Abel wiped his hands with the napkin and looked at her. “He’s my elder, not yours.”

Ruth’s eyes widened. “What are you saying? Are you drawing a distinction between us?”

“You’ve always been smart. Can you really not tell what I’m trying to say? My parents are good to you, so you should acknowledge them as part of our family. My grandfather doesn’t, so you shouldn’t acknowledge him. He hasn’t played the role of an elder properly to you, so why should he get your respect?”

His words struck a chord with Ruth.

If Abel had not said it, Ruth would have never known just how logical her husband was. He did not judge her actions without seeing the whole picture.

“If my grandfather hits me or yells at me for no reason, I have to accept it. But you were angry for my sake. That shows that you care about me. How can I say that you disrespect your elders when you did it out of concern for me? I would be ungrateful if I did that.”

“You’re right!” Ruth nodded, but then suddenly started shaking
