Now more than ever he needed to find Mateo. And he needed to find his mate and determine her connection to his private investigator.
Laurence finally made his way back to his brother’s house. He had no idea how long he had been running and burning off steam, but he needed to come back and discuss their next course of action.
His muscles ached from his rigorous run, but it was nothing compared to the empty feeling he’s been trying to ignore since he lost his mate.
Laurence’s frustration had died down a lot and now all he felt was a deep desire and motivation to find his mate. Her scent was forever engraved in his mind. He found himself thinking about it so much he thought he smelled it sometimes.
But it was only his imagination.
Laurence shifted and pulled his clothes back on. They were cool as they brushed against his sweaty skin, but he didn’t mind. He knew he would warm up pretty quickly.
Sauntering towards Levi’s cabin, he focused on what he would say and what his next course of action would be to find more information on where Mateo had ended up.
His mood lightened and a small smile tugged at his lips as he thought of seeing Doriane, his brother’s mate.
He remembered months ago when he found her, scared and helpless at the gas station. She had just escaped from a lifetime of horrid torture and was running from the men who promised her another lifetime of pain.
After saving her from the men, he brought her here to his brother’s pack. Levi’s attraction was instant as he recognized her as his mate. He couldn’t blame his brother for being so protective of his injured mate but Laurence wished he didn’t get so banged up from his brother’s possessiveness.
Levi had a horrible temper. Surprisingly, it had improved exponentially since he met Doriane, but every time Laurence would get around Doriane, Levi’s possessive side would come out and he’d get some kind of thump on the head or get shoved into the wall.
Now Laurence loved Doriane like a sister. Regardless of his physical punishments from Levi, he loved pushing his brother’s buttons and innocently flirting with the clueless woman, but never thought of her more than a sister.
She may be oblivious to a lot of things, but her understanding of how their world operated was not one of them. She had learned long and hard how cruel this world could be and she deserved such a beautiful ending with Levi.
Laurence didn’t bother knocking and opened the door to his brother’s cabin, welcoming himself in their comfortable abode. “Levi! I’m here!”
Laurence heard a light squeal before Levi stood in the entrance of the kitchen with arms folded and a stern look on his hard face. “Ever heard of knocking?”
Doriane peeked around from behind him, drying her hands on a towel. He new he must have startled her, but he felt little guilt for the action.
She was always jumpy.
“What are you making?” Laurence asked, gesturing to the flour smothered on Doriane’s shirt and cheek.
“Umm, bread. Sorry, it’s not done yet.”
“That’s fine, I’ve got plenty of time to wait. Why are you making bread at ten at night?”
Levi scowled, a look that he was always receiving from his older brother. “It’s past midnight. Doriane had a hard time staying awake, so she was baking to pass the time.
Laurence smiled, feeling proud of Doriane’s hobby.
He had passed a lot of his own recipes down to her and she loved branching out and building off of them. He knew Levi was also secretly glad to Laurence took the time to teach her because Levi wasn’t very good at cooking.
“Laurence, take it to my office.”
Laurence shot a wink at Doriane, who looked uncomfortable at his small action. “Until later, beautiful.”
Levi shoved Laurence roughly down the hall, leaving a small feeling of satisfaction in Laurence’s chest.
He could use a little pick-me-up anyway.
“Even finding your mate can’t keep you from flirting with my mate?” Levi grumbled, putting a slight damper on Laurence’s cheerful mood.
“What can I say? I saw her first.”
Levi slammed his phone on the desk and glared openly at his brother.
Before Doriane, he would have already been slammed into the ground and had his face punched out.
He was making progress.
Although, Levi knew that his mate was much too skittish for him to be acting so violently.
“You didn’t have to throw me,” Landon complained.
Levi rolled his eyes and fixed his phone he angrily threw on his desk. Landon was face-timing this time, dark bags and a slight scowl marring his worn face.
“Sorry to keep you up, Landon.”
“Oh, but you don’t mind keeping me and Doriane up?”
Laurence shrugged. “Nah. Doriane could have gone to sleep, you’re just lucky she’s smart enough not to sleep without your grumpy butt. Nobody wants to be around you when you are tired.”
“Laurence, enough. It’s late—just tell us what happened tonight,” Landon snapped, scooting closer to the camera.
Laurence felt the empty hole in his chest return at the reminder of what happened.
He carefully explained. Landon and Levi listened silently, letting him spew his information. When he was done, he felt the empty feeling in his gut return with a vengeance.
He already needed to go on another run to relieve the pressure gripping his chest.
“Who would have thought the great Laurence Baxter would find his mate. And that she would run away from him. I told you to stop sleeping around.”
Laurence held back a sharp retort from his accusation, knowing Levi was right.
It’s very possible the reason she left him tonight was because she recognized him and didn’t want to be stuck with a playboy.
“Why did she run away?” Landon muttered, not catching what Levi was trying to say. “You said she was a wolf; she would have known as quickly as you did that you were her mate.”
It was always a new girl every night. Just someone to fill his desire. He would seduce them, make them feel special, have a nice rump between the sheets, then leave them the next day.
Seemed like a win-win situation for both of them, especially when he found the right girl.
Though now he knew it was nipping him in the butt.
Admittedly, Laurence hasn’t been with anyone since he found Doriane. He and his brothers spent so much time and energy into finding the Arroyos and putting a stop to their illegal activities that he simply hadn’t had time.
The silence that hung between them was uncomfortable and Laurence couldn’t help but assume his brothers were no doubt thinking the same thing as he was.
Laurence was not fit to have a mate.
“Not to change the subject, but I have something else for you, Laurence,” Landon declared, feeling how uncomfortable it made Laurence feel.
Laurence nodded and Landon continued.
“I finally got a hold of the guys with the security footage we’ve been tracking. They agreed to meet us at one of their local bars tomorrow at noon.”
“What did they ask for in exchange for the footage?”
“Two grand.”
What.
The.
Heck.
There was no way he could give up that much money.
“You need that footage, Laurence. Without it, we are still at a loss of where Mateo is. This is our only real lead.”
Laurence tipped his head back and released a strained breath.
He already knew he was going to do it, he just hoped it gave him the reward he had been searching for.
“Alright. Text me the address. I will be there with the money.”
Eva finally slowed down enough to gulp in large lungfuls of air. She placed her hands on her knees and bent over slightly, trying to suck breath into her burning lungs. She sprinted for almost a half a mile before she ran another two miles to reach the motel. She trembled from the adrenaline still coursing through her veins and she crouched low
Laurence released his suffocating grip on his steering wheel and hesitantly took his keys from the ignition, keeping his eyes peeled on the bustling bar in front of him the entire time. It had been two long months since Mateo disappeared and it was driving him mad. Laurence had zero experience with finding people, but he was learning quickly that this meant you had to be stealthy and sly. No good information lied on the surface, so he had to be careful as he started associating with people that could easily get him in trouble.
Eva stared down at her mate, a look of shock covering his handsome features as she gave him one last fleeting look. She needed to leave before it got her in trouble. Eva spun around, making sure the flash drive was still secured in her bra before hustling to the exit sign. She was feet from the door before the strong hand of her mate grabbed her shoulders and spun her, his eyes frantic.
“If you bump my foot again and I’m going to rip out your eyeballs,” Eva glared at Laurence, his movements freezing as he realized he was pressed against her foot. Embarrassment passed through him, which he quickly hid with a hurried mumbled apology and slid over on the hardwood so he was no longer brushing against her bruised ankle.
“Here’s something for you to sleep in,” Laurence offered, grabbing a large shirt and some basketball shorts from the drawer. Eva shifted her weight uneasily, her arms still folded tightly over her chest as she surveyed the room he was letting her stay in. It was about the size of her hotel room. It wasn’t much
Laurence’s head was still spinning by the time he registered she even left. He watched with a sinking feeling in his stomach as the dirt clouds rested from her hasty retreat. Despite her quick escape, Laurence couldn’t get the electric tingles from her searing lips out of his system. Her response was not only unexpected, but it was also thrilling.
The loud music thundered through her whole body and the stench of alcohol and sweat scrunched her nose, but Eva still found the desire to stay. The secret of what happened lies in this one guy. She had to stay. After seeing Cullen’s face on that tape and watching those men mercilessly beat her brother, Eva knew she had no choice but to follow the only lead she could really hang onto.
Laurence scanned the large bar, searching for anything that would lead him to Eva or Cullen. He had finally been able to find the club and when he caught a whiff of the delectable scent of his mate, he burst in. Her scent was faint and was now swallowed up by the overwhelming scent of sweaty bodies, but that did little to deter his determination to find her. Eva was pretty tall, especially when she had heels on, and there was no way she could blen
5 years later Laurence cursed under his breath as his truck pulled to a stop and he put the vehicle in park. The once glorious pack just north of where he used to call home was now nothing but splintered wood and piles of ripped fabric. The dark home was glowing in the night, lit by some dim lights that managed to remain intact. Five years and three destructive wolves later, Laurence still wasn’t used to seeing the damage these wolves could make on their packs and families.
Eva followed as Laurence launched the last of his bags into the back of his truck. The morning dew stuck to her shoes as she tread across the grass, her feet chilling from the moisture. She stood beside him as he gazed at his empty home, only furniture left inside the large house. Eva saw the longing and the pain etched on her mate’s face and a pang of sadness settled in he
Eva lifted her eyebrow and looked warily at Laurence as he placed down a large bowl of pasta in front of her. “Eat. It’s not poisoned.” Eva watched him carefully as he sat beside her, his own bowl of pasta much smaller than hers. She had lost a lot of weight that she needed to gain back. When Laurence picked up his fork, Eva finally did as well and she spooned a forkful of pasta into her
Laurence stared at the gray tombstone, his hands still shoved into the pockets of his pressed black suit. His brothers remained by his side, all of them completely silent as they stared at the burial site. Everything felt like it was happening too fast, but also that it wouldn’t be over soon enough. Laurence pushed back another wave of emotion and swallowed hard, clearing his throat.
Eva slowed down as a yell floated through the night. She honed in on the direction it came from and slowly slipped down from the tree, landing swiftly on her feet and stepping towards the yell that unmistakably belonged to Peter Arroyo. She could hear his increased breathing and heart-rate as she came across Peter, who was laying under Mateo’s large black wolf, his gun pointed straight at Mateo’s large form. “Careful, Pete. We wo
Every muscle in Eva’s body tensed as she glared at the gun pointed at her face. “What are you doing?” Amber matched the heat in her eyes with her own distrust. “That man ruined my life. He took my future away from me and my family. Trust me, this is what he deserves.”
Laurence gave one last fleeting glance as Eva nearly dragged his father’s large body around the corner. He had felt his heart drop in his chest when he realized that Eva was trying to extract her revenge on Peter. He knew she could handle herself and he knew that she would not give up easily, but he also knew that the Arroyos played dirty.
Eva glanced behind her to see Mateo slip the gun from the back of his pants, obviously feeling the uncertainty as she had. He made brief eye contact with her before slightly nodding. Reaching into the side pocket of her pants, she slipped out the large knife and curled her fingers around the hilt. The dagger was long and sharp, but it was hardly going to be as effective as the gun Mateo held. At first, she argued with her brother about the weapon, but she finally relented and grabbed the dagger once she realized he wasn’t going to give it up.
Eva gulped and stepped out of the car, eyeing the road ahead of them. They would continue their journey on foot. They weren’t too far from Peter’s building, but they were far enough away that their cars wouldn’t be obvious if they left them here.
