Be a part of Jordan’s search for love in “The Alpha’s Curvy Cinderella”!
Cat Smith is an expert in Werewolf and Vampire novels with not much disclosed in terms of personal details (other than the fact she’s the mother of three kids and loves hot chocolate). Among her most renowned works, we could mention “The Rebellious Omega” and “Broken Beauty and the Beastly Vampire Prince.”
As with all Cinderella-style stories, “The Alpha’s Curvy Cinderella” explores thorny concepts such as parental neglect, mistreatment, and bullying. From a very early age, Jordan has been deprived of a loving home, leading her to question her own worth or whether such a thing as love even exists. This is a common occurrence among people who live in dysfunctional households, as they mostly judge the world around them and its values according to their own private experiences and traumas.
Aside from all that, we also get a hint of body positivity throughout, judging from how the narrative is conveyed and how, despite acknowledging that the female lead is getting bullied due to her body size, she can still get the attention of good-looking males.
In terms of physique, she’s quite a looker, inheriting her deceased mother’s genes, albeit with a slight weight problem (hence the “curvy” moniker.)
Grant is the son of the Blood Moon Pack’s Alpha. He had known Jordan since childhood, and they used to play together for many years. However, his attitude towards her had shifted drastically since then as he was coincidentally starting to hang out with the popular boys at school.
Jordan’s despicable sister and the main antagonist in the novel. She’s more good-looking than Jordan but is equally hateful and nasty.
The entire narration is executed by the main characters, granting readers a closer look into their minds and thoughts. For the most part, the viewpoint switches mostly between that of Jordan and Grant, although we might occasionally find Sarah giving her input.
The novel, almost literally, starts with a bang as Jordan’s drunken father slaps her across the face. He took up alcohol following his wife’s (Jordan's mother’s) death at the hands of rogues. She died trying to save Jordan, her whole body shredded to pieces as her daughter watched in horror.
Following that tragic event, Sarah and “father” would demote Jordan to a sort of “serfdom” status as the blame was pinned on her. The entire pack also turned their back on her, including the Alpha and his family. In this context, Jordan not only had to mourn her mother in silence during all those years, but she also lacked any semblance of a mental anchor to soothe her inner pain.
Meanwhile, as everyone mocks Jordan (who, by this point, is a tad overweight), Grant, who used to be her childhood friend, tries to join in on the “fun,” to Jordan’s disappointment. However, as the latter is cuddling with Sarah, a feeling of guilt starts to creep in. Somehow, he thinks it’s not fair that Jordan has to bear all the guilt for her mother’s brutal death, even though, at the same time, he’s mildly annoyed that he cares so much for her.
After humiliating her sister some more, Sarah encounters Grant in the training grounds and flirts with him, thinking she would make him her mate no matter what, even if that displeased her wolf. What follows is one of the hottest sex scenes in the entire novel.
Jordan accepts a lift offer from Alpha Jaxon, who has been eyeing her for a while. As he was talking to her, she could feel the girls in the surrounding area watching in disbelief as a gorgeous man tried to make moves on her (of all people) instead of them. Nevertheless, Jaxon doesn’t seem to show discomfort.
Next, he invites her to a gathering with his pack, but Jordan looks for excuses not to attend lest her father chastises her for going anywhere other than school.
Cat Smith (the author) showcases mastery of the language and a knack for describing characters and situations in the most creative ways. As a whole, the style comes off as witty and clever, with heavy use of puns and smart comebacks during dialogues.
“The Alpha’s Curvy Cinderella” explores many interesting themes that not many werewolf novels cover nowadays, even when subjects like body positivity are getting more attention by the day. Admittedly, the idea of a fat wolf is not that widespread, but we’ve seen “wilder” cases in werewolf literature that’ll equally suspend our disbelief, so the notion of a chubby werewolf is not really that far-fetched!
On another note, the book is incredibly easy to follow, and the scenes are described in a very immersive and vivid manner (especially the spicier ones). If there’s one thing that this novel has in spades, it’s details!
In addition, while some characters are definitely one-sided (such as Sarah), it’s refreshing to see others with a more complex arc and moral conflicts, like Grant. Jordan herself is not necessarily “chaotic good” (put in D&D terms), but she’s still the ultimate victim by the end of the day, whereas Grant has to deal with his longing for popularity being at odds with his lifelong friendship.
Lastly, it’s nice to see a story slowly building up without unnecessary padding. At no point did we feel that the author was artificially extending the reading time so as to unlock more chapters.
In summary, “The Alpha’s Curvy Cinderella” could give some of the best werewolf novels a run for their money, and it’s a piece of work you should definitely try reading!
