~Breaching of the Law~

[Clyde]   “There’s an intrusion in the east. The barrier has been compromised.” Moran bowed his head when I looked up. I could feel my scales surfacing. Moran knelt on one knee and said, “Allow me to take a look. Shall I call Ryker?”    “An intruder has trespassed and you are asking permission to investigate the matter?” I bristled at his ignorance and the need of being formal when he should have gone to check. “Take care of the paperwork. I will go and check.” I got up from my chair and stomped out of the room.   Who would dare to invade? I seethed at the thought. Brenton was ready to tear them apart. How could someone choose the steepest side of the mountain to invade? Was the barrier less powerful there? I decided to consult Hansika once I have dealt with the matter. My footsteps quickene

~Not Wholly Honest~

[Valerie]   Despite the fear and the inevitable humiliation that was in store for me, I didn’t dare to rebel. For some reason, I felt safe as he led the way through the slippery, snow-laden path. However, he seemed to lack manners. Not once did he slow his pace since he was a foot taller than me and he clearly had in-depth knowledge about the area? I had to stumble my way to keep up with me. Finally, when I saw that he wasn’t going to slow down, I said, “I know I have broken a rule or whatever, but can you be less impolite and at least slow down? Or do you plan to make my death look like an accident when I slip on the way and break my neck?”    He stopped and so did I, barely stopping myself from colliding against his back. He turned to look at me from over his shoulder, or rather glare at me like I suggested something heinous. He turned back again a

~A Unique Ride~

[Valerie] “How long will it take us to reach us to the…err, office, Mr….?” “Moran.” The guy supplied helpfully.  “Mr. Moran,” I said, clearing my throat. He smiled, not unkindly, and it had me blushing again. Were dragons this hot? We were walking slowly or rather he was matching my pace unlike someone else and I was thankful for that. I wouldn’t have asked this question had my feet not protested. Also, my body was catching up on exhaustion and hunger. I was famished.   “That depends on Theo,” he replied, pulling me out of my thoughts. I looked at him to see his amused expression and wondered why

~Insolent Girl~

[Clyde]   “Your Highness, Miss. Ravenwood is waiting in the office as per your instruction,” Moran’s voice floated in through the mind link. I immediately stood up from the plush high-back chair in my study.    “What happened?” Zenith gazed up at me, confusion marring her face. “Something came up,” I murmured. My body was taut with tension. Valerie’s matter would provide a slight respite from the turmoil going in my heart and mind.    “Oh. Can I help?” she asked eagerly, just like she used. But this time, it looked like she just wanted to be with me. Like she was more desperate than eager. I shook my head.    “You have travelled a lot. Rest for now. We’ll talk tomorrow,” I said with a small smile. The shine in her amber ey

~The Feeling of Betrayal~

[Valerie] I speed-walked out of the office knowing very well that Viola was following me. I heard Moran calling behind me, but my tears had already begun streaming down my cheeks. I almost wished for my mom to be here or Xyan… or Kenneth. Anyone but Viola. A gust of icy wind hit my face as soon as I exited the office, making me shiver. I pulled my hoodie tighter and stuffed my hands into the pockets but it did little to warm my fingers or lessen the shiver in that case. “Val.” I stiffened. I swallowed around the lump forming in my throat and brace for the reprimand that would soon commence. I didn’t turn around but that didn’t stop Viola from coming around and standing in front of me. Her midnight blue eyes flashed with anger. “Why?” She didn’t have to elaborate. I matched her glare with mine. “I’m not in the fucking mood to talk.” I hitched my backpack, even though it was now more like a rucksack now. And looked back for Moran. Wasn’t I promised a room? I could sleep off the exhau

~Burst of Power~

[Valerie] When I woke up the next morning, I felt disoriented. The bed was wrong, and it was too cold for my liking. I snuggled further inside, thinking of snagging a couple of minutes more, maybe I’ll skip class and tell Elias- My eyes shot open all of a sudden and I sat up. The room was still drowned in semi-darkness because of the heavy curtains. I was not in Crescentville but in the Basilisk territory. I was supposed to be participating in the Medeis Challenge. My heart thudded in my chest, partly from waking up with a start and partly from the realisation. Also, I am supposed to be meeting the Dragon King this morning… I wrestled the blanket aside and stumbled out of the bed. I had no way of knowing the time unless I switched on the phone. Screwing my eyes shut and hoping for the worst, I powered on the gadget. The moment it booted to life, the pinging and vibrations began, but my gaze settled on the digital clock. I blinked several times to see if I read it wrong because of a

~Tiredness Sets in~

[Clyde] “Zenith is back? When did she come back?” Moran asked, a hint of surprise in his tone. I stared at the map that was more like a drawing of a bunch of faded lines and scribbles. They say this was drawn by our ancestors and will give an idea of where the dragon pearl is. It was more like a few centuries old scribbled bullshit to me. I hummed. “And did she…?” “No. We haven’t spoken much. Only catching up,” I replied in a clipped tone. In truth, I had gone back late to the residence and was told that Zenith had returned to the guest quarters. In the morning, I had come to the office earlier than necessary, knowing that Zenith wouldn’t visit unless necessary. I was not one to avoid people, but she was, as always, not everyone even if our relationship had become sour or stagnant. But that wasn’t for Moran to know. He was usually deferential, but being my second-in-command for years sometimes made him bold at times. He took the hint and murmured, “I see.” It was then that the

~Concerned Family~

[Valerie] I couldn’t really understand where I am but it was bright, and it was blinding. I squinted and shielded my eyes to look around but it felt as if I couldn’t even open them. “Relax, Valerie,” the soothing voice that sometimes made its presence known in my mind, echoed. “Well, now I can’t relax even more,” I muttered. They remained silent. “Where am I?” “Somewhere between here and there..” they answered cryptically. Last I remember, I lost consciousness after controlling Fire, which is definitely not my Element. “Wait…are you…are you Rosamond? I heard a lot of stories from mom about how she heard a voice and thought she lost it but didn’t and then-” “I am not her… I am not Queen Rosamond,” the voice interrupted. I opened my mouth to argue, but then realised that it would be bizarre if Queen Rosamond began speaking to me because mom was her reincarnation and so it would be illogical. “Then who are you?” I demanded. It was a little weird to be talking to someone wh

~Brian Basilisk~

[Clyde] “What worries you, Clyde?” I turned and bowed my head respectfully. I let out a puff of air to let him know that yes, I was worried, but staying in my dragon form was helping me to repress my worry and concern as well as my unreasonable anger towards the force that was unfathomable. This must have been a surprise to him, for this was the second time in a week that I was here. This cliff was a stiff one, overlooking a gentle stream that flowed beneath and the lush forest surrounding it. The very place that calmed my mind and gave me solace. My brother and I discovered this place when we were at the age where we didn’t know sorrow. It also happened to be where my brother was living, in a humble log cabin. This place was so isolated that hardly anyone dared to climb it, giving both of us a perfect opportunity to get respite. For him, it was more like a prison– a self-proclaimed prison. My brother smiled, the same serene smile as if his heart hadn’t been torn apart and his f

~The Most Unexpected News~

[Valerie] I stared at the screen until mom asked, “Who is it?” Her back was thankfully turned back towards me as she was putting away a few things on the nightstand beside that side of the bed. I shook my head. “Kenneth. He was saying that this time he might fail at sparring and might slip a few ranks if he does. I am shocked at his lack of confidence.” I glanced away and exited the messaging app. I could feel mom's eyes on me, probably reading my aura and when she did this, I felt more self-conscious. She then made a noncommittal hum and resumed doing whatever she was doing. I let out a small sigh, although my heart was pounding. Maia? Maia did this? She put my name? How? As far as I know, it is very confidential. I lean back against the headboard and open a random app to keep my hands occupied and lessen my jitteriness. My palms were profusely sweating and increased tenfold by mom’s presence. What if she finds out and Maia gets punished? No, I can’t let her get in trouble. I’m
