The Celes family had already heard of the prophecy long ago. This was told to Maryn Celes when she was summoned by Frey. That one unfavorable day for Maryn, but the most fortunate day for that pure human girl. Not too long ago when the Celes pack was still with the Willows pack, Maryn was out and about on the shores of Yord picking up shells for a homemade mobile she’s making for her child Cora. The breeze coming from the ocean felt amazing on her skin, the warmth of the sand under her feet that contrasted the wind was the perfect weather, and the sound of the waves splashing one over the other. She was at her happiest state until she saw a body lying on the ground. She rushed to it, her maternal instincts were strong, she still felt the young girl’s pulse. ‘She’s still alive’ she whispers to herself, not thinking about what the law was, she carried the girl on her back careful enough not to let the shells spill out from her bag.
Thazar Celes is a hard-working family man, he was chopping wood from the backside of the house. From afar he hears his wife breathing hard, he looks to his left to see his wife walking in a hunched position. Immediately he places the ax on the side and rushed to her, seeing the girl on her back made him a little hesitant but continued to go to her. He knew his wife needed him and whatever it is, he shall be with her; a vow he made as her forever mate.
“Let me take her from you” Maryn leans to her side to let Thazar take the girl from her, “where’d you find her?” He grunts as he heaves the girl higher in his arms.
“I found her on the beach, she’s got a weak pulse and I don’t think she’s from here.” They hurriedly walk into their home, placing the girl on their couch. Thazar goes to get the first aid his wife made. Maryn looks at the girl and takes in every detail; a large wound slashed on her stomach but not deep enough to kill her, bruises covering her arms and legs, and some patches of old burns on her hands. She looks past her scars and sees how beautiful the girl is. Her hair was red as the roses, her skin was rough like layers of callouses were made to protect her, and her clothes we almost like theirs; jeans and a t-shirt that says “Sunshine Gardens Bakery.”“What happened to you?” Maryn whispers. Her eyes slowly get flooded with tears as she feels the pain that the girl went through. Touching the girl’s wounds mirrored on her body, a power she felt cursed to have yet blessed to use. The girl was not any of their kind, she’s a pure human as she suspected. The weight of her disobedience started to descend on her, shallow breaths take over, and small tremors on her hands. Suddenly a hand grabs her shoulder followed by arms wrapped around her.“Honey, it’s going to be okay. She’ll be okay and us too.” Maryn closes her eyes and embraces her mate back. She pulls herself together and takes the first aid Thazar brought to her. They patch up the wounds of the girl along with an ointment they created to make wounds heal faster as if it was never there. They move the girl to the guest room hiding her from the Willows. Staring at the girl from the doorway they both feel as if she was one of theirs but knowing the land’s law they had a decision to make; to keep her alive or surrender her to Frey.Closing the guest room door, moving to their bedroom they speak in hushed voices.
“They cannot know about this. The kids can know about her, but we have to keep the Willows safe.” Her eyes glow yellow as her emotions overwhelm her. “Alright, I’ll do something about the Willows and you handle the kids, okay?” rubbing her arms up and down hoping to relieve some tension. She nods and smiles knowing this is how her husband comforts her emotionally and physically.“What do we do when she wakes up? What do we tell her?” he asks.“When she wakes up we’ll make sure she’s okay and won’t do anything to us.”“Okay, we’ll tell the kids at dinner. Let’s hope they don’t cause such a ruckus” he chuckles. She smiles knowing her children would freak out. Her eldest Enoch would definitely be curious but cautious, her second eldest is going to freak out and scream. The middle child Cora would stare at the girl and most likely ask if she could teach her anything from the pure human realm, the second to the youngest son Larkin would absolutely make her answer all his questions and her youngest Emilio would not care at all.“Good luck to us” she chuckles as they both prepare to make dinner for their family and tell them news that would change their lives.“Kids! Back to human forms and come to dinner!” Thazar shouts from the backyard door. His kids love turning into their wolf forms, sometimes to practice fights but mostly to bully each other without physical repercussions. Wolves heal fast, they’re stronger and faster than the other creatures in Yord. Having these benefits doesn’t guarantee them to be the most powerful creatures there, after all, Frey and his siblings exist.
One after the other they turn back into their human forms, running to their rooms getting cleaned up before their meal. As soon as the table was set and they were all seated in their cozy cabin home Maryn begins the meal with small words of gratitude and began to dig in their food. Warm mashed potatoes, a bowl of salad, a hot plate of roasted chicken, and their all-time favorite banana bread. Gobbling up their food, laughing loudly at the experiments Larkin made Emilio do with glass, the sun, and burning a whole pile of leaves that made all of them run and get water.
“There weren’t any buckets left!” Larkin shouts.
“So what did you do? C’mon tell then what you did” Salma says in between laughs.“I changed into my wolf form, drank the water, and ran back to the fire and blew some of it out.”“And then?” Cora tries to keep her laugh but fails immeasurably.“And then boogers came along with it!” Larkin hysterically laughs. Maryn and Thazar chuckle to their amusement. How nice it must be to keep this happy energy in the family. An ache starts to form in Maryn’s chest, she doesn’t want to lose all this, because she helped a pure human. Thazar holds and caresses her hand with his thumb, signaling her it’s time to tell them what has happened.“Kids” her voice deep and solemn alerts all of them. Heads turn facing her, as she looks back at them.
“I have something to tell you. Now before you all can react I’d like you to understand what I did and why I did it.” Eyebrows furrow trying to guess what their mother had done. She takes a deep breath, looks down, and continues.“I helped a young girl I found lying on the beach today.” She looks up, looking at her children’s expecting faces.“I brought her home to treat her. She’s in the guest bedroom-” she was interrupted by her eldest son whose eyes got a big feeling his home got invaded.“Why!?”“Please Enoch, let your mother finish speaking” Thazar scowls.“Sorry, dad. Sorry mum” he apologetically says.“The young girl in our home is a pure human. I respectfully ask all of you to give the girl time and space. Do not do anything reckless around her, alright?”All her kids started speaking one over the other, questioning their mother’s actions.“Ma are you serious?”“Bringing a pure human home?!”“Pure humans are real? I thought they were myths!”“Can we see her? Can we?”“Everyone calm down, when she wakes up, we’ll ask her. But for now, the girl is sleeping. I ask all of you to not disturb her until she wakes up.” Thazar’s low authoritative voice settles in the minds of his children. He trusts his children as much as he trusts his wife. To him, nothing will ever come first than family.“Dad?” Salma’s small voice breaks the silence.
“Yes?”“What about the law? It’s said that when we help pure humans we’ll be punished.”“Yeah, what’s gonna happen to us?” Cora adds. From curiosity to being worried about their future, a grim feeling settles in their consciousness.“We’ll figure it all out tomorrow, just think about all the new things she could teach us!” Maryn says as she tries to liven up the mood of her family, suddenly smiles creep on their faces. Mischievous plans start to conjure in their fascinated minds. Her husband and children are her everything, if any punishment must come her and her family’s way she’ll make sure that they will be untouched.“Shh, don’t be so loud.”“Don’t push me!”“I wasn’t pushing you!”“I think she’s waking up.”“That’s because you’re so loud.” “Her eyes are opening! Look, look!”The young girl’s eyes flutter open still feeling all the aches on her body. She sees that she’s surrounded by what she thinks are 3 kids and 2 teens. A cabin-styled room with horizontal log features. Her bed sitting in the middle with the headboard against the wall, a bedside drawer on each side of the bed, a wooden table on the corner with a matching chair by the window, and another door on her left which she guesses is a bathroom. She tries to sit up from the bed angling herself to see them better. She holds her body weight on her elbows and rests her back on the headboard of the bed. Rubbing her eyes, feeling the clotted blood on her forehead scars, she focuses her sight on the kids that surround her. “Um, hello,” she says, voice weak but audible. Salma points at the glass of water she brought for her, letting her know
Long ago, the gods of the planet Earth lived among the people living on her. They lived in harmony, even helping in the transition of humankind from simplicity to industry. The people loved them as well, they worshiped them so much to even build them altars and shrines to show their utmost respect. In this harmony did the gods intertwined their beings with the people. In that affiance, they created creatures that are different from the rest of the people that originally lived on Earth. The god of the sea created merpeople when he wedded his beloved human, the god of the sky created the fae and more. One of the gods that lived among the people was Frey. Frey was one of the gods that coupled with the people but refused to share his gifts with his creatures. Frey was never the kind to copulate with lowly creatures. He was cold, acerbic, and oozed authority. He wasn’t the most powerful god among them however he was the most frightening one when he used his power. In contrast to
A loud clang of a single bell ruptures Maryn awake, her heart beats fast and nervous, a low and deep ache thumps her chest unknowingly getting up from bed and walking away from her bedroom. Thazar stirs and feels his bedside empty of his wife. He gets up and follows his wife in a hurry, he reaches for her shoulder as she stood motionless at the front door. “My love?” he asks with a warry voice. She turns her head, eyes wide open with shining beams of light coming from them, her tears freely falling from her face and a widespread of worry on it. She tries to speak, a stutter forms from her lips, and in a weak whisper like a mouse’s squeak she says, “Help me”.Thazar is taken aback that his wife is possessed by one of the gods. He stood speechless, worried, and heartbroken watching his wife fight the god that has taken her body. He nods as she returns to face the door to open it. He covers her shoulders with a random jacket he found on the sofa, most likely one of their kids
A couple of decades have passed since Maryn Celes was taken by Mani. The Celes family since then cut ties with the Willows pack and moved far away from them as possible. Living normally again was hard, especially on Thazar. Fortunately, Enoch and Salma were heaven-sent as they helped with everything in the house, but that never stopped him from being the father that they needed. He provided what they all needed despite getting tired easily. His favorite part of raising them is teaching them to be vocal about everything, like their needs, emotions, and state of mind. He learned from Maryn that if he couldn’t feel what their children wanted, he must learn to be the safe space for them to talk to. “Dad catch her!” Enoch shouts from the distance. Thazar turns and sees his granddaughter running and screaming refusing to clean all the mud she got on her clothes from training to turn into her wolf form. High pitched laughter rang around the forest followed by a frustrated father and mother
She looks around and there she sees a tall man a tiny bit north of her age. He looked rugged but handsome, wearing jeans and a loose black shirt, messy hair like he’s been pulling and shaking it, eyes glowing against the lights of the faes, and eyebrows furrowed with questions. “H-h-hello.” Faes saw the outsider and hid and the once beautiful lights turned into complete darkness. The only light illuminating their encounter was from the moon. Shivers chill down her back, ‘who is he? How did he find this place? Is he like me, too? ‘She slowly stands and positions her feet to run towards home but that would endanger her family. ‘What do I do?’ she thinks. He raises his arms, showing both palms to her. “I—I don’t mean any harm. I just saw these lights and followed them. I thought you were lost so I spoke up.” He continues to stay in the same position until she spoke. “You can put your hands down. I won’t hurt you either but please stay where you are and don’t come any closer.” He nods
Gideon finding the faes’ home at first was completely serendipitous, however, the following days after he trains he traces his steps and made his own pathway there. And every night that he gets a chance to visit the faes he sees her. Some nights she wasn’t there, some nights she was. Gideon wanted to know her more, not risking the chance that he misses her. A memory plays in his head as he walks through the path he made.“Leora, may I ask you something?” Gideon says while they played skip stones along the river. “What is it?” she replies standing up and carrying a new batch of stones to throw. He toys with the last stone in his hands preparing himself for her answer. “How would you feel if we met up every other night?” he throws the stone and it skips four times until it fell into the water. Nervous to see her face he took a deep breath and looked at her. She was again crouching down but still holding all the stones in her arms. She had the brightest smile like she won someth
Gideon stands abruptly in surprise while Leora lay still and unbothered on the ground. Gideon’s alert and in panic, first nature was to protect Leora but immediately realizes that Leora was still relaxed. He looks at her and back to the intruder. The girl that found them was beautiful, she had long wavy dark hair with glowing eyes, and lightly tanned skin, covered by a black turtle-neck shirt over two layers of jackets. One grey cotton with a hood under a denim blue jacket. Brown cargo pants with pockets full of what seemed to be snacks and two more flashlights. The girl reaches down and pulls out a biscuit from the left side pocket. As she reaches down Leora stands and hurriedly grabs the biscuit that the girl pulls out. “Mine,” Leora giggles as she gobbles it. Standing in confusion Gideon takes a step closer to the ladies and Leora pulls his hand to her side. “Gideon, this is my aunt Cora. Don’t worry. I told her about you.” Leora says as she squeezes his hand for comfort. It was o
Leora's blood drops, she releases her hold from his and takes a few steps away from him. "I—I can't do that." Leora says, her thoughts running rapidly in her mind. She starts pacing around him. The sound of leaves crunching beneath her feet, twigs breaking cover the silence as she tries to think of an excuse why she can't. Gideon opens his arms to her hoping she would walk into them for comfort, but her panic overwhelms her and he puts his arms down, approaches her and holds her hands in his."I know it's too soon, but if we really want this I want you to meet my pack." "I can't meet anyone outside my family." she whispers. "I shouldn't have..." she trails her eyes from his face down to the ground, shoulders shaking, eyes flooded by escaping tears."Leora, you're worrying me. What's going on?"Leora falls to her knees, tears gushing out, wails of sorrow fill her voice as her breaths were ragged in between. Gideon catches her by the elbows. They both settle on the ground as he waits
Gideon walks away from his home, from his family, from his beloved. He needed to think, think of how he should feel about the truth, think about how helpless the family of his mate thinks they are, think about how he could break the hex. He walks with his heart beating loud, it beats louder and louder as he changes form and runs until he reaches a beach on the other side of the island. He stands and screams at the beaming moon above him, the cool wind not helping him calm down nor did the sound of the waves. All he felt was frustration and defeat. ‘How could they think that just because a god says it will happen means it’s the only thing that will happen?’ he thinks to himself. More and more questions form in his head when he sees a sliver of light luring him a little further from the beach. The light moves in an S-like wave following the wind’s path. He stares at the light, cautious as he’s high with his emotions. A translucent shape of a woman beckons at him to follow. He squi
"Hey! It’s been a while!" Daniel pops from behind Oliviana. Enoch scowls at the unwelcome surprise. Gideon stands from his seat in shock with Leora holding him by the hand anchoring him. They both gave each other a look, 'not now,' her eyes say. The couple is confused about how their families know each other without them knowing. Thazar stands and welcomes them both. "Please come in. I'm well aware of why you've arrived." Enoch steps aside to let the pair enter the home. Oliviana has her eyes focused on her grandson while Daniel wanders his eyes around the home smiling in amazement. "It’s really been a while." His eyes land on Thazar, a strong man, but the years have been visibly kind to him. Smile lines wrinkle by his eyes and gray strands peek from his dark hair. "Good evening," the silence was broken by Oliviana's low voice. "I'm here for my grandson." Gideon grinds his teeth and makes the slightest snarl. He didn't want to leave. He had yet to learn about Leora's fate. In the ste
Gideon starts to climb out of the window, trusting Daniel would cover for him while he’s away, until he hears him shout at him. “Hey! Bathe, dude. You look like crap.” He nods and rushes to the bathroom. That makes sense. After all, he was on a mission to find out everything he needed to know, but from her pack. “Make a good impression.” Daniel echoes from the bedroom. He puts on his least ragged clothes; the closest he’s got that didn’t have more than three holes. He even combed his signature messy hair. Daniel watched his nephew fuss about in the room trying to look presentable to the pack of the girl he loves. It was amusing. Reminded him of his older brother, Idris, when he was cheering his brother on the side to talk to Hailey. It was refreshing to see the good side of history repeat itself, but he also couldn’t help but worry. Daniel knew about the family he was about to meet. The father of the girl his nephew was in love with used to be his friend, but since they
