SAFETY

Chapter 73A man stumbled out through the trees, dragging with him someone else."Dilla!" Ennie shouted. Turning to Germaine, she exclaimed. "My lady, it's Dilla and Connie."Germaine's heart soared on seeing them. They were the least people she expected to break through the trees. She didn't think for one minute the danger was past them, far from it. She knew it still lurked close by."My lady, Ennie, quick, we must go across the river now for behind us lurks the vampires." The mage stumbled forward with a worried look on his face.Connie was out of breath and looked tired with leaves clinging to her clothes.Germaine sighed and shook her head. "I'm glad to see you too, mage, but I still don't know how we are going to cross this river."The mage smiled. "Come, now, my lady, use your powers, or have you forgotten about them so soon?"Germaine looked confused. "I know I can destroy things but to build a bridg

FOREST OF THE GOBLINS

Chapter 74Germaine could not believe it. Her whole body felt alive, and that damn tightness in her chest which had refused to go when she was away from Keratin, completely eased up. Right now, it felt like her chest sang with joy, make that every part of her being. She knew without a doubt she was meant for this man holding her tightly to his chest. Her arms raised and wound around his neck as she went on tiptoes and nuzzled his neck. He smelt divine - of pine and earth and musk. She drew back and looked up at him. "And I am so happy to be in your arms once more."The blinding smile he gave her melted her heart and at the same time tightened it. Someone coughed and she moved back but Keratin shook his head and tightened his arms around her waist. "My love, I do not want to let you go, not now that I have just found you."Germaine suppressed a laugh. "Please, Ker, I have to say hello to the others. It wouldn

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Chapter 75She blinked repeatedly but that did not change what she saw.It was a man, but what a man.He was the complete opposite of Keratin. Where Keratin was well-built, this man had a lean muscle mass on him. His hair was light brown and fell in waves around his face giving him an angelic look. He had on a white tunic and brown shorts. Slung across his shoulders was a long bow and arrow and in one hand he held an animal almost as large as himself, the only difference was that it was obviously dead. His face as well as the rest of his body was a dark shade of brown, but what struck Germaine most about him were his eyes. They were a striking green, the same color as the leaves that surrounded them. They were also hypnotizing to look at. She felt like she was drowning in them as she stared into their depths. She also heard, as if from far away, Keratin's voice and the tightening of his hand around her waist.

THE GREEN-EYED MONSTER

Chapter 76Germaine watched as Keratin crouched at the opening of the hole trying to see inside it. It was pitch black from where she stood, which wasn't far at all. She had always had an inordinate fear of the dark and now that she was willingly going into the abyss, so to speak, it seemed foolhardy of her.Mulling over it in her mind, she knew she had no other choice but to do so. If she backed down now, all the people who looked up to her would deem her a coward. Keratin got onto his hands and knees and stepped inside the hole although he did not go far as he waited for her to follow."Well, here goes something," Germaine murmured to herself and stepped inside after him."Be careful, my lady." The mage spoke up behind her."Try not to bump into anything while down there," Ennie said immediately after."We'll be right behind you." Amelia piped up as well with a tone of excitement in her words.Germaine hear

THE WAY OF GOBLINS

Chapter 77Keratin's hand once more found its way around Germaine's waist as they followed Storm and Zar through the winding tunnel. Germaine lost track of how long they had been walking when Zar suddenly stopped in front of a door made out of what seemed like clay and knocked. The sound reverberated all around adding volume and making it sound ominous. The door opened up an inch at first, but when Zar exchanged a few words with whoever was on the other side, it was opened up wider. Germaine could not take her eyes off the creature that stood in front of them.Zar turned to their party and began introductions. "This is Kalo." A female goblin appeared beside him. "And this is Moka. They are mated as well as the keepers of the goblin race."Germaine looked from the dwarf-like creatures and back to Zar. She did not know what to make of the situation. If Zar was a goblin, then how come he was the direct opposite

VAMPIRES HAPPENED

Chapter 78Germaine woke with a start. For a few seconds, she did not know where she was or who she even was. She looked askance, at the basket in front of the bed that glowed with a yellow, iridescent light and remembered fireflies. Everything came tumbling back into her mind like an information overload thereafter. She sighed and flopped back down onto the bed, her body feeling tired and spent. She closed her eyes, her body needing more rest but the empty gnawing feeling in her stomach made her sit up once more. She knew if she did not eat something soon, she would be weak, making her powers practically null and void. She also knew from experience that when she got this way, she would become antagonistic. She didn't want to offend anyone, so she grudgingly got up on shaky legs.A knock sounded on the door as she got to it and when she opened it, she was surprised to see a young female goblin holding a tray

OF PLANS & ASPIRATIONS

Chapter 79Everyone turned to see Zar striding inside the hall wearing a different black tunic and trousers. It seemed his clothes matched his mood because his eyes shone with fury as he advanced further inside the hall and stood directly in view of everyone. He looked at a space in front of them as his eyes took on a shiny hue and misted over. It was obvious he was relieving the past. But oh, what a past.As he opened his mouth to weave a tale of horror, so rife and gory, Germaine could not help but clutch onto the edges of the table. Long ago, the home of the goblins was based inside the heart of the forest and they lived in peace with all other species of animals. They had a celebration of the coming of age, as was customary amongst goblins when they reached a certain age.All the goblins were present, including the newly mated ones. They had barely started the celebration when a loud noise rent the air send

THE WITCH AND A HIDDEN CURSE

Chapter 80The following morning, Germaine set out with Dilla and Connie. They did not have a particular destination in mind, but Germaine wanted the spell from Rage lifted off her. Before she left, Keratin begged her to be safe and return on time. He kissed her passionately and said he would count the hours till she was back."Why don't you want Keratin and the others to know about your powers?" Dilla was the first to break the silence. They had just crawled out of the hole and Germaine relished the fresh air as well as the sights and sounds of the boisterous animals all around them. She caught one hanging from a tree and grinned as it snaked up a branch."I don't know." She shrugged. "I'm just reluctant to do so, call it a hunch but something keeps holding me back.""Even to your mate, Keratin?" Dilla persisted.Germaine sighed. "How do I even know he's really my mate? I don't want to make a mistake and the

AN OPEN SECRET

Chapter 81They found a spot deep in the forest where they would be alone and not be discovered. Dilla brought out the runes from the sack hoisted on his shoulders. It was the only thing he had brought from the house because it would have been difficult to work on any new spells without them. Although he could wield incantations and chants as he pleased, but it would not be as potent as when the runes were present. They always strengthened every spell. He told Germaine to lie down on the ground, face up, and close her eyes. He wondered why she wanted to get rid of the spell. Maybe she did not know that with it, she was tied to Rage. That meant she would get to know what he was doing and at whatever time too, if only she tapped into it. Germaine was exceedingly powerful but she did not yet know the extent of her powers. She would not know yet until she was pushed to the limit. As soon as she lay down on the gr

AN ARRAY OF FEELINGS

Chapter 82The party was in full swing and all the goblins had dressed to impress. The females were bedecked in animal hide dresses and long necklaces around their necks and fingers, while the men wore tunics and shorts made from animal hide. Germaine found out Zar bought the jewelry from some merchants who usually came into the forest.Everywhere rang with gaiety and laughter. Flowers cushioned the floor and walls of the hall, and fireflies were let out of their baskets and flew around, lighting up every part of the hall making it look like something out of a fairytale book.Germaine could not contain her excitement. There was something about parties that made her happy and excited. She recalled the last one she attended in the werewolf town of Rim. That was the same day she and Keratin had made love and knew there was a deeper attraction between the two of them. Her face flamed red as she thought about what ha
