CHAPTER 3: Marry a Monster.

Maria twirled around in her office chair, taking a puff of her cigar. Although my parents used to smoke, I hated the smell of cigarettes.

"Has she had something to eat?" She asked Grace.

"She wanted to see you first." Grace bowed.

Maria chuckled. "Okay. You may take your leave. Aria come seat." With that, Grace left us alone.

"Where are they?" I asked.

"I knew you would say this so I got you an answer." She made a call and a man with a projector came in.

"Play it." She took another puff.

My legs felt heavy as I followed Maria and the man to the other end of the office. What I saw ended me. My breath hitched, my eyes felt dry and itchy as they teared up.

I lost my stamina when I saw my family's body covered in blood. Men in black suits placed them together. My mother's white floral dress was completely red from blood, my father's head had several bullet holes in it, and my sister's face looked beaten up. The white tiles of our dining room was stained red. My sister's eyes were still open and a man shut them. I couldn't see the men's faces because they were masked. Another video played again and I saw our house explode. I saw it go down in flames. There was really a bomb in it.

"No! No! No!" I shut my eyes and fell to the floor. I could have actually died. I sobbed uncontrollably.

"Stop the video." Maria sighed.

"What did you do to them?" My body shook so violently, it seemed like it was over for me as well.

"Not me hunny. You have the wrong person." She took another puff. I felt a sharp pain in my head, I felt dizzy and nauseous. It was all too much to take in. "It's who? who did this to them?"

My lips parted. "Who? W-ho d-did this t-to them? I stuttered.

"Dante Di salvo." That was the last thing I heard before darkness engulfed me.

As my eyes flittered open, I thought it was all a dream. My head was still throbbing with pain and there was a drip standing next to me.

"You're awake." Grace smiled as if a wave of relief had washed through her. "Stay still." She immediately ran out of the room.

Di Salvo was all I could think of. I had heard that name several times before that day. He was important to my father. My eyes reverted towards the door. Immediately I heard the sound of clicking heels.

"Finally, you decided to wake up." Maria rolled her eyes.

"How many days has it been?" I asked.

"Three days."

"I know Di Salvo." I spoke up.

"Who doesn't?" She sat on the side of my bed.

"Rest for now." She stood up.

"No! Who exactly are you? At least let me know everything before you go."

"Federico, you left a burden and she's exactly like you." She threw her hands in the air, grunting. "Aren't you worried about your health?"

"I couldn't care less. I want answers." I insisted.

"I'm your father's cousin. His mother and my mother were sisters. I was the last person he called for backup. Unfortunately, I got his call too late. Way too late." She mumbled the last part.

"What about the man?"

"Who?" She raised her eyebrows.

"Ivan, he said my sister killed his brother and gave him a hard time." My eyes searched hers, waiting for her to give me a reasonable answer.

"Ivan is a fool. Gia thought he was an enemy, killed his brother and even in her final moments she was still trying to fight him, refusing to believe he was there to help."

"And Di Salvo?"

"I thought you already knew him."

"I've only heard his name a few too many times."

"Okay? He's a powerful man. The Don of your father's Cosa Nostra, and the one who killed your father."

"What's a Cosa Nostra? My father never mentioned you or a cousin."

"We weren't that close but we pledged to help each other whenever in need. You don't know what your father does for a living? You don't know why he built that stupid hideout, do you?

"I know he wasn't a good man."

"Clever of him to inform you before his death."

"He was the underdog of a Mafia boss." She paused before continuing. "The mafia is a dangerous world, the only way you can escape a Mafia is by death. They kill, smuggle, kidnap, launder. The list is endless."

I gulped. "I want to kill Dante Di Salvo."

Her eyes widened before she laughed hysterically. I could have sworn she laughed so much there was a tear at the corner of her eye.

Maria clicked her tongue, she stared at me amused. "Do you know what you just said?"

"I'm not crazy." I pouted my lips in a frenzy.

"I won't call you crazy because you're a foolish young little brat." She scowled. "I also want him dead, but he isn't a man you can kill so easily, you twerp. I was going to train you for that anyway, so I made preparations. He killed a family member my mother treasured. He must die too."

"Grace. Fetch Armani for me, tell him to come with the documents I instructed him to prepare." She ordered Grace, who hurried away.

"I had your name changed." She said.

"Why?"

"Do you want revenge?" She asked me.

"Yes," I muttered.

"That's why."

Armani brought a file. Maria helped me sit up and opened the file for me to see.

"You're now a Da Costa. Serena Da Costa." She told me proudly.

I ran my hands over the name in the file and began to sob.

That day was the day everything completely changed. After recuperating, Maria trained me to be a killing machine and Raffaele played the role of my godfather, teaching me everything I needed to know about the Mafia.

FIFTEEN YEARS AFTER

"He proposed to me!" I shrieked.

"It's good." Maria had grown older, she was now in her fifties. She didn't look as young as she was before. Her blonde hair was shorter than it was before, she began to have some grey hair. However, it didn't stop her from acting youthful, it didn't stop her from being MARIA. Her lean frame remained as it was from the beginning.

"That wasn't part of the plan." It wasn't part of the plan from the start. I only wanted to kill Dante. I didn't want to marry his son. That fucking asshole just had to die before I could kill him myself.

"What were you expecting when you dated him?" Maria took a puff of her cigar.

I couldn't reply." I wasn't expecting marriage, there I was thinking I was going to get the key to destroying their mafia by getting as close to his son as possible. But that smart devil wouldn't let me go deep into his personal life.

"Listen. The plan wasn't just to kill Dante, it was to ruin their mafia and entire family. Is that clear?"

"I don't want to marry him!" I yelled and Maria's hand flew across my face, sharp and unforgiving.

"You will marry him! I did not spend time training you all these years to for you to turnout to be ungrateful." She spoke calmly. "Don't you realize the only way to destroy their Mafia is from inside the mafia." She threw her cigarette on the floor and stepped on it. "You will marry Adriano Di Salvo and destroy everything they've worked for."

"You want me to get married to that monster." My hand was still on my cheek.

"You're no less than a monster yourself. You've killed many. That MONSTER HAS BEEN TAMED BY YOU! Use that to your advantage, Serena."

I stared at Maria unbelievably.

"I raised you as my own daughter."

"Would you let your daughter marry a monster for revenge?"

"I wouldn't know. I don't have a daughter, Hun. I'm childless." She said that to remind me of my status."Or do you want me to remind you of the reason why you should get revenge?"

A tear slipped from my eyes. I couldn't bear to see those videos one more time. It wrecked me time. and time again. My body shook with fear. I had to do what I had to do. I had to marry Adriano and avenge my parents.

"If you don't want to do this, let me know. Even if Maria said something-" "I want to do this, father," I told Rafaelle and he sighed. Perhaps he wanted a child so badly that he treated me like his own. He was willing to kill Dante for me, but I wanted to do it myself. I wanted to do it myself. I should've allowed him to, maybe then I wouldn't have to marry his son. I looked at myself, my brown locs were braided neatly, not a single strand left astray across my face. My heavy wedding gown restricting me from moving freely. I wanted nothing than for it to be ripped off me. It was like a snow white like wedding gown. Dante was the witch who fed me an apple and I was marrying his son and not a prince, or maybe I was Elsa, would fit, but I wanted to burn Dante, not to freeze him. Anyway, I was certainly no princess ge

I sighed in approval and he zipped down my wedding gown, letting it drop to the floor. One night stand; it's a one night stand. I was bare in front of him and he still had his pants on. I immediately unzipped his pants, leaving both us with nothing but our underwear. He kissed me again, that time, so rough it felt like I had forgotten how to breathe, his hands traced my curves, kneaded my ass and unhooked my bra. He took a few steps back and looked at me, his lips slightly parted. "You're so beautiful. So beautiful, I'm grateful I waited till now." His voice became raspy. "Me too." I breathed out. "I can't promise I'll be gentle." He ran his finger through his hair. I did tame the beast. A ruthless, heartless, scary man was being considerate of how he was going to handle me. "It's okay." I assured him. "It's

I got off bed and changed into my bathing robe, tied my hair into a messy bun and went into the bathroom to brush. "Serena." I heard Adriano's voice from the room. He hadn't left like I thought he did. I went out with the brush in my mouth and saw him holding a tray of food. I saw a plate with pancakes, blue berry and a bottle of maple syrup. My favorite breakfast. He was really trying to give his all, but I didn't get married to him to get all lovey dovey. I mumbled some words, telling him I wanted to quickly brush my teeth, but they only came out as gibberish. I guess he got the message though as he gestured for me to go. I finished and came back. He was already sitting on the bed, and the tray was on a small round wooden table. He was shirtless but had an apron on. At least he wore pants. Adriano was at least taller than six feet. I was small an

"Well, first off I don't know why he allows no one into the office, secondly he has something of mine in his possession." "Come with me." Lia said leading the way. "You see Adri is a very private person. I'm surprised he's comfortable with letting you do as you please." "Not exactly." I mumbled. "Did you say something?" She turned. "No." "Alright then." She looked away. "Even though he made me his other mother, I'm still not allowed to go into the office whenever he's absent, even if I just wanted to clean it. But I see how he looks at you." She faced me and I halted. "He looks at you with the same eyes he looked at his late mothe

"I hate liars, Rico. I really do. I saved your family, gave you my undying protection, let you off with your debts, and the only thing you could do to me was rat me out?" The man shook his head violently. Must be hard for him, I thought. I had dealt with men like him in the past, men who would lie till they die. Telling the truth should at least redeem them somehow at their last breath, but some things can't be helped...some things have to go to the grave. One of Adriano's warehouses in Sicily was raided. From their conversation and the file that Adriano threw on the floor before he brutally hit Rico, I gathered that the

CHAPTER 9: Focus on What's Important! Adriano was still in the bathroom, cleaning himself, and the maids had thrown out his blood-drenched shirt. He had asked me to join him, but I declined. Instead, I stayed on the bed and fumbled with a locket containing a photo of my family. Adriano had seen it a couple of times, but he didn't know what was in the pendant. My phone rang, and I saw Maria's name on the screen. We didn't say much to each other after she forced me into marriage with Adriano. I understood her desperation to avenge my father and her family. But I didn't want to have to get married to do that. I was scared that I'd end up carrying the child of my father's murderer. Thank goodness for birth control pills. I put my chain with the locket around my neck and stepped out of the house into the garden. I called her back, and she picked up. I stayed silent, expecting her to break the silence, and she did as expected. "Don't be so petty, Serena," she spoke through the phon

"I know, but I see you every day and that's enough. You have a big Mafia to look after; you have no time for such luxuries, Adriano." "Do you think I cannot make time for you?" He sat up as well, sensing that we were about to have a serious discussion. His green eyes stared intently into mine. "No, I know you can, but-" "Then let me make time for you. Let me make you happy." The moments when his beautiful green eyes softened for me were the times I got hella confused. "You already make me happy." I was determined to convince him. I didn't have time for something so frivolous. I didn't want anything to attach us or connect us after I ruined him. I didn't want to feel bad. "I'm happy here. I'm happy when I see you. I'd rather die honorably by the sword than give up easily like a coward." I dodged his attack. "You take things too seriously. So seriously that you've taken this fencing match as a way to have fun with me." He struck again. "You're taking this too lightly." I struck back, the blades almost touching him. "If you two stop the small talk and focus on your fencing, we'll be able to leave here faster." Pietro commented, looking absolutely apathetic. "Shut up, Pietro." Our swords collided abruptly, while our glaring gazes met Pietro's bored face. He was supposed to be watching us. "I need a drink." He waved and left. So much for a bodyguard. Hello, I'm Tori, the author of this book. I don't know where to begin, but thank you so much for sticking with me until the end. If you're reading this, you have a big place in my heart.Initially, this book was supposed to be 30 chapters for a competition I joined last year, but it ended up lasting longer than expected, so I could not use it anymore as a short story.Amid illnesses, school issues, and writer's block, I was able to complete "Wrecking My Husband" after a year. This is my first Mafia book, and honestly, I was so scared to continue with it. Sometimes I felt exhausted because this is the first time I'm writing anything romantic, and it just had to be a dark romance. My main genre is horror, so it was challenging.I had to take breaks to focus on so many things and think long and hard about how to connect the feelings of my characters to the readers.I did not think anyone would read this, and I'm sure many must have given up due to my very slow updates. But I'm healthy no

The same eyes I used to hate for looking just like my father's, now made me happy each time I saw them in my daughter's face. On weekends, Aria and I would take strolls around the mansion to talk about everything on our minds, as well as things or people that bother us. Then we'd come to a conclusion on how to handle those situations. Most of the time, it ended well. Sometimes we'd argue about it, then settle it. But it was our ritual that we started after a year of marriage. We wanted to be completely honest with each other, no matter what, so that we could learn to embrace each and every side of one another. "Ready?" She hugged me from behind. "We have to be fast before Rick and Rosaline get here." "I am." Every time I looked at her, I felt blessed. She did not look

Six months had gone by, and I could not be happier. We weren't ready to rush things. I knew Serena, but I could not say much about Aria. I wanted to know her completely just as she wanted to know me as well. And I love her all the same; no, I do not think I can love her any less. She, without knowing, has me completely wrapped around her fingers, and that is where I'd like to remain. Although the construction company boomed over time, it was a facade for the real deal: my Mafia. She gave me her support in both aspects, bagging contracts back and forth. She was a force, an unstoppable force. Even when I could obviously handle the matter, I left it to my woman so I could flaunt her intelligence to everyone. People would often tell me that I fell for a shrewd businesswoman, and it was an undeniable fact. I got worried from tim
