The next morning, Brian came downstairs and saw that a maid was packing some things up. He frowned. "What are you doing?"

"Mr. Lodge, these are Ms. Torrey's belongings. She called yesterday and said that she would not be visiting anymore. So, she asked us to pack her things and have them delivered to her."

An image of Ariana came to his mind as Brian looked at the suitcase in front of him. Usually, Ariana would have finished preparing breakfast at this hour and would be waiting for him to come downstairs expectantly.

She would pull the chair out for him and try to bring up some random topics to initiate the conversation. Curiously, Brian felt as though something was missing when he did not see Ariana here today.

When he realized he was thinking of her, Brian said frigidly, "Hurry and pack them all up, then. Don't leave them lying around in the house."

"...Understood, Mr. Lodge."

Brian sat at the dining table and found that there was nothing on the table. He asked in a displeased tone, "Is breakfast still not ready?"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Lodge. Usually, Ms. Torrey would be preparing breakfast at this hour. However, our new helper is still not used to her working hours…"

"Hurry up. I need to leave for work soon."

Brian checked his watch. He was suddenly feeling quite frustrated.

Soon enough, the helper served a platter of eggs, toast, and sausages at the table.

Brian stared at the simple breakfast and cast the helper a sideways glance. "What is this?"

"Break… Breakfast?" The helper was a little scared. She could not understand what she had done wrong.

Brian responded monotonously, "I don't eat sunny-side ups, and I don't take meat in the morning. Am I paying you 20 thousand dollars a month just for you to make something like this for me?"

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry, Mr. Lodge! I had no idea…"

"Mr. Lodge, she's a new hire. I'll have her prepare something else right away."

"It's alright."

Brian had a grim expression on his face as he stood up.

Belinda came out of her bedroom just then. She could tell why Brian was upset with just a glance at the items on the table.

She began, "Ariana would usually make everything from scratch for breakfast. She'd start preparing those special delicacies at 4:00 am and cook them on slow fire.

"She would have at least 16 types of nutritious dishes ready in the morning. Life is not going to be the same anymore with her gone."

Brian knitted his brows.

"She's the one who wants to break off the engagement! She can leave if she wants! Ariana Torrey has only been at our house for three months. It's not like my life is going to fall apart just because she's gone now!" Brian scoffed inwardly.

"Grandma, I'm going to work."

"Come back here!" Belinda frowned.

"I don't care what you think. Ariana is the only person I'll ever acknowledge as your wife. Head to the Torrey residence now and apologize to her. Don't bother coming home if Ariana refuses to forgive you."

"Grandma…"

"Go now!" Belinda's words were final.

Brian had to do as she said, albeit his reluctance. "Alright."

Meanwhile, at the Torrey residence…

Bang!

With a loud crash, Ariana's bedroom door was kicked open from the outside.

Igor Torrey was positively fuming as he yanked Ariana's blanket off her body and grabbed her wrist. "Ariana Torrey, have you gone crazy? Did you break off your engagement to Brian? Get out of bed and explain yourself!"

Ariana stared at her left wrist, which was caught in Igor's grip. A small frown creased her forehead.

Even though she called Igor her younger brother, he was not actually Ariana's father's biological son. Igor was already five when Gwen married her father.

Ariana's father treated Igor as if he was his own. As the youngest member of the Torrey family, Igor was spoiled rotten by Gwen.

In Ariana's last life, Gwen had managed to persuade her into marrying into the Lodge family and handing over the task of managing the Torrey Co. to Igor. Yet, Igor was the reason their company had eventually faced ruin!

Ariana's anger flared up as she looked at the rebellious young man who was only 18. She threw a slap on his face the next instant.

Igor was momentarily stunned. He stared at Ariana in disbelief. "You… You dared to hit me?"

Ariana had always been a pushover, and she would always gently speak to Igor. Yet, she had actually hit him this time.

Ariana said coldly and sternly, "Yes, I just hit you. Who gave you the right to barge into my room like this?"

"Ms. Ariana, it was my fault. I didn't manage to stop Mr. Igor." A maid looked frightened as she stood by the door and explained.

"Shut up! This is my home! I can be wherever I want to be!" Igor yelled at the maid, who was shivering in fear.

Ariana could tell how obnoxious Igor was just by looking at the bruises on the maid's arms. She had given all of her attention to Brian in the past, so Ariana failed to realize how Gwen and Igor had created various issues at home.

"Your home? The Torrey residence isn't yours yet, Igor."

Ariana got up and walked over to the maid. She helped the maid stand straight.

There were marks and bruises of different sizes scattered all over her arms. Yet, the maid dared not utter a word of it.

"The Torrey family is wealthy, but we're not people who think we're above the law. Is there any labor law that allows you to hit your maid?"

The maid burst into tears when she realized Ariana was standing up for her.

She had wanted to leave this place for a long time. However, Igor had used his status as the Torrey family's young master to threaten her. He warned her not to tell anyone what he did to her and refused to let her quit.

The maid had had enough of these torturous days.

"Ms. Ariana, please let me leave!" The maid sobbed uncontrollably.

Gwen, who was downstairs, picked up on the commotion at around that time. She quickly went upstairs. Gwen could tell what happened the instant she spotted Igor's red and swollen cheek.

She raised her brows and widened her eyes. Then, Gwen pointed at Ariana and shouted furiously.

"How could you hit your own brother, Ariana? Have you really gone mad? First, you broke off the engagement. Now, you're hitting your family. What on earth are you trying to do?"

"Brother? I, Ariana Torrey, don't have a rude and impudent brother like him."

Ariana continued in a frigid tone, "Ms. Lambert, bluntly speaking, Igor is not my dad's biological son. Also, he's officially an adult now.

"Not only did he barge into my room without permission, but Igor had also subjected the maid to verbal and physical abuse. Look at him! That's the great son you've raised!"

Gwen scoffed. "Igor has been living here since he was still a kid. Your dad saw him like he was his own. As Igor's sister, did you have to be so particular with those things now?

"Besides, what's the big deal with him hitting a maid? It's not like we haven't paid for her medical treatment and monthly pay."

Ariana's eyes hardened. "Ms. Lambert, if Igor can do these things to a maid now, there's a good chance he'll treat our company's employees poorly in the future. Igor's probably going to ruin the company if I hand over the Torrey Co. to him."

"Ariana, you're making hasty judgments now. Igor is still young. It's not like people are born naturally as successful business owners. Besides, you've promised to transfer the company's ownership to Igor. You can't go back on your words just because you can't marry Mr. Lodge now."

Ariana knew all along how naive and careless Gwen was sometimes.

She snickered and walked over to the desk. Then, Ariana took the equity transfer agreement she had signed before the engagement party out of the drawer.

"Were you talking about this, Ms. Lambert?"

When Gwen saw the transfer agreement, her expression took a 180-degree turn. Her tone softened and was immediately laced with hints of flattery. "Come on, Ariana—Igor is your younger brother after all. If he takes over the company, it will ensure that the Torrey family legacy continues. He will also serve as your backer so you can marry Mr. Lodge with peace of mind. Isn't that killing two birds with one stone?"As she spoke, Gwen quickly pulled Igor over and scolded, "What are you waiting for? Apologize to your sister right now! Who gave you the permission to barge into her room early in the morning?"Reluctant to comply, Igor retorted, "Torrey Co. will be mine sooner or later anyway! She's threatening to call off the engagement and ruin my future. Of course, I must set things straight with her!"Ariana simply watched, unfazed. She had never expected her younger brother to start coveting the family's assets at such a young age.He already saw himself to be the future head of the f

In the afternoon, Belinda called Ariana.Ariana knew she didn't like Evelyn—she was but an orphan from the Granger family and far too proud for her own good.Although Evelyn had full ownership of the family's assets, Belinda's long-standing feud with the Grangers cemented her dislike. She felt Evelyn's aloof demeanor was an act. All along, she had opposed Brian's association with her.Ariana, in contrast, was gentle and well-behaved, with a clean family background. Her temperament, looks, and academic qualifications made her the ideal future lady of the family.Still, she was aware that Belinda's kindness toward her was primarily a calculated show. That day, the Lodge's family driver brought Ariana to the Lodge residence. As soon as she entered the hall, Belinda beckoned her warmly, patting the sofa beside her. "Come here, Ariana."She nodded and approached. It didn't take her long to notice Evelyn standing across from Belinda.Just like in her past life, Evelyn was gorgeous—p

Belinda's tone was kind but firm. "Ariana, Brian has clearly been bewitched by that woman from the Granger family. You can rest assured—I'll make sure he apologizes to you properly. You are the only one I acknowledge as the future Mrs. Lodge, and no one can change that."Ariana offered a soft smile and replied, "Mrs. Lodge Senior, since his mind has already been made up, I don't think I have much else to say. I wish him and Ms. Granger the best."With that, she rose to leave, adding, "If you ever need anything, Mrs. Lodge Senior, I'll still be here to serve you. But... I think it's best we end the engagement here.""Ariana..." Belinda wasn't eager to give up just yet. However, Ariana shook her head. "I still have some family matters to attend to, so I'll take my leave now. I'll visit you another time, Mrs. Lodge Senior"With that, she turned and strode off.Watching her depart, Belinda let out a sigh.Ariana never used to be the impulsive girl she was now.As Ariana opened the

Ariana glanced down at the newspapers sprawled across the floor. Several words in large font entered her eyes: "Lodge Co. Terminates Torrey Co. Contract: Investment Withdrawn for 500-Million-Dollar Project".For a split second, her eyebrows knitted together slightly. If she remembered correctly, this 500-million-dollar project was the Torreys' current real estate development. Construction was already past the halfway mark, but now that Brian had withdrawn funding, the project wouldn't be able to continue. They would have to find another investor. However, with Lodge Co. cutting ties with them, who in Gleaston would dare collaborate with them now?At the end of the day, this project was doomed. Torrey Co. was sure to lose a substantial portion of its assets.Ariana bent down to pick up the paper. It was still warm—it must have been freshly printed and delivered to them.Brian's swift actions were obviously intended to send her a message. It was a show of power to make her understa

Brian glared at Ariana with hatred in his eyes. His voice went cold and he sounded as if he wanted to shred her into pieces."Brian! Don't be like that—you've misunderstood Ms. Torrey! I was the one who wanted to do it…""You're too kind for your own good, Eve, and that's why people keep walking all over you. I told you that you didn't have to see her!"Ariana watched as Brian continued defending Evelyn. She kind of expected it, to be honest. After all, Evelyn would always manage to get hurt every time Brian appeared. Ariana had already sensed that something was wrong from the moment Evelyn fell to her knees. Still, she didn't mind playing along to Evelyn's tune and pushing things in her direction.Ultimately, she needed to get Brian to hate her. He would then have to call off the engagement whether he liked it or not."Ariana Torrey! I used to think that you were just a two-faced, backstabbing bitch, but I didn't think you'd be so evil as well! Eve has always had a weak body. I

Gwen wanted nothing more than for Ariana to get back together with Brian as soon as possible. After all, she and Igor would both benefit from Ariana's marriage to Brian too.Ariana raised her eyebrow and smiled when she saw how anxious Gwen seemed to be. "Yes.""Really? That's awesome!" Gwen exclaimed. She continued, "I knew it! I knew that Mr. Lodge still had feelings for you. Otherwise, he'd never have asked you out on a date!""Ms. Lambert, I think you're mistaken. Mr. Lodge met with me to discuss canceling the engagement.""Then…"Under Gwen's shaky eyes, Ariana punctuated each word she said next. "The wedding is off.""What? It's off?"Gwen nearly fainted when she heard what Ariana said. Igor hurried forward to hold Gwen up. Then, he yelled at Ariana, "Ariana, you're going overboard! How could you make your own decision about canceling the engagement without talking to us? Do you even care about us?""It's my engagement, so of course I'm the one calling the shots. There

"Ms. Torrey, these are all unimportant documents. I'm sure you won't be interested in them. Let me take you to the break room," John said with a smile. In other words, John just didn't want Ariana poking her nose into any of the company's affairs.Seeing this, Ariana immediately held her hand out and said, "Show me the documents.""But…""Mr. Wagner, are you implying that you are the boss of this company now?"Faced with such a headstrong question, John hurriedly denied it and said, "I wouldn't dare! Ms. Torrey, if you want to look at them, we will let you look at them. I'm just worried that you might not understand them…""How about this—we can forget about going to the break room and head over to the CEO's office straight away. In the meantime, I'll also be going through all the company's documents that need to be signed over.""Ms. Torrey…"Ariana cut John off without blinking. She then looked at Miranda and said, "Ms. Ziegler, right? Go and get the documents for me. Mr. Wag

"Do you think this is fair to Evelyn, Mr. Lodge?"Brian froze when he heard Evelyn's name.Seeing this, Ariana pulled herself from his grip and wound her arms around Brian's neck instead, giving him a seductive look. "You're right. I've done all this just to get your attention. But honestly, the sofa is too cramped. "You've got it wrong. This money isn't from the Torrey family," Ariana said.William frowned. "No?""It's the money that my father left me before he died."In her last life, Gwen had coveted her inheritance, which was why she had schemed tirelessly to gain control of the Torrey family. The reason why she had pushed her to marry Brian was also because she wanted to get her hands on the 500 million dollars.Somehow, she found out that Belinda liked Ariana and wanted her to marry Brian, so she spoke with Belinda behind Ariana's back and convinced her to ask Ariana to use the money to resolve Torrey Co.'s financial crisis. In the end, no crisis had been resolved as Gwen had run off with the money. This time, Ariana would turn the tables. "Stop right there, Ariana Torrey!"During the intermission, Ariana excused herself to go to the bathroom when she heard Brian's voice sound from behind her. "Mr. Lodge? Did you need something?" She turned back, her voice distant, as if they were but mere acquaintances."Aren't you something else, Ariana? You knew that my company had its eye on that piece of land in South Gleaston, and you went and doubled the price, even at a loss, to buy it. What's your game? Are you really opposing me, or are you just trying to get my attention?" Brian snapped."You've got the wrong idea, Mr. Lodge. I just really liked the location. It's got nothing to do with you," Ariana said sincerely. However, Brian did not believe a word of it.Just then, Evelyn rushed over to cut into their conversation. "Ms. Torrey, you were too impulsive. How laughable."200 million dollars," he said firmly.Did she really think he wouldn't be able to deal with her?"250 million dollars.""300 million!"As the bidding escalated into absurd territory, Evelyn frowned. "Brian, this land isn't worth that much."Brian frowned as well.Beside him, Emily said lowly, "Mr. Lodge, the price has exceeded our estimated value."Hearing this, Brian smiled coldly.Ariana did not have much money to begin with. She was clearly only bidding to be contrary.Fine, then.
