Arthur woke up to a radio playing in the living room and breakfast smell reeking from the kitchen. It was Saturday and he had slept in a little late.
He got freshened up and made his way out of the bedroom.
“Dad!” screamed his little girl, dropping the puzzle pieces she was holding onto.
“Good morning, baby,” he cooed and kissed her cheeks.
“Do you have to work today?” asked his wife, Emily, from the kitchen.
“No!” He replied while making curls in his daughter’s hair.
Arthur Perry is the managing director of his father’s construction company. He is soon to be CEO. He is smart, talented, handsome, and respectful. He has a beautiful wife, Emily Watt, and a lovely daughter, Amity Perry. He has the perfect family. Or that is what his father defined as perfect for him.
Arthur was a hard worker as an employee. He started working at his father's company from the base and worked hard all the way up.
The little girl turned to her father, after hearing him say he doesn’t have to work today. That was something she always looked forward to. Don’t get it wrong, Arthur did spend time with his family. But here and there, he would have to skip some weekends and bury himself in the office work.
Her eyes blinked rapidly and with excitement, she asked, “Will you be mine today?”
“I’m always yours, sweetie,” he said.
“Liar,” she mumbled.
Arthur knew Amity doesn’t like it when her father had to work on the weekends. But he couldn’t help it. He had to put in some extra efforts to work and also keep a healthy relationship with the board members. He was aiming to take over as the next CEO, after his father. Becoming the CEO of one of the biggest construction companies in the country comes with a price. He had a few competitors to overthrow and take the seat, which his father has been pressuring him since he was in the university.
“Amity, don’t talk like that to your father,” Emily said, settling the breakfast on the dining table
“That’s okay, Emily. Let her tell me how she feels,” he spoke to his wife.
“You spoil her too much, Arthur.”
“She is our little princess and we can spoil her how much ever we want,” he said, lightly pinching his daughter’s cheeks. Amity is like a cute little teddy bear. Often Arthur cuddled to her saying my squishy, which she loved hearing from her Dad.
Emily is a stay at home mom. She used to work as an accountant prior to having Amity. She was happy and content to stay at home and take care of her daughter. When Arthur had brought it up to her when she was still in her first trimester, she had agreed without making any comeback.
Emily and Arthur share a wonderful relationship. Despite being in an arranged marriage, they were compatible and respected one another. Except for when he takes his daughter’s side.
Emily sighed and called them for breakfast. She was tired of telling her husband not to spoil their daughter too much. It’s not like she doesn’t like her daughter. She loves Amity with her everything. But no one could beat Arthur's love for Amity. She is like his oxygen. And he cannot go a day without seeing his daughter.
“Mommy, are we still going to the aquarium today?” Amity asked, taking a bite of the bacon.
Emily looked up from her plate and turned to Arthur. He gave a nod which translated to I’m in.
“Yes, sweetheart. We are going to the aquarium in the evening. And we can have dinner outside too.”
“Ice cream?” Amity demanded and looked at her parents expecting a yes. She knew her dad would never say no to her. He would get her favorite snacks behind Emily’s back when the mother-daughter has their light fight how Amity doesn’t go to bed early and she demands expensive things from her father.
“Yes, Amy,” Arthur replied, avoiding his wife’s eyes.
He loved these two women. He couldn’t hurt either of them. So he tried to balance by making up to each of them, separately.
“Yay!!!” Amity squealed.
Emily shook her head in disbelief. She could never stop Arthur from spoiling their daughter.
After having breakfast, Arthur offered to help his wife by doing the dishes. She allowed him to do it and relaxed on the couch with some tea.
Amity walked to her father and asked, “Can I help you?”
“Oh! Will you?”
“Yeah! But…” she trailed off, smiling wickedly at her father.
“What but?” he asked, curiously.
“You will have to pay me for that,” she said, folding her hands.
“How much would that be?”
“$5.”
“That’s a lot, Amy,” he tried to reason. He had no idea where she had learned it from but was curious to know. It was definitely not Emily, because his wife would have informed him about this progress of their daughter.
“You don’t get anything for free, Dad!”
“Who said that?” he asked. By now, he had forgotten about the dishes in his hand and only concentrated on his daughter.
“I saw in the TV. In one show, they said Nothing is free on this earth. We have to work for it and get money.”
“Well, that is true. But not for our own house chores.”
Amity looked at her father with a complex expression. She didn’t understand what he said.
Arthur tried to explain it to her, “Now see sweetie, Mommy does all the work at home right?”
Amity nodded her head.
“She does so much work for you and me, like cleaning our rooms, washing our clothes and cooking for us. Right?”
Amity nodded her head, again.
“And do we pay to her?” he asked.
Amity shook her head.
“Do you know why she does that for us?”
Amity shook her head, again.
“Ask her yourself,” he said.
Amity turned to her mother, who was already looking their way.
“Why Mommy?”
“Because I love you both, Sweetheart,” Emily replied, smiling.
Amity turned to Arthur and blinked her eyes.
“You got it now?” he asked, unsure if she really understood. But his daughter said Yes.
“So, we don’t take money to do chores for our loved ones. You get that?” he asked.
“Yes!” Amity said, smiling at him.
“You can get pocket money from us when you grow up a little more. You can get paid only when you do something out of the ordinary and that if you are asked by us. Okay?”
“Okay!” Amity got to help her father to wipe the dishes which he brushed and rinsed.
Emily watched them silently. She was just grateful to heavens for giving her a loving family. And Arthur as her husband and Amity as their little girl. She didn’t want anything other than this even if she was offered better.
The party was crowded by all the elite status people of the country. Ethan had not expected anything less from Vanessa’s parents. They were born rich people. Thanks to their ancestors, the last three generation kids were born and brought equal to the royals.Ethan entered the party with a huge sigh. He enjoyed partying, just not with old men. Ethan was well dressed in a black suit, which is not his ideal wear for a party. He was greeted by a few businessmen as soon as he entered the party. He returned the greetings with utmost politeness. He walked around the place for a few moments, trying to spot any well-known face. That was when he noticed Liza in the back, she was talking with some ladies.
“So this is the plan we have come up with for the construction of the museum.” The employee turned towards the board members after he completed the presentation. It was a very important construction for the government and the SkyLine infrastructures were bidding for it. They weren’t ready to lose this bid. They had a big name in the construction field and were never ready to lose to anyone, although having disputes within the board members for the next CEO.The old men in the meeting were convinced
After the party, Ethan had dropped off Liza to her home and headed towards his place. He lived alone in a high end penthouse in the center of the city.He quickly changed his clothes and got fresh. And settled in front of his laptop. He opened his personal email, he hadn’t checked it in a while and there was one heck of emails for him from friends and extended family. One email caught his attention. It was from an old friend from college, Jake. Jake McCarthy. They w
Arthur was in his office at home after they reached home and he got changed into sweatpants and a loose t-shirt.He had helped Emily to tuck in Amity to bed. His little girl had fallen asleep in her car seat on the way to home. Who to be blamed, when she tired herself from running around her grandparents’ place and talk so much!He had some office files to look at. He had his desktop on and browsed through his not so active social media and checked emails. Then the name caught his eyes. Jake McCarthy.
Ethan wasn’t on the best of terms with Vanessa yet. But it wasn’t worst either. After the lunch with her at her place, he had maintained a fair distance from her only so he wouldn’t discomfort her in any way.Ethan was still in his deep slumber when his phone rang loud. It made him groan. Waking up to someone’s phone call wasn’t an ideal morning for him. Except for his mother’s phone call. He hoped it to be his mom or else there was going to be some kind of attitude in his voice. He rolled over to the other side of the bed and grabbed his phone.
After dinner last night, Ethan had crashed at his parents’ place. It’s not like he had to worry about clothes and stuff. It was the heavy traffic in the city that worried him. Driving on his own was a bad idea. He wouldn’t even be able to sit freely and do his stuff. He should have his eyes and hands and legs working along the way back home or to the studio. He drove into the city and passed the bridge and drove through a busy long street, but he felt like the route to his office had got farther. He checked his phone to see if he had any phone calls or messages. But to increase driving boredom, his phone was dead.
Arthur sighed, leaning onto the couch.“Amy, we are going shopping not new York fashion week,” he screamed loudly. His daughter has been taking more than an hour to pick clothes to wear to go for shopping. She wanted to buy a new dress for the wedding. She wanted to look prettier than the bride. And Arthur had accidentally become her chauffeur and assistant for the day, to shop and pack her things for the weekend wedding. And his daughter was driving him crazy even before the shopping began.
The flight to Bonnet Island Estate was still 50 minutes away from taking off. Arthur and his little family were in the waiting lounge for the first class passengers.Emily was seated on the couch, having a cup of coffee, and reading a magazine. Arthur was right next to her, with Amity sleeping, leaning onto his chest. The little princess had dozed off to sleep as soon as she was showered and dressed. Her parents realized that early morning flights are definitely not her thing.
EpilogueArthur opened his eyes and smiled brightly while looking at the mesmerizing decorations and arrangements in front of him. The flower arrangements at the gazebo stood out the most. And the most authentic and the wow factor was the sign at the entrance of the venue. Mr & Mr.Arthur chuckled reading the words on the tag Duke was wearing. “Dad+Dad are getting married”. Duke was Arthur and Ethan’s dog, he is a golden retriever breed and Ethan had got Duke for Arthur a few days after their reunion.
“We should divorce Arthur,” Emily said.Arthur looked at her with a blank expression. He had no idea what to reply to that. He knew he has to divorce Emily if he wants to pursue a relationship with Ethan but the words coming from Emily had his tongue tied.“We should really get a divorce, Arthur. You don’t love me-“He cut her words short, “I love you Emily. Just not the way you want me to,” he moved forward and got on his kn
A loud slap echoed inside the big mansion. Arthur’s mother, Rosa got to her feet and walked towards her husband’s study room. She did feel strange to see her son, Arthur at home early in the morning. But she had simply brushed it off without giving it much thought. But she was beyond curious to know why her son came home first thing in the morning. He had returned from vacation yesterday night. And the tight slap sound that resounded from her husband’s study room gave more reason for her to get nervous. She unlocked the door and entered the study room without knocking. There stood her son with a bright red mark on his cheek and her husband who was fuming with anger.
Arthur’s eyes grew wider and his heart began beating faster with passing second. He simply could not digest the information that Liam just gave away.“Wait a second. How do you know Ethan?” Arthur asked with doubt. He did not want to consider that his friend tailed him and could not rule out the possibility too. Since he knew Liam too well.“How else? I had my personal investigator dig your past,” Liam said casually. As if it was nothing of a big deal.
Liam Garcia’s flight landed at New York international airport. He had flown down here in a hurry to meet Arthur. He got off the plane as soon the plane touched the tarmac. He did not have much time and he had to meet Arthur immediately. Now, thinking about Arthur, Liam pulled out his phone and dialed Arthur’s number for the nth time. But that guy was busy vacationing with his wife and daughter and his lover Ethan. What a combination!! He thought.“Damn it!!” Liam disconnected the phone call when the call went to voicemail. Arthur has not received a single phone call from him since yesterday evening and that had scared the shit out of Liam.
Vanessa walked inside the Mixture. She did not have any work at the studio but she stopped by to meet Ethan and Liza. He had informed her of Arthur and his little family’s arrival. She could not control her curiosity. She wanted to see the guy who had made Ethan fall in love with him. So, here she was first thing in the morning. She enters Ethan’s office. There, she finds a little girl sitting on Ethan’s chair. She was writing something on a paper, leaning down onto the desk. When the office door opens, the little girl looks at Vanessa.“Yes?”
“Excuse me, I am here to meet Arthur Perry,” Ethan said to Arthur’s secretary. She looked at the handsome man in front of her and smiled brightly, “Sir, do you have an appointment?”Ethan replied, “Ah... Actually no. I was in the city and wanted to drop by and give a surprise to him,”“Oh, are you boss’ friend?” She asked wondering if she should just let him in.
Liam slumped down on his chair. He was at his office and his personal investigator was sitting in front of him. He was early to work today. He looked at the photos that were spread on his desk. Photos of Arthur and Ethan. The photos ranged from Arthur’s college days to his recent meet up with Ethan at Jake’s wedding.“So... You are telling me that Arthur Perry is a gay man?” Liam asked his personal investigator for the nth time. He could not believe his eyes. Never in his wildest dreams did he think that Arthur was gay. But why did he even marry Emily and had a child with her if he does not like women? Was it his father’s pressure? He was aware of what happened with Arthur’s cousin Ashley when sh
PRESENT DAY“So, that is how my love story came to an end,” Ethan concluded his story with a huge sigh. Vanessa and Liza who were listening to his story, came, and sat next to him, and hugged him tightly.“Liar,” Vanessa mumbled. Liza and Ethan gave her a confused look.“You just said your love story came to an end. It seems like it was on pause for some years. You are continuing now,” she pouted, making Ethan and
