Chapter 29

The roar of the private jet’s engines barely masked the sound of my racing heart. From the moment Dax had dragged me onto this plane, I’d been on high alert, searching for options, a way out—anything. But there was nothing. No open door, no friendly face. It was just me, trapped in a world I didn’t understand, spinning completely out of control.

Maddox sat on the other side of the cabin, a glass of whiskey in hand, his piercing gray eyes locked onto mine. That glacial gaze made me feel stripped bare, as if every thought I had was on display for him to dissect.

“Enjoying the flight, Amalia?” he asked, his voice calm yet laced with a warning that sent shivers down my spine.

“What do you really want from me?” My voice came out steadier than I expected, though my hands trembled at my sides.

He set his glass down on the polished table and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

“I want you to understand your place.”

“My place?” I scoffed, feeling a surge of defiance rise

The constant sound of the jet's engine became a distant hum as the plane ascended into the darkness of the night. I didn’t care about the noise or the movement of the air. Everything seemed irrelevant, as if time had stopped existing. I was caught between fear and curiosity, between the decisions I had made and the ones I still couldn’t understand.I looked out the window, watching the lights of Rome fade quickly into the distance. Everything I knew, everything that had once been familiar, was disappearing as we flew higher. What was I really doing? Where were they taking me? The question hammered in my mind over and over, but the answer was always the same: I had no idea.Beside me, Maddox sat motionless in his seat, staring out at the horizon. It wasn’t a look of love or concern. It was a cold, calculating look that always made me feel small and insignificant. He didn’t look at me like a woman; he looked at me like another piece on his chessboard. And I was well aware of that. Someho

The plane descended smoothly, the sound of the engine changing as we touched down. I was trapped in my own silence, not because I wanted to be, but because I couldn’t break it. The Dangello brothers had dragged me into their world, and now that I was in the heart of it, everything seemed unreal. The lights of Rome quickly faded as the plane landed on the runway. I didn’t know what to feel.Maddox and Dax didn’t bother to look if I was feeling comfortable or nervous. They simply stood up, as if this moment were nothing out of the ordinary. I no longer had space for questions. My doubts faded into the air like smoke. I was here with them, and that meant I no longer had control over my destiny. The ride in the car was silent. Not a word between us. Not a single gesture indicating that they cared about me, or that I cared about them. The Dangello brothers looked at me only as a piece that needed to fit into a place they had designed for me, and the more I thought about it, the clearer it b

The pain in my chest didn’t disappear. On the contrary, it grew stronger. The mansion I was in seemed to crumble on top of me, a gilded cage, but a cage nonetheless. It didn’t matter what the Dangello brothers said, it didn’t matter what they promised me, the reality was that I no longer had control over anything. I was a piece in their game, a pawn on a board I hadn’t chosen.Maddox and Dax had left me alone in one of the largest rooms in the mansion, with walls adorned in gold and heavy curtains falling over the windows. Everything in this place was designed to make me feel small. To constantly remind me that I was nothing more than another item in a luxury closet. I felt invisible, as if my presence here was nothing but a void they needed to fill.I sat on the bed, my hands clenched on the sheets, not knowing what to do or where to go. I felt a mix of anger, fear, and desperation. I couldn’t bear to be here. I couldn’t bear being controlled like this. But at the same time, I couldn’

The weight of the mansion continued to crush me, as if every corner was designed to remind me how small and insignificant I felt. The opulence was nothing but a facade, a constant reminder that I was trapped. It wasn’t just the wealth surrounding me—it was the power. A power that went beyond what I imagined, beyond what I could understand. The Dangello brothers weren’t just powerful in their world; they had enemies as dark and dangerous as they were.Maddox, in particular, was a man who not only controlled the situation I found myself in but was at the top of a network of influences that extended far beyond what anyone could see. There was something about his presence, his gaze, that made it clear that he wasn’t just a powerful man. He was someone who could move mountains and destroy empires with a single word. And I, despite everything I had been through, still didn’t know if I was his victim or simply another piece on his chessboard. That morning, unlike others, there was no silence

The mansion seemed colder than usual. It wasn’t just the temperature. It was the feeling of being trapped in a place I couldn’t escape, surrounded by luxury and opulence but with no freedom. The endless hallways, the walls adorned with valuable tapestries, the large windows letting in light from a distant sun, all reminded me of how small I had become. The Dangello brothers showed no interest in me. In the first few weeks, their indifference was almost palpable. They went on with their lives, managing their empire of shadows, while I became just another part of the mansion, a space that only occupied room. My presence didn’t affect them. I had been absorbed into their world without being able to deny it.Maddox, in particular, remained distant. His cold, calculating gaze left no room for emotions. At that moment, I didn’t care. I was furious, resentful of everything that had happened, everything they had done to me. My world had been shattered into a thousand pieces, and the only way t

The sound of footsteps echoed through the mansion’s hallways, each one resonating in my mind with the same intensity that my heart was beating. I couldn’t avoid it: everything seemed out of control. Despite my apparent calm, every minute that passed made me feel more like a puppet, tied to a fate from which I didn’t know how to escape. What had started as a simple power struggle between the Dangello brothers and me had now turned into something much bigger, more dangerous, and every day that passed, the shadows of the enemies surrounding us grew longer.Maddox, Dax, and Maxilian still remained indifferent, but at the same time, it was clear that each of them played a part in what was unfolding. Despite everything I had been through, there was something I couldn’t deny: the tension between us. It wasn’t the same indifference it had been in the beginning. Something had changed, but I couldn’t identify what exactly it was. Perhaps it was the closeness. Maybe the way each of them’s inner s

The air was heavy that morning. Although the sun shone through the mansion’s large windows, the atmosphere inside the house remained tense, like an imminent storm. Several weeks had passed since my confrontation with Maddox and Dax. My life, which had once seemed so predictable, was now in constant turmoil. Although I hadn’t made a final decision yet, the situation had changed. The Dangello brothers were no longer simply figures imposing power; there was more to them, something I couldn’t ignore.Over the past few weeks, something inside me had begun to shift. The anger, though still present, had calmed down a bit. But that didn’t mean I had fully accepted everything around me. I knew something big was about to happen, that the truth about the Council and the real role I played in all of this would finally come to light. The days that followed my last confrontation with Maddox and Dax were tense. The mansion, with its imposing air and constant silence, had become a place that no longer felt welcoming. Every corner, every hallway, reminded me that, although I was surrounded by luxury and power, I was truly trapped. Despite my attempts to maintain composure, the truth was clear: I no longer had control over my destiny. The Dangello brothers, the Council, the external threats, everything seemed out of my reach.Weeks had passed since Maddox had left me with the decision to join them or face them. My mind had been revolving around the same dilemma, and although I felt I couldn’t escape, something within me still fought to maintain a semblance of control. What did it really mean to be part of their world? What sacrifices would I have to make to stay safe? And most importantly: was I truly a part of this game, or was I simply another piece they would move when they deemed it necessary?Today, however, someth

The return to the safe house was silent. None of them needed to speak. The glances exchanged in the rearview mirror, Maddox's tense grip on the steering wheel, the way Amalia kept her eyes fixed on the road… it was enough to understand that something had changed. The Council wasn’t dead. Only asleep. And now, it had awakened. As soon as they arrived, the protocols were activated. Ivan ordered all access points to be sealed, triple surveillance installed, and the war room prepared. The atmosphere was electric. Every step, every command, every look carried the certainty that the real enemy had finally shown its face. But Maddox said nothing. Not yet.He went straight to his office, with Amalia following silently. When the door closed, the silence grew heavy."You knew," she broke the tension. "Say it, Maddox. Just say it. You knew."He turned slowly. His jacket was open, sleeves rolled up, and his gray eyes darker than ever."I knew there were strange movements," he admitted. "But not th

The early morning was a living, throbbing creature. And Maddox was already awake before the first ray of sunlight pierced through the bulletproof windows of the house. He was dressed in black, as always, immaculate even in chaos. His movements were controlled, as if each one was calculated for combat."We’re ready," Ivan reported as he entered the meeting room.Behind him, Dax and Max came in almost at the same time. Both wore the same serious expression, although Dax still carried the hangover from the night before."What does the satellite report say?" Maddox asked, without lifting his gaze from the digital map in front of him."Movement to the north. Heat points in the area of the old gas factory. They shouldn’t be there," Max replied, crossing his arms."Then they’re testing our surveillance," Maddox murmured.Amalia appeared in the room a few seconds later. She wore a fitted jacket over a black shirt, her hair tied in a braid that gave her a fiercer look. Her eyes met Maddox’s for

She no longer hesitated. She opened the door silently and saw him.Derek."What are you doing?" she asked, not lowering her weapon.Derek raised his hands slowly."I was heading to the office. Maddox asked for the blueprints of the southern entrances.""Maddox is in the east wing."Derek hesitated for a second. Just one.And for Amalia, it was enough."Stay still," she ordered. At that moment, the silent alarm vibrated on her device. An encrypted message from Ivan."Communication intercepted. The night fell violently over the land.It wasn’t just any nightfall. It was a declaration of war.The sky turned dark faster than usual, as if the universe knew something was about to break.Inside the mansion, the atmosphere was different. Dense. Silent. The kind of calm that only comes before disaster.Amalia was in Maddox’s office, alone, with the documents she had stolen. In front of her, a map of the tunnel system that crossed the border. Smuggling routes. Coded names. Black-and-white photographs of faces that shouldn’t exist. The list of the Council’s traitors. And in the center, a single word repeated again and again:ARES.Behind that name was Maddox’s past. The real reason why it all began. And the man who was now about to unleash the final fire."Amalia," said a firm voice from the door. She didn’t flinch. She knew he would come. He always did.Maddox stepped inside. Imposing. Impeccable. Wearing a black suit that contrasted with his gray eyes, now sharper than ever."I knew

Dax smoked on the stairs, as if he needed distance not to explode. But it was Maddox who broke the silence from the center of the room, his voice firm like a sentence:"This kind of people doesn’t play. They don’t send threats. They leave marks when they’re ready to hunt. If this appeared… then we’re already inside their game.""What do they want with me?" Amalia asked without turning around."Not you," he corrected, with a cruel half-smile. "They want what you represent: a weak spot. Something human. A crack in the Dangello empire."The words hurt. Night fell like an omen. The Dangello mansion felt more like a military base than a home. The silence in the halls was no longer peace—it was threat.Amalia locked herself in her room, her mind pounding like a bomb. Every step she took pulled her deeper into a labyrinth she could no longer escape. And she knew it. But she still didn’t know how she was going to survive.A knock on the door. Just once. She opened it.It was Maddox. The black suit. The shirt without a single wrinkle. The watch that marked control. And those intense gray eyes that left no room for lies."I need you with me," he said bluntly. "Now."There was no option to refuse. He led her to the war room. The morning arrived with a heavy air. Not even the sunlight could fully pierce through the gray clouds gathering over the city. At the Dangello mansion, the atmosphere was just as dense. News of Pietro’s public execution had spread like wildfire through the criminal circles, sending a clear message: the Dangellos do not forgive betrayal.Amalia woke up early, her body still aching from the tension of the previous night. She showered in silence, staring at her reflection in the mirror. There was something new in her eyes: it wasn’t resignation—it was resistance. She had crossed a line, and there was no turning back. This wasn’t just about survival anymore. It was about playing smart. When she came down for breakfast, Max was already in the kitchen, sitting with a coffee in hand and a pile of papers in front of him. Lev, on the other hand, remained in the safest wing of the mansion, unaware of what was really happening in the empire’s underbelly."Good morning," Amalia greeted with a sli
