Chapter 41

Lena washed herself quickly, harshly scrubbing away the dyes and dirt and soot of the day, for the water was rapidly losing warmth. Once she finished, she emptied the water and dried herself hurriedly, muscles and bones screaming for rest. She pulled on a plain cotton shift, and crawled into bed before her legs finally abandoned her. Erich came back into the room a few minutes later, his expression careful and attentive. "Did the bath help?" he asked. Lena smiled sweetly and nodded. "It did. I really needed that today...you are so kind," Lena replied, curling up beneath the thin blanket. Erich tentatively sat down on the bed next to her. "How was your day?" Erich asked softly. Her eyes lowered in exhaustion as he slowly brought his hand to her face, and pushed away the damp hair that clung to her cheek. "It was very busy...three machines were broken. How was yours?" Lena asked. Erich smiled apologetically. "I imagine not as tiresome as yours. I know this type of work isn't wha

Chapter 42

For the first week, Renz was certain Lena would return to him. He waited for her everyday, absolutely sure that at any moment, her pretty face would reappear. Surely she didn't mean everything she'd said. And surely she knew that he didn't mean everything he'd said. Once she calmed down and gathered her wits, his Lena would return to him. But she didn't. For the second week, Renz was furious. He spent his days constantly on edge, his face permanently etched with a harsh scowl. His rage was steady and omnipresent, boiling beneath the surface, and periodically, it would volcanically explode in the form of an aggressive verbal outburst. His servants feared him, even Otto avoided him, but Renz couldn't focus on assuaging anyone. He was just too angry. He was certain he hated Lena, and possibly even all women. He'd given Lena more of himself than he had to any other woman. And he'd thought she was beginning to give herself to him. But she'd led him on, had waited to punish him, just li

Chapter 43

"I never said I was proud of this...this certainly isn't the type of conquest I'd boast about," Renz muttered. But then Karl surprised him with his next query. "Have you ever told her any of this?" Karl asked. Renz shook his head. That was a conversation he'd never wanted to have with her. They sat silently for several moments. Renz took a sip of water, moistening his drying throat, and he desperately wished for something stronger. But Renz had finished the last of his brandy and Scotch whiskey the night before. "You truly love her?" Karl asked finally. Renz sighed wearily. "Wholly," he answered. Karl slightly looked to the ceiling, and appeared highly pensive. "Does she love you?" Karl asked, back at full attention. Renz laughed dryly and shook his head. "She called me a savage and a rapist and left me for a servant. What do you think?" Renz asked. Karl's eyes narrowed. "I think that telling a woman that men will think she's a whore is probably the last thing you should do t

Chapter 44

Lena felt a sharp pain in her chest as his words occupied the air between them, and she lowered her head and pursed her lips together to suppress her hurt. She heard Erich sigh, and she stared at the floor as he walked towards her. "Lena, I'm sorry—" "I never asked to be with Herr Wolfenbarger," Lena said flatly. She looked up at Erich with fixed eyes, and she saw that his anger was beginning to soften. "But you could have left him sooner. You certainly didn't have to go to Berlin," Erich said. Lena felt her face begin to turn hot. She really didn't want to talk about Renz with him. "Erich...I had nowhere else to go. I lost so much so quickly...can't you understand that?" she asked softly. Erich sighed again, and he stepped away from her. "I understand that...all that his money could buy was probably very enticing to a girl like you," Erich said bitterly. Lena gasped, not quite believing what she'd just heard him say. "What do you mean? I never had any interest in his money.

Chapter 45

"Please let go of me...I don't want to do this with you...ever again," Lena whimpered. As she spoke the words, she wondered just how true they were anymore. As much as it shamed her to admit, Lena was completely defeated and submissive when it came to Renz. Fighting him, as it always had been, was useless. Renz's eyes bored into hers as he slowly brought his hand up her thigh, pushing up her thin shift until it bunched around her waist. Lena moaned loudly when his finger slipped with ease inside of her, slowly and steadily penetrating her. She struggled against his grip on her wrist as she felt her body shamelessly moistening. "I've forced you once before, Lena. What makes you think I wouldn't do it again?" Renz asked dangerously, slipping another finger inside of her. Lena screamed in pleasure and frustration, and she tightened her inner walls to halt the penetration. But the sensation was almost unbearable as his fingers insistently stroked against that one, especially sensitive

Chapter 46

She watched in shy amazement as Renz arched his back, and shoved himself inside of her with shallower, quicker, harder thrusts. He really was finely athletic, and entirely male, and Lena admired how powerful his body was. Renz looked down at her, his breathing hard and ragged, and he momentarily paused his movements inside of her. Lena slightly rotated her hips, encouraging him to continue, but Renz remained motionless, buried deep inside of her. "I love you, Lena," he said softly. Lena frowned in confusion at his sudden change in behavior, and she tightened her legs around him in impatience. "Just do what you came here to do," she said, exasperated. Renz slowly pushed in and out of her, steadily building his pace again. "You are the most...beautiful woman in the world to me, Lena," Renz said, his voice slightly louder and less controlled. His hips began to slam against hers more frequently, and Lena shook her head, feebly trying to fight the bubbling in her belly. "Don't say tha

Chapter 47

But then Lena's thoughts went to that last image she had of Renz, that split second before she'd left, immediately following her last angry words. It was an image she'd tried to forget, for she'd never before seen a person appear so hurt and broken. Lena thought that she could eventually suppress her desire for Renz. But she knew that vision of him would remain in her heart for much longer. Lena felt the air begin to drop several degrees, and she knew then that night was soon approaching. Lena sighed and decided to return back to the pub, remembering she'd promised to clean for Georg. But mostly, she hoped that Erich would be there waiting for her. ****** ****** Renz entered the pub, slightly surprised to find that it was largely empty, with the exception of two drunken patrons passed out in a corner, surrounded by towers of empty beer mugs. The pub really was crude and shoddy, with odd odors and decaying furniture, but it would have to do. Renz removed his jacket as he sat down

Chapter 48

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a large stack of bound banknotes. The eye that wasn't bruised widened, and Erich stepped towards Renz in confusion. "Here. Lena doesn't need to be living in a place like this. Contact me when you need more. She doesn't need to know," Renz said, extending the funds to Erich. Erich eyed the money warily, but then he nodded appreciatively. "You're very generous, Herr Wolfenbarger," he said. Erich extended his hand to accept the money, but the tattoo of a red spade on the inside of his wrist caught Renz's eye. He recognized the symbol instantly, and he was suddenly filled with dread and fury. He knew precisely who'd beaten Erich, and he knew that Lena was in danger. Erich cleared his throat and tried to hide the spade, but Renz advanced on him angrily. Erich retreated, attempting to put as much distance between himself and Renz as possible, but Renz was fuming dangerously. "It's not what you believe—" "You are a goddamn fool. Where is she?" R

Chapter 49

Lena was curled up on a small mat in her cell. Food had been deposited about an hour or two before, but it remained untouched. She'd been refusing to eat anything. And because of that, her body was very weak. She'd only been there for four days, but Lena had quickly learned the business of the other Wolfenbarger. He was in the business of selling flesh, and she was his newest whore. Lena hadn't seen any of the other women, for they were all kept cloistered in tiny cells identical to hers, each prostitute locked in her own solitude. The individual cells were all lined up next to each other in a larger, equally desolate room. The cell Lena occupied had no furniture, with the exception of a thin mat for sleeping and a small woolen blanket. The walls were stone, and there were no windows. Lena assumed that meant that she was being kept underground. Thick wooden doors covered each cell, with only a small opening for the nightly delivery of food. Lena only knew that there were other wome

Chapter 50

He dragged her to Aleksandr's office, and once he was given the invitation to enter, he placed his foot on Lena's lower stomach and kicked her inside. Lena tumbled onto the spaded carpet, and quickly became tangled in the chains. "Is all of that really necessary, you brute? She's just a girl," Aleksandr purred, slightly amused. Lena attempted to catch her breath as she slowly untangled herself on the floor. She was about to sit up, but Felix put his heavy boot on her back, and pushed her forward, knocking away her air supply once more. "This one needs more work. She bit and insulted Herr Meisner," Felix explained. Aleksandr's calm expression became one of surprise and distant excitement. He looked down at Lena, dark blond eyebrows arched. His smile was almost giddy, frighteningly so, and Lena began wondering just how much danger she was really in. "Is this true, Lena? Are you using that pretty mouth of yours improperly?" he asked. Felix slight
