Quell your thirst for addictive Werewolf novels with “The Alpha’s Virgin Tribute”!
Not much is known about Luna Liz, but, judging from her works, she seems very passionate about novels that dabble in predator/prey relations, as well as Dark Romance. Some of her most renowned stories include “Phobos (King of Beasts),” “Cronus (Charmer of Females),” and, of course, the novel under review (“The Alpha’s Virgin Tribute”).
One of the most prominent themes explored in “The Alpha’s Virgin Tribute” is obviously that of gender egalitarianism and how the Werewolf system is often portrayed as a predominantly patriarchal one, in which the Alpha male sits at the tip of the pyramid.
The figure of an Alpha female is not always given the relevance of its male counterpart, but classic Werewolf literature (inspired by past preconceived notions on how wolf packs organize) is partly to blame for this. This novel tries to debunk these assumptions by depicting a patriarchal Werewolf society being challenged by a (presumably) strong female lead.
For the record, this theme is contrasted with the one in “Alpha of Alpha’s” (by the same author), where the habitual patriarchal understanding is further advanced.
The main protagonists in this Romance are Lumina and Deimos, and they’ll draw our attention entirely for this section.
Lumina behaves like a strong and independent woman at times, but she also has many frail spots and insecurities. She doesn’t refrain from crying and showing weakness, even when having already traversed through a very unforgiving childhood, forced to learn many things by herself.
Deimos is a king, deemed the “Alpha of Alphas.” His mere presence exudes authority and power to command, aside from being extremely good-looking. However, as haughty as he appears from the onset, he suddenly turns weak before Lumina, who consistently pokes at his pride.
The novel is, almost in its entirety, told from Lumina’s point of view, and we get to read her thoughts about almost every event that transpires. It’s only after the final epilogue that we can glance at things from Deimos’ perspective.
Lumina assists the Alpha Meeting to the displeasure of those present. She gets scorned by many of the older males in the room, with one of them expressly stating that females don’t belong there. It was quite an important meeting, too, one that had repercussions for werewolves globally.
Suddenly, Deimos makes his appearance, and almost instantly, Lumina’s wolf identifies her mate. She gets overwhelmed by a stream of pleasant yet awkward sexual thoughts, and, for one moment, Deimos is the only person in that room for her.
Soon after, Lumina’s pack gets attacked by rogues, and a gruesome battle takes place. They manage to subdue these rogues thanks to Deimos’ decisive participation, and, in return for said help, he claims Lumina as a “tribute.”
Nonetheless, his overly possessive demeanor will quickly clash with Lumina’s “lone wolf” lifestyle. At a certain point, Lumina would have the upper hand and make Deimos subservient to her. These power dynamics are a constant throughout the novel, as the protagonists’ relationship seems to be grounded more on domination than love or synergy.
“The Alpha’s Virgin Tribute” is full of noteworthy chapters, though these are possibly the most enthralling:
Lumina sees Deimos for the very first time, and in him, she discovers what she describes as her “new weakness.” She just sits quietly as the meeting is underway, not able to convey any words or form any coherent thoughts. Meanwhile, the males in the room are discussing how to deal with the most recent rogue invasions.
Throughout the scene, Lumina struggles with her own passions, not feeling capable of controlling her sexual drives and giving in to Deimos’ seduction. After the meeting ends, Deimos grabs Lumina and commands her to look at him. He then remarks how “wet” she is and, just a moment later, mocks her “Alpha” status in an attempt to weaken her spirits. Lastly, he whispers, “Mate,” while making some highly lascivious advances toward her, signaling a “marking.”
After Deimos saves Lumina’s pack from a rogue attack, he asks for the “old rule” to be enacted. This “old rule” consisted of a tribute levied by the Alpha of the rescuing pack. Lumina can already foretell what he’ll ask for, so she tries to shift Deimos’ focus away from her (to no avail).
As expected, he claims “her” as his tribute, threatening to take some lives and lands were she to refuse. Defeated, she lowers her head and acquiesces to his demands, at least for a while.
The author (Luna Liz) is prone to adorn her writing with detailed descriptions of characters and events, applying a generous dose of flowery language and fluff. Sometimes, this works in the novel’s favor, immersing readers in the scenes. However. she also has the tendency to repeat the same ideas over and over, rendering the reading experience tedious.
“The Alpha’s Virgin Tribute” is a very decent work of fiction with a very compelling premise and theme, though its execution can’t be deemed “perfect” by any stretch.
For one, as commented earlier, the writing style is a tough nut to crack, and readers will oftentimes grapple to find out what exactly is happening in many places. In addition, the lead characters can come off as obnoxious at first, and the female lead’s conduct on many occasions doesn’t appear to match, one-to-one, the “Tough Female Alpha” archetype that the author religiously aims to establish.
In spite of all the above complaints, the novel has its shining moments and authentic tear-jerkers, with delightfully-portrayed erotic scenes to boot.
We’re convinced that, as a whole, “The Alpha’s Virgin Tribute” is an absolute net positive and a genuine treat for fans of Werewolf Romance stories!
