Chapter Forty-One

I end up borrowing some leggings from one of my guards, Angie. She was about the same height and build as Cleo. Though the leggings were a powder blue color. I noticed Cleo typically stuck to dark and bland colors, so I was a little worried she would be annoyed by what I brought her. I also got a sports bra from her. I don't think bras are like underwear where you shouldn't share, right? I just knew that Cleo wore these in the past and the one she was in now had left red marks on her shoulders from where it was digging in. Even something as small as that, made me jump into gear in finding a solution for her, to make her that much happier. Why did I care so much? I don't know. I guess it didn't really bother me, I just wan't used to wanting to dote on a woman like this before. I'm not saying I had ever been rude or even cold towards my bedmates in the past, but I always made it very clear I wasn't their partner, I wasn't interested in being their butt-buddy, and I wasn't going to be the

Chapter Forty-Two-Cleo

I never want to leave this place. That's all I can think as Ike and I walk around his pack, him talking happily about what was what and who was who. I met so many people, and I tried hard to remember at least a few of their names. I wasn't good with that kind of thing, so it would take me a while. But I would get it.I didn't want to leave. But I knew I would have to.I had gotten an email this morning asking me to come in for an interview. It was for a personal assistant position with some small family business. I didn't know who I was interviewing to work for, but the pay looked good, and it wasn't too far from my house. I was willing to take the risk.It was time to return to my real life. I couldn't hide in Ike's pack forever. This is your pack too, Cleo. You can't just leave now. That made my heart stop. Ike squeezed my hand forcing me to look up at him. I smile a little at him and wink before refocusing on watching his guards train. He wanted me to see his best fighters, and I th

Chapter Forty-Three

I was being suffocated.Someone was trying to smother me.I was going to die.Stop being dramatic.I finally pry my eyes open, squinting against the bright sunlight streaming through the blinds.I realize I was definitely not being murdered, but Ike had somehow managed to cover my face and upper chest with half his body. His arm was draped across my neck and hanging off my side of the bed. I wasn't used to sharing my bed with someone, and definitely not someone who slept as wildly as Ike did. He kicked me constantly and made weird noises and talked sometimes too. He drooled and stole the blanket multiple times throughout the night. It was a little annoying. And a little cute.I groaned and shoved him off of me. He just turned over and kept sleeping. I shook my head as I crawled out of bed.I pulled his huge shirt and too big boxers off of me and pulled on another pair of borrowed leggings. I really needed to get some stuff from my place. I guess if I was staying here, I really needed t

Chapter Forty-Four

I feel a spark ignite inside me at Thomas's words.A grin spreads across my face, and I straighten out. I hold a finger up and kick my shoes off and peel off my socks. I take my shirt off over my head and throw everything in a pile to the side. "So we're even." I say. Clothes and shoes get in the way.And then I charge at Thomas, moving faster than I knew his eyes could see. I bend down, spreading my knees, bracing my shoulders and slamming into his torso with all of my weight and strength. I hear him grunt as he slams into the ground.I feel someone coming at me from behind, and I quickly spin and push myself off Thomas using his chest as a launch pad. I feel something crack with the amount of force I put into my push off foot.My attacker, the third boy who I hadn't spoken to yet, dodges my attack, and I crash to the ground instead of into him. I use my momentum to roll and jump to my feet. He gives me no time to breathe as he's already closing the distance between us. I barely manag

Chapter Forty-Five

"Wait-" Matt leaps forward, but it's too late. My panther is tearing through my flesh, stretching her fingers and toes and letting out one of her famous screechy roars. He stumbles backwards to avoid getting scratched. My panther dips low to the ground, baring her teeth and swishing her tail back forth. She's staring into Matt's eyes. She is very clearly challenging him. He's the Alpha's right hand man, if he doesn't at least try to win this, he could be seen as a failure, depending on how harsh this pack is.He stands, shaking his head and pulling his clothes off. "Don't get hurt." He says, and then he's gone, replaced by his dirty blonde colored wolf.My panther doesn't hesitate; she leaps forward, claws extended and mouth dripping with saliva. She's in battle mode, and it scares me. I have always thought how much it would suck to be going against her.But Matt's wolf doesn't even flinch as we crash together, my panther digging her teeth into his shoulder. She lets go quickly though

Chapter Forty-Six

The run wasn't really that bad.Even though I had twice as many laps to run, I still finished before everyone else. Besides that, I took the chance to get to know Thomas, Zach, and Noah a little more. They weren't brothers by blood, but from the in-sync way they all acted, I got the sense that they were closer than any blood bond could've made them.Noah was quiet, he hadn't actually said anything since I came up to him after the fight. Not that he wasn't interacting. He laughed when he was supposed to and would shake his head and nod. Maybe he just didn't like talking? We'll crack him, don't worry.Thomas and Zach were chatty as hell. They both kept bringing up the fight, asking why I fought with my head so much. I hadn't really thought about it before, but I guess I did ram my head into a lot of things when I was locked in battle. Even my panther tended to do it.They also mentioned where they had come from. They all used to be a part of a wolf pack that was at war with another. The

Chapter Forty-Seven-Ike

I loved Cleo so much at that moment. In that moment when I saw her putting in effort to work through a problem we were having instead of throwing a hissy fit and running away. She asked me what was wrong, I told her, she thought about what I said, and then apologized and explained why she did what she did. And I understood, I really did. She was in a new pack filled with people that didn't trust or understand her. She was on the defense twenty four seven. I too would feel a need to prove myself. But I didn't want her to feel like the only thing she was good for was fighting and killing. She hadn't made connections with a ton of people, but each one she had made was a strong one.I was proud of her, and it made me fall even more deeply in love with her.I wanted to tell her. I wanted her to know how I felt about her. But was now a good time? Or should I like, take her to a cliff overlooking the ocean and declare my undying love for her?I shook my head. I was overthinking this. I looked

Chapter Forty-Eight

"You know I've been thinking." Cleo begins as she walks over to what I assume is her bedroom. "It might be time I get rid of this place." She opens the door and turns on a light. I can see a dresser and the corner of a bed, but that's all from the doorway.I was a little surprised she had been the one to bring it up, but relieved. It made it a lot easier if we were on the same page. Rich, coming from you."Can you get out of your lease?" I ask, looking around her place. I had been in here before, but the novelty of seeing this part of Cleo hadn't worn off yet. It just looked like somewhere Cleo would live. Warm and comfortable. It was small, but very cozy. I could tell she had made this place into her home."It'll probably cost me a pretty penny, but I don't see why not." She says as she comes huffing out of her room with a bag slung over her shoulder. "But I'd like to wait until after the challenge ceremony to get that started, if that's okay." She says, stopping in front of me and lo

Chapter Forty-Nine-Cleo

The next few days were relatively quiet.I got up every day at six and went to train with the pack guards. I would kick everyone's ass and then we'd goof off until about twelve. I'd eat lunch with Ike, see what he'd been doing all day, then I'd train with Willow. She was teaching me her family's fighting style. I didn't know exactly what it was called because it was Japanese, but I did know that it was very different from anything I had ever done. Willow said I mostly fought like a dying animal. Every attack I performed was to kill. I ripped with my teeth and claws a lot or used my head and body weight to get my opponent on the ground to pummel them.Willow's fighting style was elegant and quick. It targeted joints and pressure points, making it impossible for an opponent to fight back after a few carefully placed jabs. It involved a lot of footwork and jumping, but also an extensive knowledge of the human body. Willow knew exactly where to hit anyone to get them to crumple into a usel

Chapter Fifty

What are you thinking about over there? I felt both my panther and I jump in surprise. It had been a long time since the voice of another pack member rang through our thoughts.I'm just worried about who's going to show up at this ceremony. I think back to Zach. It wasn't a lie; it just wasn't the whole truth. I still wanted to keep my past from as many people as I could.Don't be. I've seen you fight. You'll be fine. I stay silent, stuck in my own thoughts. We ran around the pack for a few minutes silently. My panther is happy being out and about so often these days. She loves being in control and takes full advantage whenever possible. Currently she's having a tough time simply running around in circles. She wants to run and hunt and be free.If you want to go, go. It looks clear. My panther doesn't hesitate for a second before breaking off from Zach and running deeper into the woods. We tended to travel the same path each time we came here so there hadn't really been much exploring
