Liam knew that Markus was teasing him to try and break the tension, so he didn't pretend to be angry or argue with him as he usually would have done.

Liam only smiled, his expression brightening. "Before moving to Riverwood, I stayed in my mother's hometown.

"I didn't make much back then, but my profession was quite respected. Back in the day, we always had some money left over when I lived with her.

"She cooked very well, but I was so busy that I didn't always have time for meals. Every day, she tried to think up ideas or change her recipes so that I would remember to eat. She would bring the food to the hospital and watch me finish eating it.

"We were always busy during the holidays. Back then, there were always people being sent to the hospital because of accidents or overdrinking. There were all sorts of cases."

Liam continued, "There weren't that many doctors back then, so I would be busy all night. Ever since I started working, I never got to have a meal with her on holiday
