Introduction

Hi! I am Cherry This is me trying to let you get to know the main characters in this novel. Doing this would help you know some things and understand why they behave the way they do. It's my hope that you'd love this story. Let's start. This story would be written in three pov's; the main characters (Jake and Alice) and my pov for other characters, so don't get confused while reading. The setting of the story is New york city. Jake Gavingstone: 37 years old. Six feet, two inches tall. Jet black hair and hazel eyes. Speaks three languages, English, Spanish and Japanese. He lives alone, content in his loneliness, filling the void with his children, work, friends and family, having no time for serious relationship with women. Alice Singer: 26 years old. Five feet, eight inches tall. Auburn hair and light blue eyes. Very positive, refusing to show people her pain. Loving daughter to a father that doesn't love her. She works two jobs, one job in the morning as a staff in a coffee shop

Chapter 1

Jake I closed the door with a soft click, making sure it didn't make any noise that would rouse the twins from their sleep. I wondered how they would take the news of me finally putting them in separate rooms; later this year, they would turn seven and I wanted them to get used to each of them having a space of their own. A small smile crossed my lips when I imagined Kelvin shooting down the idea, not because he didn't want a room for himself, but because he didn't want his twin alone. An involuntary sigh fell off my lips, as I did not like the fact that Karl was so timid and scared of everything. It never ceased to amaze me, the difference between them. The two were as different as night and day, although they looked alike. We all never had trouble telling them apart because their voices were different, the same as their preferences and behaviours. A thought of Victoria saying something like, 'that's what makes them special. Why have two that act like one when we can have two act lik

Chapter 2

Alice I stood, watching in disbelief as David opened my purse and took the money in it before placing it back on my dressing table. He turned and paused when saw me standing by the door, having caught him stealing from me. He then proceeded to act like it was no big deal, not saying anything to me as he walked past me, whistling loudly as he went down the stairs. The audacity and the lack of remorse or guilt that I saw on his face as he passed made me snap. I immediately turned in the direction of the stairs, walking faster than I should have since I just came out of the shower and my body was still wet. I took the stairs two at a time and went into the kitchen where my half-brother, David; my half-sister, Mallory; my stepmother, Vanessa, and my father sat at the dining table, having breakfast like one beautiful family. "David, why would you take my money from my purse?" My voice shook with barely concealed rage as I watched my twenty-five years old brother tilt his head to the side

Chapter 3

Jake I sat still, watching my friends hold themselves as they laughed hard after they heard what happened to me. I should have known to tell my cousin, Ella, about it would mean them knowing what transpired. Take it from me, never tell your cousin, who is dating one of your best friends, the awkward things you experienced. "If you two don't stop laughing, I'll take my leave," I told them. Miles and Justin ignored me and kept laughing like that was all we had to do today. I rose from my chair and straightened my jacket, preparing to leave. The look on my face, plus my checking my golden wrist watch must have told them I was serious because they immediately stopped laughing. "We're done now. Sit back down, don't worry." Miles said, trying his best to keep his face straight. I turned my head towards Justin who immediately covered his silent chuckles with a loud cough. I didn't see it but I knew Miles kicked Justin's leg under the table. "Ouch!" Justin yelled, bringing his leg up so

Chapter 4

AliceI waited at the part of the emergency room where relatives or people, in general, could wait for whoever it was they were waiting for. I knew my smile was goofy, but I just couldn't hold back the excitement I felt. I raised the hand which had the ring on it, studying for the umpteenth time, the ring that I was given by the love of my life. To me, this ring marked the beginning of a new life, a life with someone who loved me, someone who cherished me. Soon, I would leave my family behind, and begin afresh with Dave.Your debts won't go away, you know... A voice in my head said, but I immediately shut down the thought before it could ruin my afternoon. "Hey, babe." I heard a familiar voice say and I rose sharply, almost forgetting that I had things on my laps. "Easy there." He said, helping me steady the cup of hot coffee I knew he'd appreciate. He didn't like the hospital coffee and said it tasted like death, so I made it my life mission to bring him coffee whenever I could."Hi

Chapter 5

Jake I got out of the Rolls Royce, buttoning my jacket as I looked around the house I was raised. Okay, maybe house was an understatement to the huge stone mansion with many rooms and space for a small country to live in. I released the breath I didn't even know I was holding, preparing my mind for whatever it was my grandmother wanted from me. I looked at the man that had been my driver ever since I was a young boy, trying my best not to frown even though it was all I wanted to do. His constant meddling in my affairs never failed to annoy me, even though I knew it was coming from a place of concern. I had instructed him to take me to the graveyard so I could visit Victoria's grave, only for him to turn while I was busy going over some paperwork, taking me here instead. As I opened my mouth to give him a small piece of my mind, my grandmother walked outside, looking normal for a woman who claimed to be feeling under the weather. She stood on the huge landing after the wide stone step

Chapter 6

Alice My clothes clung tightly to my skin, forming a second skin as I crossed the road, hurrying to get to work. The dark clouds I had seen as I stood on the rooftop of the hospital soon gave way for the rain. The ideal and sensible thing to do would have been to wait out the Rain, but sensible and ideal won't make me any money, not when my shift started over forty minutes ago. While my first job of the day required me to smile and talk politely to customers, my second job required me to keep talking about kitchen products. You can imagine the stress I was putting my mouth through just to get paid. The new product I was to sell a hundred of, if I was to get any bonus, was a new toaster that was higher than the regular toaster. The only problem about this was that the regular toaster was enough for them, meaning I wasn't making much that month. I prayed for a miracle, like the one I had sometime ago when someone ordered seventy-five shredding machine. It had made my co-workers go gree

Chapter 7

Jake As I spoke on the phone, talking to my team trying to get finalize a permit for a new department store in Spain, I suddenly felt chills run down my spine like I was in freezing water. I tried hard to shake the feeling, wondering why my skin had this prickling sensation and my hair was standing. At a point, I took the remote to the Aircon and switched it off, and then closed the windows too because of the cold. "Sir?" Oliver, the head of my acquisition team said, and I tried to return my focus to what we were discussing, but I found that I couldn't. The problems in Spain could wait, if I had to go there to resolve them then I would go, but for now, I needed rest. "Let's continue this discussion tomorrow by eleven, it's been a long day and I am tired." I heard a surprised intake of breath and I knew my request for the postponement of the meeting must have shocked them. It's public knowledge that I didn't rest especially when work was to be done. "Yes sir." They chorused, not eve

Chapter 8.

AliceThe first I saw when I opened my eyes was a pair of blue eyes, looking down at me. I saw curiosity and concern in their depths and I tried to smile. The action caused a sharp headache to hit my head and I groaned loudly, squeezing my eyes shut.“Are you hurt? Should I call Susan?” The little boy asked me worriedly, his eyes kept bouncing between the door and me. I shook my head gently before I remembered I had a mouth of my own.“I'll be fine, Kid. Where am I?” I asked, looking around the sparsely decorated room. Apart from the bed I was lying on, there was a small dresser and a stool in front of the dresser. The room was painted a shade of lilac that felt relaxing. The tall curtain at the left side of the room was closed, but the one above the bed was drawn apart, allowing some sunlight into the room.“This is my house. My dad brought you home last night. You were wet and sleeping. He told my aunt that you begged him not to take you to the hospital.” The little boy with the cute
