Maxwell walked over to the door.

When he saw Rachel, his expression turned into one of guilt.

Rachel stared at him. He had clearly just woken up as well.

Had the two of them slept together the night before?

No wonder he hadn't gone over to her place last night. That wench, Jennifer, had stopped him.

Covering up her negative thoughts, Rachel exclaimed, "Max! What happened? Why are there so many rashes on your arms and neck?"

Tears began running down her face. "No wonder you weren't picking up your phone last night. You were sick, weren't you? Why didn't you tell me, Max? Thank goodness I came, or I wouldn't have known!"

Maxwell thought she was making too much of a fuss out of this. "I'm fine. It was just an allergic reaction."

"An allergic reaction?" Rachel said. "You're only allergic to peppers, so I've always avoided putting peppers in your food. Did you not know that, Ms. Yale?"

Jennifer stood at the side, feeling like a stranger in her own home.

Jennifer blocked her way and made no move to let her into the house. She knew that Rachel wasn't just here to pack clothes for Maxwell. She was here to gloat."Get out of my way!" Rachel snapped. "Ms. Yale, you won't be staying here for much longer either. Sooner or later, this house will belong to me and Max. You have no right to stop me from entering!"Jennifer resisted the urge to slap her.All of a sudden, she felt exhausted. She didn't want to continue fighting for a man who would never belong to her.She could barely fight for herself. If she had to lose, then so be it.Love was a luxury to her.She moved aside and cleared a space for Rachel to enter.Suddenly, a hand grabbed Rachel by the shoulder and pulled her back. Before she could do anything, someone slapped her hard."Laurie?" Jennifer realized that things had escalated too far immediately. "Laurie, stop it. You're going to get in trouble."Laura still retained her rationality. She had just wanted to teach Rachel a lesson; with that done, she flung Rachel toward the driveway. "Get lost!" She pointed a threatening finger at Rachel. "If I see you harassing Jennifer here, I'll beat you up again!"After Rachel left, Jennifer clutched at her chest. "You scared me, Laurie.""That's nothing." Laura pounded on her chest. "If my future husband ever cheats on me, I'll make sure the bitch regrets being born!"Jennifer laughed as well. "That was rather vindictive, to tell you the truth. If I knew this would happen to me, I would've taken martial arts classes when I was young as well!"As she spoke, she went into the kitchen and got Laura a glass of water. After fighting and sweating so much earlier, she must be thirsty."Why are you here so early, Laurie?" she asked curiously."Sorry, Jennifer," Laura said glo

Jennifer ran over immediately. "Sir, there's a misunderstanding here. Please don't arrest her. We'll pay for all damages, or if she wants to sue, we can hire a lawyer.""That comes later," one of the policemen said coldly. "The victim has already reported the case. We have to follow the due process."With that, they left with Laura. Before she left, Laura gave Jennifer a forced smile. "Don't worry, Jennifer, I'll be fine. Oh, and don't tell my dad."If her father heard about this, he would give her yet another scolding. Even worse, he might offer Rachel money to settle this. She didn't want to give Rachel any money at all. After Laura was arrested, Jennifer panicked. However, it was late at night; Robert was definitely sleeping by now. She couldn't call him for help. The only person who could help her was Maxwell.Jennifer tried calling him, but he did not pick up his phone. She figured that he was probably taking care of Rachel, considering that she'd been hurt in the fight.

"Who said you could come here and spout nonsense, Jennifer Yale?" Maxwell said darkly. "Why are you announcing your status to everyone now? Are you trying to use public opinion against me?"Jennifer hadn't expected him to think of her that badly. She suddenly realized that he had fired the receptionist not because he was standing up for her, but because he needed to shut everyone up. It was a subtle threat. She felt cold all over.Maxwell was a ruthless man. She would never understand what was going through his mind."I just hope you can let Laura off lightly. I didn't want to announce our relationship either," Jennifer said meekly. "Laura only did it because of me. She's hot-tempered."Maxwell turned suddenly and stalked over to her. "Do you know how badly you hurt Rach?" he roared. "She's a dancer. You dislocated her arm. This is going to be detrimental to her career! You hate Rachel, don't you, Jennifer Yale? You told Laura to beat her up!"Jennifer almost cried in grievance.

However, Michael still preferred Jennifer to be his boss' wife when he compared the two women. After all, Rachel was a hypocrite who only pretended to be kind when Maxwell was around. If Maxwell wasn't there, she showed her true colors and bossed everyone around. At the end of the day, Rachel was merely a mistress whom Maxwell kept on the side. Michael had grown tired of her antics in trying to act as the lady boss! Thus, Michael decided to go along with the flow and help Jennifer out this time. …Jennifer searched through several hospitals in Haven City with well-known orthopedic departments. Finally, she found Rachel at a private orthopedic hospital. Maxwell had chosen the best VIP ward with a beautiful view overlooking a lake for Rachel. The ward was equipped with the best facilities as well. Moreover, he employed six caretakers to stay inside the ward and wait on Rachel hand and foot. Jennifer couldn't help feeling bitter when she saw the scene before her. Clearly, Rache

Rachel gritted her teeth and said, "Then, just wait for Laura to be prosecuted! Even if she gets released eventually, she will still have a criminal record with the police. This record will follow her for the rest of her life, becoming a blemish that will haunt her forever!" Jennifer's heart sank. Laura ended up in this situation because she was trying to help her. At this point in time, did she have any other choice? Finally, Jennifer conceded to Rachel's demands so that she could get Laura out of the police station as soon as possible. "How can I trust you?" Jennifer looked at her suspiciously. "What if you back out and refuse to release Laura after I divorce Maxwell and admit to causing your grandmother's death? I would have to suffer a double whammy!" Rachel snorted and gave Jennifer a sidelong glance. "Jennifer, do you think you still have a choice? I'm giving you an opportunity, not negotiating with you! You better be clear about that!" Jennifer knew that even if danger

Maxwell sensed something off about Jennifer. His heart quivered as he pressed further, "What's wrong with you? Tell me!" Jennifer took a deep breath and held back her tears. "I promise, you won't regret coming back this time." After his call with Jennifer ended, Maxwell stared at the darkened phone screen in confusion. Rachel was right beside him, lying injured on the hospital bed. However, Jennifer's voice on the phone just now was clearly off. Maxwell didn't want to admit that he felt concerned. Nonetheless, his heart was gripped with worry. He wanted to return home and see what was going on. Rachel guessed that the call was from Jennifer. After all, she would want to get the divorce done as soon as possible for the sake of getting Laura out. She was almost certain that Jennifer called Maxwell home to talk about their divorce. Rachel pretended to be understanding and said, "Maxwell, is that your wife? Did she ask you to go home?"When Maxwell remembered the grievances th

"Jennifer?" Maxwell was startled and quickly stood up. He gathered her into his arms and rushed to the bedroom. After he placed her on the bed, Jennifer still hadn't regained consciousness. "Jennifer, stop the act and get up!" Maxwell snapped as he stood beside her. "One moment you're sobbing, the next you're trying to gain my sympathy. Tell me, how many tricks do you have up your sleeve?" Unfortunately, there was no response. Maxwell reached out and touched her forehead. It was scalding hot. Was Jennifer running a fever?Maxwell took out his phone and made a call to his private doctor, Derek Spellman. While waiting for Derek, he went to the bathroom and fetched a basin of cold water. He intended to use a towel to cool her down. Coincidentally, Maxwell caught sight of her damp clothes in a basin beside the sink. These were the clothes Jennifer wore when she came to see him this morning. So, did she walk back in the rain today? "Damn it," Maxwell cursed under his breath

Laura bit her lip. She knew Simon was a master at humiliation. He never needed to use crude words to hit where it hurt the most. She retorted, "Mr. Fowler isn't like a certain someone who takes advantage of others! He's the most upright lawyer I've ever met"Although she appeared to be opposing him, Simon wasn't as angry as before. He must have realized that someone with Laura's personality probably wouldn't be won over by a few bouquets of flowers. He smirked. "Well then, I wish you all the best in rescuing your father!"Laura smiled. "Don't worry, my father's case is progressing smoothly!" After finishing the dishes, Laura let out a long sigh of relief. "Now, can I finally leave?" Simon glanced at the time. It was nearly midnight, and the dark sky outside made even him feel uneasy. He tossed her his car keys. "Take my car. Let me know once you're home." Laura took the keys, her confusion and surprise evident. Simon cleared his throat. "Don't overthink it. I'm just

Laura lied, "No, my friend lives there." Lionel already had a good idea of the truth but pretended not to know. He dropped her off at the destination."Thank you, Mr. Fowler. I'll leave my father's case in your hands," Laura said before stepping out of the car. Lionel stared at her retreating figure thoughtfully. Then, he pulled out his phone and texted Simon: "I've safely dropped Ms. Scott off. Shouldn't you thank me, Mr. Moore?"…In the living room, Simon's gaze darkened at the provocative message. Not long after, Laura returned, carrying a bouquet of white roses. When Simon saw the flowers in her hands, his expression hardened.Laura didn't think much of it. She set the bouquet aside and changed into her slippers. "Have you had dinner yet? I'll go and prepare the clothes you need for tomorrow if you've already eaten." "No," Simon spoke coldly from the couch. "I'm paying you 50 thousand dollars a month. So, hurry up and cook!" Laura took a deep breath and force

By the time Laura arrived at the restaurant, Lionel was already there. Like Simon, Lionel was dressed in a suit. However, Laura thought he lacked Simon's charm."Sorry, Mr. Fowler. I was stuck in traffic," Laura apologized. "Have you been waiting long?" Lionel smiled. "I just got here."Then, he brought out a bouquet of white roses from behind him. "This is for you." Laura was stunned, staring at him without reaching out to take them. Sensing her hesitation, Lionel quickly explained, "I passed by a flower shop earlier and noticed how beautiful these roses were. They reminded me of you, so I bought them. Do you not like them, Ms. Scott?" Laura reluctantly accepted the flowers and awkwardly thanked him. She was confused. Her relationship with Lionel was purely professional. So, why would he suddenly give her flowers? Lionel handed her the menu. "Please order something." "Oh, Laurie, you're truly the star of our news department!" The editor-in-chief immediately instructed the team to publish the interview and clapped his hands. "This is great! The collapsed bridge caused many casualties, so the public is concerned about the individual responsible for the construction. It's all thanks to you that we got some insider information from Mr. Moore! Don't worry, I'll make sure to highlight your contributions to the higher-ups by the end of the month." Laura waved it off. "I don't care if you give me credit. But you did say before that the bonus would be doubled, right?"The chief nodded. "Not just double, I'll triple it this time!" Laura blushed instantly. She quickly corrected herself. "I… I know you and I are worlds apart. I'd never dare to think of becoming your wife. Only Ms. Brooks is worthy of that. Me? Simon knew Laura was a master of playing innocent. Maybe she was even secretly cursing him in her mind right now. Yet she stubbornly held the cherry near his mouth. She pouted. "My hand is getting sore, Mr. Moore." Simon finally let out an amused laugh. "Your hand is sore from just this? What else can I even count on you for?"Laura blushed as memories of their past flashed through her mind. She stood up abruptly, deciding not to keep trying to appease him. Just as she was about to turn away, Simon suddenly grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his arms. Laura's heart raced as she sat stiffly in his lap, not daring to push him away. Simon murmured, "Weren't you just trying to feed me fruit?"Laura's face flushed a deep red as she shakily held the cherry up to his lips. This time, Simon ate it but immediately frowned. "It's sour." Laura weakly responded, "I tried one earlier, and it was sweet." In the next moment, Simon cupped the back of her head, and the swee

For some reason, Laura beamed at the realization. After sending the housekeeper away, she headed to the kitchen to start cooking. In the past, Laura had never cooked a meal in her life since she was born with a silver spoon. But after being with Simon, he demanded she prepare his outfits and cook the dishes he liked. Please don't make things difficult for us. Perhaps it's best if you go back." Laura wished the ground would swallow her whole. To the receptionist, she probably appeared as nothing more than a shameless, clingy woman who refused to let go. Just then, her editor-in-chief sent her a message. "Laura, you have to succeed this time!" She sighed. She might lose her job if she failed this time. After all, an exclusive interview could draw in readers, and more readers meant more revenue.
