[Melancholy]

SIERRA

"Isn’t that crazy, mom? How can you not be my mother? You raised me. You birthed me. Right?"

My mother hadn't moved or spoken since I said it. Why? Why was she so silent? Her eyes flitted between the table, the wall behind my head, and her hands but not my face.

This wasn't happening. It couldn't be. "Mom," I croaked, tears welling in my eyes. "Are you not my mom?" My voice was so soft and broken that I barely recognized it.

Her mouth opened and closed a few times, but no words came out.

"Mom, please tell me this stranger didn't know something about me that you and dad hid from me all my life? Are you my parents or not?" I all but screamed at her.

"Watch your tone, young lady!"

I laughed bitterly, throwing my head back as though I'd heard the stupidest yet funniest joke of the century. I even wiped the imaginary tear from my eye. "Watch my tone." I reiterated mockingly. "You cannot answer one easy question—which I knew the answer, yet you can tell me t

[Unrequited Love] ARIANNE I curled up in bed with the sun beaming down on my face, eyes swollen and sleep-deprived. Since I came in last night, I hadn't moved from this spot on the bed. Nor had I slept a wink. My entire body ached, and it was all because Zach couldn't accept what was. Everything was going so well between us. We'd found each other, and although I was still head over heels in love with Sebastian—unsure if that would ever change—he could have given me the time I asked to at least try to make our relationship work. "Are you being serious right now? Mates are supposed to love each other. One isn't supposed to put the other on the back burner while they love another. It doesn't work like that," screamed Sable in my head. "What the hell would you know?" I grumbled at her and closed the link. Even that was giving me a headache. The last thing I needed was someone else telling me what I did was wrong when I knew it wasn't. I loved Sebastian with my whole heart. In my h

[Closing Doors] SEBASTIAN "What you're telling me is your first mate—the one who mysteriously died—told you I was in danger?" Sierra asked. She quirked an inquisitive brow, and then she began to laugh. "Sebastian, you understand what death means, right?" "Of course, I know what death means. It sounds ridiculous—believe me, I know—but it's the truth. When she told me, I didn't understand what she meant right away when she said to find her. Yeah, find who? Even Rory didn't understand until he put two and two together when he saw Sasha for himself. He, too, was skeptical. Hell, even my own mother cussed me for soiling Sasha's name." "And within reason! If my mother told me she saw my dead father and he gave her a message, I would say she was insane too," Sierra remarked. "Anyway, that was what sent me on the path to find you. When I left the bar, I was about to head back home and conjure up a lie to tell my mother why I returned without my second mate." "Okay. Then what changed you

[The Trail] SIERRA The next day, I was sitting at my writing desk, staring at a blank sheet of paper. I was damn near frustrated and angry at my lack of words. I'd been sitting there for about an hour. Still, I couldn't think of what to say or how to begin the letter. "How hard is it to string a few words together?" I banged my hand on the desk and winced with regret. "Ow!" "Okay, Sierra. Calm down. Take a deep breath..." I inhaled deeply and held my breath for another second. "... and exhale." As I did. All I needed were a few words. A few words to explain why I was writing this letter rather than addressing this matter face-to-face. And why I chose to leave with a man I hardly knew. Another few minutes went by and the words still refused to come. My brain was hurting from overthinking it, and I was certain my eyes would pop from their sockets soon enough after staring at the paper for so long. But I refused to sit there and force words out of my head. They should come naturally,

[The Strange Pull] ZAIDEN Head down, buried in the papers my father sent over an hour ago, a knock on the door interrupted my train of thought. “Yes, come in,” I called, drawing away from the desk, perturbed by the distraction. “Your Highness, please forgive my intrusion,” the guard called, his cheeks red as he kept his gaze low. “Sire, Mr. Gerard is requesting a meeting.” I didn’t wait for him to say anything further. Securing the documents on my desk from prying eyes, I scurried from the office and followed the guard out the door. He led me into my suite, where I found Gerard sitting in the parlor staring out the large windows. “Ah, Gerard, just the man I needed to see.” I advanced further into the room and closed the large doors behind me. “What good news do you have for me? Have they found her?” His back stiffened at my words. “My apologies, Your Highness, we lost the Princess.” His back faced the window, and our eyes met for the first time since I entered the room. I was

[Welcome Home Luna] SIERRA "Angel," a faraway husky voice called out, followed by a gentle hand on my thigh, shaking me awake. "Mm-mm, five more minutes." I groaned, swatting at the hand on my thigh. The person then chuckled. "Angel, as much as I love to watch you sleep, I’m afraid we are here." That perked me right up. I bolted upright, eyes wide, staring at the handsome face beside me, but when my eyes scanned the outside, that was when my curiosity got the better of me. Save for the most luxurious three-story structure. All around me were only trees, staring back at me. Trees on my left, my right, and even behind us. "Uhm, Sebastian?" "Yes Angel," he answered immediately, his voice a chipper to my dreary tone. "You said we were going to your pack." My eyes fluttered around the outside and I spotted seven people smiling and waving at us. "Sebastian, where are we and who are those people?" Instead of answering my slew of questions, he chuckled and exited the car. My hea

[Coming Home] SEBASTIAN I flagged Sierra to her right, answering her unasked question. "On your left, the door furthest away leads to the bathroom, while the other leads to your closet. Your clothes are still in your case. I figured you'd want to unpack them yourself." She turned to me with a cheeky and appreciative smile, enhancing her perky beauty. "Thank you." "Well, I'll leave you to it. While I deal with this matter, you can soak in the tub and probably grab a nap. The entire pack is dying to meet their Luna. I hope you don't mind, but I asked the cooks to prepare enough food for a feast." I turned on my heels and approached the door. The earlier I dealt with this matter, the sooner I could do the same. "Uhm, Sebastian," Sierra called in a meek voice. I pivoted on my heels, noting the blush covering her cheeks. She hung her head, almost embarrassed to meet my gaze. "Are we sleeping here together?" The redness in her cheeks grew brighter. I wanted to chuckle at her timidit

[The Recruit] Arianne Unbelievable! It was just unbelievable. How could he? Of all the ways Sebastian had laid his hands on me, it was never in this manner. Never with such rage and cruelty enough to want to kill me. I paced back and forth in my room, glaring every so often when I caught a reflection of myself in the mirror. Look at what I have become. A shell of the woman I once was and all for a man. For years, I pined and chased after a man who never cared to love me or reciprocate an ounce of the feelings I so adamantly carried for him. Yet, did he care? Not in the slightest. Not even when he barreled into me relentlessly, day after day, week after week, and month after month. How had I let myself become so used? How did I let myself become this person? I blew out a breath and wrapped my hands around my neck. Both the bruises from my father's and Sebastian's tyranny had already healed. Thank you, Goddess. Often enough, I pondered what my life would have been like if I hadn'

[Second Thoughts] SIERRA It had been two days since Sebastian and I returned to his pack and despite my longing to see my mother, I couldn’t believe how easy it was to adapt. After the dinner the other night, Sebastian took me on a walk around the grounds, showing me a few of his favorite places he liked to go to clear his head. Mostly the training arena. I had to laugh at how silly that was. I mean, who liked fighting that much. Then again, I suppose when you were the leader of a pack of wolves, knowing how to protect oneself and everyone else must be key. Madeline especially had been a Godsend. Since that first day I met her, I knew she would soon become a big part of my life in the pack. Taking me under her wing the way she did at the dinner, I could only imagine what else awaited me under her care. Then there was Rory and Kimberly—a match made in heaven. It was so easy to see their Goddess did not falter in pairing those two. Rory was goofy while Kimberly seemed somewhat shelt

[This Is Not The End] ARIELLA It took us a while to get there, but it was a pleasant walk. The trees were all in full bloom, and it smelled delightful. As we walked, I started feeling a little better. I felt lighter and happier. He was right, though. I didn’t need to worry about him. He was fine. And if he wasn’t, I would be there to take care of him. We reached the stream, and it was gorgeous, surrounded by a ring of tall redwoods and the sun setting behind them. The water glistened in the light. “It’s beautiful,” he murmured. “Yeah,” I agreed. I sat on the edge of the stream, watching the ripples in the water as the gentle breeze stirred the surface. Malik lay on his back next to me, his eyes closed and a contented expression masking his features. “I could get used to this. The tranquility here is unlike anything I’ve felt in a long time.” I rested my chin on my shoulder, watching him, feeling the butterflies flutter with glee in my stomach. Immediately, I felt better than I

[Memories] ARIELLA “I have a better idea,” I murmured as I studied the guard. “Instead of repeating everything to my father, why don’t you tell him yourself? Or, even better, have my mother look into your memories.” “Look into my memories?” Malik’s brow quirked in question. “How is she gonna do that?” I flashed him a smile, confident in my plan. “Here’s what hunters don’t know about my mom. Unlike the other wolves, my mother was born a witch from another realm. A realm where only witches, wizards, and mages existed.” “That’s, uhm... that’s something,” Malik acknowledged, the wheels in his head clocking overtime as he processed the information. “Yeah, so recently I learned my mom has this cool ability to see people’s memories,” I explained. “Lucky for me, I was born with a similar power. Mine is to see the outcome of major events. At least that’s what I think. Which was how we had known to expect another attack.” “From the moment we met, I knew there was something special about y

[A Favor] ARIELLA “All right, I can do that. I’ll tell you everything once you promise to do something for me in return.” He nodded, continuing to eat. “What will that be?” “I just need to know my family is okay. My cousin Amanda, the one I was here with recently, is pregnant. My mom is sick and—“ “Say no more,” I chimed in, cutting him off. “It is mainly my fault you are in this cell. Had you not been my mate—although you could’ve died in battle—you wouldn’t have been here.” He stopped chewing, looking at me with intense curiosity. “Are you sure you don’t want to know what I need you to do for me or the time to think it over?” I shook my head. “I doubt it’ll be worse than you locked in a cell.” “Okay.” He gave a brief chuckle. “I think this will be the first time I ever requested a favor from a wolf—a favor for a former hunter.” “A favor from your mate,” I corrected, which made him smile. “I will check on your family, Malik. If they’re okay, I’ll come back and tell you, an

[Debatable] ARIELLA Infuriated, hands balled into fists, nostrils flared, and hatred burning in my eyes, I stormed after my father. “Was locking him away seriously necessary?” I called out, trying to catch up with my father’s long strides. “He proved he was a wolf, yet you locked him away anyway, like some rabid dog.” Ahead, my father stopped and turned halfway towards me, leveling a look that said he’d heard enough. I had crossed the line and was making things worse. “I have to be sure he’s not an imposter, a hunter pretending to be a wolf. It’s like Alpha Declan pointed out. Nobody knows what made him a wolf.” I shook my head in disgust. “Malik did nothing wrong. He’s not some test used to see how well we can protect our pack.” “You’ve got no clue what you’re talking about,” Dad said, returning to his earlier pace. “There’s a lot to do. I suggest you focus on that before you join your mate in the cells.” “Ugh!” I let out an angry growl and kicked a small stone in my path, sen

[Not A Threat II] MALIK The moment I saw her face when I awoke after blacking out earlier, I realized how grateful I was to still be alive, even as a werewolf. Not just that. I also understood the severity of this werewolf bond Owen had told me about. The bond was more than just a physical connection. It was also both emotional and spiritual. It sure would take some getting used to. The love and concern in Ariella’s eyes, despite her efforts to hide it, told me she was also thankful I was alive. She was worried about me and hoped I would be okay. Little did she know how much effort it took not to kiss her then and there. Then, suddenly, the world got quiet. The wind rustling trees, the birds tweeting, and the insects chirping all stopped. Her breath was in my ear. I could feel her heartbeat, fast and steady. For a split second, my body froze, and my heart stopped beating. Just for a second, but once my body registered what was happening, it was everything and nothing like I imag

[Not A Threat] ARIELLA I placed my hand on his chest and willed him to wake up. His skin was warm to the touch, but he didn’t stir. I glanced around frantically, trying to find something to help him. My eyes landed on a large tree branch lying on the ground a few feet away. On my feet in seconds, I grabbed it and ran back to his side. I placed the branch under his arm and tried to apply pressure to the wound, but it was gushing blood. I had to do something, and fast. Or he would bleed out. Ripping off a piece of my shirt, I tied it around the branch, hoping it would stem the flow of blood. Thank the goddess, it had the desired effect. The blood slowed to a trickle. “El!” Abby screamed behind me, her heavy footfall letting me know she was running towards me. “Over here.” I shouted, never taking my eyes off my mate. I stripped off my belt and wrapped it around his arm, compressing the wound. “Oh, thank goodness!” she said as she knelt down next to me. “What the hell happened?”

[Is This The End?] DECLAN We marched further into the woods, where we came across a small camp. From where I stood, ten clicks away, I could smell the faint scent of death. As I approached, I noticed the bodies of several wolves, burned and bloody, lying in the dirt. I pulled out my bow and approached with caution, trailing behind the group. I held my breath as we stepped over the dead bodies. In an instant, my body grew tense as I scanned the area, trying to discern what had taken place at the camp. My fingers tightened around my bow out of reflex. “Are they all dead?” someone murmured in a low voice. “It looks that way,” I replied, my tone grim. “We have to be careful; whatever or whoever did this could still be out there.” My men nodded and followed me through the camp, their guns drawn. They found the bodies of several hunters, but no sign of what had killed them. A stillness hovered in the air, as if all life had been sucked out of this place. I peered into a nearby tent,

[Waiting Impatiently] DECLAN I set my jaw and drummed my fingers against my leg. You could hear the tension in the air. Over the last twenty minutes, my troops and I had been waiting in my parents’ old cabin for the hunters. I recall my parents taking me here as a child. When things were quiet on the pack lands in the summer, we’d come up here, and I’d spend hours in the lake five clicks north of here. Though I didn’t want to sully those fond memories of them by utilizing the cabin as a hideout during the war, it was the only accessible spot where we would be safe and keep an eye out for the hunters closing in on the pack. Hopefully, my parents wouldn’t be angry at me for using it other than as a vacation home. As the minutes ticked by, I felt my anxiety rise. I felt out of control, waiting for something awful to happen to my pack. I tried to tamp down my fear and focus on what we needed to do. All this panicking had me wondering if this was my last day alive. Since Jasper to

[Betrayal] MALIK I took the western route when Ariella and her companion were out of sight, heading toward the location where I knew the hunters would camp. I needed answers for this betrayal, despite the existence of a treaty between the two species. Trekking over fallen logs and broken twigs, I drew in a deep breath, filling my lungs with fresh air. I quickened my pace as I drew closer to the location, scanning the forest around me for any signs of movement. My heart thumped as I finally spotted the camp, its tents distinguishable among the trees. Owen emerged from the tent. He dialed something on his cell and pressed it to his ears. “Gil, it’s Owen. Bruno reported he saw four wolves heading your way. He said Malik killed Titus to protect a she-wolf and another wolf.” He said, frowning. “Yeah, I believe it’s her,” Owen answered after a minute, his voice slightly hushed. I froze, my stomach dropping to the ground. He paused, his frown deepening. “I’ll handle it,” he said. “
