101 : The entity

My feet pad lightly on the floorboards as I approach him, my heart thudding a little louder with each step. He senses my presence and turns around.“Why aren’t you inside Ezra’s room?” I ask.He shrugs. “He’s spending time with Rayn, so I didn't want to disturb them,” he says, his face cold and stoic, like usual. But I can feel his yearning to be close to Ezra.My lips purse. Things between Dad and Elijah are still a little strained. It isn’t like Dad has been outwardly hostile towards him, but there has been tension between them. He accepted Elijah joining us for Ezra’s sake and also because of the cure. 102 : A Hero

VERENAI feel lost. What do I say to comfort him? He seems so scared.“You defeated him,” Elijah's voice comes all of a sudden and Ezra shifts his gaze towards him. Elijah looks at him with a serious face. “You are strong, Ezra. You defeated him like it was nothing.”Ezra sniffs, his nose red and his eyes puffy. “I did?”Elijah nods. “Yeah. You saved us. He was trying to hurt us, but you protected us. That’s why we are all safe now. Because of you.”Ezra looks down, blinks a few times as if he’s thinking something, then asks, “Then…I am stronger than him? Strong to protect Mommy?”“Yes. Absolutely. Just like him.” He points at his Buzz Lightyear action figure and Ezra’s eyes light up.“I’m a hero like him?”“Of course you are. You did not know that you are a hero?” Elijah feigns doubt by furrowing his brows. Ezra shakes his head innocently. “Hmm. That’s strange. Well, it's understandable. Heroes don’t know they are heroes and that’s what makes them cool. You are our hero, Ezra.”Ezra l

103 : Lunch With Him

VERENA“See what you did?” Dory glares at Drake, who scratches the back of his neck.“Eh…it's a game where, um…you throw a ping-pong ball in plastic cups that have…” Drake looks at Dory hesitantly before answering, “Apple juice.”Ezra looks at them with amusement. “Wow. That sounds awesome. I want to play beer pong too!” He chirps and shifts his gaze towards me. “Mommy, can we play beer pong?”“Why don’t you show them your bicycle first? And your Buzz Lightyear?” I ask with a smile.“Yeah!” He turns to them, “Do you want to see my action figures?!” he asks in excitement.“Sure.” Dory nods, and he grabs her hand, pulling her towards his room.“Don’t rush,” I say.“Okay, Mommy.” His shout comes, and I smile as I hand Maria the plate. I hear footsteps and look up to find Elijah walking in, unbuttoning his coat. His gaze falls on me and my heart skips a beat.I told him to use one of our guest bathrooms to freshen up, and I can now smell the scent of shampoo on his hair that’s combed back

104 : Accidently Hit Your Foot

VERENAMy confusion is overtaken by the loud thumping of my heart as I feel Elijah’s presence beside me, his scent tempting me. Maria serves Elijah’s plate next after Ezra, and Elijah’s brows raise inquisitively when he sees his favorite dishes served on the plate. He looks at me and asks, a playful hint in his eyes, “Does Maria know what I like, or was it pure coincidence?”I shrug, spearing two of the perfectly seared scallops nestled on the bed of creamy grits. “Probably just a coincidence,” I mumble, trying to sound nonchalant despite the heat creeping up my cheeks. His eyes narrow playfully. “Coincidence, huh? Seems a little too on point for a coincidence. Did you, by any chance, mention my breakfast preferences to Maria?” he asks, his voice a low rumble that sends a shiver down my spine. My heart skips a beat, then hammers a frantic rhythm against my ribs. “Were you expecting me to stay?” he teases, his gaze flickering to my face.My cheeks heat up and I take a few truffle fries

105 : We Are Not A Couple

VERENA The atmosphere at the lunch table is light-hearted and happy. Laughter bounces around the table, accompanied by the clinking of silverware. Dad is sharing one of his fishing stories.“It was a rare one. This huge…” He uses his hands to show how big the fish he caught was. Everyone is listening intently to him, even Elijah.During the conversation, I notice Ezra sliding the carrots to one side of his plate, his nose scrunched in distaste.“You don’t like carrots?” Elijah asks, staring at Ezra's plate.Ezra shakes his head. “They taste very bleugh!” He sticks his tongue out, and Elijah hums.“I see. It's totally okay to not like something after you have tasted it. But…” Elijah says, and Ezra looks up at him. “You shouldn’t waste food like that. Some people don’t have the luxury of a proper meal like you do. Recycling is much better than wasting.”My heart tugs at his words. That’s what I said during our marriage, on the day he threw the milk coffee I made for him. He still rememb

106 : I'll wait

VERENA“Thanks for being here for Ezra,” I say, gaining his attention. I watch the water stream down the plate as it cleans it. “As much as I would have liked to try this on my own, I’m glad that you were here.” I look at him, and our eyes meet.“I’m always here. Always will be. Until the end,” he replies in a deep voice, and my heart thumps in my chest.I clutch the edge of the sink and bite my lower lip before asking, “What if…we never get back together? What will you do then?” I don’t know why I asked this, but I am just curious to know.Elijah stares at me, his obsidian eyes unreadable. He looks away, his focus returning to the soapy plate in his hands. “I’ll marry someone else,” he mumbles, his voice rough. “Someone who can run my pack by my side.” The words hit me like a physical blow, stealing the breath from my lungs and sending a jolt of unexpected pain through my chest. Marry someone else? Run the pack with his wife? The image that flashes through my mind—Elijah, with another

107 : Unspoken Emotions

VERENA“Even if fate throws us a cruel hand,” he continues, his voice dropping to a husky whisper, “even if you choose someone else, I’ll wait. I don’t do anything, except close my eyes, feeling his lips brush against mine. Every single cell in my body hums with excitement.“Oh yes, yes. The—” The sound of Maria’s voice approaching slices through our moment. A strangled gasp escapes Maria’s lips as she rounds the corner into the kitchen, her cheerful chatter abruptly cutting off. 108 : The Stolen Glasses

VERENAElijah smiles and ruffles his hair. “I have to go back to my pack.”He pouts, his brows furrowing. “No! Stay. We’ll play all night and you can tell me bedtime stories,” he whines.I sigh. “Sweetie, he has work to do. He’ll come to meet you again soon.” Elijah looks at me, surprise flickering in his eyes. In a way, I told him that he can come here as many times as he wants. I want to tell Ezra right now about Elijah, but he has just recovered from a deadly curse. The information might overwhelm him and I don’t want that. I think Elijah understands that too. He smiles. “Yeah, I’ll come back to meet you. 109 : Feral Instincts

VERENAI look back at him. “The guard was caught and interrogated. He said the person he sold it to did not show their face. The person just handed him the money and was wearing a hoodie to cover their face. The guard suspects that it was a man, but he does not have any concrete reason to support his claim.”Elijah tilts his head, his eyes swirling with doubt before he speaks. “So, it isn’t Nixie then?”“I can’t confirm since there’s no description of the person. Another mystery for us to solve,” I say and release an exasperated sigh. “It's hard to tell if Nixie is the one behind it or if she has nothing to do with any of this at all. Maybe we are going after the wrong person.”“You believe it's someone else who wants to ruin us,” Elijah mutters, his voice deep and grave.“Heh. I don’t know what to believe at this point, to be honest.” I kick a stone before my boot and watch it hit the ground a few steps away. “It's all blurry, and it scares me. Not for me but for Ezra and for everyone

110 : Primal Surge

VERENAThe guttural growl that erupted from my throat. It sounds so primal, so foreign that it sends a jolt of shock through me. My body stiffens, as if recoiling from the noise that escaped me. I didn’t mean to growl, it simply happened. A reaction I do not understand. Elijah’s reaction, however, is far from what I expected. A slow smile spreads across his face, a glint of amusement dancing in his eyes. “Looks like you’re getting more in touch with your wolf's instincts,” he says, his voice calm yet laced with pride. My stomach churns, a knot of unease tightening my gut. “I-is this bad?” I ask, a flicker of curiosity battling with my fear. The growl, the raw power it held–it felt both terrifying and exhilarating. Sure, Serena has made me feel a few things that are new to me. I had run through the woods more than I did in my entire life and hunted small animals. Even broke furniture in the house when I shifted. But this? This feels…different. More primal, more connected to what’s
