Her head was throbbing so badly she almost felt the need to throw up. Fighting against the awful pain that was crippling every inch of her body, Nicola opened her eyes very slowly, squinting, trying to get images into focus, trying to understand what was going on, where she was…
She found herself in a dimly lit room. There were no windows and the only furniture in the small space was the filthy bed she was lying on. The smell was awful... like she was in the middle of a dump field.
“What is this place…?” Nicola whispered, trying to stay as calm as possible.
Nicola attempted to sit up and realized she was tied to that bed. One end of the rope encircled her wrists, while the other end was tied to the headboard. Images of what happened came upon her like a landslide. At that point, fear raced through her and Nicola struggled to break free.
“Oh, come on…” she said slowly, trying not to let her kidnapper know she was awake. “Come on… Please…”
But the damn rope was like a boa constrictor, way too tied around her wrists.
“It won’t work, Nicola…” a male voice said.
She felt pure ice going up and down her spine.
“I’ve made sure you can’t escape.”
How come she was held prisoner?
Who was he?
Nicola glanced up at the man. He looked like a demon from hell, all dressed up in black from the ski mask he had on his head to the clothes he wore.
“How… how do you know my name?”
The man sighed.
“I can’t answer that.”
“Why am I here? Why are you holding me prisoner in this filthy place?” she asked.
Her tone was an unhealthy mix of frustration, fear, and rage.
“So many questions… Again, I can’t answer any of that,” he said, moving closer.
“Who the hell are you?”
“I’m sorry, but you can’t know my name.”
She took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
“Ben shot you… Why aren’t you hurt?”
He grinned.
“Because I’m a smart guy and I like to think of everything and come prepared. Unlike that aggressive little bastard, I wore a bulletproof vest, Nicola.”
“Who’s your boss? Who paid you to kidnap me?” she asked.
“I can’t…”
“Yeah, yeah… You can’t answer anything.”
Nicola felt a moment of sheer anger.
“Why don’t you take that mask off and face me like a man, you, fucking coward!”
A flash of irritation appeared in his eyes and he struck Nicola on the cheek.
“You’re going to pay for that.”
Tears sprang to Nicola’s eyes.
“You won’t get away with this, I promise you,” she said coldly.
The figure cocked his head to one side.
“Oh, sweetheart… I will get away with it.”
“Why are you doing this?” Nicola demanded again. “I don’t know you and I’m sure I haven’t done anything to deserve this.”
He leaned down and caressed Nicola’s face with the back of his hand and struck her again.
“You are a little whore… And he has to pay for what he has done.”
“Who are you…?”
“No more questions. I’ve put it off long enough.”
His hands went to Nicola’s blouse. He grabbed handfuls of the material and ripped it open. The buttons went flying around the room. Fear such as Nicola had never known before came over her.
“N-no, p-please don’t.”
She tried moving away from him and found she could not. The rope restricted her movement.
“Oh, sweetheart, calm down… I’m not going to rape you.”
Her kidnapper started laughing cruelly.
“I’m going to play with your body. Yes… I’m going to burn your skin and carve your flesh. So, don’t bother fighting. It won’t do you any good. Now, I’m going to go out into the hallway and get the things I need. Wait until you see what I have in store for our wonderful time together! You’re going to go crazy. Maybe you could even enjoy what I’m about to do to you.”
Nicola pulled at the rope, the rough cord digging into her wrists. Sweat coated her skin and her heart pounded in her ears. She thought of all the people she loved and knew she would never see them again…
Never tell them how much she loved them.
Tears filled her eyes and spilled over. She closed them and prayed that her death would be quick.
“Open your eyes, Nik. I want you to see what I’m going to do to you.”
“Don’t call me ‘Nik’, you, sick fuck!”
“Well, open your eyes NOW… fat bitch!”
“Fuck you!” Nicola snarled, refusing to obey his command.
He chuckled softly.
“You’re full of fire and spirit. I wonder how long it will take me to break you. Tell me, Nik, have you ever heard of a branding iron? They’re generally used to brand big cows like you…”
Nicola’s breath caught in her throat. She opened her eyes to find him standing over her. In his hands was an iron rod with the letter ‘W’ on the tip. The letter was glowing bright red.
“Now… where shall I mark this stupid cow?” he asked laughing like a madman.
SEVEN MONTHS EARLIER There had to be something she could do, but what? Nicola Rhymes looked at her surroundings and sighed. She jumped at the chance to leave her past behind, come to another city, and plan her future here, in Long Beach… And now…? Well, she was in over her head. She had always been the one who wanted out… Out of the family, out of the drama, out of an unhealthy relationship, out of everything. Well, no one told her ‘be careful what you wish for, sweetie!’ because now she was stuck in a tiny apartment in the worst neighborhood in Long Beach, with no clue what to do. With no light at the end of the fucking tunnel.“This situation is slowly killing my spirit,” Nicola murmured. “If only Daphne would send me a sign…” She put her head in her hands and sighed. On the computer screen in front of her, was her budget for the next three months. No matter which way she plotted and planned, she only had
The night security guard of the ‘Echols Enterprises’ got up from his chair the moment he saw Blake.“As always, you’re the last one to go home, Mr. Echols…” he respectfully scolded Blake. “Busted... again!” Blake replied gently in a tired voice. “I’m afraid this is the cruel faith of a CEO, Paul: the first one to arrive in the office, the last one to go home.” Blake started walking towards the door but stopped.“Oh, I almost forgot, Paul… How’s your wife? She already had that heart surgery, am I right?”“You are, sir. She’s much better now,” the man replied sighing with relief. “The doctor said the surgery was a success and that he will allow Linda to continue her treatment at home.”“That’s wonderful!” Blake exclaimed and nodded with satisfaction. “There’s no place like home… The perfect place to heal every wound.”“Sir, I wanted to thank you again for everything you’ve done for my Linda. If it wasn’t for your help...”“Paul, there’s no need to thank me. You’ve b
The following morning, Nicola entered ‘Echols Enterprises’ and made her way across the marble-floored lobby to the bank of elevators. The sound of her pumps striking the floor was loud to her ears and she had to resist the urge to tiptoe. At the elevator, she pushed the button and tucked several strands of long blond hair behind her right ear. When the elevator arrived, Nicola stepped inside and pressed the button for the top floor. The doors slid open a minute later and Nicola walked out into a classy reception room. Daphne sat behind a desk talking on the telephone. She glanced toward Nicola and acknowledged her presence with a wave of her well-manicured hand. While she waited for Daphne to end her phone conversation, Nicola looked at the painting on the wall in front of her. It was of a catamaran sailing across the blue waters of a sea… or maybe an ocean. The sun was hanging high in the sky casting brilliant shades of white and yellow on the
He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck.“I hope you won’t think of my curiosity as a lack of respect towards you. Since you talked about checking my past jobs, I thought it’s only fair for me to know all about your… Ehm… situation.” Blake nodded and Nicola felt calmer.“You are right. Well, my little girl has had three nannies in the last two years. The first one had a difficult time following my rules, the second one liked to sneak her boyfriend into the house at night and the last one had a nasty habit of smoking... and I’m not talking about cigarettes only. She said it was therapeutic. I don't allow this kind of thing near my daughter.”“I see,” Nicola added and shifted in the chair. “I can assure you, Mr. Echols, I don't smoke. I don't have a boyfriend, but if I did, I wouldn't be sneaking him into your home. It would be disrespectful not to mention completely unprofessional. Finally, I don't have a problem with following rules.” She grinned.“As lon
“Daddy, wake up! Let’s have breakfast! Wake up! Wake up!” Blake felt Iris's small hand pat his left cheek, then the right one. He opened his eyes and stared at the little girl who was standing beside the bed. She was wearing shorts and a t-shirt with a picture of Anna and Elsa from the Disney cartoon ‘Frozen’ on the front. Her brown hair was up in pigtails, the left side was slightly lopsided. Taking his eyes off her, Blake glanced at the clock on the bedside table and saw it was a few minutes after seven-thirty. He reached out, grasped Iris gently, and lifted her onto the bed. She curled up next to him and he kissed her forehead.“Good morning, my sweet ray of sunshine.”“Good morning, Daddy,” Iris answered.“Tell me, baby girl, does Alma know where you are?” Blake asked. Iris shook her head.“Yeah… I didn't think so,” Blake said dryly. He brushed Iris's bangs out of her eyes.“Sweetie, in order to have breakfast together, I need to get up and
He walked over to the huge window and started talking on the phone. She looked Blake over, him standing this way giving her a new view of him. He was dressed in an elegant suit. His upper body was muscled and tight against the fabric… his entire body was perfectly sculpted and Nicola knew he would be hard and muscular all over. His face was defined by a strong jawline and the sharp planes of his face. His hair was dark and slightly longer on top, but brushed back off of his forehead. Despite all of this, it was his eyes that took her breath away, today more than yesterday. They were a deep blue and piercing. The moment she entered the living room, something happened… It was something she didn’t feel that much the day before, in his office. Blake looked at her and Nicola felt as though he was looking into her soul. His gaze felt so familiar. Like she knew him from another life… Nicola shook her head, trying to refocus on the t
Nicola glanced around the table at everyone. This was her first lunch in a new house, with people she didn’t know but, somehow, she was feeling… at home. Like Alma, Bruce and Albert were her family... like Iris was her own daughter. They were all so nice to her. Questions about Blake raced through her mind, but she dared not ask them. Nicola knew whatever she said or did would get back to Blake and the last thing she wanted was to give him a reason not to hire her. Shoving the questions to the back of her mind, Nicola inserted a forkful of peas into her mouth and chewed slowly. Swallowing, she reached for the glass of water in front of her and took a drink. Just then, a pea suddenly shot across her field of vision.“Iris Echols!” Alma gasped. “I can’t believe you just did this!” Nicola heard the little girl giggle. Her lips twitching, she set her glass down and looked at Iris who sat on her right.“Iris, sweetheart, the food Albert so
Claire didn't stay long which pleased everyone in the house, Iris included. Having her dropping by at the mansion unannounced, made everybody feel uneasy. Once she left, Nicola called Blake and then took Iris upstairs to her bedroom. They put a puzzle together, played with play dough and colored in coloring books. Afterward, Nicola read to Iris and put her down for a short nap. While Iris slept, she straightened up the room. She was putting the crayons back in the box when Blake strolled into the room. He walked to the bed and leaned down to kiss Iris on the head.“Mr. Echols… You're home early,” Nicola whispered.“I couldn't stay in the office. After our conversation, I found it hard to concentrate,” Blake said softly. “My mind was here… On you and Iris. How is my little ray of sunshine?”“Iris is such a wonderful little girl. She’s even more resilient than you gave her credit for,” Nicola kept on whispering. “The moment her mother left the mansion, I saw Iris tra
ONE YEAR LATER… “Bedtime, munchkin,” Nicola said from the living room doorway. Iris, who was lying on the floor, watching cartoons, jumped up and ran toward the door.“Come on, Olaf,” she said to the dog following her religiously almost everywhere.“Did you pick out what you want to take to show and tell tomorrow?” Nicola asked as they made their way upstairs.“Yes, I did,” Iris replied. “I’m taking the seashell Aunt Daph gave me.”“That’s a wonderful idea! I believe everybody will like that. They can put it to their ear and listen to the ocean,” Nicola exclaimed and took her little hand in hers. “Let’s say goodnight to your daddy. He’s in his office.” They stopped outside Blake’s office and Iris knocked on the door.“‘Come in,’” Blake called out. Iris opened the door and entered the room.“It’s bedtime, Daddy,” she announced. Blake checked his watch.“Already? Well… you’d better give me my goodnight hug and kiss.” Nicola smiled.
The next morning, Blake and Nicola entered together the Long Beach Police Department. Paul was waiting for them in there. He showed them the way to the interrogation room where Damien Crewe was about to be brought.“Nik, are you sure you want to be present during this?” the detective asked Nicola after she sat in front of the two-way mirror and placed the crutches near her. “You might hear some ugly things…” Blake watched his wife. Before leaving the mansion that morning, he’d asked her the same thing, afraid Nicola might have a breakdown or something. Her reply was a simple ‘yes’ followed by a soft smile.“Uglier than what I’ve been through? Yes, I’m sure, Paul,” Nicola replied in a determined tone. “I MUST be here. This man took away too much of my sanity, my energy, my time with Blake and Iris. It’s time to face the monster and put an end to this. It’s time to move on with my life.” She looked up at Blake and smiled. She didn’t look stressed or worried
Long after Daphne had gone home for the day, Blake sat at his desk, deep in thought. He was thinking of Nicola and the words they had exchanged in anger. ‘What you’re planning to do is wrong, Blake. And you’re going to lose me. Forever!’ ‘And what about our little girl? What do you think it would do to Iris to lose her daddy?’ Those words were the ones that stood out more than anything in his mind. The idea of Nicola leaving him, walking out on their marriage, and the thought of not seeing Iris anymore, scared the hell out of Blake. More than going to jail for breaking into little pieces the son of a bitch who hurt the woman he loved. The last thing Blake wanted was to lose Nicola and the life they had together.“Echols, you look like you lost your best friend,” Norman said, strolling into the office.“Not yet, Norm, but I could,” Blake replied. Norman arched an eyebrow.“Care to explain that to me?” Blake
A week later found Nicola sitting alone in the living room, gazing out the window. Rain was coming down and beating against the windowpane. While she watched it, Nicola thought about her life before being kidnapped and tortured.“I used to be so happy… Now I feel frightened and depressed…” she murmured. “Thank God for Blake and Iris… They are my reason to get out of the bed every morning.” The therapy was working but not as fast as everyone hoped it would. Still, she kept on attending every session, repeating herself to be patient. “Mind if I sit with you for a while? Bruce asked from the doorway. Nicola gave the cushion beside her a pat. Bruce crossed the room and sat down.“How are you doing, Nik?”“I don’t know… Okay, I guess,” Nicola replied. Bruce reached for Nicola's hand and held it between both of his.“It will get easier, dear. I promise you it will.”“You don't know what I'm going through,” Nicola said angrily. “So don't tell me
“Daddy…” Blake glanced up from the book he was reading and gazed at Iris. She was standing in the doorway with Olaf at her feet, and she had a sad look on her face. He closed the book and placed it on the table next to him.“Come here, sunshine.”Iris ran to Blake and climbed onto his lap. She settled in the crook of his arm.“What's wrong?” he asked.“I went to your room to see Nik…” she muttered.“Okay…”“But I didn’t enter because she was crying… I didn’t want to bother her.” He took a deep breath and pressed a kiss to the top of her head.“I see…”“Daddy, why is Nik crying?”“She is sad. When you're sad, don't you cry?”“Yeah.”“Something really bad happened to her and it’s going to take a little while for her to feel better,” Blake explained, caressing her head. “But don’t worry… She is going to be alright… Everything is going to be alright.”The little girl laid her head on his shoulder.“Oh, okay… I'll paint her a picture.”“This is a great idea. Nik adores
Nicola was released from the hospital a few days later. Before she left, she insisted on finally seeing Benjamin. Since Blake was still pretty reluctant about this painful reunion, to get her way, Nicola threatened Blake to go and stay with Norman and Daphne.“Okay, darling… But let's make this brief,” Blake said, pushing the wheelchair down the long hallway. “I want to get you home as soon as possible.”“I'll try not to take too long.” Nicola adjusted the shawl she wore around her shoulders and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, the cuts on her arms throbbing as she moved. Halfway down the hall, Blake stopped and knocked on the door on his left. He heard Benjamin replying and opened the door. Careful not to bump Nicola's broken leg against the door, Blake wheeled her into the room and parked the chair next to the bed.“I was wondering if you were going to come and see me,” Benjamin said to Nicola.“I will leave you two to talk,” Blake said, then kis
The next morning, Blake awoke with an aching back and a stiff neck. Groaning, he slowly rose from the chair beside the bed and rubbed his lower back. After kissing Nicola, who was still asleep, he slipped out of the room and made his way down the hallway to a coffee vending machine. Once the coffee was ready, he took a cautious sip of the steaming liquid, then started walking slowly toward Nicola’s room. When Blake reentered, he found a nurse redressing Nicola's burn. Not ready to face the most devastating and painful proof of her torture, Blake quietly returned to the hallway to wait for the nurse to finish. While he stood there, drinking his coffee, his thoughts turned to last night and anger sprang to life inside of him. The urge for revenge swept over him and he fought for control of his emotions. The time for payback would come soon. Claire will feel his rage… She will…“Blake.” Hearing Daphne's voice, he turned and saw her and Nor
He opened the door and looked out at the detective March.“My wife is ready to answer your questions.” The detective moved past Blake and strolled toward the bed.“Thank you for agreeing to see me, Mrs. Echols.”“It's Nik,” she told him softly.“Oh, alright,” the detective replied. “Then, call me Paul, please.”“Okay. Have a seat,” Nicola invited him. The detective sat down on the chair next to the bed.“Before you get started,” Blake said, glancing down at Nicola, “do you need anything, darling?”“No, sweetheart, thank you. I just want to get this over with. But you should sit down.”“I'll try to make it as brief as possible, Nik.” Nicola turned her head on the pillow and gazed at the detective.“Good… Then, maybe I should tell you right away that I know the name of my aggressor…” Both of them looked at Nicola like she was half crazy. She took a deep breath and watched as Blake was slowly sitting on the side of the bed.“Nik, are you
While waiting for the doctor to come out and speak with him, Blake was sitting in the waiting room. He was leaning forward on the chair, his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands. Every fiber of his being was screaming for him to find the doctor and demand answers to the questions that were eating away at him but he also knew he had to keep his composure… for Nicola’s sake.“Dammit, Nik! I failed you… I promised to keep you safe and look what happened…” Blake kept whispering. “It’s all my fault… I’m so sorry, my love…” Tired of sitting on that damn chair and doing nothing, Blake stood and moved toward the window. While he glanced out into the darkness, he thought back over the past several hours, since Alma’s phone call… ‘Mr. Blake, you must come home… Ben has been shot… and Nik… Someone kidnapped her…’ Her desperate voice on the phone iced the blood in his veins. As long as he lived, he will never forget her chilling, utterly
