Chapter 3
I look over at the girl. There was something about her that captured my attention in a strange way. As much as I tried not to stare too much, I couldn’t help it. It was her eyes. She looked fierce, as if she was ready to pounce on anyone who dared to push her buttons. The dark circles under her eyes and the saggy unbalanced look told me she had been awake for a few days now, trying not to let her guard down.
Did she think they would kill her? I’m not surprised. I think Torin and I might meet the same fate as well. I shiver as I remember Alpha’s glowing eyes and eerie smile. What did he mean by 'us making things interesting'? Perhaps he hadn’t found a victim to kidnap in a long time and we just happened to come along and make his sorrowful day much better.
I almost laugh bitterly.
“I’m sorry I got you into this mess.” I admit.
“Should have at least done it properly, that’s what you should be apologetic for” He muttered angrily. I knew he didn’t mean it. He never means it. His mouth is foul but his soul is different.
Torin was the kind of guy that refused to take anything seriously. Failed? Let’s laugh about it. Lost your dog? Let’s laugh about it. You want to kill yourself? Let’s –
This time it was different. He was actually angry. Somewhere along the way, maybe I had started believing that Torin didn’t care about anything or anyone. Life was a joke to him. I was wrong. He just doesn’t show it. Though, this was probably the first time I had pissed him off in the entire duration of our friendship starting middle school.
I had tried to kill myself.
“What happened to you when that scarred dude showed up?” I asked, recalling how he had fallen on his knees. He shrugs.
“Dunno.”
“He was scared shitless that’s what happened.” There was a humorous scoff belonging to a low sharp voice- the owner, however, was a serene twig.
“I thought she was mute.” Torin interjected. I wonder if she actually hit a nerve. There is no way she could have done that unless what she said was at least partially true.
Well, I’m not going to pretend to be a beast here, that man, there was something about him. Something wasn’t right. He wasn’t normal.
The way he clawed open someone’s throat as if it meant nothing. As if a life meant nothing. Who wouldn’t be scared?I was. It might not have been apparent, probably because I was too shocked to process what had just happened.
“You dumbasses opened the dimensional portal and entered our world, yet you are clueless as a dagger. I was expecting you to be powerful mystical beings or some voodoo crap.” She waved around her arms to exaggerate the ‘voodoo’ comment but soon winced and brought them back down. I caught a quick glimpse of her wound and it seemed like it was smaller than a few hours ago. The edges of the slashes were slowly getting approximated?
“Ignore her. She’s been here so long, she can’t tell her head from her ass.” Torin gave a scornful expression, as if he was concerned about her mental wellbeing. I might have to agree with him on this one.
I was hopeful. I actually thought we would get some answers from her but it seems like she needs more help than we do. I hope she can receive it someday.
“Real mature for someone who bowed down because he couldn’t handle an Alpha’s commanding presence.” She laughed dryly. I notice she referred to him as ‘an Alpha’ which leads me to believe that it’s not actually his name.
“Yes, for sure. His big dick energy made me lose my shit.” Every word of his dripped with sarcasm and he looked absolutely bored. I stifle a laugh because I barely have any energy left. I’d rather conserve it than waste it on one of Torin’s many questionable comments. It’s not the first and it wouldn’t be the last.
Suddenly, I feel like laughing heartily. If I was alone, I probably would have. Laughed to my heart’s content, clutched my stomach while my muscles shook, then eventually collapsed on the ground in exhaustion. What else was I supposed to do?
When one reaches rock bottom in life, you’d expect them to break down- cry their hearts out or be depressed for an eternity. While all of those things are perfectly normal and expected, it’s not necessarily accurate for everyone - sometimes you shut down and stop functioning.
Sometimes you feel like laughing because the only way this could happen was if it was some sort of sick joke.
To understand our situation better, you might need to take a look into the past.
Not so long ago, more like 48 hours.
After living for years and years, you tend to lose appreciation of time. You tend to forget the essence of which it stands for. A decision made in a split second, can ruin your entire life. A few hours. A day. 2 days. A few minutes.
That’s all it takes to lose everything.
At the end, I had nothing. At least, that’s what I thought.
I backed up against the wall and rest my head against it. I allow myself to relax- strangely, my body allowed it, even after what had just happened.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. The world was starting to feel less real now. The veil was covering my eyes, I was drifting off to sleep. I couldn’t even feel the rough hard cold floor full of pebbles and hay. I couldn’t hear Torin muttering some profanities.
Reality faded away, just as I wanted it to.
For it must, for me to tell you how it all happened.
"Wake up" I shivered. "Honey, wake up" I blinked hard, my sight was blinded at first but slowly the room around me started to brighten up. Mom? As embarassing as it was to do this as a 19 year old, I got up from bed in an instant and pulled her into a hug. I feel my throat closing, a tightness around it that was making it difficult for me to breathe. Ever since I was a kid, I had alot of interesting dreams and nightmares. This was the first time it was so realistic that it made my skin crawl. I calmed down as she hesitantly patted my back. I felt the warmth through her hands and felt relief in the fact that it was only a dream. No matter how realistic dreams are, at the end of the day, they are only dreams. "Had a nightmare?" She teased. She was just as surprised as I was. This wasn't like me at all. I pulled away awkwardly."Something like that" "Go shower, I'll make you some breakfast before school" She smiled, her brown wavy
As usual, after school, Torin invited me to play football with him and his friends. I declined. It was often like this. I didn’t want to invade in on their friend group- they had been playing football together since a long time and though I know the basic rules, I am hardly good at it. It would be uncomfortable to suddenly barge in with no experience and make a fool of myself. Instead, I opted to take a swim at the high school swimming pool, where I usually spent an hour or two after the day ended. It was in a different section of the building that remained open even though the rest of the doors were locked. The gym and the fields could be used for as long as anyone wanted to.The game rooms that had a table tennis, however, would only be available during PT.“That’s more like it.” I came up from under the cold water for long deep breaths. I was slowly getting used to the temperature- it was colder at nig
‘Maybe I should have worked out at the gym yesterday instead of swimming.’ I couldn’t help think as I tried on the suit, pulling the coat over.“What a handsome boy!” Mom gushed as she gave my head a pat. I retreated in cringe.“You’re making me sound like a dog.”My phone gave a ting sound. I took it out of my pocket and opened my messages. No matter how many times I looked, it didn’t feel real.[ Allison : You didn’t forget the color code right? I already got my dress … Me : I couldn’t forget anything you tell me even if I tried Allison : lol that’s cute&
“My dad told me to come home early, you think we could leave?” She looked hopefully.I knew she was doing it on purpose for me, not wanting me to feel bad about having to leave. I appreciated it and once again I was reminded why she was deemed as the nicest girl in our class.I nodded.“Do you want me to drive?” She offered. I shook my head, assuring that I would be fine. I think I should have let her but even though I drank a lot more, she seemed to be tipsier. The car opened with a beep and I got into the driver’s seat. It would take around 10 minutes to drop her off and then another 10 minutes for me to get home. I opened the windows slightly, thinking that the fresh air would unwind me a bit.My chest started feeling tighter and if I was an old man, I’d think it was a heart attack. It was a s
Her mouth was torn apart, the upper jaw stuck upwards and the lower jaw downwards, making it widen at an angle so obtuse that even mathematics would shy away from this one. A few of her front teeth were knocked out, some of them were intact and others were bent at weird angles, making her seem like she was 90 instead of 45. My gaze followed down to her neck, bent in a form of scoliosis along with her waist. Her arm was twisted around her neck and resting at her shoulder as if to bring herself some comfort. Her fingertips were black. Legs crossed against each other unnaturally, as if they could not be separated without surgical intervention. Her noticeable brown-reddish hair were tainted with real red. I stood there for a few minutes. I don’t think I understood what I had just seen. The man.. The man in the front seat didn’t have any such injuries. Why is she like this? Is she breathing? Is she alive? These thoughts did transiently e
“Eh? He’s still sleeping? How boring.” It was a distant voice that got closer as the sentence ended. The feeling of recovering from a dream was always a strange one. You never knew if what you were hearing was part of the dream or if it was finally turning into reality. I opened my eyes and regretted it. It was reality. I wished for a moment that it was simply a figment of my subconscious world and I’d be in my own bed after waking up. Mom would probably tell me to hurry up since I’d be getting late for school and then I’d rush down for breakfast, finding my idiot drunkard father familiarly sprawled across the couch. It would be a normal weekday morning. Could it not be like that? It didn’t matter. It was reality. No matter how shitty things feel, they are never a dream, it’s always a reality. It was Alpha, he was crouched outside the jail cell, peaking in curiously. He had the expression of a child wanting to play with his new p
Chapter 10 The words replayed in my head. It occurred to me just now, the last words she had said to me. What were the last words I had said to her? My memory grows fuzzier with each hour that passes in this place. It was unhealthy, how easy it was to ignore. It was a different world, after all. A parallel universe. Anything could happen. Was I hoping that I would find her again here? Is that not how parallel universes worked? The people were the same but since they had made different decisions, they had landed in different places of their life. It may not be possible since there was nothing human about this world. However, if dopplegangers existed, it wasn’t as if they would have a clue of who I am. Mom wouldn’t even recognize me, if she existed at all.
Chapter 11*third person pov*Alpha Ruax was sitting in his office, watching as the files gathered up on his desk. He picked one up and amusingly glanced at it, tossing it aside just as quickly. The work seemed to pile up day by day but it did not seem to bother him in the slightest. After all, he believed the work was not for him, it was for Hade. It did not occur to him that if he were to make his position as Alpha permanent, he would have to deal with such ‘petty’ work. Unfortunately, he was not one to play office nicely. As long as he had his freedom and his fun, it was all the same to him. What did it matter if the pack suffered or they went to war? It would be a nice scenery, it would be something interesting out of this boring peaceful life that Hade had so faithfully established. Why did he even work so hard fo
Chapter 14*third person*“You..”“I’m Maria.”It was the girl with the sea green blue hair. She was the one who had a corner cell in the prison.“What the fuck. I was going to hit you!” Jess turned the lights on so he could see clearly.“Don’t worry, it wouldn’t have hurt.”His pride, as a man, had taken a blow. A 5’11 man with a decent body and built enough biceps, can’t inflict pain on a 5’4 girl through a punch?“I’m kidding. It would hurt but it would just be 10 percent of the pain I can wreak on you.”
Chapter 13I don’t know how long it’s been but Hade made no effort to pull away from me. I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable. If I tell him to fuck off, would he try to kill me again?“Hade, give him some space.” It was the Beta.An animalistic growl emerged from Hade that caused me to flinch back. For a second I thought he wasn’t actually human. Well, I guess he isn’t. Something like this is probably a dream come true for most men. However, it’s not as exciting when you’re the only weak human in a pack of wolves. They will shred me to pieces and feed the leftovers to their pups.“I have no intention of touching him, just look at his neck first.”Did Hade secretl
Chapter 12JESS“I’m starving.” I complain to myself. I was alone in my room. Torin was in his- he didn’t bother coming out ever since we were left here in the morning. It was now night time and nobody had come up and offered us food. It was understandable because we were prisoners but would a little courtesy hurt ? Maybe they didn’t feel the need to kill us because they thought we would starve to death on our own? Is that what this was? A man needed his food. There’s no way I could stay awake a second longer without getting something in me. It had been almost 2 days now. At the risk of getting myself killed, I got up from my bed and opened the bedroom door. I thought, if I was going to die it might as well be for a cause as noble as food. It would be an acceptable noble death.
