" Then where the hell is Daniel Davis? '' Lucas growled, making everyone freeze in their spot. " he.... he is not here? '' Michael looked around and noticed there was no sign of Daniel. He quickly fell on his knees and apologised, " I am so sorry Lucas' ' he begged with his head low.

" Find him now! " Lucas ordered and turned back to sit on his chair.

An hour later Michael returned with his boys following behind him. " he is no were to be found. '' he spoke with his head lowered.

Bang! Lucas kicked the chair before him, making everybody shiver. " get lost, all of you. now! " he growled and everyone vanished one by one leaving him alone on the rooftop.

" Daniel you were lucky today " he smirked, pushing his hair away from his forehead.

" Why are we here? " Pearl asked. Everything was alright when suddenly Daniel dragged her into the woods which was situated at the back of their school building. She couldn't understand a thing. He even refused to answer her question.

" Let's go now " Daniel grabbed her hand and led her out of the wood. She was like a small bunny following behind him.

Pearl tugged on his sleeves, making him stop in his tracks. " What now? " He asked , looking at the tiny girl before him, her face was red from running and her hair was messy from the wind. He raised his hand and tugged a strand of hair behind her ear and his hand was slapped mid air. " Will you answer now? " she was frustrated and wanted to know what was going on, " didn't he say that they were safe in her room? "

" Lucas was looking for us so we had to hide. " He spoke so casually as if he was not talking about the bully but instead about his buddy. Pearl rolled her eyes and they reached their classroom.

Pearl opened her big eyes even wider than the classroom before her. It was nothing like a classroom. It was like a luxurious room. Even the desk and chair were so beautiful and fancy Pearl couldn't believe her eyes.

Daniel smiled looking at the adorable girl before him he rubbed her back and pushed her forward. " Let's go, you are standing in the way " his words pulled her out of her thoughts and she turned back and saw that she was really standing in the way blocking the entrance. Some students stood behind her praying that she would move forward. " I am sorry " she quickly got out of the way and the students relished a sigh of relief.

Pearl and Daniel sat on the second bench near the window. " this class is so big we can play soccer in here, '' she whispered in his ear and he chuckled in response.

Pearl felt very comfortable with Daniel. She felt like they knew each other for a long time.

After some time their class teacher entered and introduced himself and asked everyone to introduce themselves.

" Hello class my name is David Brown I will be your class teacher for this whole year. "After he finished his introduction he asked the students to introduce themselves. " let's start with this row here " David pointed at the first row and a fat girl stood up from her seat and spoke, " hello my name is Nancy " everyone clapped and the process continued.

" I am nervous " Pearl whispered and Daniel rubbed her head to console her, " it's okay. "

" the lady and the gentlemen there can you stop showing you love affection, please? there are some single people here as well " David joked and the class Interrupted with laughter everyone turned their face towards them to have a good look at the couple.

Pearl lowered her face and her cheeks were red, from all the attention she was receiving, Daniel on the other hand smirked casually.

" He is so handsome, " someone from the student said. " The girl is so cute they make a cute couple, " someone else added.

Pearl was more than embarrassed hearing this.

" Okay class, let's not disturb the couple and proceed with our introduction. " David smiled and the class laughed again.

" I am tired " Pearl placed her tired head on her desk. She was so tired both mentally and physically, " come let's grab something to eat " she was half dragged half lifted towards the canteen.

Pearl sat on her chair looking at all the dishes in front of her. " Are you going to eat all of these? " she pointed a shaky finger at the food before her, it was too much for the two of them to finish.

" Why not? " Daniel placed a tissue on her lap and passed her a spoon. " Eat now, " he said.

Everyone around looked at them with jealously.

Pearl filled her mouth with a lot of food that her cheeks bulged and she couldn't chew properly. Suddenly they heard a commotion around them and a group of tall boys entered the canteen.

Daniel grabbed his fork tightly looking at the tall boy entering the canteen.

All the girls felt like fainting seeing such a handsome boy before him. He had a smirk on his face and his thick black hair was roughly pushed back. He was the perfect example of a combination of evil and handsome. He was devilishly handsome.

While girls drooled over his handsomeness, boys gave him a jealous look.

Lucas entered ignoring all the girls who were ready to throw themselves on him. His eyes were just focused on the couple who sat at the corner. He couldn't see the girl's face as she was looking down. Just then Pearl raised her face and met with his cold eyes, his glance was so strong that she choked on her food coughing violently. " Here you should eat slowly " Daniel passed her a glass of water and rubbed her back. Pearl eventually calmed down.

Lucas stopped in his tracks. He couldn't see her face as Daniel was covering her. He moved forward to take a good look but Daniel looked at him and gestured him to go back, Lucas smirked, " it seems she is very important to him " Michael whispered.

" Who was he? He looked so dangerous, " Pearl couldn't help but ask. Daniel looked at her and helped her wipe her mouth. " Stay away from him " he warned her and saw her small face filled with confusion.

sigh!

" He is Lucas Whitlock " he informed her and saw her face turn pale. " the... the bully? " she asked and saw him nod.

Pearl remained quiet and started pondering at the fact that everyone turned quiet when he entered the Canteen. Everyone looked at him with respect and fear.

Black eyes which were narrowed as if he didn't care about anything in this world, a sharp jawline which was like a razor that was cutting into every girl's heart. He was no doubt gorgeous but his heart was evil and black Pearl looked at the boy before her. Dark brown hair and delicate features he was as handsome as Lucas but these two were completely different from each other. " fallen in love with me already " Daniel commented he saw her looking at him for the last ten minutes, " shut up " Pearl spoke with flushed cheeks. She hid her head and started eating again.

" What do you want to eat? '' Selina moved closer and tried to touch his hand but Lucas stopped her. " you know her? " he pointed at a girl. She was busy stuffing her mouth with food. Her long hair was pulled in a high ponytail and her Cherry lips looked so kissable that even she wanted to look at her. " no '' she replied and saw him looking at her with so much interest that she felt jealousy raise in her.

" go talk to her and ask her name " Lucas wanted to know everything about her " just who is she " he thought in his head. Selina looked at him as tears filled her eyes.

" Hi , I am Selina D'cuz. " Selina extended her hand before her and saw Pearl looking at her with her big eyes.

Pearl looked at her and extended her hand as well but her hand was grabbed by Daniel before it could touch her. " What do you want, Selina? " Daniel looked annoyed. He stood up and stared at her with his cold eyes. " I just wanted to say hi " Selina smiled which didn't even reach her eyes. " It's okay Daniel " Pearl whipped her mouth and stood up and extended her hand forward. " hii, my name is Pearl Hart. Nice to meet you " she introduced herself and Selina was shocked to hear her voice it was so soft and sweet. Selina tried to hide her jealousy and smiled back, taking her hand and shaking it. " See you around " with it she turned back.

The bell rang indicating that the lunch break was over and everyone went back to their classroom. " I am so full " Pearl rubbed her plumb stomach and walked with much difficulty. " It's all your fault " she looked at him and pointed her finger. " Help me now " she extended her arm for him to take and they slowly made their way towards their classroom. " You look like a pig, " Daniel said looking at her, she couldn't even walk properly.

Pearl rolled her eyes and with a lot of struggling they finally reached their class. opening the door they were welcomed by David's shocked face. " students, don't you think it is too early for this? " he pointed at the plump stomach of Pearl and the hand which was holding it. "Sir, it's not what you think " Pearl tried to explain, " she eats a lot " Daniel's careless voice came from behind and David released a sigh of relief.

Pearl walked happily she was very happy her first day was so good Daniel followed behind her with his bag on his back and Pearl's bag in his hand, that stupid girl refused to lift her bag and threw it at him. he left with no other choice had to pick it up and now she was happily running, " you are so slow " Pearl stopped and looked at the tired boy behind her. " Come fast, " she said again. " Thanks " Pearl pulled her bag from his hand and closed her door on his face, " bye " came her cheerful voice from the other end of the room.

" idiot " Daniel smiled before entering his own room.

After reporting everything that happened today to her mother except the teasing part of course, Pearl fell back on her bed, " oh I am so tired " she closed her eyes to rest, as soon as she closed her eyes she was greeted by those black eyes and that handsome face smirking at her. Pearl opened her eyes, " he is hot " she rolled on her stomach, " but dangerous " she thought.

She rolled again on her back and stared at the ceiling until she fell asleep. Unknown to her, someone else stood up the whole night thinking about her.

Lucas looked out of the window and a letter wrapped in a pink envelope with a cute red heart printed on it was resting on his window. He picked it up. " nonsense " he raised his hand and threw it into the dustbin without even opening it. He knew it was a love letter from some random girl who wanted to be with him without knowing the consequences.

he pushed his hair away and a face with puffed up cheeks flashed into his mind, " Pearl Hart " he smirked and leaned back in his chair unintentionally thinking about her.

Pearl opened her eyes and saw it was already dark outside. She sat on her bed and noticed she was so tired that she didn't even change her uniform. She quickly changed her uniform and ran in her bathroom to wash her face but ended up taking a shower.

" ah nice " she relaxed when the cold water touched her body and she washed up quickly. Putting on her shorts and tshirt pulling her hair in a bun she sat on her study table to revise her course, " I have to do the best " she reminded herself and continued to study till late that night.

It had been a week. Seven days of pretending to be Pearl. Of swallowing down the truth like a secret that might rot me from the inside out. No one noticed. Not really. They still called me by the name that wasn’t mine. Still treated me like the girl who arrived at the academy dazed and forgetful. Still saw the version of me they expected to see. But I saw it. In the mirror. In the way I stood. The way my voice had softened, lilting into the same cadence Rosie used to have when she whispered to the stars from her bedroom window. I saw it in the way my fingers reached up—absent, automatic—to tuck my hair behind my ear whenever I was nervous. Just like she used to do. Just like I used to do. Rosie was slipping out of me like light through cracked glass, and I didn’t know how to stop it. And Lucas… he noticed something. I could feel it. He didn’t say anything. But I’d catch him staring sometimes, brow creased in that quiet, careful way of his—like he was trying to

And I screamed and screamed as loud as I can to stop the voices in my head, to hush them from consuming me entirely. The room was pitch-black, but I could still see the flames. Still hear the screech of tires, the shattering glass, the last words my mother ever said to me—Rosie, close your eyes. And I had. For years. But now they were open. Wide open. And everything hurt. The door slammed open. I barely had time to breathe before he was there—Lucas, heart in his throat, panic in his eyes. “Pearl!” He was at my side, hands cupping my face like I might vanish. “What happened? Are you okay?” I couldn’t speak. Not right away. Because looking at him felt like bleeding. He was older now. Broader. More haunted. But he still had the same eyes—the ones that used to look at me like I was his world. Not Pearl. Rosie. And that was the part that shattered me most. He was holding me like I was someone else. Like I was a girl with a different name, a different story. But I

The candlelight is low. Flickering. Dying. I walk barefoot down a hallway lined with mirrors—dozens of them, tall and arched, gilded in gold that’s flaking away. The floor is marble, but my footsteps don’t echo. It’s like the air itself is swallowing the sound. Heavy. Watching. My dress clings to me, unfamiliar. Pale gold, stitched with roses. I don’t remember putting it on. Everything smells like rosewater and smoke. I pause beside a mirror. My reflection stares back, but there’s something off. I lean closer. The tilt of my head, the shape of my mouth, the line of my shoulders—it’s all right, and yet… wrong. Like I’ve seen this face on someone else. It’s me. Of course it’s me. But my stomach tightens. I force myself to look away. That’s when I see him. Daniel, standing at the far end of the corridor, dressed in black, shadows curled around his shoulders like a cloak. He holds a bouquet of roses—blackened, wilting, soaked in something that drips down his wrist.

I press the phone to my ear and glance at the stars. The rooftop is cold beneath me, slates hard against my back. The wind carries that soft chill that always makes me feel like something’s about to shift. My mom’s voice comes through the speaker, warm and clipped with concern.“You sound tired, sweetie. Are they overworking you again?”I let out a breath—half a laugh, half exhaustion.“No, it’s fine. Just a lot of assignments.”A pause.“And late-night walks,” I almost add. “And watching someone unravel.” But I don’t.She hums thoughtfully. I can hear her stirring something, probably tea. Home always sounds like comfort.“Have you made any new friends yet? You never talk about anyone there.”I hesitate, then lie.“Yeah. A few.”She doesn’t press. She never does. Maybe she thinks I’m just quiet. Or maybe she’s learned not to dig when I’m like this—floating somewhere far away from where my body is.“Your father says hi,” she says. I can hear him grumbling in the background, something a

The wind clawed at the windows like it was trying to warn me. I stood at the edge balcony leaning against the railing. Below, the ocean was bathed in silver moonlight, still and too perfect. A lie, like everything else lately. The moon hung low tonight, pale and sharp-edged. Pearl would say it looked like a blade. My phone buzzed once on the table. The number flashed. Cale. I snatched it up. “Report.” “Sir,” he said, voice crisp, but edged with something else. Hesitation. “ I have the report .” The cold that slid through me wasn’t a surprise—it was confirmation. I said nothing. Just waited. “She’s not Rosie,” he continued. “… she’s not the one who died in that accident.” I closed my eyes. My chest didn’t rise. I was stone now. “I had to dig deep, sir. Most of the records were burned or erased, but a few medical files survived in private storage. Enough to run a sequence. And... it matched someone else.” “Who?” My voice came out hoarse, like it hadn’t been used in days. “He

Apollo whined softly as I knelt beside him, his blue eyes watching me with quiet protest. His paw pressed against the doorframe like he understood what it meant—that he couldn’t follow me past this point. “I know,” I whispered, running a hand gently down the sleek curve of his back. “I don’t like it either. " He nuzzled my wrist, and I swallowed hard. “I’ll be back after classes, then we'll go back home, alright? You’ll be safe here.” My voice sounded too sure. Like I was convincing myself more than him. He tilted his head, ears flicking at some distant sound, but stayed close—refusing to move from the doorway. “I have to go,” I said, brushing my thumb just under his chin, where the fur was softer. “You know the rules. No panther cubs allowed in Elite Garden’s holy halls.” my phone ringed again, I looked down it was Lucas calling me. " yes, I am coming. ” That almost earned a huff from him. Almost. The engine purred beneath my hand, smooth and obedient like always. The car was built for silence and speed—one of my father’s more useful indulgences. Black exterior, sleek leather interior, the kind of vehicle that announced your presence before you ever stepped out of it. Pearl sat beside me, legs crossed at the ankle, eyes on the window. The early morning light painted the world gold, but she didn’t seem to notice it. She hadn’t said much all morning. I kept one hand on the wheel, the other resting near the gearshift, close enough to brush against her thigh if I reached. I didn’t. Music played softly in the background, something mellow she usually liked. She didn’t hum along like she used to. I stole a glance at her. Eyes open, but distant. Her fingers were curled in her lap, nails tracing the lines of her skirt like she was trying to count something she couldn’t name. She looked tired—not the kind of tired that sleep fixed. The kind that lived in the bones. “You okay?” I

The next morning, I move like nothing happened. I pour coffee, feed Apollo, fold a blanket left on the couch. Lucas is in the shower, and I can hear the water running upstairs like white noise. Safe. Familiar. Grounding. But every now and then—just in the gaps between movements—I feel it again. The weight. Not heavy enough to drag me down, but just enough to notice. Like walking through air that's a little too still. Like forgetting what you were doing mid-sentence. Like something watching from the corners, but only when you don’t look directly. I tell myself I’m fine. And mostly, I am. But the dream clings. Not in vivid images—those faded as soon as I woke—but in texture. In the way I flinch when the kettle whistles. In the way I glance at the kitchen doorway without meaning to. In the way Apollo follows me from room to room, tail low, eyes tracking the corners of the ceiling as if he remembers too. I don’t tell Lucas. I make him breakfast. I brush my fingers throug
