on her life that she would ensure Dragomir’s safety. Raisel had followed the instructions to the latter, on her way to Esmeray’s house, she spotted a lot of guards littered about like they were in search of something. So to avoid getting caught she had hidden and tried to get past them. All of a sudden there was an uproar and people began to run Helter Skelter. They had pointed to the sky and she had looked up at that moment to see the largest creature she had seen. Somehow, she couldn’t bring herself to move, she stood rooted in her spot and stared at

  • A DRAGON TALE    Alistair

Dragomir stood patiently outside waiting for Raisel to return. After the talk with the bartender. He had woken up with a banging headache and he couldn’t remember what they had talked about in full. However, one sentence kept ringing in his ear: however, you can make things right with this one. That is what he had done. He dressed up the next day without a care in the world of all the things that could go wrong with coming to meet Raisel. However, things had gone smoothly with no hitches whatsoever. She stared wide-eyed at him, it was surprise at first, her features softened to an emotion he couldn't recognize at first glance but there was no longer anger in her eyes. She showed up dressed in leather, her hair tied back in a ponytail. Except for her missing knives, she did look like her old self again. She waved at the small family that had harboured her and they waved back beaming with smiles. He turned to her, the excitement not leaving his eyes, his hand outstretched towards her

When he landed on his feet, she dropped his clothes on the floor, right in front of him and turned around, She clutched at her chest, fingers trembling, as if trying to keep her racing heart from leaping out of her body. She turned around to face him when she was sure he had changed into his clothes she was wrong, however, he was still struggling into his shirt. “Do not do this again”, she warned, her fingers were shaky, her lips quivering in fright. He burst into laughter. “How is this funny?" she asked, her voice trembling with fear. “You should see your face right this minute”, he pointed out, “I figured out now we didn’t have Fury with us, we needed a faster means of travel" “No!”, she snapped, “We are going to walk wherever we have to, or next time give me a heads up before lifting me like that?”, she shrugged, her arms folded across her chest, "I mean it is only fair that I am informed before I am lifted thousands of feet about the ground level" “Heads up, okay duly noted”,

  • A DRAGON TALE    Trolls.

They had hired horses with which they rode in search of the nearest seer in town, they had been directed to meet with one just outside town. They both rode in silence before Raisel broke it, “I don’t see any signs of life anywhere around here” “The one man who gave me directions was sceptical about it” “Where do we go from here?”, Raisel questioned. He pointed over to the grove, “There, we move head-on north, it’s the only house in the hills according to him” They rode faster towards the grove, till they got to the entrance, which was thick with trees. Dragomir slowed down his pace, he raised his hand, an indication that she should halt. His keen eyes scanned the area in one sweep, “It is eerily quiet, I have a bad feeling about this..." “Good thing I got my sword then…” He glanced at her, “Someone’s in a mood” “I miss Fury”, she confessed. He nodded, “I do miss you clinging unto me while I ride”, he moved further into the grove not giving her time to reply. Raisel was stunne

  • A DRAGON TALE    Islandia found us.

Dragomir held her tightly as they dove into the portal, when they appeared on the other side, they stopped to gaze at the beauty that was Islandia. Dragomir, despite the countless times he had seen it, still had the same reaction. He was always astonished. The clear blue sky and the sun seemed to be in harmony of their own, casting down a glow like never seen before. A little distance from where they stood, there was a pool, water as clear as crystals flowing freely down a fountain. Beautiful flowers of variant colours were what made Islandia colourful. It was like mother nature herself had carefully tended to Islandia and had given her best to it. Raisel stared speechlessly as different animals scurried away from plain sight. Even the insects seemed to be colourful and much bigger than usual. A colourful butterfly landed on her finger, the purple and pink pattern with touches of white was intricately designed. And then there were the beautiful humans and creatures that walked about

  • A DRAGON TALE    Merriment and Loss.

The whole of Islandia was in merriment, there was a colourful array of beautiful silks, beautiful harmony, food and drinks. Everyone was either dancing, singing, playing, drinking or eating. There was a ray of hope in Islandia again. Their prince was back, there was a future to look forward to. Raisel's silk skirts billowed in the breeze, she drank the wine of very fine berries, and she looked ahead as the crowd made merry under the beautiful night sky. If she thought Islandia was beautiful in the morning, then she didn’t know the right adjective to describe the nighttime. It was a starry night and a full moon, everywhere was lit with nature’s best lights. She sipped the fine wine and looked ahead, her thoughts strayed to earlier today to how Dragomir had defended her against Sahar and had declared his trust for her. It made her heart swell for joy, she didn’t realise she was smiling… “A penny for your thoughts?”, Dragomir appeared from behind, “I’ll give anything to know the reason

  • A DRAGON TALE    Saint Virgin.

Votigern was having one of his usual parties, it was these celebrations that kept him sane and in control of things, he was on the topmost floor of the Goldcrest Tower, one of his many acquisitions. The inside was painted in obsidian colour, there was a high table where he and a few other distinguished guests sat. A few steps down was a very large space where the other wooden chairs and tables were littered about. A glass chandelier with lit candles hung just above their heads. The glass windows were shut for it was late at night, the curtains were red with streaks of gold and they draped the windows. Save for the red carpet that draped from where Votigern sat to the large grand entrance the rest of the floor was made out of glass marbles still in obsidian colour. The men and women gathered were people of different calibre and all walks of life but if Votigern was entirely true to himself, the guests in attendance were mainly low lives and truants, these were the kind of men who foll

  • A DRAGON TALE    Goodbyes.

“All the other elders are dead, either killed grotesquely or taken as captives, I narrowly escaped”, Yophiel explained, “With your return, I can finally close my eyes and join my ancestors” “Do not say those words Elder Yophiel", Dragomir chided, "You are invaluable to us and your wisdom will be greatly appreciated. They entered a tent secluded for only elders. When they got a point, he shifted a chair and pulled out the rug. There was a small trap door, he unlocked it and motioned for them to follow him. Dragomir let Raisel pass before he followed behind, they walked down a flight of stairs, “Was this where the stone was kept?”, Dragomir asked. “Yes in the very heart of this place”, Elder Yophiel answered. “No one knew where it was, Votigern must have been very crafty to convince you all to lead him to it”, Dragomir said. “He wasn’t crafty, just greedy”, Elder Yophiel answered, “We didn’t lead him to it, he uncovered the location himself. No dragon was ever concerned with its whe

They drank a lot of rum and chatted about everything and nothing. It was far into midnight and the bar was beginning to empty out. Coal didn’t have much customers to attend to, so he was able to engage them. Coal took one long sip, “It was always about the ladies when he came here” “No definitely not”, Dragomir argued. “Of course Dragomir” Raisel took a short sip and scrunched her nose in disgust at the awful taste, “Who was it, tell me?”, she bobbed up and down in her seat like an excited school girl. “First it was Esmeray…” “Oh”, she interrupted, her face fell. “Then Raisel…” “Oh shut up Coal!" Raisel was smiling now, “Really?” Dragomir looked at her, “Why do you care so much?” She stared back at him, she couldn’t conjure up any bef

Raisel tossed on her bed, and then she heard it again. She got up with a start, it was still slightly dark but a horse was neighing outside. She brushed it off and went back to sleep but she heard it again but this time it was much closer to her window. It was the early hours of the morning but if a horse was outside her window she had to check it out. She grudgingly got out of bed, it was a chilly night so she slipped on a robe and walked towards her window, she peeped outside but there was no one around or even a horse around. She thought of going outside to check but she did not want to use the door for fear of waking her mother up. Since she got back her mother had insisted on spending the night in her room cuddled up with her for fear of her running off again like the last time. It had taken her a lot to convince her mother that she and found the stone and had no plans of running away without her knowledge. Her words were not enough still until she had threatened that she might

  • A DRAGON TALE    Avalon-Epilogue

As Raisel rode through the all too familiar streets, it hit her again, how could she forget? This was home, the home where she lived with her parents. Where she had made her first mistakes as a child, gotten her first scolding and grown into the strong woman that she was today. It was not the beautiful scenery that got to her, no this time it wasn’t perfection that Islandia was, the clouds were not excessively blue and did not look like soft foams that you wanted to reach out to and take a piece from, there were not much beautiful flowers and trees as the streets in Avalon assumed a more business-like front. Carriages and horses packed here and there, men were smartly dressed and attended to their different businesses. There were no dragons in all the wonderful colours you can imagine, in the most beautiful patterns, Avalon was dull and bereft of loud colours of any kind. Heavens forbid that you wear bright yellow or neon green, the fountain in the middle of the street did not have w

  • A DRAGON TALE    Votigern's Downfall.

Votigern had been travelling for days unending, his only lead to the heart of magic had blown up in his face. So he and his men had taken a well-needed rest. He had a huge party that left him dead drunk throughout the day. He slowly opened his eyes, he had a banging headache. He slowly walked towards the door and opened it, a guard was stationed outside, “Send my food in…with a woman of course” He nodded, “Yes sire” He slumped on the bed, and not long after there was a short knock on the door, “Come on in” “Good morning Lord Votigern”, a lady's voice greeted him. He merely grumbled his greetings. She set the tray of food on the table and walked up to him, “What do you want my Lord?” He thought about it for a while, then he turned to look at her, his eyes unashamedly travelling through the full length of her body. By his standards, she was a beautiful woman. Long brown hair, a petite face and a curvy body accentuated by the tight-fitting dress she wore and extremely tight corsets

  • A DRAGON TALE    The Heart of Magic

They rode for hours unending, stopping at intervals for a short break. It was almost sunset when they arrived at the heart of the earth, the original location of Islandia where the portal once opened. They stopped their horses and got down from them. Raisel reached for the box, it was slightly heavy, she handed it to Dragomir, “I believe this belongs to you” He hesitated, “Raisel…” She shook her head, “No Dragomir, this is not debatable. This rightfully belongs to dragons, this belongs to you…”, she smiled, “And what will I do with this after all?”, she asked, “It will only put a target on my back, I do not know where or how to keep it safe…” He nodded, “Thank you Raisel, thank you so very much. I could not have done this without you” Her eyes glistened with tears, “We make quite a good team”, she smiled through the tears. And more, he said to himself. She reached for his face and cupped it, “It is time Dragomir, you did it, it is time. Time for you to do what you have promised

Allerick rode into Avalon, the royal guards beside him. As soon as he entered the royal courtyard word spread around that he was back. He walked head-on to the throne room, he ignored the greetings on the way like he had not seen them. He was in an awful mood and the reason was clear. He got to the large doors, and the courtier stationed outside quickly acknowledged him, “Your Highness” Allerick did not bother with a reply, he stood still, his hands to his back. After a while, he turned to the man, “Can I see my father Stefan? Or do I have to force the doors open myself?” Stefan bowed immediately, “My apologies your Highness”, he opened the doors, “Prince Allerick, son of King Aldrich, heir to the throne of Avalon is entering the thro… Allerick walked in before he finished. • A DRAGON TALE    Deleria

They slowly rode into the deserted streets of Deleria. They stayed quiet for a moment observing the area. Save for the constant chirping of birds and crowing of roosters it was eerily quiet. There was no sign of human existence. “You know I was thinking”, Raisel said. “Tell me…” “The phrases, the clues we gathered…”, she trailed off, her mind preoccupied, “The clues were talking about Deleria, this is the kingdom that has lost its glory…” “….but will rise again”, Dragomir finished. They rode through the streets but there was still no sign of life. Save for the items outside the beatdown houses that humans used. “Do you think our choice of clothing has chased them inside?” He thought about it only for a while, “Yes they live in fear. Two people in leather and swords are bound to terrify them…” She nodded, “I never really thought about how or where we are to find the stone..” “If it is in Deleria we will find it. It will be hard to conceal it...”, he stated, “I have been thinkin

  • A DRAGON TALE    The King's Treasures

Raisel ran towards Dragomir’s tent, in her hands were a lot of papers. They were guards stationed outside, when they saw her they greeted her and gave way for her. When she entered the chambers, as soon as she saw him, a small smile crept on her lips. It was the cutest sight ever. He was still dressed in his royal regalia that he wore earlier, his crown had tipped slightly but it was still on his head. He laid halfway on the bed, his one leg was on the bed while the other was on the floor. He was snoring slightly, and a half-eaten apple was in his hand. She walked closer to him, her eyes lit up in admiration for this man, now she knew why he had not come to see her earlier. He was exhausted. She took the apple from his hand and set it aside. She laid the books and papers she came with on the bed. She removed his crown carefully and laid it aside. She gently roused him, “Dragomir, I need you to wake up. I have something to tell you” He mumbled some incoherent words but he did not w
