Chapter 2

Three years ago, Eva and I had gone hiking together.

When we arrived at the ridge, we were suddenly caught in a flash flood in the mountains. Eva and I were soon swallowed by the flood.

At that critical moment, we had spotted a lifeboat passing by, so we had shouted for help.

The rescue workers in the lifeboat had pulled me out of the water and into the lifeboat.

My first thought was to pull Eva into the lifeboat as well, but then, Eva had suddenly let go of the pillar she had been holding onto.

I could only watch as the flood claimed her.

When she was found later on, she was already unconscious due to kidney failure, which was caused by her inhaling too much muddy water.

After going back, I had tried my best to explain the situation to those around me. The rescue workers had backed my claims, so I had thought that everyone believed me.

As it turned out, since the very beginning, Caleb was already convinced that I had done this to Eva on purpose.

It was no wonder that he had become so gentle and caring toward me since then.

I thought that he had actually fallen for me.

Now, I suddenly realized that since the beginning, Caleb had willingly approached me not because of love at all.

I remembered him looking at me with a complicated expression on our wedding night.

He had asked, "Liddy, if a day ever came when I needed your organs or something… would you give them to me?"

Back then, I was engrossed in the joy of marrying the love of my life, so I hadn't noticed the tentative and abnormal tone in Caleb's voice.

"Of course. I'll do anything for you," I had replied.

When Caleb heard my answer, he had smiled as if a weight was lifted off his shoulders. A scheming look had flashed across his eyes, but I had failed to notice it.

"I'm glad to hear that. That's great," he had said.

Since the very beginning, our marriage had been nothing but a huge scam.

I died.

Three years ago, Caleb had already found out that my kidney was a perfect match for Eva's body.

To save his true love, he had done everything with caution and put in all his effort.

After the operation, the various vital signs in my body gradually weakened.

When I was sent into the emergency room for treatment, my mom called Caleb as she sobbed. She said in an extremely trembling voice, "Mr. Grant, Liddy can't hold on anymore… Please come and visit her…"

When Caleb heard my mom's words, he frowned in hatred. "Enough, Mrs. Wells! I only answered your call because I still respect you as an elder! If you keep playing along with Lydia's tricks, I won't have mercy on you!

"Did you think I wouldn't know that Lydia won't die? Even if she does die, she owes Evie that much! She deserves it!"

With that, Caleb viciously ended the call.

Sobbing, my mom tried calling him again, but only an emotionless female voice rang out. "The number you have dialed is currently in use…"

In the next second, the nurses took my corpse out of the emergency room.

My mom's face was pale as she gazed helplessly at my corpse.

Then, her eyes turned red. Throwing herself on my corpse, she wailed with all her might. "Liddy… Why were you such a fool? He doesn't love you at all… And to think you even had his child!"
