CHARLOTTE

My eyes fluttered open of their own accord the next morning. I had spent most of the night half awake, lying in bed, thinking about everything that had happened. I sat up in bed, mulling over the situation. There wasn’t much I could do to change anything beyond the plans I had already laid out.

An uneasy feeling tugged at the back of my mind; it felt like I could sense danger from a mile away. I chalked it up to my fears trying to cripple my will to get things done and forced myself to look past it.

Sun rays streamed into the room, and I looked outside the window. Soon, Sonia would be here, and I’d have to leave. I glanced at my phone and resisted the urge to pick it up, remembering how it had been used by the Narhzys to track my location. The last thing I wanted was to give them another reason to attack. Sonia’s plan to keep them in the dark seemed like a much better idea, and I was determined to stick with it.

I got out of bed, walked to the bathroom, and turned on the tap

He was wearing a blue shirt and black pants, with a white rose embroidered at the hem of his shirt, which served as a reminder that we were from different worlds.Yet somehow, our realities had intertwined. “Do you ever wonder what would’ve happened if we never met on the plane?” I asked, and he shook his head.“I think we would’ve crossed paths somehow, Ms. Edwards,” he said, smiling.I relaxed as a familiar warmth filled his eyes. “You sound so sure,” I replied, and he put his hand in his pocket.“Yeah, this seems like one of those things you just know,” he answered with a shrug and walked to the door. “Would you like to go to the beach later today? It might help to be out a bit,” he added, and I shook my head.“I’d love to...” I swallowed before continuing. “I have a lot to do today, another time perhaps? CHARLOTTEThe next morning started with us taking a jog around the house. The guards looked puzzled when we set off at dawn, but soon they realized what was happening and relaxed. By the end of the jog, I was breathless but insisted on continuing. A few minutes later, I got the hang of it and went for a second round.Sonia suggested that the training at the gun range would happen later, and I readily agreed. A guard followed me to the apartment to ensure I got in safely, and there was nothing to worry about. It made me a bit uneasy to think that someone had been in here without my consent, but that was the emotion I was trying to overcome.I picked up the bags we had left on the table the previous night and took them to the kitchen. Spending the next few hours cleaning up the apartment myself felt refreshing. There was barely anything to toss away as the house had been cleaned after they ensured there were no bugs. I opened the fridge and saw that they had gotten groceries and added b

CHARLOTTE“I’m sorry for bringing you all the way here, Ms. Higgins,” I said as she walked to the seat. Sonia walked away to address the guards who had just arrived, and we had a moment to talk alone.“Oh, it’s nothing. I understand how sensitive this case is,” she replied and sat down. “I hope you’re feeling a lot better?”“I am,” I answered, exhaling slowly. “I’ve been doing other things to keep my mind from dwelling on it too much,” I added, and she smiled.I turned my gaze to the park and watched people as they walked past, speaking in hushed tones. The kids in the playground were jumping around with toys or fussing about getting on the swings, while their parents tried to hush them or pacify them with sweets. My eyes lingered on the confectionaries, and I started craving something sweet. We hadn’t eaten yet, and I was eager to get a cup of coffee to wake up my body and clear out the drowsiness I was feeling.“I think I’ve got news that can put your mind at ease,” she said. I turn

I looked away and noticed that Sonia was making her way toward us.“Of course, I made a copy for you; I have the other copies locked away in a safe house. I’ll send you the address soon,” she said, picking up her bag.“Thank you for everything,” I replied as she stood up. “I’ll look through this and reach out to your firm about our next meeting,” I added.“I’ll be expecting your call. We’ll need to meet the evening before the hearing, though. Let me know when a location has been decided,” she finished, starting to walk away. She paused, turned around, and looked at me. “Stay safe, Ms. Edwards. You are a very important piece of this case.”“I will,” I answered, looking away as Sonia approached the bench.“The guards will take her back to the firm. Would you like to eat now?” she asked, shoving her hands into the pockets of her blue trousers. When I looked at her, I noticed the bulge of her gun tucked away in the corner of her ja

CHARLOTTE“What do you mean they’re after Thiago too?” I asked, glancing at her. She shook her head.“If he didn’t tell you, it’s not my place to,” she replied, and I scoffed. I thought we were past this. I guess opening up to her about certain things hasn’t brought us as close as I thought.“You can do better than that. He said something about us fighting the same enemy. Those weren’t his exact words, but you get it...” I started, but she looked out the window.“We’ve found a connection between the incident at The Hilton and the Narhzy family,” she began. I listened intently as she explained the silent rivalry between the Mooze and Narhzy families. Both families were business partners at one point, a formidable force in the corporate world, expanding their ventures far and wide. But someone from the Narhzy family decided they wanted more—a higher stake in the shares than what the founding fathers had previously agreed on. His family backed his decision. This angered the Mooze family,

CHARLOTTEI spent the next few hours alone, and I detested it. It was nice to be back in the apartment, but I felt so annoyed, I couldn’t appreciate being in my own space again. Well, I wasn’t technically alone, given that I walked past the guards who were sharing a beer at the door on my way in, and I knew one would be here soon to hand me my things. But it still felt lonely. I chalked it up to spending the night elsewhere and trying to settle into feeling comfortable here, and I took the bags in my hand to the kitchen. I had left the file on the sitting room table with the intention of reading it before I ate, but my cravings overwhelmed my sense of curiosity, and I was happy to ignore it for a bit.“It’s not going anywhere anyway,” I said and ignored it for a little longer. As I moved around the house, I pondered the exchange with Sonia. She had never lost her cool around me, and as much as I was annoyed that she wouldn’t tell me everything she knew, I understood her frustration wi

CHARLOTTE“Hello, Maria,” I said into the receiver and waited for her response. It had been two hours since the training session with Sonia. I was aching in different parts of my body, but I had learned a thing or two about handling a gun and the perfect stance to take before shooting.Deep down, I hoped I’d never have to use the gun. I considered learning how to use it a necessity, but if push came to shove, I hoped I’d never have to put this new skill to use. I knew the people I was up against had zero compunction about taking a life if it meant achieving their goal, but I had never killed anyone. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to sleep well at night if I did, and chalking it up to self-defense wouldn’t help the situation, either.“Hello, Signora,” came the reply. Her voice was so calm it unnerved me. “Are you alright?” I inquired. “You sound… different.”“I’m okay, just exhausted. I’ve had a lot to do today at the estate,” she replied, but deep down, it felt like she wasn’t telling the

CHARLOTTEI dropped the phone on the bed and started pacing around the room, thinking about the possibility that Thiago would’ve gone to Milan, but that didn’t make any sense. Why would he go there? How did he find his way to the estate, and what did he want? I had so many questions, and none of the answers I could come up with made any sense. I heard my phone ring, stopped walking, and picked it up.“Signora? Are you alright?” Maria said, and I let out a short laugh.“I’m not sure. I’m sorry I hung up so quickly. I’m confused...” I started to say and paused as my thoughts darted to and fro in my head.“Nothing to be sorry about. I assumed it’s ‘cause you were shocked after figuring out who it was,” she replied. I pulled the phone away from my ear and put it on speaker.“Yes... about that. I’ve been thinking, it makes no sense that it’d be the person I think it is,” I answered, folding my arms. “Makes absolutely no sense. How did he find the estate?” I added, frowning, trying to remem

CHARLOTTEElena’s trial had concluded, and she had been sentenced to life imprisonment in a maximum-security prison. I wasn’t sure if the verdict truly satisfied me, but knowing she would be locked away for a very long time, unable to pose a threat to me or anyone else, filled me with reassurance.I decided to visit Thiago, who had returned to Milan to support his friend during the trial. I sent him a text asking if we could have dinner together; there were things I needed to discuss with him and I wanted his honest opinion. He readily agreed, and the next day, I boarded a plane to Milan. The entire flight, I couldn’t shake the gnawing feeling that this would be the last time I set foot in this city for a very long time.As soon as I arrived, I went straight to the estate to speak with the staff. I was still undecided about selling the villa, but if they were willing to stay and take care of the place in my absence, I would consider keeping it. When I spoke to the chef about this, he

ROGERIOI had been visiting Maria’s grave every week since my memory returned. Mostly out of guilt. I felt responsible for what had happened to her in more ways than one. If I had listened, if I had stopped Elena before she spiraled, none of this would have happened.Maria would still be alive, and perhaps, Charlotte would still be here too. But it was too late for “maybes” and “could-haves.”I hadn’t returned to the office yet. There was nothing there that my grandfather and mother couldn’t handle, and I needed to be alone. This place, the cemetery, seemed like the perfect escape. It had become a ritual. Each day, I knelt by Maria’s tombstone, remembering our time at the estate. She had been the mother figure mine never was, and losing her had affected me more than I could have imagined. I hated myself for it. As I sat there, lost in grief, I heard a branch snap behind me.I turned, expecting Thiago or one of the guards checking in on me. But when I saw who it was, every nerve in my

CHAPTER 148 CHARLOTTEThings in L.A. had been going smoothly, but my heart was still in Milan. The case remained unresolved, making a return seem like a foolish idea, yet each passing day filled me with the temptation to board a flight and see things for myself. The air here carried a tension of its own as the reveal Thiago and I had planned drew closer. I wanted to delay it further, but there was no point, it was better to get it over with once and for all.School was the only thing holding together any shred of sanity I had left, and I didn’t take it for granted.I allowed myself to grieve Maria and heal at my own pace, though the days dragged on, making it feel like there was no coming back from such a loss. While I tried to focus on the silver linings, I still felt alone, even with Thiago’s unwavering support. I hated how lost I felt deep down. Two weeks later, I decided to damn the consequences and visit Milan. What was the worst that could happen? If things went terribly wrong,

ROGERIOWe had returned to Milan, and the police dropped by the house to question me about the accident, the trip, and a million other things, but Thiago wouldn’t let them past the gates after the first interview. In his words, I needed time to recuperate, and this was true. I had gone from feeling much better to being disoriented.I couldn’t tell if it was the barrage of questions or the flashing lights from the press trying to get pictures of me when I came out of the apartment, but I certainly needed a break from everything. Things were moving too fast, and to top it off, I was having occasional headaches. My memory was still hazy, but I would occasionally remember things, only for some parts to remain out of reach, leaving me struggling to recall. It was a continuous struggle between trying to stay in the present and drifting into fragments of the past, but I tried to maintain some composure and hoped that things went as planned. My mom and grandfather occasionally came to visit,

CHARLOTTEAfter carefully processing the information I had uncovered, I decided to return to Milan to warn Rogerio about Elena. I chose not to inform Thiago, knowing he would try to stop me.Besides, he had told me it was my prerogative to do what I felt was right, and I fully intended to do just that.Upon arriving in Milan, I went straight to the detective I had previously hired. Though he had mixed feelings about my return, he remained in charge of Maria’s case, which made things easier.I laid out everything I had learned about Elena’s involvement in the attacks and her plans for Rogerio. When I refused to disclose my source, he assured me that they would treat it as an anonymous tip to protect my safety while they investigated further.I asked if I could speak to Rogerio directly, only to learn that he had already left the city, with his last known destination being Mykonos. The realization hit me, he had been following me.That only reinforced my suspicions. If Elena knew he was

ELENARealizing that I had made such a grave mistake kept me on edge. I hadn’t heard anything implicating from the media or Rogerio, but I was still nervous.I had stayed away from the public eye and ensured that my return to the city hadn’t made any headlines. It was enough that the topic had shifted from my disastrous wedding to the attack on the Thuthai estate and Maria’s death. The news hadn’t mentioned anything about Charlotte, and I started to wonder if Rogerio had brought her up just to rattle my nerves.“Well, if that was his plan, then he succeeded,” I muttered to myself, wondering if I had gone too far in ordering the men to attack his vehicle.I hadn’t wanted anything serious to happen to him, just enough to make him come back home and give up his search for his ex-wife. But the silence from his end over the past few days was starting to bother me.I didn’t want to show up at his mother’s estate uninvited; she must be irritated with all the chaos surrounding her family, and

The last thing I remember was getting off the plane and the car somersaulting several times in the air.I didn’t know where I was or what exactly had brought me here. I got up from the ground and tried to brush the sand off my clothes when I realized that I was injured in a few places, but it was nothing serious. The car, however, lay turned on its back, tires rolling in the air, which smelled of petrol and something else. I looked at the car and realized that there were people trapped inside. I wasn’t sure how I had gotten out, but I had to help them out too.I tried to move and realized that I had sprained my ankle. I didn’t realize how terrible it was earlier because my body was still recovering from the shock. As I tried to move my limbs, my body let me know that it had gone through much more than I could reckon.
