2024-10-29 19:42:56The pain in his head slowly subsided to a dull ache as Arthur and Alice cleaned the wound that Rex received from the knobbed club that was struck against his skull hard enough to cause bleeding. Seeing the wound on the neck of Rupert’s lifeless body that lay not far away gave him a good idea of what happened to him without having to ask.
Looking around, his eyes settled first on Felix as he sat rubbing the lump on his head before continuing until they found his wife and her aunt. “She’s getting worse, isn’t she?”
“She drained him of his blood,” Alice said with a shaky voice. “I don’t know. Is it safe to stay around her? Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to come back to the surface. We’ve only just gotten here and look what’s happened.”

Eyes were moist from gratitude and relief of their long and arduous journey finally ending as the travelers entered the compound that was once a health camp, but now served as their home.Felix excitedly gave Oriana and her family a tour of the place. They took extra time in the spa location that offered each of them a clean robe, slippers, and a set of spa pants and top for them to change into once they’d cleaned up.Imogene and Oriana were eager to experience the shower. Having lived their lives in the wilderness, they were only mildly aware of the concept of indoor plumbing and heated water being pumped through pipes for washing. The awkwardness of newness while getting to know and trust each other went on for days before a sizeable horde of zombies found a weak point in the long neglected fence and they were forced to work together to fight them off.Vernon and Imogene proved incredibly efficient and adept at taking down a large number of zombies between them. When it was all over, Rex -who was grateful for such assistance- spoke their praises loud and clear.Imogene explained that, as wanderers, they stumbled into an infested area and met up with zombies on a regular basis for a considerable length of time until they were able to find a territory more sparsely populated with them. They quickly developed a method of working together to protect each other while swiftly eliminating the threat.Oriana wasn’t quite as bold as her sister and brother-in-law in battle, but she still managed to hold her own against them. It took only a matter of days for them to put their heads together and create a sturdy confinement for the alien that would allow them access to it without worry. When they were shown its clever conveniences for the sake of the caretaker, Olga, Rex, and Kendra were not only relieved, but impressed by the fact that most of the ideas came from Felix.Being the family handyman, Rex took his time inspecting the facility. His broad smile when he informed them that he couldn’t have done better- or maybe not even as good- made Kendra’s heart swell with pride for her cousin. As planned, the mission began the following day. Small groups were sent out to all corners of the earth with the orders to set off the virus within a month of the onset of their mission. This would allow time for some of the travelers to go great distances. They felt that even if the virus was released earlier by some than by others, the aliens wouldn’t have time to understand what was happening and come up with a solution before the entire race was contaminated.They were right.Within six months the elimination cure was released and the planet was, once again, in possession of the humans.The leaders of the planet who had partnered with the aliens contracted the virus and were not cured by Olga or any other member of the crew. It was time for new blood. They wanted new leadership that was capable of displaying compassion and love. Not just for the humans, but for all living things as well as for the planet.

“I wanted to wait until we got the planet back so that I could take you on a nice honeymoon,” Felix admitted as he gave his new bride a light kiss on the lips.“I’m glad that you didn’t,” she said as he protectively guided her through the crowd to the head table of the reception area that had been set up in the courtyard to accommodate all of the residents.The ceremony was kept short and, unlike his reception after his marriage to Ari, there was no alcohol served. Olga sat in the corner of the room in a deep trance state while Rex carefully lowered his wife into the ice bath that the lovebirds had prepared. Even with the stress and concern over Kendra’s condition, he was able to find a bit of joy in the news that Felix and Oriana were to be married. He wanted nothing more than for his family to be happy and whole.By marrying Oriana, Felix was burying the intense sadness and guilt that had ridden on his shoulders since Ari’s death. He didn’t believe that Felix was responsible for the poor young woman’s death and he hated to see the man punish himself with such grief. His marriage would change all of that. In turn, it would change the dynamics of the family in a good way. Rather than administer a dose of the elimination cure that would equal the normal amount placed in an inoculation, Olga opted to systematically treat her niece with a minuscule drop under the tongue, while monitoring her in between each dose. Although it didn’t kill her as Olga had secretly feared, the tiny doses of the elimination cure made Kendra violently ill with flu-like symptoms.In order to keep worried and curious eyes and ears away, Olga capitalized on those symptoms and lied to the other healthcare workers by insisting that her niece had, somehow, contracted some type of virus and should be quarantined. This also gave her the excuse to constantly monitor Kendra while she was undergoing a process that was unfamiliar with unknown results.At one point, the older woman wanted to stop the treatment for fear that it was doing more harm than good, but Kendra wouldn’t hear of it.“I can feel my body changing inside,” she in

Kendra had a difficult time keeping her mind focused on hunting during the day to the point that her husband softly asked what was wrong when they were out of earshot of the other hunters. She’d gone to bed the night before to find him in an exceptionally amorous mood and hadn’t wanted to ruin a night of passion with such a topic. So, she’d kept it to herself and done her best to get some sleep.When morning came, he was up and joining the rest of the hunting crew before she had one eye opened. There was just no appropriate time to speak to him about it. Until then.After looking around to make sure that they were alone, she’d quickly shared the information with her husband and then begged that he not let it affect him to the point that the others would notice. It was at that precise moment that he realized the position they’d put themselves in by curing the zombies and inviting them into their home. If

By the end of a fortnight, the compound had another twenty recovered zombies joining their cause. Kendra and Rex were kept busy hunting to keep food on the table. Eddie proved to be an adept hunter. He also was wise to the areas that the zombies favored. They took advantage of both of these things whenever possible.It took a while for the recovered zombies to regain their full mobility and strength. The gymnasium was put to good use for this. On more than one occasion Olga thanked and praised Rex for guiding them to this fabulous place that they called home. It was as if he knew that they would be building an army and would be in need of the facilities the property offered.Once a recovered zombie was functioning normally, he or she was put to work. A zombie rescue team was formed under Kendra’s guidance and select males and females were recruited from amongst the healed to assist in capturing more zombies for healing. &

Everyone held their breath while they waited to see if the cure that Olga released in the human zombie’s cell was going to work. No one was more eager to see success than Kendra.She already knew about the puddle of goop that reminded Felix of vomit before he’d told them because she’d slipped out to the confines around sunrise to check on the human zombies. She’d communicated with the intelligent one and told it that they were attempting to cure it. Her heart practically broke in half when its eyes watered as if it was about to cry.She spent about twenty minutes conversing telepathically with it. She learned that he could remember very little of his life as a human. He did, however, recall the final moments. He was a father and a husband. His wife was the first to contract the disease while he was away for a few days hunting. When he returned, he found her eating the last of their three children.

Felix entered the kitchen with a scowl on his face. The others were busy having breakfast. The only one missing was Arthur. He looked at his aunt with a raised brow. Kendra followed her aunt out of the containment building. Filling her lungs with the crisp night air, she reveled in the feeling of freedom. Being a bound captive of Alice and her alien friends for even that brief time had made a negative impact on her that brought forth the other bad memories of being badly used that she struggled to keep buried and would one day have to find a way to release.She’d stayed behind with her aunt after the others left to monitor the progress of the alien’s turning. It took several hours before they were beyond the intelligent zombie stage and beginning to rot. Since it took months for a human, Olga was pleased. By the time they left, the three alien zombies were lying on the floor, immobilized.
