Chapter 1: Loss and Mourning

The rain poured down heavily upon the canvas above them as the priest finished the eulogy. The dreariness of the day did not seem to affect Rowan as she sat by her brother. He was lost and alone. His brown eyes were filled with tears as he mourned the loss of their parents. He needed her to place her arm around him and tell him that things would be ok. He needed her to let him know that he still mattered. That she was still the big sister that watched out for him. But she seemed to be lost. Nothing mattered. Not anymore. Her family was gone, torn apart by death and deception. Someone nudged her and she responded just long enough to place her carnations on top of her parent's caskets. Returning to her seat, she sat down. The numbness had overtaken her and she was unable to feel or care. The dreary day was dark and cold and even though it was early afternoon, it felt as if it were late in the evening. The clouds darkened the sky and a sense of foreboding filled the air.

I know that what I am about to say will be hard for you to accept and hard for you to understand. But with the way things have turned out, I have a few confessions to make and I need to let you know why this all happened the way it did. First of all, I had a hand in your parents' deaths. Though, your parents had lied to you for some time."He paused a moment as he waited for Rowan to respond, but she was in a state of shock and just stared at him. Though she had heard everything he had said."There is a reason I did what I did, though at this point in time you will not understand, not

She was not going to be locked in my bedroom again. She hated that feeling. Being shut up in a room like that felt like a cage to her. Maybe she was a wolf.
