CHAPTER EIGHTY. ARRESTED.

Autumn arrived in the blink of an eye and the treatment was made available first to critically sick patients when they saw that the patients were showing signs of stable recovery over two weeks they started administering it to other patients in hospitals. Rory even celebrated with Daniel’s family and all her friends flew in from wherever they were to be with her even Anna. This was a scientific breakthrough and the whole world was there to celebrate this feat. Dr Harvey even had a party and invited the big names of the Medical industry there. Rory invited all of her friends but not the Marcezes. For some reason, she didn’t feel happy with their absence as her eyes scanned the crowd dressed in exquisite outfits for today, but when her eyes landed on Daniel and her newfound family, the thought subsided a little as she stepped in front of the podium to make a speech. “I would like to say thank you to everyone who made it here tonight. It is nothing short of an honor to stand before yo

CHAPTER EIGHTY-ONE. TARGET.

Rory sat at the grand dining table, staring blankly at the untouched meal before her. The silver cutlery gleamed under the chandelier's light, casting reflections on the polished surface, but the sight only deepened the knot in her stomach. She hadn't eaten all day, not since the arrest. Her thoughts were consumed with worry, guilt, and the unbearable ache of helplessness. Daniel sat across from her, silently observing, his concerned gaze tracing the dark circles under her eyes, and the tension in her shoulders."Rory," he began gently, his voice cutting through the heavy silence, placing his hand on top of hers, "you need to eat something. Please."Rory's hand trembled as she reached for her fork, but the moment she touched it, she snapped. "How can you expect me to eat when they're in prison, Daniel?" Her voice cracked, laced with frustration and desperation. "Nate, and Dr. Harvey—they're locked up like criminals, and we don't even know if they've been fed, or if the food is even sa

CHAPTER EIGHTY-TWO. HALF SISTER.

A nurse waded through the hospital lobby, bypassing other doctors and medical staff rushing to get to patients. She dawned a white nurse’s outfit, her tied into a neat bun with only the bun visible as the rest of her head was covered with a nurse’s hat. Her squeaky white sneakers sounded on the white tiled floor as she held a stainless tray with cotton wool, scissors, and disinfectant. Only a pair of blue eyes could be seen through her brown-framed glasses because she wore a white face mask. Her eyes flitted like she was trying to find something. A Ward perhaps because she was looking at the ward signs the most. Her steps were cautious, blending in with the other nurses. “Nurse!” A doctor yelled from behind and she gasped lightly but kept walking quickening her steps. “Nurse!” The voice came again, louder and her pace picked up. However, a hand grabbed her shoulder and turned her around forcefully making her almost fall. “Didn’t you hear me?” the doctor eyed her and she cleared

CHAPTER EIGHTY THREE. EMMA MOORE.

Slightly curly hair that reached her shoulders, swaying with her purple cris-cross gown with the skirt in an a-line shape but with multiple pleats, and her white heels clicked on the cemented ground of the police station. Auburn eyes pierced back at the curious gazes of the officers there as she made her way to the cell her client was in, an officer leading the way.“My suspicion was correct. The serum was tempered in the hospital.” She heard a light voice that was thicker than most girls’ voices say as she arrived at the cell.“How did you find out?” Nate, behind the bars, gripping two of them as he spoke to Rory. His hair was disheveled, but his charm and handsomeness still shone even in the dimly lit, shabby, and stony cell. His voice was slightly hoarse, dark circles underneath his obsidian eyes.“I went to the hospital…”“You went to the hospital? Are you mad!? What if someone had seen you? Not someone what about the reporters? You would have implicated yourself!” He admonished h

CHAPTER EIGHTY FOUR. HALF TRUTH.

All of Rory’s favorite foods were spread on the table but she had no appetite. When Daniel begged her to at least eat the chili, she puked after taking two spoons, so he didn’t force her anymore.“Dani, who’s Emma Moore?” Heaviness and tiredness seeped into her words. The bags made her eyes appear swollen. His body stiffened at her question. “Emma is Evelyn’s sister… my ex-girlfriend.” Rory snapped her head to him and a thousand emotions swirled in her eyes. “What happened back then?”“Rory it’s not important. She is only here for Nate’s case.”“Did you know she and Nate were a couple?” “I did.”“That’s all? You aren’t going to explain it to me? I am your wife, Daniel, in case you’ve forgotten.” She was trying to keep her voice even. “I know you are my wife but what happened all those years ago isn’t important.” He held her hand on the table. “Trust me on this.” He soothed her but she removed her hand from his and stood up abruptly, making the chair screech. “Where are you going?

CHAPTER EIGHTY FIVE. TRUST.

It was good that Daniel’s study was wide enough to contain the people sitting in there currently. Daniel sat behind his desk, Tyler and Siao sitting together, Lizzy and George also together, Asher sat beside Rory who was as far away from Daniel as she could get and Emma leaned against the wall. She was also invited seeing that she was the lawyer on the case.Silent and tense the room was as everyone was preoccupied with their thoughts, waiting. “What did you eat this morning, Asher?” Rory asked quietly. Her face was pale and scrunched up in mild disgust. She didn’t like the smell emitting from Asher one bit and was trying to hold it in.“I haven’t eaten anything today,” Asher replied and eyed Rory. “Are you okay? You don’t look well.” “I’m fine,” she swatted Asher’s hand that reached out to touch her forehead. “I think this meeting is a waste of time,” Emma spoke up, edgily.“And when was your opinion on this matter ever important?” Daniel riposted, glaring at her. She almost shrun

CHAPTER EIGHTY-SIX. THE CONFIRMATION.

With the help of Terrence, Rory managed to evade Daniel’s bodyguards and the reporters and went to the hospital. She had been getting sick every morning, puking, and the things she usually ate didn’t seem eatable to her anymore. When she entered the office of the doctor who was meant to attend to her she was stunned. The doctor had bluish-green eyes with one more blue and the other more green, a bright smile plastered on his face, and some of his blonde hair falling to his forehead. Daniel was out-worldly but this man was simply striking, with his upturned nose. “Come in, have a seat, Mrs Froster.” He gestured for her to take a seat and she did. “I’m Doctor Eric, so what complaints do you have today?” The way he stared at Rory so intently made her uncomfortable and she shifted in her chair. “Nausea, dizzy spells, loss of appetite and fatigue.” She listed out and Eric gave her a meaningful look. “You do know what all these means, don’t you?” She nodded, “I do but I want to be sur

CHAPTER EIGHTY-SEVEN. DIVORCE.

Hours bled into days and days into weeks as Rory’s only solace was staying in her room, refusing to see anyone even Daniel. She had lost her child. Her baby before she could even hold it. The doctors said she was fed an abortion pill but who could have done such a cruel thing? She felt like it was the same person who had tampered with the serum and she wasn’t surprised. But why would someone go after her? The only person she could think of was Samantha. After all, she had the motive to do so.Interrupting her from her thoughts, was the door opening and Daniel walked in. She remained where she was, sitting at the edge of the bed.“How long did you know?” She was obviously talking about her identity.“The time when your leg was injured and we had to perform surgery. I asked Frank to investigate you thoroughly.” He answered truthfully. She pushed herself from the bed and faced Daniel. “Did you also deem this unimportant?”“It wasn’t unimportant and I was going to tell you the truth.”“W

CHAPTER EIGHTY-EIGHT. ACCIDENTS.

“I lurk in the shadows, unseen and unknown,I strike without notice, like a seed never sown.I twist your fate with a cold, sudden grip,Leaving you gasping as I make my slip. What am I?”Rory’s brows furrowed at the message. Thinking back to all the riddles she had been getting she realized that every time something bad was about to happen, the app seemed to know. Was she overthinking this? She didn’t believe in coincidences, so her suspicion only grew.“Aurora, is something the matter? You haven’t touched your food.” Nana Clarisse, soft voice snapped her out of her thoughts. Rory had been staying with her in the new apartment she got for her after renovating the flower shop. She knew she had a family but right now she just wanted to be alone and most importantly, her Nana didn’t know anything about what was going on in her life, so she didn’t have to think about them.“It’s fine. I’m just a little tired, that’s all.” She gave a tight-lipped smile to the older woman, not wanting to w

CHAPTER EIGHTY-NINE. BACHELOR.

Daniel was behind his desk, Oliver seated in front of the desk and Rory at his side. “First, we have to put all the clues we've had so far for the past three years,” Daniel said. “Three years? Didn't everything start this year?” Rory furrowed brows. “I’ve been receiving threatening messages from an unknown number after Blaire’s banquet. The first one was sent to Malcolm: ‘Sleeping beauty has pricked her finger.’” “And you didn't think to tell me? That my kidnapping was not by the Devanes?” Rory’s voice hardened. She wondered what other things he was hiding. Their hug at the hospital didn't mean their relationship was fixed. She wasn't sure if their relationship could ever be mended. “Let’s not stray off-topic for now. We know that the person involved likes riddles but is more straightforward when speaking to Daniel which means he has a personal vendetta against Daniel. Targeting Daniel is the goal since he attacked his mother first.” “The person also loves anagrams and is
