Aruto gave me a curt nod back, and I couldn't help but wonder if he looked a little bit disappointed. If I did see disappointment etched in his beautiful features, it was only for a second, and then he proceeded with his chores.
"Which case?" I asked as I wore my bag over my shoulders and then fixed my clothes.
"A model double signed. She had an exclusive contract with the agency for six years, but she signed early with another agency, and she is kicking up a fuss."
"Talk about the fine print." I sighed as we walked out.
"Are you taking a cab?" Milo asked.
"Yeah, you?"
"I was thinking of staying over at your place," she said.
"Yeah sure, you still have your clothes from last time," I shrugged. " Plus I'd love to have you pay for the cab."
"Wow, frugal friends." She chuckled and then called the cab nonetheless.
"You know, Aruto could be a voice porn actor," I said, and Milo chuckled.
"Should I just set you two up? Though I do have a better guy in mind, and he is just from a nasty break up…" she trailed.
"Aruto is from breaking up with someone? Wait, let's backtrack a bit, Aruto was dating?" I asked, shocked.
Milo sighed then opened her purse to apply some lip balm.
"Yes, Annabelle. You are the only one who has taken a vow of celibacy." She said casually.
"Okay rude," I said.
Was that why his gaze was searching? If we were to hook up, would I just be some booty call?
"How did you know?" I asked her.
"Well, obviously, Aruto is attractive. So I wanted to sink my claws in him, but he was taken at the time, and now, I think I have evolved past the phase of wanting to be a 'hot rebound'." Milo explained.
"And one with an unbreakable self-esteem at that," I added.
"Oh, definitely." She laughed and then raked her hair.
Our driver arrived, and we walked towards the small vehicle to continue our private conversation.
"There is one time he was talking to me, and I swear to God, I almost came!" she said as she slammed the door of the cab. The driver turned to Milo startled, and I almost felt embarrassed for him.
-I am so sorry you have to hear that but to be honest, that has to be a typical one a.m. conversation.-
"Now, I think I'm more resigned to having a nice eating place with a muscular view, you know?" she shrugged then yawned.
Well, now he seemed more off-limits than before.
"I have tried to recruit him continuously to the agency, but he prefers the restaurant," Milo confessed.
We talked more about him on the ride home, like how he teaches kids the guitar and how wholesome he was.
To be honest, the conversation seemed to tempt me to want him to put a baby in me. Well I mean, in less than crude terms.
We had arrived just before two, had showered and were getting ready to go to bed after deciding to grab some water together and chat in the living room.
Milo had shown herself to the guestroom minutes later, and after a while, I went to my bedroom then put on my favourite red silky pyjamas.
-Alone at last!-
I smiled, and then I flipped my tied hair over my shoulders then plopped my body on the bed. I opened my bedside drawer and removed my favourite hard covered book, it had a deep purple hardcover with brown vine-like structures in the book.
The title of the book was, 'My Last Wish'.
The book was about a beautiful poor and hardworking girl called Daisy. She was smarter than most in the Country of Envia, despite being a peasant. Her one desire in life was to visit the palace library. Like me, she had been an orphan, but unlike me, she had been adopted by an abusive family.
One night, tired of the abuse that her adoptive mother's drunken escapades brought, she fled their cottage. On the road, she ran into the carriage of a nobleman, who took pity on her situation.
The nobleman had just lost his daughter, and in light of this incident, he decided to take Daisy in and raise her, as his own daughter, naturally, without informing his grief-stricken wife.
So again, she was stuck with an abusive female figure, albeit this one was more emotional abuse than the previous physical abuse.
Daisy spent her entire life reading books to escape reality, and when that was not enough, she would dress up in maid outfits and then sneak off to the town, either to buy books, watch the festival and or try new cuisines.
Despite all she had been through, she was friendly and easily lovable.
One day, she and her best friend participated in a village competition for tickets to the white winter ball, the most exclusive and marvellous ball in the entire empire. She sneaks away from the ball and enters the library to gawk at the books, the girl meets the first prince in the library and rejects the princes' advances because he was engaged.
This act makes him want her more. The prince grants her access to the castle to occasionally read books so that he could see her. After a while, The prince's fiancé Vivanna, who is horrible, finds out about his interest in the girl. Now, Vivanna is madly in love with the prince, but their engagement is contract-based. In one of the lines of the contract, the Prince and Vivanna agree to stay out of each other's love lives.
Naturally, Vivanna mercilessly tortures the female protagonist, to the point where the prince assigns her a personal Knight to watch over her. Of course, Vivanna doesn't stop being annoying. Instead, she tries to seduce her Knight so that she has more access to Daisy.
Because of Daisy's nature with female authority figures, Daisy is actually terrified of the horrific Vivanna.
Daisy confronts the prince about the nature of the relationship between him and his wicked fiancée, and the prince confesses that he was monitoring her ties to uproot corruption in the land.
Daisy, the strong female protagonist, proclaims that she is tired of just doing nothing when she is attacked, so she launches a counter-attack against Vivanna and of course, Vivanna with years of practice under her belt nearly kills her. Because of this event, Daisy's life is severely shortened and to make matters worse, she loses her memory.
This is where the title, 'My Last Wish' comes to play. But of course, she also forgets that she is dying.
When Daisy loses her memory, she begins to fall madly in love with the Knight the prince had offered to protect her. This is because he was always there for her. Seeing this happen, the prince decided to hasten his plan to get rid of Vivanna. That and yes, a little of, 'How dare you touch the person I love.'
He sets Vivanna up to fall into the same traps of corruption her father did and further bankrupts her already bankrupt land until her people, Vivanna is a duchess, become too restless and plan to stage a coup. The prince, who at this point, had already successfully assassinated his corrupt father and was now 'King', rode in with his white horse. He gave the people of the land the courage to proceed with the coup.
He has her head chopped off, and Vivanna's execution ends with the cheering fans as her people.
I was among the cheering townspeople, I mean not physically but spiritually, that woman was god awful!
But the most important scenes for me in the book were the sex scenes between Daisy and the first prince, as he is trying to win her love from the Knight.
From their dialogues! To the intensity of craving each other, the author of the book, lets you see poor village girl Daisy get more than she had bargained for.
He kept on rocking her world then forcing her to look at him so that she would remember her love for him. Of course, the prince hadn't bargained that Vivanna's former butler and one of her concubines would fall for Daisy as well.
Because of the pressure the prince places on Daisy, to fall for him, Daisy finds herself comforted by the easy men in the group to be around. Eventually, Daisy finds herself in love with all of them!
The book was the perfect spice I needed in my life.
I often found myself envying Daisy, but who didn't?
The backlash the book had received for having a free-spirited protagonist was insane, but that was normal with the book's growth in popularity. When the book was adapted into a movie, I bought my ticket among the very first people!
The book had such a positive reception that some people even cosplayed as the characters at book signing events. Still, sadly, the author never shows up to those events. Finally, just last week, I met the editor of the book, and she hinted a sequel to me!
No one had ever met the author of the book, which just added to its charm. Even the editor had confessed severally that they only spoke through emails and it was always sort of onesided. Of course, this was a simple sales pitch, and it was later debunked.
But, the thing is, the editor's confessions had never really been proven to be false.
A chill crept up my spine.
"That's enough of life's mysteries Annabelle!" I smiled to myself then switched off my main lights and let my green bedside lamp stay on.
Just one chapter.
I goaded myself as a thought formed in my head.
-Famous last words.-
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In the chapter, Daisy was confessing to her best friend that she could not choose between the men. "They are not the same, and I love them all. If only I could split my body and heart and give it to them." Daisy confessed. "But that is not the part they would love, because like you love them differently, they love you wholly." Gisselle, her best friend replied. "But then if, if I still had my memories, do you think it would be easier to choose?" she asked, tears brimming in her eyes. Daisy had spent weeks mulling over the issue. 'What if she had forgotten something that would help her have an easy time picking, or did she have to choose? If she asked for more time, would they give it to her, or would they plot other ways to make her love them more?' She had reached her breaking point. Currently, she was avoiding all of the men, and
It didn't take me long to realize that silence was the best option. It was made especially clear when my butler, Erden, had rushed three well-known physicians to the mansion even before dawn. I was now participating in my last check-up with the physicians, and I have to say, I was really close to being sent away and declared mentally unfit. The only way to stay alive long enough to figure out how to exit the book was to be quiet."Everything seems okay, my lady. Did you perhaps ingest something that did not agree with you?" The middle-aged man kneeling before me asked. He was from checking my pulse with his stethoscope, or something that looked like one, and he was currently packing it away."No, no, I know that I gave everyone a scare yesterday, but as I said, I am fine now. I momentarily forgot myself, that is all." I smiled.Like hell I am, I want to go home! Milo…Oh shoot! Milo will be so mad if I am late tomorrow."My lady, that in itse
The fact that I am receiving an official summoning must mean that the White Winter ball is near.Fuck! Why do I have to go through this?I didn't even know that I was fucking a Knight and it was more like he fucked me, I didn't even get him anywhere!-That's hardly a proper defence but still. - I sighed. -And I'm not Vivanna! I'm just a sex-starved, I mean was, I was a sex-starved lawyer who just went to sleep!-Maybe if I had gotten laid when Milo had suggested I wouldn't have easily been convinced that it was a sex dream!"Are you not going to open it? My lady?" The maid asked jolting me from my thoughts."Oh!..uh" I gazed at the letter again. In Envia, it was customary for someone to open a letter, especially an official one, before a witness for it to be considered read."What is your name?" I asked the brown-haired maid, and she frowned.-Did she frown because I am supposed to know her name, or because
"You, pick my outfit for the day." I pointed to the maid with the timidest looking posture."y-yes!" she said, and I recognized her voice as the one that had stammered outside my door. The girl had long brown hair held in such a tight bun that I was almost sure it would peel right off her scalp. Her outfit was so stiff, it was like she had starched it for longer than the recommended duration. She looked like a walking box.-I don't even think the wind would affect the dress.-Was it her first day here?Or is she acting like this on purpose?"Stay here till I come back from my bath, you alone shall dress me," I said, and the rest of the maids had stiffened."Yes, my lady." They replied nonetheless, but they each sent her an apologetic look. The 'new' maid's green eyes filled with tears, as though she had truly expected the worst. But I didn't comfort her after all, I didn't know her side."Let's go." I said to the t
I had worn the spiceberry coloured gown that Mary had picked out, and then afterwards, I had forced her to change out of her ridiculous box!We were now about to leave the estate but not before she had shown me Vivanna's office. It had been a gorgeous space; the walls were literal bookshelves while her desk sat in the middle. There were two golden furnished couches at the centre of the room. The couches sat opposite to each other and between the couches, was a globe alcohol holder with in-built cooling stones that produced a cold mist indicating the degree of coolness. On the opposite side of the room from where Vivanna's desk sat, there was a wide and lavish golden fireplace with a large beautiful painting of the dutchy sitting above it.I know that the duchy is going bankrupt, but I don't think that I would be willing to part with anything in that room. The clothes and jewels were fine, but that room. I would leave it like that.Speaking of jewels, I co
The town looked vibrant, and the people themselves looked cheerful. But that was probably because I was looking from a distance. The route to the club was not at the heart of the dutchy; it was on the hill that overlooked the town.I could see why the club failed, who in their right mind would like to travel up a steep hill when they were pissed drunk? No noble would bother with such a club, but perhaps it had been tailored to suit the townspeople. The road winded up the hill, a route which had way too many potholes. Each time the carriage shook, my body was forced against Erden's rock hard frame.I had to grip the seats at some point for stability but this, in turn, caused my hand to continuously graze his muscular thighs. For my last stunt, I stood in the jerking carriage wanting to sit next to Mary, so that I could successfully re-recite my celibate vows, without too much stimulation. But the driver had hit a pothole so deep that I smacked my hea
He had pushed her too far.Erden sighed. He hadn't had a choice, she was acting differently, and he hadn't known why. Ever since morning, had she lost her mind? Or was it a new drug this time?Still, he had expected her to tell him to see him in her 'office' or rather, her playroom. The pain she usually inflicted did very little to Erden, he didn't mind it. Hell, maybe she even allowed him to hate her. It was oddly relaxing. It was an odd feeling. Erden had never met anyone that he could hate more than himself, but…Vivanna always surpassed his expectations.Erden swore his loyalty to the prince because he admired him. The prince shone in Erden's eyes, his ideas were bright and revolutionary, but in the shadows there lurked too many corrupt nobles who thrived in the old system. He needed hands and legs, and Erden had vowed to be them. Especially to their most significant threat at political stability, Portburgh. The prince was n
"You look uncomfortable, Viva," Bea said my name as though it was a weapon."Do I?" I asked straightening my posture. "I wonder why?""Me too, your family saved a life, you know." She smiled. "As I'm sure you know, twins are akin to taboo among the nobility, and so one of the twins lived her life in a wine cellar, among rats and smelly water. Fed stale bread twice a week, on good days.""Should we name the girls?" Bea asked then plopped her legs on her desk in the most unladylike manner.-Seriously, she behaves just like Milo…- I gawked. -I should probably leave though…-I turned my gaze to the door, uncomfortable by the conversational direction."My lady, it's storytime. Don't leave." She smiled. "I desperately need to hear your answer because that will depend on the level of partnership.""Partnership?" I frowned, and she stilled."I want to help you, and in the same way I need your help.""Yet I am the o
I know, I know, I promised more Vivanna and Kassian, but as I was writing, the Envian arc turned out bigger than I thought it would. {Please don’t stone me, I am a terrible planner} So, I decided to focus on background information that will play key roles in book two. Though I wanted to add more Envian adventures, it wouldn't be fair to do so burned out; that way, I can give more thought to their relationships and the flow of the story. This is a great place to end book one and perhaps take a breather before I start planning for book two. So far, you have met or 'heard of' (ahem) the major leads, and now book two will be centred on: Daisy, Erden, Kassian, Bryant, the demon, a bit of travelling to different continents with Isaac and more of fierce Vivanna, lol, unfortunately, the bumbling and uncertain Vivanna dies in book one and comes back far more villainous in book two. I’d also like to thank you so much for reading.
“Wake Field Dutchy, ran by the Mint household, has acres and acres of farmland where we plant various kinds of tea….”The meeting went on in that fashion until finally, Augustine called on me.“I’d like to hear what Portburgh has to offer?” he said.Snickers filled the hall as whispers of ‘country bumkin’ and ‘harlot’ surfaced.“Well, this is a surprise,” I said, then stood from my seat, letting the white dress flow freely from my body.“As you know, Portburgh is on the south of Envia-,”‘Is she giving out geography lessons to stall?’….-Yes, I am-‘Probably reminding herself of its existence.’-Give it a rest.-“…and North-east of Cursix.” I cleared my thoughts, and my mind flashed back to the map of portburg in Vivanna’s office, “ You said that Aquellia and Dia were l
“Well, did you hear me call you?” the spectacled stranger prodded, ignoring the sensation in his hand.“Apparently, I did not. Do you just make it a hobby to harass the first gorgeous thing you see?”“Hah,” the man scoffed, “I’d hardly call you gorgeous.”“green is not a good colour on you.” I retorted.Seeing as I was successfully bantering with a stranger, that had to mean that he, knew ‘Vivanna’, knew me.Either way, it's best to keep chatter short. That way, I can limit the suspicions.“So? What the hell do you want.”Was I coming on too strong?“The prince says that you do not need to attend the seminar. The ceremony must have worn y-,”I placed my hand before him to silence him.“First of all, do not tell me how I feel. That is terribly insulting, but seeing as you just grabbed my hand so violently-&rd
The purple patch of discolouration on the King’s neck was proof of poisoning, yet he could stand before me, before all the nobles in the room and pretend that there is nothing wrong with him.Patricide, in nobility, is not rare. In fact, when I was reading about his death, I didn’t particularly find it shocking that his son was poisoning him, however seeing it with my own eyes…“Child, your father would be proud to see you stand here today.”I doubt it. The glimpse of him from my nightmares told me that I could do nothing to make him feel proud.“yes.” I smiled.“I heard that you lost your concubine.” He sighed, “sometimes things like that happen, but I hope that you will be careful in wrapping up this matter.”“Even though he is a fallen prince, he had allies.” The King whispered to me, “If it is not handled well, this matter could cause a nationwide war.&r
“…and now, I declare, you, Lady Vivanna Pursioe Rorei, the official dutchess of Portburgh and an official part of one of the two dutchy households in the kingdom of Envia.” The King, a frail white-haired man, announced before applause filled the room. The event was more exquisite than I had imagined. If Kassian hadn't gifted me a white and red gown to wear to the event, I probably would have been embarrassed.Still, it's ten a.m, and everyone is in dresses rather than pyjamas. I can't really say that I favour the culture of this world…‘This world’…My world? That stupid mage, saying shit like that then paring it with ‘the people involved in the reincarnation spell, ‘including you’, had their memories distorted and gave something up because what we did was against all known laws,’So, according to him, I owe a whole lotta people but have no recollection of it.
READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED. SENSITIVE TOPICS ARE DISCUSSED “Okay, last question, Why did you want to assassinate the prince of Envia.” “I didn’t.” I shrugged, “I just wanted to hit him. That can’t be classified as an assassination attempt. I mean, for god's sake, his face is soo….” I sighed. “I..wouldn't have tried to if he…if he didn’t look so much like Rodrick. Basically, it was a momentary loss of ….” I sighed then my lips sealed themselves shut before the next words could flow from me. “Hmm, are you going to proceed?” “If I don’t want to, does that mean that we can proceed with my questions now?” “Well, yes, but I do intend to pay in kind.” He shrugged, and I rolled my eyes. “When…” my voice broke, I never in a thousand years thought that I could confess this…untold tragedy to anyone. The full day’s events were a secret that I had vowed to take to my grave, but at this point, what
“Where am I?” I asked, my voice sounding groggy or was it lazy? All I was certain of is that my body felt weak and I, myself, felt weary. -Why, why was I throw into the past? Why do I keep coming back as Vivanna?- “Wow, you don’t even want to know who I am?” I was in the same dress that I had gone to the ball in, only barefoot. I made myself more comfortable by sitting cross-legged on the ground. I stared down at the floor once more, or rather the cosmos then sighed. Even if I were to search for clues…this situation is way beyond my control, and frankly…I am tired. More than just physical exhaustion, I think I have just had enough. “Neiwei? Is he alright?” I asked, and the man frowned. In fluid movements, probably because his legs had turned to inky smoke, he flowed to me, then with his sharp claws oozing his essence, he tilted my chin. “Ah… I see you had erased all the bad things that the goddess made you relive?” -The goddess
“What's this? A peace offering?” I asked, frowning at the cheap trinket she offered “No, you idiot, this is a birthday gift from me.” “I mean, I prefer money, but….” I said, then reached for the trinket. As soon as my hand touched the object she held, her pink eye turned golden, and as though that wasn’t bad enough, it began glowing. A chill crept up my spine, forcing me to still in my spot. The sounds that often framed nightfall were silenced, and even the air’s stillness could be felt. -The hell is going on? I can’t…move my body? - “Isn't it about time you wake up?” Milossa spoke in a voice that did not even sound like her own. Her lips were moving, yes, but they did not match her words. “Vivanna, or should I call you Annabelle?” the voice said, “You know of the tragedies that will befall you next. Last time your emotions were deeply disturbed, you had many people around you whose energies you could absorb, but right
“So…what? Do you want to take me out or something?” I joked.Well, my version of a joke anyway. The sound of the flickering of a lighter caused me to turn and face Monet, who already had a lit cigarette placed firmly on her lips.“Are you allowed to do that?”“Maybe not, but does it look like it changes anything?”“I never pegged you for the pessimistic type.”“Hmm…” she replied, then exhaled. The smoke pooling from her mouth framed her face, obscuring her dejected expression for only a few seconds.“I am dying, Annabelle.”“No shit, though I have to admit, this is the first time I am seeing a person die because of a disease.”“That’s rather cold-blooded, you brat!” she chuckled, then continued, “But, unfortunately for you, I am not ill, so I guess your goal has yet to be achieved?. I was poiso
