Chapter 191

“Here. You must abide by these rules if you want to live here.” Mona handed the house rules to Thaddeus. The man took a look and read out, “No entering into respective rooms without permission. No invasion of respective privacy. No…” The man looked up and voiced his disgruntlement. “Are all these no’s to restrict me?” Mona gave a nod and handed a pen to the man. “It’s to restrict you and me. We can be fair. You can write your demands, and I will obey them if I see fit.” The man raised a brow. “If you see fit? Aren’t you getting a big head?” “You might want to consider moving out if you can’t accept the rules.” The man shook his head and put his name down under the ground rules. “Happy now?” Pleased, Mona put away the paper. “Now that your name is on it, you better keep your word and obey the rules.” She then drew close to the window and set up an easel to spread out a blank sketchpad. Mona had promised Tim and Ben she would help design for their studio. Since she was

The man’s raspy voice drew the children into the story. Soon, they closed their eyes and fell asleep. It was after midnight by the time Mona was done with the sketches. Ready to hit the sack, Mona went upstairs to check on the kids and found Thaddeus and the two children sleeping on one big bed in the children’s room. The man had one arm wrapped around each child. Thaddeus jolted awake when Bobby turned his body in his sleep. He glanced at the boy, only to realize it was a false alarm. Mona drew close and bent over to tuck the kids in while Thaddeus got up out of bed, bleary-eyed. He stood alongside Mona by the bed and watched the kids. Bobby and Millie had their butts propped up like a caterpillar. It was an amusing sight for the parents to watch. A warm night light lit up the children’s room, giving off a warm and inviting tone. With the light bouncing off the couple, Thaddeus observed his shadow over Mona’s as if he had the woman covered and protected. “How did we know

Chapter 193

Mona pursed her lips and stared at Thaddeus’s menacing face. Knowing she had hit a rock, Mona said nothing more and retreated to her room to rest. The information about her mother left her tossing and turning. Despite the long reflection, she could not gather her thoughts. In the end, she simply forgot about it and dozed off. Probably because she did not get a good rest, Mona slept through her alarm in the morning. It was half past seven by the time she got up. Mona got out of bed in a rush and walked out of the bedroom just in time to hear the door close downstairs. It seems Thaddeus had made the kids breakfast, and they were setting off to school. Mona went downstairs and stood behind the window to watch Thaddeus carrying one kid in each arm into the car. He looked every bit like a loving father. There was breakfast on the dining table. The man had made sandwiches and fried eggs. It was unexpected that the man could cook. A simple breakfast or a full dinner was no task

Chapter 194

“Got it. Tell the visitor to come in and inform security to keep an eye out over my end.” Mona took off her glasses. Reading between the lines, the assistant gave a nod and went to beckon the two mean-looking people into her office. “Mona, you shameless homewrecker!” No sooner after the assistant invited the ladies into the office, the younger woman stormed toward Mona, put her finger up Mona’s nose, and lashed out. “Please get out, ma’am.” The assistant rushed over to kick the woman out. Standing at the door, the older woman approached the assistant and grabbed ahold of her hands to shove her. “Isabel, that’s enough!” Mona jumped to her feet and drew close to help the assistant up. Mona examined her assistant to make sure she was not hurt. “What is security doing out there? Get in here.” Mona called the two security guards into the office to put a restraint on the ladies. “Let me go! Don’t touch my clothes with your dirty hands! Your annual wages aren’t even eno

Chapter 195

“You came between Isabel’s marriage, and now she is without a fiancé. It’s a disgrace. Nothing is more important to a girl than her reputation. Now, people will start talking because the engagement is broken off. They will say it was Isabel’s fault. Either way, you’re to take full responsibility for the matter.” Mona found the absurd claim hilarious. “Take responsibility? How so?” Mrs. Graham pushed Mona around with a cocky tone, “We’re hosting a party next week, and our guests are friends and families in the same social circle. We will clarify the reason for Isabel’s canceled engagement. We expect you to show up and tell everybody that Victor made such a decision because of you and your kids.” Mona curtly curled her lips. “Dream on.” “Well, you might want to start looking for another job, then.” Mona had a bad feeling. It seemed Mrs. Graham came prepared. “Our family holds 30% of shares in your model agency. Isabel is now the head of human resources. She can fire you any

Tim nodded his head, echoing the same sentiments. “You have put in a lot of work and gained seniority here. The best resources of Starbright are given to you. Your job prospect is looking good. Just put up with those people, okay?” “No. They’re out to get me. They’ll make me leave if I don’t concede and continue to intimidate me until they get what they want.” Ben was quite sure otherwise. “Isn’t Mr. Rockwell on your side? He has high regard for you. He will have your back.” Mona hesitated for a moment before ultimately shaking her head. “The Grahams are now a shareholder of the company. Mr. Rockwell can no longer make all the decisions, and my presence will only put him in a dilemma. I’d rather not do that to him.” Tim and Ben fell silent for a moment. Then, Tim put his hands in his pockets and walked out. “If you go, I’ll go. Moreover, I’ll apply to the same agency as you and continue to be your assistant.” Ben parroted the same. “I’m going too. We go wherever you go.”

Stopping in her tracks, Mona turned to the side to look at Ben and asked, “He comes from a wealthy family? Tim, what does your family do?” Tim made a face and explained to Mona, “My family runs a small business, but I don’t like people knowing.” He then criticized Ben, “I told you many times that it’s my privacy.” Mona and Ben exchanged looks and ended the conversation there. “Oh, where does Grandpa Gray live? Since I have time now, let’s pay him a visit.” “Sure. Grandpa Gray doesn’t live too far from here. It’s just three bus stops away.” The trio got onto the public bus and soon got down in an old neighborhood. This was Grandpa Gray’s home address. When they got to the place, Ben knocked on the door, but no one answered on the other side. Tim pulled out his phone and dialed a number. “Grandpa Gray might be having a nap. I should give him a call to see what’s going on.” However, no one answered the phone either. The neighbor next door heard the activity outside and

Chapter 198

Mona watched on with her eyes tearing up. It was now the intelligence era, and mobile phones had become part of everyday life. Nevertheless, it was not easy for the older generation to make sense of the smartphone. The old couple were like children learning to walk as they navigated in uncharted territory for their hospital visit. Mona drew close and hunched down to hug Grandma Beth. “Don’t panic, Granny. We’ll be with you throughout. Baby steps.” Mona’s words calmed Grandma Beth down. The old lady stopped crying. The trio split the tasks between them in registering Grandpa Gray in the system, admitting him into the hospital, and taking him to take medical tests on various floors. It took several hours, but Grandpa finally got a hospital bed. Grandpa Gray had a rather complicated illness. Several medical experts ran tests and left the ward to discuss a treatment plan. Judging by their somber looks, things must not be looking good. Ben approached the doctors and said, “Do

Chapter 199

Ben asked Mona, “Mona, what do you think we should do? Are we just going to give up?” Mona cleared her mind and contemplated for a moment. Maybe they should give it another push and fight for the last glimmer of hope. “Ben, I understand where you’re coming from, and I can relate to what you’re feeling. Since you insist, we can try and see if there are other hospitals that will accept Grandpa Gray as a patient. What do you think?” “Other hospitals? This is the most authoritative hospital in the city.” With his arms folded, Tim slowly opened up. “I think you’ve got the wrong idea about that. The best hospital in the city is Sacred Heart Hospital, a former medic hospital which is not usually available to civilians.”“Sacred Heart Hospital? That explains why I’ve never heard of that hospital before.” Mona replied, “Sacred Heart? The name sounds familiar.” She dug deep into her memory before it came back to her that the Fontaines sought medical services from that hospital. Thad

Chapter 200

“You’re here, Mr. Fontaine.” Mona followed everybody’s line of vision to the door, where a man in a sharp suit stood. The dim light from the hallway bounced off his prominent facial features, giving an illusion of a God descending from Heaven. Thaddeus walked into the office with a presence that commanded the room. Standing next to Mona, he gave the new authoritative figures a nod. “How’s the patient doing?” He listened to the experts’ opinions with a hand around Mona’s waist. Thaddeus smiled faintly and said, “My wife is proficient in alternative medicine. If possible, let her participate in the treatment. I trust she will be a great assistance to you.” Thaddeus’s words blew the room full of people away. It was not just Mona’s knowledge of alternative medicine that everybody was surprised about, but also that Mona was Thaddeus’s wife. Freaking out, Mona pushed the man away and dissociated herself from him. “You’re funny, Mr. Fontaine. When did I become Mrs. Fontaine?”
