The Devil's Night Bride

The Devil's Night Bride

For Maxine, "normal" is a costume she wears every day. She's an imposter, a forbidden creature hiding in plain sight. But her act is tested when four new students arrive, seeing through her mask as if it were glass. They are like her, but different. Dangerous. And they might be the only ones who can save her from a fate she doesn't yet understand. To survive, she must trust them, but trusting them could mean losing herself—especially to the one whose gaze makes her forget she's supposed to be human.

Chapter: Fifty-two
I could feel him beside me. My head was laying in his chest and I could feel every intake of breathe and I could hear every slow heart beat. I cracked one eye open and I feel like my head was going to explode."Fuck...." I whispered as I close my eyes tightly. "The alcohol isn't treating you nicely yeah?" Damian said which his chest vibrating with laughter. "Hahaha very funny" I rolled my head off his chest laying it gently on the bed. "Oh it is" I felt his side of the bed move and I knew was getting up. My head was all hazy and I remember his handing me some pills. "Max....Maxine" "What?" I groaned."Get up" I heard a girl's voice. "Hmm...." "Don't hmm... Me and get up" "Ash?" I said cracking one eye open. I nearly jumped at how close our face was. "Hey girlfriend!" Chapter: Fifty-one
I slipped my dress off as I got into the shower after a lot of arguing. Damian wanted to get in first but I made a run for it. I know he could've used his vampire speed to out run me but he let me go so.... Cool right. Once the hot water hit my skin, I couldn't think of anything but how good it feels to rinse off the sweat and dirt off my skin. The water ran down my face making me tip my head backwards so the water could hit my face. I then tipped my chin downwards so that the water could get into my hair. "Are you gonna sleep in there?" Damian voice sounded impatient outside the door. "Chill vampire boy " I laughed as I washed my hair drowning out the sounds. After several minutes, I was out. ————— Damian —————As I watched her walk through the crowd to meet me, my heart clenched with adoration. She was so beautiful that it hurt. Her smile grew when her eyes met mine."Look what I found" she smile

His hands where so cold on my cheek as I looked up at him. The sun was getting lower and I was so relived. I was so close to him I could here his slow heart beat. I couldn't feel my legs under his intense stare."Urm... We should keep going if we want to find a place to sleep" i said as I moved away slowly."Yeah you're right" he cleared his throat ."What time do you think it is?" I asked."The sun is going down so... I think it's either 4 or 3 pm let me check my phone" Damian said as he fished his phone out of his pocket "shit it's dead" he cursed as I checked mine too. And it was also dead. "Do you hear that?" I asked. In the distance I could hear a faint sound of what I was hoping deep down was an engine. "Oh my yes!" Damian said as we all looked towards the place the sound was coming from. It was a small pickup truck with an elderly couple in it. The couple where smiling brightly as we approached them."Hi..." I said smiling brightly. "Hola" the woman smiled back and her hu

Chapter: Forty-nine
My head nearly exploded the moment I tried to open my eyes. This hangover is gnarly. I crack one eyelid open and I'm nearly blinded by the sun. I can still feel Damian's cold body underneath me which gives me some relief. But I quickly scan the area to really see where we are. I can remember a little but of detail about last night and I remember falling asleep on the beach but right now, we aren't on a beach. I'm so confused right now. I brought my palms to my head as I pressed it on my temple trying to remember what the hell happened."Fuck........." Damian groaned from beneath me. "I think my head is about to split open" he said in a sexy morning voice that made my already racing heart race some more. "Where are we?" I asked him still looking around."I have no fucking idea* we both sat up right and took in the environment. We where in a wooden cabin which was quite small but how..."I think I remember that the blondie woke us up screaming about the police" Damian said obviousl

Chapter: Forty-eight
My head was spinning as we rode at the back of the truck. The truck kept bouncing up and down and my head moved along with it. Damian convinced me to drink another tequila shot and then another and now, my head hurts badly."I should have slowed down" I said as I took a sip of the water he gave me. He drank more than me but I was the one all drowsy why?. "Where exactly are we going?" Damian asked like I knew where we where going."I dunno they said a pub...""It's my dude's party!" The blonde kid Damian obviously wasn't fond of screamed making me flinch in pain. "Ohh right" Damian mumbled which made me laugh hard. They both looked at me like I was crazy and I'm sure that guys at the front seat heart. I loved the feel of freedom. I loved leaving like this. Taking risks and leaving to the fullest it feels really nice. "You go to that pub much?" I asked to break the unbearable ice of silence. "Yeah when we where younger " he took a sip of his tequila. "Nice that's nice" I was too

Project Dakota: Rising of the dead

Project Dakota: Rising of the dead

For twins Ethel and Elise, the line between dream and nightmare was always thin—and on Paron Island, it has been completely erased. Their idyllic gap year, a sun-soaked mosaic of beach bonfires and reckless abandon, is shattered in an instant. A "project," as the panicked news reports cryptically call it, has gone horrifically wrong, releasing a pathogen that reanimates the dead with a singular, gruesome purpose: to feed. The sisters' bond, once defined by shared secrets and sibling rivalry, is now their only anchor in a world drowning in blood. Driven by a raw, primal instinct to protect each other, they join forces with a few other fortunate—or unfortunate—souls who survived the initial onslaught. Together, this makeshift family must navigate the ruins of their former paradise, where every shadow hides a potential threat and every human sound could be a lure. Ethel, the more cautious sister, finds a hidden strength in strategy, while Elise's impulsive nature becomes both a weapon and a liability. But their fight against the decaying hordes is only the surface of the terror. Whispers of a coordinated presence, of supplies that go missing too conveniently, and of strangers who seem to know too much, point to a more insidious truth: the island's collapse was not a random tragedy. They are being hunted by something that thinks, that plans, that wears a human face. As their hope for rescue dwindles, Ethel and Elise are forced to confront the ultimate horror—that in the midst of an apocalypse, the most monstrous creatures of all are still human.

Chapter: Epilogue
The dust motes were her only companions, the tiny, dancing sprites of forgotten air. They swirled in the single, slender finger of sunlight that pierced the gloom of her room, a room that was not a room at all but a tomb of rough-hewn stone and despair. It was cold, the kind of cold that seeped into your bones and made a home there, a permanent chill that no amount of huddling or shivering could ever dislodge. The walls pressed in, not with a visible motion, but with a heavy, constant weight, making her feel impossibly small, a forgotten trinket on a dusty shelf. In this oppressive silence, the only thing that felt real, that felt like hers, was that crack in the wall.It was more a flaw in the ancient masonry than a window, a long, jagged line that ran diagonally across the stone, wide enough in one place to press her eye against, wide enough to let in that precious, life-giving beam of light. Now, standing on her toes, her bare feet cold against the gritty floor, she leaned into the

Chapter: Chapter Sixty-three
The night after the exile was not a time of rest, but a protracted, collective daze. The shelter, usually settling into a wary quiet after sundown, was instead a hive of subdued, sorrowful activity. Jake’s funeral was to be held at first light, a decision made both for the practical advantage of cooler temperatures and because no one could bear to let another full day pass without laying their friend to rest. The knowledge of it hung over everyone, a somber deadline that made sleep impossible.Ethel moved through the hours in a state of emotional suspension. Her body performed the necessary tasks—checking on the dwindling food stores with Ben, speaking in low tones with Moe and Carlos about rotating watch schedules, ensuring the perimeter was doubly secure in the wake of Marcus’s banishment—but her mind was elsewhere. It was trapped in a loop of memory and anticipatory grief. She wasn’t ready for this. The finality of it, the physical act of lowering a box containing all that remained

Chapter: Chapter Sixty-two
The grim finality of the vote settled over the shelter like a shroud of lead. The words, "The sentence is exile," echoed in the cavernous silence of the hall, a verdict that felt to many not like justice, but like a precarious, half-measure, a dangerous gamble with their collective future. A low, restless murmur rippled through the assembled crowd, a current of disbelief and simmering fury. Exile. It meant he would still be breathing. It meant he was out there, somewhere in the vast, unforgiving ruins, a predator set loose, his rage and psychosis now amplified by a death sentence narrowly avoided. The fear was palpable, a sour taste in the air. People were pissed, their faces etched with a fresh layer of terror. They had wanted closure, a final, brutal line drawn under the horror. Instead, they had been given a ghost, a perpetual boogeyman who now had a very real, very personal grudge against every single soul within their walls.Ethel stood amidst the discontent, her own disappointme

Chapter: Chapter Sixty-one
The first conscious sensation for Ethel was not the pale, grimy light filtering through the dust-caked window of her small room, but a profound, cellular ache, as if every particle of her being had been pulverized into a fine, leaden powder during the night. She did not open her eyes immediately, clinging instead to the fragile blankness of the semi-waking state, a gray, featureless plain where the horror had not yet fully coalesced. But memory, cruel and inexorable, flooded the void. It did not come as a single image, but as a wave, a physical pressure on her chest that made breathing a conscious, laborious act.It was the memory of sound that broke her first: the raw, jagged sound of another human soul tearing itself apart. Elise’s breakdown. Ethel had told her. She had practiced the words in the silent theater of her mind, sanding down their sharp, lethal edges, trying to coat them in a veneer of manageable tragedy. Jake is gone. There was an accident. It was quick. Lies, all of th

Chapter: Chapter Sixty
The wedding was amazing. It was a word Ethel would have scoffed at using just a day before, but it was the only one that fit. In the soft, golden glow of the salvaged fairy lights, with the stars beginning to prick the velvet blanket of the night sky above their fortified walls, the grim reality of their existence had been temporarily suspended. The ceremony itself had been simple, heartfelt, and profoundly moving. Patrick, the unassuming gardener, had spoken the ancient words with a dignity and conviction that belied his usual quiet demeanor. Sarah had wept happy tears. Ben’s hands had trembled as he slid a ring fashioned from a twisted piece of copper wire onto his bride’s finger. The entire shelter had watched, united in a rare, uncomplicated moment of joy. Now, the reception was in full, raucous swing. The makeshift dance floor—a cleared space in the center of the courtyard—was a whirl of moving bodies. Elise, of course, was at the heart of it, her guitar set aside now as she danc

Chapter: Chapter Fifty-nine
The clean, post-shower feeling was a fragile bubble of normalcy, and Ethel knew it was about to be popped by the complex social mechanics of introducing a feral, unpredictable element into their carefully balanced ecosystem. She found Levi where she’d left him, looking slightly less like a startled animal but still radiating the tense energy of someone waiting for the other shoe to drop. His damp, green-streaked hair was a stark declaration of individuality in a world that often punished it.“Come on,” she said, her tone leaving no room for argument. “Time to meet the rest of the family.”He followed her with a reluctant shuffle, his eyes taking in every detail of the common room as if mapping escape routes. She led him towards the far corner, near the large, south-facing windows that flooded the space with afternoon light. This was where the softer side of Birkin Shelter often congregated. Elise was there, carefully polishing the frets of her acoustic guitar with a soft cloth. Lena,

Chapter: Mama
I pushed through the doors of the hospital as I ran towards my mum's room. Ashely texted me the room number so all I had to do was find the damn floor. After a while, I finally sighted the room and I ran towards it. "Ash....."I stopped dead in my tracks as I came face to face with my dad which made my blood boil. I felt the pain all over especially as I looked him over and saw how good he looked. He looked really good and well. Which made everything worse. How can he look so good while I'm suffering. "Addy ....." My mum's low voice broke me out of my trance. "Mama..." I said as the tears I was trying to hold back betrayed me. I took her shaky hands in mine as I squeezed it lightly. "My love ...oh how ....I've...missed....you" she said slowly and I smiled at that. " I missed you too mama..you'll get better" she smiled and she nodded. Squeezing my hands. The door opened and Ashley walked in with coffee for my dad I guess and she hugged me. " Hey there stranger" she smiled "Oh

Chapter: His Toy...
I looked at him from the corner of my eye as we sat on the dinning table eating pasta silently. Well apart from the slurping sound we both made as we ate . I sighed as I looked down at my plate. This was the worst feeling ever the feeling that you're just a toy. I couldn't pin it as sex toy yet cause he has never asked me for sex not like I wanted him to but I atleast wanted him to look at me like a woman not an object. I pushed his bowl away and wiped his mouth . He walked to me and took my plate not caring if I was done eating or not . He just passed me and walked to the kitchen. I sighed as I pushed myself up. I relaxed my tensed shoulders and made my way to the stairs. "Adeline" Emilio's voice made me stop and turn. He walked towards me slowly making me back up a little.. "Forgive my manners" he said looking at me straight in the eye. "I have a hard time knowing when to shut up" I wanted to say something but I kept quiet was he apologizing? I couldn't quite understand. "I'm

Chapter: My husband
‎A problem Emilio and I may have might be the fact that I don't shut up. ‎I say my mind irrespective of who you are and what you are especially what. ‎My dad really didn't help me with this side cause I constantly had to be saying my mind if not i would've been walked over and kept to grovel my way up to the top especially in my line of work. ‎Honestly, now that I'm married I really doubt I have the luxury to keep up with my job. ‎I obviously quit waitressing, tutoring and selling, but dancing is my first love. It is something I can't give up especially knowing how good I am at it. ‎ When I'm on stage, it feels like the whole world is on halt and I am the star of the night. Only me and the chairs and pole. Hearing the cheers make things even better because honestly, I love when my dance makes people feel good. ‎Apart from the boners and crazy words I get called, everything else was blissful. ‎Here I was in bed thinking about how the hell I was supposed to leave the house wi

Chapter: New Chapter
‎The car ride was as silent as I predicted. Emilio stared out of the widow and I did same. Bth on opposite sides. ‎When we drove into his street I knew it immediately. The roads where beautiful with flowers at the side and fancy streetlights. ‎Large buildings where coming in view and my heart sunk. So .. this will be my new home. ‎We got to the drive way and the car stopped. The driver rolled down his window and typed something in the intercom and continued with the drive. ‎My mouth dropped as the mansion came in view. It was larger than the largest hotel on my street. Damn ‎The car stopped directly in front of the large door and I swallowed hard before stepping out. ‎ Silently, I followed Emilio into the mansion and I looked around in awe. ‎"Beautiful right?" Emilio said and I snapped out of my day dream. "Yeahh.....it is " I smiled as I looked around the house. ‎White tiles covered the length of the room leading to french doors at the opposite end leading to the backya

Chapter: Don Emilio
‎"you look stunning Adeline" Ashley said as we both stared at my reflection. She looked like she was trying hard not to cry for my sake and I squeezed her hands in gratitude. How we ended up here is beyond me. ‎After that dreadful visit, my dad made me understand that it was either this or death. Not like I give a fuck about my dad's life, but my whole family was involved what choice did I have?. ‎To make myself feel better, it's better being a wife than a girl who works three jobs to feed her family. So, I took the deal. And as a plus, my husband to be was literally a Greek god. ‎"Thanks" ‎I was standing in a white slick wedding gown that hugged my side. Revealing all my curves perfectly. I agree I did look pretty but I felt horrible inside so horrible I couldn't believe I was actually doing this. ‎My whole life I never expected to end up here at the age of 25 in a wedding gown getting ready to wed someone I just met once. ‎The painful part was I had nothing to loose

‎ "Adeline... Table two" Cassie said as she passed me the tray. Quickly, I took the tray and went to serve it. I tired to smile really nicely as my back was already aching. And my legs felt like burnt wood. ‎"Here's your food enjoy" bowing down nearly killed me as my back cracked. This is exactly why I was coerced into taking this job. Bottom line I hate it. ‎"Looks like your shift is over ma'am" Cassie smiled and I chuckled half-heartedly. ‎"Lucky me" I said and she handed me an envelope. "Thanks" I smiled stuffing it into my bra. The pay is trash but who am I to complain. ‎ ‎Going home was peaceful. The road was very quiet just the way I liked it. The smell of fresh rain made it even better. ‎Everything is better with rain. ‎ I checked my wristwatch and it was 9pm I guess the store would still be opened. I didn't want a detour but I needed to. Sighing, I walked to the store which was longer than I expected. I got to the store thirty minutes past nine. ‎ I pushed the door
