LOVE AFFAIRS
Pierre Paul Abutu gives a humorous, fascinating and dispassionate narration of the unique intimate and romantic events of his life from teenage to adolescence, and into the early stages of his adult life. This narration revolves around the lives, and relationships of sixteen ladies with whom he shared happy, intimate, eventful and evergreen moments of his life with.
These love affairs occur in Pierre Abutu’s life, at his university, the Augustine Nnamani Campus, Agbani, in Enugu Campus of the Nigerian Law School, Akwa Ibom State and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Due to his religious beliefs, personal convictions, personal principles, metaphysical and supernatural predictions and postulations, the media, intellectual and literary effects in his life, most of these affairs either ended abruptly or amicably. These love affairs also reveal the negative attitudes, traits and deceptive machinations of these girls and ladies. Even though certain unpleasant and resultant effects were never intended at any particular stage, or with any of these girls and ladies, one thing was very clear: each love affair was and would always be evergreen to Pierre Abutu.

Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY THREEI almost blushed at Gahn’s last statement, and soon began to wonder if all ladies thanked the man who (tenderly) deflowered them.“Goodnight Gahn… I love you.”I heard Gahn kissing me through the phone before ending the phone call. I picked up a small box of chocolates, lay on my bed and stared at the ceiling while dropping the cubes of chocolate into my mouth. ________________________________A lawyer once said that every lawyer must be ready and know how to lie on impulse, and in an ‘emergency.’ I smiled at the lie about getting some things from Uselu for my mum. I was standing in front of my hostel room and watching a group of male students playing football on the large field facing my hostel block when a taxi cab drove towards me. I stared at the driver and the occupant in the back seat. The face looked familiar in the distance, and I smiled when the taxi cab slowed down and parked near me.“Pre, what a wonderful surprise.” I walked towards the back se

Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY TWOI was admiring a moving line of soldier ants near the fence of the New Girls hostel, when I beheld Aurelia, Tee and a handful of my female course mates. The distance between us was up to ten meters, but they didn’t notice me, and even if they did, they didn’t behave as though they did. They bought barbecued beef, noodles, biscuits, soft drinks, toasted bread and eggs, sandwiches and bottles of water.I turned and looked away from the soldier ants before crossing my legs. I was sneezing the next moment when A. J. Baby walked towards me in confident and dainty steps.“Good evening Pierre.”“Good evening A. J. Baby, how was your day?”“Fine, fine, fine.” A. J. Baby responded in a deep voice while looking around suspiciously. She wasn’t the type who was into make-up and cosmetics, but I was amused to see her lips adorned with lip gloss on this particular evening.“Hope you’re hearing from your parents?” I asked, as several female students poured out of New Girls hostel gate, in skimpy and

Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY-ONEI returned from lectures some days later and had lunch, before proceeding too study my notes from the day’s lecture. It was past seven in the evening that same day when I decided to go jogging. I jogged around the field facing my hostel lock before heading to New Girls hostel. From New Girls hostel, I continued towards the roundabout and before taking a break at the Chills restaurant. I walked inside the restaurant, purchased a small bottle of water and sipped it in small amounts.I’d barely sat on one of the stools for a minute when I heard the familiar voice and giggle of one of my female course mates. I took another sip and placed the bottle of water gingerly on the granite bar. The voice and giggle were unmistakable. I turned and saw Hailee sitting on the right thigh of a tall and light-skinned male student. He had a large amount of hair on his head, and Hailee stroked it with her fingers at intervals. She wrapped her black turban in the same manner she’d wrapped it that fateful n

Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTYI pocketed my mobile phone and headed to a nearby sandwich and noodle joint to get dinner. In less than twenty minutes, I’d arrived at the joint and placed my order, while several cars sped behind me.I thought about Patt, Laurie and her panty incident. Although it was weird and funny to think that Laurie still saw Patt after that particular incident, I simply concluded that Laurie had very poor taste in her choice of male companions. So Some minutes later, I carried my packaged noodles back to my hostel room when my mobile phone began to ring. Initially, I thought it was A. J. Baby, but was surprised when I eventually brought my mobile phone to my face to check the caller Id. It was an MTN number that wasn’t saved in my contact list. I answered the call and discovered it was Pre’s younger sister – Tee.“Hello Pierre, this is Tee speaking.”“Hello Tee, how’s the evening going?”“The evening is cool. Listen, I need to get some clarifications from you about my sister…”“What are you dri

Chapter: CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE“Oh, scorpion…” A. J. Baby’s countenance changed immediately, and she suddenly felt ashamed of trying to slap me. “Is that how you slap people at the slightest pretext?” I rose to my feet while A. J. Baby began to stammer in shock, surprise and embarrassment.“It’s getting late. Let me see you off to your hostel… come on.”“Sure…” A. J. Baby looked downward, probably thinking of what to say. She must’ve thought that I was attempting to harass her sexually. We came down from the roundabout, and walked to the New Girls hostel in silence.“See you on Monday, then.”“Good night Pierre. I’m sorry about the way I reacted. It’s just that…”“Skip it, don’t worry. I understand.”My hands went into my trouser pocket, as I turned and began to walk away from her. I’d barely walked three steps when I heard A. J. Baby’s deep voice behind me.“Please, wait. Please do not tell any of our course mates about what I did…”“It’s okay,” I said with a smile. “Nice perfect guys don’t snitch.”“Thanks.” The

Chapter: CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHTMy heart almost jumped out of my mouth as I heard Gahn’s last statement. I thought of Bussy, Elo, A. J. Baby and Pre.“I’m fine Gahn. It’s just that Patt must’ve done something bad which I do not know yet, but might involve a girl.”“Anyways, I’ll need your razor-sharp brilliance to quickly edit something at the business centre.”We took a short cut through a green field and headed for the business centre. Students weren’t much, as several of them had travelled that morning to several destinations. Gahn soon settled down to a desktop computer and plugged in a flash drive into the USB slot of the computer’s CPU. Within seconds, I stared a at a Pharmacology paper on the screen.“Kindly help me edit… for grammatical errors and anything that should or shouldn’t be there.”“I knew I couldn’t refuse Gahn’s request even if I tried to. Her eyes, cheeks, lips and smile paralyzed any form of resistanceI might have possessed. Twenty-five minutes later, I rose to my feet to stretch my body, as s

Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY SIXTimmy knew sleeping was the least of his worries as he brought the bottle of McDonnell’s to his mouth the fifth time. It was three o’clock in the morning and he also knew most Ebie initiates would be doing something similar to what he was presently doing, wherever they were. His apprehension seemed to escalate when he noticed his Ebie katana was not on the wooden rack, after his invisible double had returned from the marine sphere. He wished drunkenness would lull him to sleep, so he wouldn’t think about the consequences of what had just happened. He brought the bottle to his mouth the sixth time and cursed himself for contracting only one assassin to get rid of me. He thought about his money, cars, company, girlfriends, investments and stocks, but didn’t think about penury.I woke up on the altar the next morning to see Tarami kneeling beside me, peering into my face like a nurse.“Hope you’re better?” she whispered.“Let’s go home…it’s all over,” I whispered while looking around the

Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY FIVEInside the church, despite the fading pains on my body from the accident, I knew I had no choice but to maintain that sedentary position, until my invisible double successfully concluded his ‘mission.’I ignored the heated prayers around me, while my buttocks remained ‘stuck’ upon a white plastic chair. It was a good thing the weather was cold and the mosquitoes were at bay, else we all would have been soaked in our perspiration before daybreak.I closed my eyes and opened them again, trying to imagine what was going on in the mind of my invisible double. Although I knew what he was presently doing, I knew there was nothing like the feeling of being there personally. Slowly, I turned my head towards Tarami and saw her praying like her late mother.“You will die the same way you made my leviathan die,” the goddess screamed at my invisible double before she slumped backwards onto the surface of the watery altar and melted on the flat surface. All eyes were now on my invisible double as

Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY FOURAt that moment, I felt sorry for Tarami – for having to put her through the entire stress, knowing fully well she had to be at her desk tomorrow morning in the bank. Saret Andeki had started praying in whispers, while Pastor Alozie opened his large leather Holy Bible.I never intended for anyone to get hurt in the process of carrying out my late mother’s wish. This was why I felt the weight of guilt, as thoughts of all the people I’d delivered since joining Ebie, began to race into my mind.My eyes were still on the door which had since been shut. The circles of prayer warriors had just been formed, and Pastor Alozie looked like a ready medieval General for a much anticipated battle, he was sure he’d win. I only took my gaze from the door after Tarami’s right hand held mine. She bent down and looked at me affectionately, while the other hand stroked my face.“It’ll soon be over Tonye…very soon,” she whispered to me in a soothing voice. I nodded as an usher went around the church audit

Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY THREEI swore never to allow myself to be bothered by a woman again, when I was finally discharged from the specialist hospital, that fateful tenth day of July 2013, with a truckload of medication.Tarami’s magnanimous branch manager had offered her official car and driver to take me home. I said goodbye to the Nigerian, Syrian and Indian doctors and nurses, who’d taken their time to cut and stitch me for more than three months. I was amused at Tarami’s tears of joy, as we journeyed to her apartment that afternoon.“Please drive us to the church….” The driver looked surprised, while he stared at the traffic lights ahead.“Madam said I should drive you home from the hospital, not…”“I want to go to the church and thank God.”“Okay, just drop us and we’ll use a taxi to church-” Tarami cut in. The driver seemed not to hear us until I made one last statement.“If you don’t take me to the church before going to her apartment Mr Karim, I’ll come to her bank tomorrow and tell the manager you drove

Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY TWOAfter an intensive massage one afternoon, I thought about the other Ebie initiates and wished they could witness everything I’d witnessed, especially Diane Orek, in her present state. She was the least of my worries, since one of them had even tried to kill me, by procuring an assassin. Staying in the hospital was frustrating, due to the healing and recovery process, which went on at a snail-speed. Many things had improved in my daily routine, especially my feeding pattern. I now fed myself, though salty, spicy and fried foods were still disallowed from my diet. My body, especially my blood needed sugar, so I indulged in ice creams and sweets on several occasions. As for the portrait, I looked at it at every available moment. Sometimes, I imagined me and Tarami as orphans who were running away from the goddess and dying in the process of surviving Ebie’s pangs, while the time rapidly ticked away. It was the third Sunday in June as he itched for the meeting to come to an end. If he

Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY-ONEGod had never failed or disappointed him ever since he became born-again two decades ago, and he knew he wouldn’t start now. As far as Pastor Alozie was concerned, the major battle at hand was the ‘third stage’ of the Ebie saga he was now faced with. The ‘first stage’ was the attack by the naked demons in my house. The ‘second stage’ was the accident which incapacitated me and the ‘third and final stage’ was the proposed face-off between me, Pastor Alozie (any other ‘interested’ party and the goddess. On the day the last surgical operation was to take place, Tarami and Pastor Alozie were given fifteen minutes to talk with me before I was reeled to the theatre.“I’ll come around immediately I’m through from work,” Tarami whispered as she held my hands.I looked at her smooth face and thought of how my abdomen had been scarred with stitches. The psychologist had advised me to keep recollecting happy thoughts and memories before the surgical operation commenced. This made me smile whenev
