Super Gene Review: Teleportation Technology is Finally a Reality in This Interstellar Age

Author Introduction | Twelve-Winged Dark Seraphim

Not much is known regarding the author other than that he has written two major books: "Let Me Game in Peace" and "Super Gene," the latter being his most outstanding work so far.

1. Main Theme: "Improve Your Genes"

"Super Gene" is heavily built upon the concepts of Darwinian evolution and the "survival of the fittest" motto. From the story's beginning, you'll witness the main character plunging into the bottom of the food chain after his race had reached its peak in technological advancement.

The plot will also likely awaken the reader's craving for self-discovery and awareness of their own potential. Our modern technology has made us forget how things operate in nature at their most basic level, and only when we're deprived of this technology do we realize how tough things can get.

Han Sen (the protagonist) suffers this deprivation and, consequently, struggles at first to overcome the most basic obstacles. However, he later realizes that he was never the weakling he thought he was.

2. Notable Characters in "Super Gene"

The story mainly revolves around Han Sen, though readers will stumble across various exciting side characters as they progress.

Let's go through some of them in more detail, starting, of course, with Han himself:

Han Sen

Han Sen is deemed the weakest hunter in "God's Sanctuary," putting his life in jeopardy while fighting the most feeble creatures. He's also extremely cautious about almost everything he does, overly pensive of all possible outcomes that may result.

The author does a fantastic job of making Han relatable. He reacts in ways many people would find believable, and that's what ultimately clicks with the audience.

Ji Yanran

Ji eventually becomes Han's wife, even though she initially "hates his guts" upon losing a bet against him. However, with time, she starts to develop feelings towards him, especially upon meeting again in an exploration vessel.

She was not the most proficient when it came to combat. However, this did not bar her from showing some skill in many other areas.

Bao'er

Bao'er is presumed to be Han Sen's biological daughter, as she shares 99.9% of his DNA. However, it's later disclosed that she's actually the offspring of a God hall leader. She accompanies Han Sen a lot throughout his journey into the Third Sanctuary.

3. "Super Gene" Point of View

The story in "Super Gene" is presented from a third-person perspective by an all-knowledgeable narrator in the past tense, implying that the events had already transpired.

4. How the Plot "Evolves"

The novel sets off with Han Sen already in God's Sanctuary, killing a black beetle but obtaining no "beast soul" and no "geno points," which are necessary elements to evolve and gain status in this new ecosystem.

The narrator then lays out the background by pointing out how humans mastered teleportation technology. Alas, these teleportation devices would actually send them to an unknown place (God's Sanctuary) where modern technology was rendered useless., making humans powerless against the creatures that dwell therein.

Upon setting foot in this dimension, Han initially resorts to slaying pitch-black beetles for a long time until he encounters a golden beetle. After successfully killing this beast, he obtains a new armor set and a strange-looking crystal he is incapable of identifying.

In the span of thousands of chapters, the novel fleshes out Han's relationship with his family and peers. We also see Han portrayed as an overall clumsy individual even as he grows in strength and knowledge of the new world around him.

5. Super Hot Chapters in "Super Gene"

While it's not an easy feat to pinpoint a specific chapter amid the 3,000+ the novel has, one pinnacle moment occurs just a chapter into the story.

In chapter two, we learn that Han stabs a wolf unicorn in its rear, but the beast turns out to be a hunter called Qun Xuan. This earns him the enmity of the inhabitants in Steel Armor Shelter and the amusing moniker "Ass Freak." This moment of intense comic relief allows readers to immediately sympathize with Han and Qin Xuan.

Also amusing are Han's interactions with Bao'er towards the novel's middle section, as well as with other side characters like Queen, whom he develops a crush on.

6. The Novel's "Writing Dna"

"Super Gene" is written in plain modern English, and while filled with slang and idiomatic expressions, every native English speaker should be capable of understanding what is being said. That said, some role-playing elements may be hard to grasp by those not versed in LitRPG, so beware!

At the end of the day, "Super Gene" is one of those novels that you definitely need to read during your leisure time. It's chock full of fun moments and mysteries to solve. Plus, the majority of the characters (especially Han Sen) have highly compelling arcs. While it's not necessarily devoid of flaws (such as pacing issues in later chapters), these shouldn't stop you from having an enjoyable reading experience.
