61| Rune of Destrcution

Dorian halted in his tracks. His hackles rose. He turned around immediately, Kai coming to the forefront. “How did you know?” If Jared knew then so did his father and so did others and that just added to Serena’s dangers.    Jared’s unwavering gaze remained neutral. He neither looked triumphant, nor did he cower when Dorian glared at him. “This town isn’t very big and we are supernatural creatures. Don’t think that people will not know when something happens.”    “So you think me becoming the king would add a benefit?” Dorian cut the chase and directly asked because he saw only the downsides of the position. Jared nodded. “There are many.” Dorian crossed his arms and waited for his cousin’s explanation. At the back of his mind, he knew that he was probably getting late and worrying a number of people but he knew that his co

62| Initiating the First Step

“Jared, my cousin and the alpha king suggested I become the king,” Dorian said, his voice a soft murmur against her hair. Serena snuggled into his side, and just basking in the warmth that she found in this innocent intimacy. A sudden bout of dizziness had interrupted their makeout session and her mate had carried her to her room. However, she didn’t let him leave and he easily relented, joining in the bed and holding her like no one else ever had. She wanted to savour this moment and applaud herself for taking the initiative, for not pushing him back from her personal space and somehow she could feel Dorian’s gratitude at being let in.    “And…?” she prompted, tilting her head up slightly to look at him and as if he had read her mind, he inclined his head. “I...declined,” he said after a pause. Serena felt relieved as she sagged against his side. “Were you worried that I would say I acc

63| Reproach

“I think you haven’t heard about this, but…”   “Jared has been banished from his throne.” Dorian reiterated in a clipped tone. His grandfather had called in the morning, asking him to meet the former immediately. He had left a sleeping Serena and a harried Viviane as she arrived to meet his grandfather.    His grandfather looked at him, taken aback. “How did you know?”    “I have sources,” he lied, stuffing his hands in his pockets. Despite being considered as someone who is feral, he knew better than to divulge others’ secrets. His grandfather’s lips thinned. Dorian did not cast his gaze away. Instead, he silently challenged his grandfather to refute his lies.    Alexander sighed. His grandson was st

64| Absurdity of the Dream

Her heartbeat quickened. She sat up straight. Her thumb hovered on the empty message box before she swapped on the screen and closed the app. Was it really Tomoe? Was her vision a lie? Or would she just walk into a trap by willing to meet her?    “What’s wrong?” Viviane’s voice startled her enough that her phone fell from her hand on the bed. Serena looked at the other’s furrowed eyebrow. “Ah..it’s nothing…” She flashed a nervous smile. Viviane did not prod. Instead, she handed her a mug of steaming coffee.    “When will Dorian return?” she asked, taking a sip from the mug. The hot beverage scalded her tongue.    Viviane shrugged. “Who knows? Kyle said they will go to the company. Work has been pending for a couple of days now.” Yet again the young seer felt t

65| Quenching the Curiosity

“I was thinking…” Serena peered at Dorian while the latter stopped stirring his coffee and looked up.    “And what is that?” Dorian prompted when his mate remained silent. Serena put down her spoon, the cutlery haphazardly clanking against the plate containing half-finished food. “I wanted to start going to Sedona’s.” Amidst all the trouble, the book and enhancing her skills had taken a backseat.   Dorian looked at the coffee mug pensively. A part of him didn’t want her to go anywhere and her staying here would be the safest. However, another part of him wanted to relent. Danger couldn’t be stopped even when she was in the apartment, right?    “Then fix a time, I will accompany you while going and coming back from there,” he said finally. Serena pursed her lips. Sh

66| The Spy who Vowed to Protect

Tomoe or her imposter’s text arrives while they are having a quiet dinner. Serena stills, her spoon halts midway. Dorian casts a worried glance at her before frowning at the screen. “Eat and then we will see what the person has sent.” Even though his mate nods, she glances at the phone kept beside her on the table now and then, her gaze wary.  After dinner, Serena opts to clean the dishes and this time Dorian doesn’t refuse like he does every other day. She guesses that this must be his way of trying to divert her mind. Tension vibrates in every part of her body. She is eager to know what the person has said in the message, but at the same time, she is apprehensive.  Dorian watches his mate’s jittery movements, a couple of times she almost manages to break a plate and let a spoon or two slip fr

67| Strength in Grief

The car remained deadly silent. Serena leaned her head against Dorian’s shoulders, her eyes closed, but tears streamed down her cheeks constantly. Dorian’s comforting hand remained wrapped around her shoulder, his thumb making soothing circles. Serena had sobbed holding Tomoe’s body while Dorian had silently closed her hollow eyes. Then carefully he had pulled Serena away from the body and it was at the exact moment that the fae’s body burned into flames.  Serena had crumpled on the floor at the sight, her body heaving with sobs.. Dorian had picked her up silently and taken her back to the car. Kyle had hurried to open the door and now they were driving back to the penthouse.  Dorian didn’t expect Tomoe to be this loyal. She must have surely received Ophelia’s favour more than once. He gl

68| The Recounting of the Past

Serena couldn’t believe her ears. Sedona refused to look at her. Dorian on the other hand, wasn’t so kind. He growled, “Tell us everything.” The older oracle evaded his gaze. The silence sat heavy and foreboding in the room. The smoke from the incense sticks made everything foggy, Serena felt as if she couldn’t breathe properly.    “Ophelia was my dear friend. Despite me being the daughter of a clerk, and she a king’s, she never let that rank division come in between our friendship. She was carefree, brave and kind - all the qualities a ruler should possess. Unlike her father, she was forgiving and generous. Everyone in our clan and empire loved and adored her, looked up to her and were devastated when she was nowhere to be found.” Sedona paused, the distant look in her gaze deepened. Serena swallowed thickly. This was the most she had heard about her mother. Even though she met her in h

69| Outburst

His hackles rose as he looked right into Elder Noah’s eyes. The man was considered as one of the shrewdest alpha and now he knew why. His jaw clenched as he levelled his gaze to Elder Noah’s. “That concerns me… how?” He deliberately inquired. He knew what they were playing at. They knew how his mother was his sore spot, that he longed to face her head-on, to somehow wrench back the years of misery she had bestowed upon him. But he didn’t want to play as the puppet king.    “You think my mother being the Fae Queen or whatever she is will make me want to take up your offer?” He prods when elder Noah remains silent. The older man’s gaze remains calculative. In Dorian’s mind, Kai roars and rampages, which makes the human’s eyes flash red. He relishes the way he observes a bead of sweat dribble down and disappears in Noah’s white checkered-collar shirt.

70| Serena's Insecurities

Serena stared hollowly at him when Dorian entered. She didn’t know what he would think, but certainly, it would be negative. So all she could do was hang her head in shame and guilt, cry and plead her innocence and hope he wouldn’t run away or worse throw her away like her foster parents did.    Dorian was unsure how to approach the situation. His eyes darted towards the dissipating fae. Serena’s body heaved and shook as she stared at him helplessly, as if expecting him to resolve this issue. Forcing himself to act, he moved forward. His mate sat there crying and looking at the remains of the fae and it was then that Dorian’s gaze fell on the book. “Did…they come for the book?” he murmured, crouching in front of her. Serena raised her head, her tear-stained face making his heart clench. “Yes,” she mumbled before lowering her gaze again.
