Karen's POV

The sound of my phone alarm buzzing woke me up from my slumber. I stared at it for a few seconds before realizing I was running late for work. Lena’s visit had left me with a sense of clarity, but I still felt the weight of the conversation hanging over me as I got ready for the day.

I wasn’t sure where things stood with Liam, and even though I’d promised myself to take things slow, part of me couldn’t help but feel uneasy. The past few days had been a whirlwind, and I wasn’t sure what was next for me—if I was ready to face Liam or if I was still too broken to trust anyone again. But I knew I had to keep moving forward.

After getting ready in my usual office wear and blouse, I grabbed my keys and headed out the door, making sure to lock it behind me.

The brisk morning air hit me as I stepped outside, the familiar hum of the city starting to awaken around me. Monday morning was always the business and today everything inside of me was buzzing with both stress and nervou

Liam hadn't spoken through the drive to the gala, all he said was just his simple compliment.‘You look beautiful.’ but this time, the usual spark in his eyes was distant. I asked him why he didn't come to the office today but his eyes stayed transfixed on the steering wheel with his hands tightening on the wheels saying that he had something important to take care of.The entire drive was quiet and the city light blurred together in a haze. The silence was thick, not the kind that was comfortable and soothing, the one that made my stomach churn. When they first reached the gala center, Liam's demeanor suddenly changed, he no longer gave the usual kind smile and small baited glances but his face was stoic cold and expression did not even give me the slightest smile even if it was once. He looked like

The universe decided to throw me yet another shitty thing in my face, in this case, the shitty thing was none other than–Liam Falcon.I caught a glimpse of him seated on my couch through the transparent glass. My jaw clenched instantly.“Who let in?” I roared as I entered into the office. Liam gaze flickered to mine a smudged smile playing in his lips. The urge to push him up the skyscraper came into thought again but I pushed it aside,I was really considering it cause he was getting on my last nerve. “I let myself in, aren't we supposed to be like business partners now? I didn't think I needed permission to come over to my work buddies place now do I ? “One of the reasons I didn't want to accept his help was this, boundaries being crossed where I'd drawn a thick like. It didn't make any sense and I wasn't about to let it fade.“I don't know what game you're playing at Falc

Devon's Pov.Liam left the room the next moment leaving something awake within me. I didn't want to give him the satisfaction that he had finally gotten under my skin but as much as I try to deny it I couldn't, he had, and this time it was extremely deep.I couldn't shake off the feeling that Liam had left me with. It was a mix of annoyance, curiosity, and a hint of unease. Heck it wasn’t a hit, it was a lot. Whatever it is he had In stored I was curious, very curious it made me worry, had he by any chance gotten hold of some important documents that could somehow tarnish Grey Tech's reputation, one that I had struggled so hard to build, taking no assistance and building it solely on my own.I had initially had second thoughts in going to the masquerade banquet award but now that Liam had put me on the edge it topped the charts for the main reasons I’d be showing up at the event. What did he have planned for the masquerade award show? And why did he seem so confident that it woul

Karen's Pov.“Surprise, surprise, Mr. Grey.”Liam's words echoed in the room, a smug undertone lacing each syllable. His grip on my waist was suddenly loosen but still firm as if he was making sure I stayed planted at his side for the world to see. I froze, my heart pounding in my chest. The live feed from the projector displayed Devon's face, his face looking almost disappointed with a mixture of confusion, anger, and betrayal. His jaw was tight, his eyes narrowing as if trying to piece together a puzzle he hadn't known existed until now.I wanted to sink into the floor. I looked back at Liam searching for some answers. “W-what's happening Liam?” My voice cracked but there was no reason from him. How did he know about me and Devon? We were never really anything to the public and we rarely ever came out together so how?“Let go of me,” I pulled myself away from shoving at Liam’s chest. But he didn’t move.“Not yet,” he murmured near my ear, his voice calm, almost casual. “The sho

Karen's POVThe chill of the night air wrapped around me as I stepped out of the banquet hall, the weight of humiliation and betrayal were suffocating. The murmuring from the crowd of high standing men and women still echoed in my ears, just when I thought I could make a reasonable change in my life, all of it came crashing down in just one night. The heel I wore clicked against the pavement, making my steps uneven and my body staggering. I bent down and took off my heels.Hot tears ran down my cheeks as I walked away from Devon, and this time, his words didn't hurt me or leave a dent in my skin. His words were something that were long overdue. Even though I couldn't see him, I could still feel his piercing gaze burrowing into my back but they were all too harmless now. My heart shredded at the thought of Liam's words, everything he'd said to me had truly meant nothing, they were just lies, the sparkle, glimmer and even the hint of hope in his eyes had all just been a lie. Liam had

Devon's PovI can't remember the last time I walked into a night bar, I'd long closed that door and I didn't think I was ever going to open it back up, but here I was again, sitting at the bar like the man I swore I'd never become again“Another shot.” I yelled even though the bartender was just few inches away from me My words slurred just enough to betray how much I’d already had. He gave me a wary glance before pouring another round of tequila into the small glass in front of me.“You sure about this, man?” John, the bartender and also the only person I knew at the bar, asked.“Just pour it,” I growled, grabbing the glass and downing it in one swift motion before he could argue. The liquid burned its way down my throat, but it didn’t numb the ache in my chest like I’d hoped. The ache wasn’t new. It had been there for weeks, maybe months since Karen left. A feeling of emptiness I couldn’t shake but still always tried to deny but no matter how hard I tried to I could always still s

Karen's PovThe beeping sound wakes me up from my sleep, a throbbing headache following, I open my eyes revealing a white wall above me with machines connected directly into my body. Wasn't I just in the car so where was I now? An aching headache swamp my thoughts as I remember the scene from before. An accident, I stumbled into an accident and was now present in the hospital. “She's awake.” I hear a voice from the room, a nurse immediately running into the room. With my eyes wider now I scan the entire hospital, how did I get here ? Who brought me here? Piles of questions kept swapping my mind. The cab driver, the road, lights and…Devon. It all came crashing in, Devon and Liam.He can't see me like this, it'd only make his pride grow, giving him more reasons to talk about me. Wincing in pain, I managed to sit up from the hospital bed, disconnecting the drugs going directly into my body. Karen's Pov.“You're pregnant? For how long Karen? Why didn't you tell me?” Devon asked, his face twisting in a mixture of both anger and confusion. The doctor and nurse had already cleared out leaving me and my beloved husband to bond over the baby and all he could do was shout.I'd already had enough of his nonsense and wasn't about to put up with it again.I laughed dryly. “Can you hear yourself Devon? I had an accident and just figured I am pregnant and this is all you have to say?” His eyes soften a bit, a look I'd never seen on him before. “You didn't know?” “Of course I didn't, I'm also as surprised as you.” He shook his head slightly, taking a step closer to me before seating on the chair opposite my bed.His hand rested at the bridge of his head and then he bent down. “I don't know what I've done Karen.” He said lowly, his voice barely above a whisper. “I just couldn't take it anymore, starting from Stephan and now Liam, I just couldn't.” My eyes widened. EpilogueSix Months LaterThe shopping mall bussied around Karen as she wove through the aisles, her heart hammering in frustration."Austin!" she called, glancing around the shelves filled with colorful toys.No answer."Paris?" she tried again. She spun around, her eyes scanning the store, but the two little troublemakers were nowhere to be found. A pang of panic crept up her spine. Jordie, who had been helping her keep an eye on them, jogged up, her face mirroring Karen’s concern."I swear, I just saw them two minutes ago," Jordie said, glancing around.Karen let out an exasperated sigh, running a hand through her hair. "They're fast. Too fast."She pushed past the rows of toys, checking behind shelves and peeking into play areas, but the kids were gone. Her heart pounded harder. Then, suddenly—"You might want to be careful with these two."A deep voice—steady, familiar.Karen turned sharply, and her breath caught in her throat.A man stood a few feet away, holding both Austin and

My breath hitched as a swarm of armed officers stormed in, their guns raised in precision, their movements swift and practiced.“Hands in the air! Nobody move!” a commanding voice barked. The room shifted instantly. The arrogant smirks on Liam and Troy’s faces faded, replaced by something I had never seen before—fear.“What the hell is going on?” Liam hissed, his eyes darting toward the doorway. And then she walked in.Lauren.Clad in a sleek black jacket, her presence radiated confidence. She stepped forward, unbothered by the chaos around her, her gaze sharp and unyielding."You forgot about me," she said, her voice dripping with amusement.Troy’s jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing. Karen's POV I forced my eyes open, but my mind felt sluggish, struggling to catch up with my surroundings. A dull ache pulsed at the base of my skull, and my body felt impossibly heavy, as if every limb had been weighed down. The sharp sting of cold air sent a shiver down my spine, and a strange, salty scent filled my lungs. This wasn’t the alley. I blinked rapidly, my vision adjusting to the dim light. Instead of damp concrete and graffiti-stained walls, I saw open space. The ground beneath me was rough and uneven, dirt and gravel scraping against my skin as I tried to move. A cold breeze brushed against my skin, sending a shiver through my body. My limbs felt heavy, but I forced myself to move, shaking off the haze.Where had I been? The last thing I remembered was the alley—Devon tied to the chair, Troy’s grip on my arm, Liam’s smirk—then, darkness. As my vision slowly sharpened, I realized we weren’t there anymore. The damp, suffocating alleyway had been replaced with an op

Karen’s POV“Alright, they’ll be back this afternoon.” Jordie’s voice came through the phone, warm and reassuring. In the background, I could hear the kids giggling and playing. My heart ached with how much I missed them.“Let them stop over at the ice cream shop, okay? There’s no rush,” I said with a small smile. The response was immediate—excited squeals and the sound of tiny feet shuffling around.“Mommy!” Austin’s voice piped up next. “Luna and Lucas told us stories!”I chuckled. “Oh? What kind of stories?”“About a pirate and a lost treasure!” he said excitedly. “But Lucas says the treasure was actually a puppy!”“That sounds like a fun story,” I mused. “Did you like it?”“Yes! But Aiden said the pirate should’ve had a pet parrot instead.”Aiden’s voice came in the background. “Because pirates always have parrots, Mommy!”I laughed softly. “Well, I can’t argue with that.”“Can we tell you the story when we get home?” Austin asked hopefully.“Of course, sweetie.” I smiled, my hear

Devon’s POVThis was it.The final move.If I wanted to fix the mess I had created, if I wanted any chance of making things right—not for myself, but for Karen—this was what I had to do. Even if it was the last thing I ever did.Stepping out of the cab, I adjusted my coat and walked toward the elevator. The security at the front barely acknowledged me; Liam had always been arrogant enough to think no one would dare come after him.The elevator ride up was suffocating each passing second amplifying the weight pressing down on my chest. As soon as the doors slid open, I stepped into the hallway leading to Liam’s office. The air carried a faint scent of cigars and leather, a familiar stench that brought back too many memories I’d rather forget.I pushed open the doors without knocking.Liam was seated behind his oversized desk, a whiskey glass in one hand, his other hand lazily flipping through documents. The moment he saw me, his lips curved into an amused smirk, his dark eyes glinting

Devon’s POVThe night was thick with silence, the kind that settled deep into the bones and made a man question everything. The cold metal bars in front of me felt heavier than they should, the dim flickering light above casting elongated shadows across the small, suffocating cell.I leaned back against the wall, running a hand through my hair as my mind spiraled into the past—into the mess that had landed me here.Karen.Her name echoed in my head like a ghost refusing to be forgotten. I remembered the accusations, the way they had thrown my name into the fire, claiming I had been the one threatening her and the kids. The sheer disbelief in her eyes had stung more than I cared to admit.Had it really come to this?A sharp rattling sound jolted me out of my thoughts.I straightened, my instincts kicking in as I turned toward the cell door. Karen’s POVMy breath caught in my throat as I stared at Lauren. The weight of her betrayal hit me like a punch to the gut. I had suspected, but now the reality of her involvement was undeniable."You've been sending me messages," I said, my voice trembling with a mixture of rage and disbelief. "Threatening me, threatening my kids. What the heck do you want? And then you go ahead and kill somebody. You're a psychopath." The words spilled out, the anger rising in me with each passing second. Her lips curled into an almost sinister smile. She didn’t even flinch at the accusation. Instead, she laughed—a soft, mocking sound that made my skin crawl."I hate you Karen,” she said. "And yes, I’ve been sending some messages. But it was only to check up on you. Nothing much. Just checking how things were going." Her voice dripped with sarcasm, as if everything she had done was just some petty game.I could feel my blood boiling. "You killed somebody," I snapped. The tension in the room was suffocating, thick with the weight of everything that had just happened. Troy stood in front of me, his arms crossed, his gaze hard and unyielding.“They have leads, Karen,” he said, his voice firm. “And all of them point to Devon.”I shook my head, my stomach twisting uncomfortably. “That’s impossible,” I whispered. “Devon wouldn’t do this. He—”Troy cut me off, stepping closer and placing a file down on the desk in front of me. “We just got this,” he said. “And I need you to face it.”Slowly, I reached forward, my hands trembling as I flipped the folder open. Devon's pov.The next day, I walked into Karen’s office, my mind still reeling from the night before. The memory of her lips, her body pressing against mine, and the raw emotions we had shared clung to me like a second skin. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, couldn’t stop feeling it.I had barely slept, replaying every detail in my head, wondering what she must be thinking now. Did she regret it? Did it mean anything to her? Did it mean as much to her as it did to me?Her office door was slightly ajar, and I caught a glimpse of her inside. She was seated at her desk, her expression neutral, focused on something on her computer screen. But I knew her well enough to notice the tension in her shoulders, the way her fingers tapped absently against the edge of her desk. She was thinking about last night too.I took a deep breath, steeling myself, and pushed the door open fully. She looked up, her green eyes locking onto mine. For a moment, neither of us spoke. The air between us felt char
