Chapter Forty-One

Caden’s POV“What happened to you?” I knew what happened to her already, I wanted to hear her say it. I wasn’t an investigator but I was trying to connect the dots here.It was a simple question yet Anna acted as if I slapped her across the face. Then it happened too fast, too many emotions were flashing through her face, switching colors like party lights.“Anna?” I called out but she didn’t respond. It made me panic and I moved towards her.“Anna?” I tried again, snapping my fingers in front of her.To no avail. She looked like she was trying to get her composure to herself yet she was still mumbling incoherent words to herself and I couldn't tell what the problem was.She seemed to go low-key hysteric and I could tell there was a torment- no a battle going on in her head.“Mom, shut up, stop, I know! Please stop! Shut up!” those were the only words I could pick out, the rest came out too fast, way too fast for me to comprehend them. When the words rushed out faster than possible, h

Chapter Forty-Two

Caden’s POVSeanI kept whispering short seconds, minutes of prayers as I reached Aunt Marie's room, her bed was empty. In fact, her hospital room looked like there had been no one there before. The curtains were drawn in every corner and the light was out. Her bedside table with its vase of flowers stood still too, her bed was laid, properly laid and that was when my heart stopped beating. The silence was deafening, but I couldn't look away. Where was my aunt?“Excuse me, sir, are you looking for someone?” the little Asian nurse asked me. She stood by the entrance of the room. I hadn't noticed her earlier since I was too focused on what was going on in my head. She wore an immaculate white nurse uniform that was below her knees, and her long black hair was tied into a bun. Her face looked kind enough.“My Aunt” was all I could say.“Oh she's been moved from the emergency room, the doctor said she might be discharged later today” she answered with an apologetic smile. It was then I

Chapter Forty-Three

Anna’s POV“Are you going to keep hugging your knees or you'll tell me what you and Caden Gallagher discussed or did?'' Erica wriggled her eyebrows suggestively at me and I just stared at her as if she had committed an abomination. Her blonde hair was pulled up in a complicated bun, but it had already come undone and now hung down her back in loose curls. She wore an oversized sweatshirt with a graphic of the ‘Punch’ logo on the front. “Come on! Give me some credits. I am trying to make you happy here. I know something happened, there was this tension in the air between you too” she continued wiggling her eyebrows. “Now are you going to talk or do I have to make you” She raised both arms as if she were about to strike me and I started to smile. “Did you guys kiss?” She pressed on.I groaned and facepalmed myself.“Oh my goodness! you did kiss” she squealed.“Hold your horses! nothing happened” I managed to croak. “And why would we kiss?”She looked at me as if I was stupid as if s

Chapter Forty-Four

Anna's POVBefore Erica’s scream, I had zoned out completely.I had built those words around me, I had drowned myself in denial that maybe, just maybe I was being paranoid, that no one was following me, that Scar was a made believe and his text was a stupid prank.I knew it was a lie.But I had bought my lies so badly that I couldn't even tell the difference between illusion and reality. What difference was there? That was just nonsense. All of these were bullshits! Erica was bullshiting me.Someone bumped my head against that wall on purpose, someone wanted me dead on purpose but what did I ever do wrong? Why wasn't I normal like everyone else?“Can you stop? Stop zoning out!” Erica was in front of me, her eyes were looking at me as if I planned on running away.“I am fine” I was surprised at how firm my voice sounded even though I was sure that my face looked chalky as a ghost. The door flew open again and I thought it was the doctor but it was Danny.I was glad he came in at that m

Chapter Forty-Five

Anna’s POVThe following week I resumed work, and everyone, even those who didn't like me, sent fake smiles and sympathy my way every time I walked in. The whole office knew by now what had happened, and most of them were gossiping and taunting about my situation. It was sickening how much attention it brought me, I wasn't used to having people pay me such respect and deference like they were( it was all fake and that was the part that drove me insane), but I wasn't one to complain. If everyone treated me like shit because of what had happened, then that was fine. No one else wanted the same treatment as I had got anyway.Trevor's hug didn't make me feel warm like it usually did, it sent weird shivers down my spine that made me paralyzed and unable to hug him back.I wanted to get away from him as fast as I could. I had no idea why I was suddenly afraid of everything and why it felt as if they were eyes everywhere watching us.“Sorry I couldn't come visit at the hospital” he apologi

Chapter Forty-Six

Anna's POV“What the hell Anna? Why are you running?” the owner of the car asked when he finally stepped out of the car and approached me.My breathing was heavy, I could barely talk between wheezes, and I needed air badly. I was flustered because he had caught me in a bizarre situation again.“I... I...” I stammered out, trying to form words that weren't coming out of my mouth in broken sentences. The man rolled his eyes and crossed his arms “Come here. Let's get you inside” he held a hand out for me to take. He helped me up and put my arm around his shoulder. And he muttered something under his breath like “You always know how to attract trouble”And I pushed him away.I almost did.His touch was weird. It made me feel weird- it almost burnt me, sending sparks of heat through my skin, and I had to resist the urge to shudder. The look on his face was unreadable, and he stayed silent as his eyes remained glued to my face and made me uncomfortable.Bare.Like he could see through my

Chapter Forty-Seven

Caden’s POVShe must have dozed off from all the anger she was trying to keep inside her. Her mouth was partly wide and I chuckled at how adorable she looked.Suddenly her eyes slowly fluttered open as if she felt herself being shaken gently. She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion and squinted them to try and focus on what was happening. And she realised that she was still in my car.Her green eyes met mine and I drew in sharp breaths, taking notice of their colour. They were deep and captivating, and they gave everything a certain mysterious quality I couldn't -can't explain.“We are here” I forced myself to say. Turning my attention from her eyes and lips. I would have kissed her right now and taken her back to my place to do all of the sinful things running through my mind if she was one of those girls. But she didn't seem like them, she looked too fragile and secondly, she didn’t want to be around me.This was the first time.Maybe it was because of what had happened in the hos

Chapter Forty-Eight

Caden's POVWhy was she here? Why the hell were they here? What were they doing sitting on the pavement in front of my house as if they belonged there? under the cold breeze of this evening and he clung to her desperately.I froze when I saw them after I stepped out of the car.She seemed hesitant and unsure at the same time.I stepped closer, as I waited for her to decide on what to do next. When she stood up, she approached me cautiously, as if approaching a dangerous animal ready to bite. She should be afraid. She ought to.How did she even know where I live?“Hi?” her shaky voice gave her away to her fear.Oh well, at least she knew her way around me, which was relieving. But that didn't mean I wouldn't rip their faces off later. Or maybe even kill them. That was definitely my top priority.“What do you want?” my tone caused her to jump slightly. She glanced at me and bit her lower lip nervously.“You're...you're not going to hurt us are you?” She asked hesitantly.Of course, I

Chapter Forty-Nine

Anna’s POVThe first time I knew my head was fucked up was when Erica came home crying. It was the first time I had seen her cry apart from when I told her my story. Her blonde hair was mussed and she looked as though she’d been crying for hours. Her makeup was smeared but it only served to make everything worse. I sucked at consoling people and didn't know what to do, eventually, I went to her and she hugged me burying her face in my shirt and soiling it with her tears and eyeliner. She clung to me like a life preserver in the middle of the storm. Like we were both scared shitless, but we also needed comfort, I guess. She sobbed against my chest until her voice was hoarse. She pulled away from me finally looking me dead in the eye and said "Danny and I fought”She said it almost inaudibly and with such conviction that my heart broke. My throat tightened and I reached over and grabbed her hand in mine. “What happened?”I asked quietly, afraid to break her composure further. It took

Chapter Fifty

Anna’s POVThere were thin lines- cuts and bruises marrying his skin - covering most of his wrists and it felt odd looking at them because... I couldn't bring myself to think about it, was he cutting himself?I mean that was impossible, right? Caden Gallagher couldn't be cutting himself right? he had no reason to. But they were old ones too and the look on his face gave him away.He looked like a scared animal who's been cornered- like he knew he was going to go under, the odds were stacked against him and he knew it. He immediately pulled the length of his shirt down self-consciously and his shoulders tensed. A small smile twitched at the edges of his lips and I swear his entire demeanor shifted, he was calmer now. It was as though he put a lid back on that vulnerability that had threatened to surface after a while. I felt bad for watching, but I wanted to help somehow.I tried to push through that mental wall he'd put up around himself and reach him. “Are you okay?”I asked softl
