“Where are you going?” Logan asks as soon as I come out of my room wearing a shirt and some jeans. He sits on a couch and eats some ice cream while scrolling through social media.
“Outside?” I suggested and cocks an eyebrow at him. “Why aren’t you at the training grounds yet?”
He sighs. “Holiday. Nothing I can do about it.” He finishes the rest of his ice cream before studying me again with a curious look. “Seriously, Zarah. Where are you going?”
I purse my lips as I debate whether I should tell him or not. I just remembered something from my past. Something I find irrelevant, but I have to deal with it right now, so it won’t become a problem.
Also, I wanted revenge for what happened in the past. Again, it’s pretty minuscule compared to what I will face in the future, but getting back at your cheating boyfriend is something that I don’t want to throw out.
“I’m going to see Kain,” I answer.
Logan suddenly has a teasing grin on his face. “I see. Well finally. It’s about time you two would make up and go on a date. Send him my regards while you're at it.” He says with a wave.
Kain was my cheating ex-boyfriend from the past. We had been dating for five years since I was 16. In the past, I had no idea that he was cheating on me for the past two years until I heard that Logan had beaten him to a pulp because he was the one who caught him.
This time, I want to be the one to catch him. And, of course, I won’t even do it peacefully. Back in the past, I learned about their usual dating spot and the schedule for their date. I hope that nothing has changed, and I will catch them red-handed.
“You know what?” I grin mischievously as I look at Logan. “Why don’t you come and tell him that yourself?”
Logan gives me a confused look. “And be a third wheel? No, thank you.”
“Please? It won’t even be a date. I won’t exactly see him if you know what I mean. I may need my older brother for what’s about to happen?” I hope that I gave him enough of a hint for him to agree.
I was somehow relieved when I saw the suspicious look on his face as he chewed on the popsicle stick. “Zarah, what happened?” His voice lost all its playful demeanor when he asked the question.
I averted my gaze and pretended to look troubled, like how I would imagine myself if I had found out about it during my previous years. Now, it doesn’t even bother or hurt me.
“Just come with me, please?” I pleaded. “I mean, you’re already dressed.” I gesture at his polo shirt and jeans.
Logan spits the popsicle out of his mouth and grabs the keys on the coffee table. “Let me just get my shoes on. And some brass knuckles.” He whispers the last part darkly, shocking me in the process. He looked back at me with a smirk. “You know. Just in case.”
As I watched my older brother heading for the shoe rack, I now had second thoughts about inviting him. I probably miscalculated how protective he was of me. Either that or I just never noticed.

Logan and I walk through the plaza and into the public park. I looked around for a familiar face and kept glancing anxiously at my wristwatch.
4 pm.
I am pretty sure that it is the right time and right date. How come I haven't seen them?
Great. Maybe it was one of those days when they don’t go out on a date—just my luck. I sighed and glanced at Logan when I saw that he had stopped walking.
“Logan?” I call for him. His face contorts into anger as he glares at something in front of us.
And bingo. It’s my cheating ex, who’s currently kissing a girl out in public.
“That fucking bastard.” He whispers alarmingly as his hands fisted at his sides. I have to run and grab his hands when he starts going over to him.
“Wait! Logan.” I hiss as I pull at his arm.
My older brother paused to give me a worried look before offering me a pained smile. “Don’t worry, Zarah. Let me handle this.”
“Logan, I’m 21. Stop treating me like a kid who can’t handle cheating in a relationship.” I mutter under my breath when I see Logan staring at me with wide eyes. At first, I wondered why he would give me such a look until I realized that the old Zarah was an emotional train wreck in the past. Right now, I would(should) be bursting into tears.
Oops. Perhaps I should slowly ease down on the changing part before they really begin to suspect if I am their real daughter or not.
I let out a loud gasp while clutching my heart and feigning heavy breathing. “Logan, it’s fine. I already expected this.” I hiccuped dramatically and almost cringed at my horrible acting skills. “I...I just simply want to see it for myself. I guess my source is true.” I wipe some imaginary tears from my eyes while glancing at Logan. By the drawn eyebrows on his forehead, I can only hope that it was a sign that he bought my terrible acting skills. “Please just let me handle this. I want to do this on my own.”
Logan studies my face for a while. I can see the turmoil of emotions in his eyes. He sighs and places both of his hands on my shoulder. “Call me when you need me, and I will instantly break that guy’s face for you.” I look up and give him a curt nod before turning around and heading for my ex, cuddling with his sidechick on a park bench.
Sorry, Logan. But you won’t be getting to hit my ex in this timeline because I would be the one to do that myself. I just need someone to pull me back when I go overboard.
As I got closer to the two of them, I finally heard their conversations.
Kian let out a loud and tired sigh. “Sam, I really want to break up with Zarah so we can openly date. Unfortunately, the girl is a wreck. Who knows what she’ll do if I break up with her.” He says, and the girl snuggles closer to comfort him.
My eyes darkens, and I let out a silent and dark laugh.
Wow. Does he really think that highly of himself? That he thinks I would harm myself because he would break up with me? The last time I checked, I simply cried when I found out that he cheated. That was it. I am only doing this for revenge and satisfaction before my real work of saving the world begins.
I pause my approach, so I can hear more of their conversation.
“I feel sorry that you have to be dating such a girl. I mean, she doesn’t even have a talent. What kind of future huntress would she be without one?” The blonde girl replies.
I grin silently in the shadow.
Yes. Please make fun of me even more so that none of the guilt I will soon experience for hitting you guys over the head will remain.
“I actually thought that she was something special. She belongs to a family of the best hunters and huntresses. I just thought...you know. But I could never have guessed that she would be such a reject.”
“Then what about me? Why do you date me when I am not from a well-known hunter family?” The girl whines. Her voice makes my hands shake to the point that I want to strangle her already. It’s irritating.
Kian leans in to peck her on the lips. “Sam, your skills and talents are real. Why would a pretty girl like you compare yourself to some reject like her?”
Reject. Reject. Reject. Oh please! Their talents are nothing but fodder compared to mine.
I finally snap, and as the two of them began kissing, I walk over to them. I rest my arms against the back of the bench where they were sitting. “So you’re saying that this Sam girl is a better huntress than me?” I grin innocently. The couple jumps away from the bench while screaming profanities for getting spooked.
I wave at Kian. “Hi, Kian. Long time no see.” I say sweetly and jump over to sit on the now-empty bench. The couple were too shock to see me that all they did was gape at me.
On the other hand, I observe the girl. She is petite and slightly curvy, especially in the top part, with blonde bob-cut hair. I know this because she was flaunting her muscles and curves by donning a very body-con tank top, which did not impress me.
“So this is the girl you want to replace me with?” I raised an eyebrow and gave her a head-to-toe look. “She’s just a pretty face, if you ask me.”
“Zarah, I-” Kian starts to say, but Sam seems tick off at my comment from earlier that she cut him off.
“Well, of course! I am not some talentless loser like you!” She growls and pulls Kian closer to her, like I was about to steal him back.
Next, I lock my gaze on Kian. He has a guilty expression on his face. Kian was attractive, but his useless talent for imitating animal voices kept him from becoming popular.
“You can have him,” I say to Sam as I get up from the bench. “I may have no talent, but my fighting skills make up for it,” I tell her with a genuine smile. “I simply came here to break up with him and save you both the trouble of talking bad behind my back like the cowards you both are. I am a Winters, why would I settle for something less?”
“Coward?” Sam scoffs and pulls away from Kian. “I’ll show you what a damn coward can do!” Sam spreads her hands out in front of me, blinding me with a bright light. I had to close my eyes because of it. As her fist began to move, I heard her footsteps get closer and felt the rush of wind. I grabbed her attacking hand and used her momentum to throw her to the position where I remembered the bench was.
I lost an eye back in the original world due to a demon spitting poison on my face. Getting blinded isn’t a problem for me. I won’t let a petty trick like that get the better of me.
I felt Kian’s movement from the sound of his feet on the ground. That coward.
I moved back and allowed him to briefly pass in front of me before I brought my knee up and hit him on the gut with as much force as I could. I heard him cough before he fell to the ground.
“What’s going on here? Are you two ganging up on a blind girl?” A foreign voice spoke behind me, which startled me enough to almost attack him as well.
“Um…I am not blind. I am just temporarily blinded by a dumb blonde, who’s now coming after me again.” I say and raise my foot to deliver a kick to Sam’s chest. I grin when I heard the satisfying thud on the ground from her fall. “Thank you for your concern, sir, but I can handle this on my own.”
“I can’t just let you fight alone when you are at a disadvantage.” Says the man. I hear Kian grunting to my right. I can only assume that this stranger threw a hit at him. “Honestly, these guys are from the academy? How the hunters have fallen for two abled individuals to gang up on a blind girl.” I could hear the disapproval in the man’s voice as he spoke.
I scoff. “I am not blind, sir.” I move my body aside and counter Sam’s hit by diverting it with my wrist. I bring my knee up and grab her face blindly as I hear a satisfying crunch.
I think I just broke her nose.
“Bitch!” Sam screams.
“Ouch. That’s a foul there, miss.” The man comments.
“Self-defense.”
“Fuck-” I hear Kian grunt and suck in air before the man speaks again. “You’re good at fighting. Are you in the academy?”
“Was,” I answer, “But I dropped for personal reasons.” The place was silent now, and I can only assume that Kian and the girl were now unconscious. I rub my eyes and pry my eyes open. My vision was still blurry, but I could make out the images of Kian and Sam lying flat on the ground.
“If that is the case, then I will meet you there. As for these two, I’ll be sure to inform the principal about their misconduct.”
I look up at the person, but I cannot precisely distinguish his features thanks to the dumb blonde blinding me. “Thanks for the assist, I guess.”
“You’re welcome. But I don’t think that you even need me in the first place.” His voice is laced with humor as he says it. “May I know your name?”
“Nope,” I answer. “My parents taught me not to talk to strangers. I might be in trouble, so I won’t say my name. Sorry.”
The man laughs. “True. We’ll just have to see each other in the academy when we have the chance.” He says.
Just as my vision is getting better, the man is already walking away, and I only got to see his back. He’s tall and pretty muscular. I wish I could have seen his face, but it is a pity that he is already facing the other way.
“Zarah!” When I turn around, my brother is sprinting towards me. With his eyes laced with urgency, he grabs my hand. “Let’s go before the cops arrive.” Logan, my ever so supportive brother. I'm relieved that he didn't interfere in my affairs and instead left me to my own devices. He's even assisting me in avoiding the trouble of beating up two people. “Stop gawking and run!” He screams.
I could not help but let out a laugh. I miss my brother so much. I can only think of this time as the best bonding experience we ever had in my whole lifetime.
“Yes, brother.”
I glance at my clock. It is about 10 pm now, and I am still awake. I wasn’t planning to sleep just yet. What I plan to do right now is to hunt. I need to siphon a talent that I would have to show as my own. If I don’t have a talent, I doubt that my parents would take me seriously as a huntress. I’m not sure what type of demons are lurking in the city at this hour, but I just hope that there are some valuable demons out there. My siphon is a little tricky. It can only absorb talent from a demon with unique abilities. Thankfully, I already have one in mind. It’s not the talent that I plan to showcase as my own, but it would assist me in future events. There have been rumors about a woman behind the abandoned theaters who would randomly tell someone the date of their death. But the woman only appears when she wants to. Sometimes, she does not appear at all. It is a long shot, but I figure she must be a demon if all she can see is death.Nonetheless, it would not hurt to dig more into
The familiar sensation of awakening my talent surges all over my body. And the feeling of gaining a new power inflicts me with pain as my body is trying to get accustomed to the magic. And soon, it’s over. The magic transfer is complete. I now have the gift of foresight. Good. But now comes the next question. Should I hunt for more demons? I look at my phone. It’s already almost 11 p.m. Crap. If only the foresight demon wasn't so far away, then maybe I would have more time to hunt more demons. Come to think of it, I wonder if there are any demons nearby that I can kill to make this day satisfying? As if my new gift of foresight was answering my question, images started to enter my mind. I see a convenience store that seems to be nearby. Then, a familiar man exits it with a can of soda in hand. It took me a while to realize that it’s the driver from before. That’s odd. Why is the vision showing me this? I watch patiently as the driver drinks the whole can of soda and heads for
After my encounter with the shadow monster, I was supposed to head back home and treat my wounds. But I guess that my empathic power reacted to my needs and led me to the closest demon with the ability to heal. But of course, I needed to go through a lot of demons since they seemed to be in a pack. I managed to target the demon with the healing ability first, using my shadow weaving to heal myself before I took care of the rest. Among the pack of demons, I managed to acquire a keen eye and brute strength from them. Since I am satisfied with my talent haul, I decided that it is time for me to head back and go to sleep. At least, that’s the plan, but when I finally managed to reach my room using my shadow weaving, I sense another presence in the area. I went to grab my knife when I realized that it was already broken down and no longer useable. As I figured, I need a proper demon-slaying weapon made of sturdy material if I am to hunt every night. But I will have to worry about th
After my encounter with the seventh prince of hell last night, I decided that I need more training. And I need to get enrolled as soon as possible so I can stay in my own dorm and have the freedom to sneak off when I want to. And the only way for me to secure a dorm in the academy is if I have a talent to show. Right now, I am in the kitchen with my mother, helping her prepare dinner for tonight. Truthfully, I am nervous. I can’t show them my real talent, but I can pick one among the many other talents I acquired last night. And the one talent that I see fit to present as a mediocre huntress is: healing. As far as I remember, hunters with healing talents usually stay at the back of the groups so they can provide assistance whenever the teams are in trouble. I want to become a huntress and kill demons, but I also do not want to stand out too much or I might get picked out for important and time-consuming missions. I need to have as much free time as possible and get called on s
The following day, my father and brother took me to a weaponry store by the academy. It makes me excited that I am going to get a new weapon, but thinking back to the fact that I might have doomed myself in a potential ranking among the healers makes me less thrilled. A soft ring of the bell when we enter the store signals our presence. A shopkeeper wearing a white polo shirt with a black bow tie appears to cater to us. “Welcome to Reon Weaponry. How may I be of service?” He greets us. When he seems to focus on my father, his eyes widen in recognition. “Sir Winters, I apologies for not recognizing you so soon!” “We’re looking for a weapon for my daughter.” My father says after giving him one curt nod in recognition. He then gestures in my direction, which makes the attendant take notice of me for the first time. The man seems surprised, and I cannot blame him because I rarely come to gatherings out of shame that I have no talent. “Well, what does the young miss prefer for a weapon?
After purchasing my new weapon, we decided to head for the academy so I could enlist myself. The academy’s interior feels nostalgic for me because, in my case, it’s been a long time since I walked down the hallway. In my past life, I never got the chance to visit the academy again since I dropped out. I feel a little bit excited now because I can actually be a student here once more. And a student with talent at that. My brother, father, and I are waiting in the dean’s office since they recognize my father as one of the most respected hunters in the guild. Right now, I’m facing my old dean, who is also my father’s high school friend - Mr. Bruce Fierce. My father is telling him about my talent for healing, and the whole time that my father speaks about me, I see Bruce watching me in doubt. Mr. Bruce is not a bad person. In fact, in my past life, he died trying to protect me from an attack by one of the powerful demons. “Ducal, I believe you when you say that your daughter has fin
“Keep those shoulders tense! Don’t make your body fully relaxed when shooting those arrows!” My father barked an order at me while I was trying out my new bow. Don’t get me wrong. I already know how to shoot with an arrow. I just don’t want to stand out as much after the whole scholarship thing happened. From now on, I really have to try to keep everything low profile, even as I fight in front of people, at least. “Dad,” My brother heads over to place a comforting hand on my shoulder before he faces our father. “Give Zarah a break. She just started training.” I can’t help but smile at Logan. No matter what happens, I knew that I could always count on my brother to help me out – even when it means talking to my grumpy father about my training. “She has had the skills before, so her body should remember it naturally.” My father sighs and shakes his head before raising his head to look at me. “I’m sorry, Zarah. I might have had the feeling that you were purposely trying to fail. Of
That night, I got back in my room after some successful demon hunting. I didn’t get a talent, but at least I managed to save a few people that were supposed to die today. Even though it wasn’t much, I feel like I am slightly changing the future here, which is my real purpose anyway. My father did not call me back downstairs for training while they were talking to Archer earlier. Somehow I feel bad about the guy and a little embarrassed for myself because I know that they were getting a little too protective of me, especially my brother. I guess I can’t blame my brother for his reaction since I just broke up with a relationship and got cheated on. He must not want to see me get hurt emotionally again – not that it ever bothered me. I was merely acting to be hurt and crying for a bit in front of him, which I now consider a mistake. “How naughty. You’re still using the window when you can use your shadow weave to enter your room?” I whirl back and pin Verphegor to the wall, only to g
Green field greets my side of the window when I wake up from taking a deep nap from the back seat of our family car. Currently, we’re headed to the fair, where the new hunters are going to take their oath to become full-pledged hunters. My father is driving me to the venue, which is like an eight-hour drive from where we are but my mother and brother decided to tag along just for the thrill of it. Also, so we can turn this event into a mini family trip.A chuckle makes me turn to my left. My brother is snickering while looking at me.“I knew you’d be asleep the entire ride.”“Are those cheetos?” I fought off my groggy state just so I could straighten up and grab the bag of junk food from his hands. My mouth water as I anticipated on eating something, but when I look inside, it is already empty. I turn to him with a disgruntled expression.“Hey, I offered you some, but you were busy sleeping.” He laughs when I toss the empty bag of Cheetos towards him. “You’re a jerk,” I grumble.“Lo
My room has never felt so smaller. Imagine being in your bedroom with five demons and three hunters—excluding me. I am still on earth but even I know how hellish it feels. Never has my room felt more suffocating than ever. I am in bed, for obvious reasons. My mother and father are sitting beside my bed while Archer is leaning on the wall facing me. The five demons are by the bathroom, making sure to keep their distance from us. They are demon princes for a reason, meaning they can hide their presence from Archer and my parents. I just hope that they behave themselves and not cause any noise. “Here, dear. Say, ah.” Getting spoon-fed by my mother and being watched by a number of eyes makes me feel sick. Even swallowing the food is a struggle. The porridge is threatening to rise up to my throat. If swallowing the food is the problem, I could have endured it. The problem was, the demon prince of gluttony is in the room with us. Eating in front of him is just a recipe for disaster. I
“What are you? Insane?!” I grab his coat and pull him toward me. “Are you asking me to let him be killed?!”The mask that portrays his emotion seems to be blank. “It is not for me to decide that. I am only telling you that you will fail to save everyone if you continue to save that person.”My mind grows empty at what I wish to say. It is not because I am at a loss for words. There are just so many things that I want to ask but don’t know where to start. I know that Belphegor avoids Archer for some reason. Whether it is because he is afraid of the captain’s power or not, I can’t say. I have a feeling that there might be something more behind it.I do my best to remain calm. “Why him?” Belphegor remains quiet. I clench my teeth in anger, feeling my temperature rise again out of anger. Why isn’t he answering me? “Why him?” I demanded. “Out of all the people in the world, why does it have to be Archer? What is so special about him?” Belphegor’s mask completely lost any expression.
“Master, I do not understand.” The demon prince of gluttony nonchalantly asks me as he hangs by his feet inside my room. He was hanged using the thread that I got from Kirin’s core, an object that he gave me in return for allowing him to eat Asmodeus’s pet. “Are you punishing me because you are upset or because this is one of your kinks like brother Mammon?” Mammon chokes on the grape that he was seating. “I do not!” He protests. “Mammon, shut up before I make you sit.” I threaten him, making the demon prince of greed sit Japanese style on the floor. “Sorry.” He utters. “If not brother Mammon, then perhaps brother Leviathan.” Beel moves his head to look at the demon prince of envy, glaring at him from the corner of my room in a gloomy state. The majestic demon has tears in his ears has his face contorted with an envy expression. Gorshe and Remoire surround him, like they are trying to console Leviathan. When Leviathan sees my gaze, his eyes begin to fill up with tears and the lo
It’s pretty obvious by now that the cocoons have humans inside of them. The form of the body alone is enough evidence for that. From Archer’s pale expression, I know that he figured it out as well. His alarmed expression never faded away since he couldn’t move. If the demon responsible for this finds us, there’s no way that he could defend since he is paralyzed.“Zarah, we have to get out of here. Zarah?”I am frozen solid where I am standing as I am staring at the cocoons. There’s no way for me to figure out who is behind them. I don’t have x-ray vision. But from the flying sparrow of a demon circling the cocoons, my heart starts to sink. “Wait. Isn’t that your sparrow?”Remoire seems to have noticed us and is flying in our direction. He perches on my head.‘Master, I am sorry. By the time I found them, they were already captured.’My strength nearly left me and I almost dropped Archer. My suspicions were right. These are our comrades!“We have to get them down.”“Zarah, we can’t.”
The loud blaring of an alarm started as soon as the tremor slowly subsided. Archer and I were still holding onto each other and we didn’t even realize it until both the tremor and the alarm subsided. I withdraw myself from him quicker than I normally would when I hug my friends. “We should head to the evacuation area.” Archer hides his face by lowering his head and starts to head off first. I pause for a bit, letting the sparrow version of Remoire rest on my finger. ‘Go and scout the area. Find out what happened and make sure that the others are safe.’ Remoire nods curtly at my command before taking flight. As soon as Remoire left, I start to follow Archer. Oddly enough, as we started to walk, there were no demons in sight. It’s as if they were gone or they have all gone into hiding. The later sounds more probable, as there’s a giant demon scorpion on the loose. Archer seems to have noticed the lack of demons in the vicinity, but he was being quiet about it. All my senses were
The giant sinkhole that appeared where we once were was a huge puzzle for us. I wish I knew what it was—I feel like I should, but I am currently drawing a blank. There’s something about the crate that’s familiar. “This wasn’t part of the obstacle.” My sharp hearing picked up on what Archer was muttering. I decided to play oblivious that I heard his talking and pretended to look puzzled while staring at the sinkhole. “Zarah, how were you able to tell that a sinkhole was going to appear?” I can understand Archer’s curiosity. No one would be able to move fast enough or guess that there would be a sinkhole beneath our feet a few seconds before it appeared. My senses are just sharp enough that I was able to tell that it was coming. “The tremors on the ground. Didn’t you feel it?” I don’t want to do this, but the only way that I can slither out of his question is by gaslighting him. I lived with demons, literally, in my room. I know how it works. The key is to make up a scenario and ins
In the city, there’s an area that has been long abandoned because it was rumored to be a nesting ground for demons. But that was years ago. This place isn’t what it used to be. The nest was already eradicated and most of the demons were hunted about two years ago. The town was supposed to be safe for people to live once again, but because people were too afraid to go back, the hunters decided that it would be a good testing site for a hunter promotion exam. The group stops in front of a massive steel gate. All around the perimeter of the site stretched thick metal walls with an electric fence at the top. You know that we are dealing with land demons with long leaps if they place those wired fences on top of the metal ones. “There better be no dangerous ones here.” My brother comments. I was startled by his sudden presence since I was so busy gawking at the gates. This is my first time being here, even in my past life so I was amazed by the facilities in this area. It looks like it w
The next day, everyone was busy with the clean up. Debris, rubble, and tons of steel bars are scattered all over the campus. It was bad, but it wasn’t as bad as I had imagined. Only one building was damaged in the attack and it was the study area. If there were anyone who was happy about this, it’s the students. I wish I was lying when I said this, but I wasn’t. You can clearly see the happy faces on most of the first years because that very same building is where the demonology exam is going to be held. It’s clear that most of the first year students aren’t ready for the test, judging from the broad grins on their faces while helping to clean the place. Biron, the head professor of the subject, wasn’t too thrilled, especially when he saw the smiling faces of his students. He decided to divert his anger into yelling and ordering the students to move faster. Although I am grateful that I wasn’t part of the group that’s being reprimanded, it doesn’t mean that my situation is any bette
