I soon fell into the routine. Feeding in the mornings, cleaning up pens that needed an extra hand, and tour duty. I put my ten cents in anywhere they needed me. Each day was a bit different, I would feed different animals or clean different pens, or get different questions during tours. But the one thing that never changed, was Alastor. According to the manager, I was on Alpha duty. I was the one to feed him every meal. It was kinda an inside joke around here. I was the Alpha's little pet.
"Hey Dan," Kari came around the corner while I was fixing up Alastor's lunch. "Good to see he hasn't ripped you apart yet." She patted my back. Some other staff members that were working on the females' lunches decided to eavesdrop.
"More like got her pregnant. You see the way he looks at her? Plus, he won't even consider touching any of our females anymore." Brett commented while laughing with the other coworkers. Stupid Brett. I mumbled under my breath and decided to ignore them. I was actually growing fond of the huge beast. I was curious about him. Why he is acting the way he does with me. Just like every other meal, Alastor was laying in front of the feeding pen door. I pulled out my notebook. I started jotting down things I found interesting. I watched as one of the female wolves trotted up to him. According to some other people, this she-wolf, in particular, used to be his favorite. All the pups were hers. But he growled at her, making her scamper off. I made sure to write that down. I dumped the meat on the plate and opened the hatch. He walked in quickly and I closed it behind him.
"Hey Alastor, how are we?" I asked, his blue eyes stared back at me.
"I can't imagine how boring it is for you. Staying in the same enclosure." As if to back up my statement, I swore his eyes rolled. I jotted that down in my book while sliding down the wall to my butt. He silently began to eat. I started doing some work while he ate. Looking over old records and some more detailed instructions about Alastor. In the old schedules, it only took him two minutes to finish his meal. Nowadays it takes him ten. I wonder why that is. I looked up at him as if he could answer my question. And in a way he did. He was eating extremely slow. Pausing to stare at me in between each bite. I wrote that down as well. Our relationship from Monday to Friday was so much different. Monday I was terrified of him, today I only wanted to learn more. I opened his record and cringed. The first photo I saw was of him being tied down with chains. He was squished down by the metal into the bed of a truck. He had a huge muzzle on and his mouth seemed to be covered in blood. I flipped to the next photo and cringed even more. There was a photo of some guy's arm, ripped open from top to bottom. The man's tattoos were ruined, that was for sure. I began to read the report.
"Some poachers shot him and thought he was dead. They went to collect him but he was surprisingly still alive and attacked one of them. The other poachers shot him six more times and he passed out. They had to call the ambulance for their friend. Animal control, police, and the ambulance were at the scene. They took Alastor and were planning on putting him out of his misery but he had already recovered by the time they reached the facility. They ran some tests on him and his results were like no other. The bullet shells were still embedded in his chest and shoulder but the entryways had healed and scared over in mere minutes. He ran at a temperature that should have labeled him dead. His blood test showed different genes than normal wolves. They titled him one of a kind and demanded he be held in captivity for his safety. All the poachers were placed in jail, the attacked one died from loss of blood."
I ran my fingers over the bold text. I re-read it over and over again, trying to find some sense in the words. He had been shot a total of seven times and he was fine? Another photo showed his bullet wounds. Four in the chest and three in the shoulder. How had he not died? These scars looked years old. How had he healed in a matter of minutes? I wrote some notes in my book. I hadn't realized how long I was sitting there. Alastor barked at me softly, causing me to look up. He was finished eating, the occasional scraps of food here and there were all that was left.
"Oh sorry," I stood up quickly. "You've been through some shit," I said in disbelief. I looked at the chunks of meat left and looked back at him. He was looking away from me.
"Alastor?" I drew out his name. He sheepishly looked back at me, his ears pressed to the back of his head.
"Listen, I know you don't like it...but you've got to eat the medicine." He huffed and picked up the piece of meat with his medicine in it.
"Good job," He went right back into his enclosure when I opened the door. "I'll see you at dinner!" I yelled through the door. He barked back over his shoulder. I never knew an animal could be so expressive. I cleaned up the food plate and walked off, writing in my notebook as I did.
"James. Tour Duty." Kari called. I didn't look around for her and just ran up top. I placed my notebook in my pocket before lifting myself up on a small podium.
"Tour in five! Tour in five!" I began to chant. People circled around me, and before I knew it I had a small crowd.
"Howdy guys! I'm Dan and I'm gonna be your tour guide today! Let's start in the Avery, shall we? Remember, photos are allowed just please, no flash. If you have any questions, raise your hand and I'll get to you as soon as possible." We walked into the huge bird room, people took photos and I answered questions. Some people had a hawk placed on their hands.
"This here is a Red-Shouldered Hawk, did you know that they eat mammals and can eat something as big as a rabbit!" We continued over to the insect part of the zoo. A group of teenage girls squealed as they held a tarantula.
"That there is a red knee tarantula. They are one of the most docile breeds of tarantula but their bite is equivalent to a bee or wasp sting." The tour continued, we pit stopped at every animal. I was falling in love with this job more and more every day. But, every tour came to an end. Each one ended with the wolves.
"What we have here is our pack of gray wolfs," I looked down quickly, searching for Alastor. When I found him sitting directly in the middle, I smiled. "That there is our Alpha wolf, his name is Alastor." Like usually, someone asked what his name meant. I didn't like that his name meant tormentor. It didn't fit him. At least not to me, maybe to others.
"Wolves use howling to communicate with each other, and trust me when I say it gives you goosebumps." I nodded at Alastor, and just like we planned he started howling. It echoed off everything. It was a deep hollow sound. The females backed up their Alpha and howled with him, but you couldn't hear them over him. The group gasped in surprise and took plenty of photos and videos. I winked at Alastor, and it almost looked like he winked back. I'll have to write that down later.
"All right, I hope you folks enjoyed the tour! My name is Danny, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact us using our email, phone number, or you can visit our customer service desk. Thank ya'll for being an amazing group." The crowd dispersed and I started jotting things down in my notebook. The day continued and I did two more tours before dinner.
"Alastor, nice job on the howling buddy." He smiled at me as if he enjoyed to compliment. I heard the lions starting up their nightly roaring. Perfect timing. I poured his dinner into the food tray and he dug in.
"Hey, tomorrow is my day off. Promise me you'll still eat tomorrow?" I squatted in front of the fencing. I was told that he wouldn't like me being so close while he ate, but he doesn't seem to mind it. His eyes squinted at me.
"You can't not eat man." I crisscrossed apple sauced. He huffed and continued eating. As if to ignore me.
"And you have to eat your medicine." I raised a brow at him but he didn't look up at me. My eyes rolled before I pulled out my notebook. I turned to a new page and my hand started to sketch. Before I knew it, I had drawn Alastor. He was bent over his food like he is now.
"Huh, okay then." I shut it quickly, but his curiosity had already gotten the best of him. When I looked up at him, his face was pressed up against the fence and he was trying to see my book. I waved my finger back and forth at him.
"Ah ah ah, no sir." He let out a small whimper but continued eating. My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Lucas. I quickly looked around, but no one was in sight.
"Hey, what's up?" I answered. Alastor looked up, curiosity in his eyes. I swear, he was like a human.
"Hey! You answered," I chuckled and stood up, leaning against the wall. " I was just checking in if we were still on for tomorrow?" I smiled softly.
"I'm at work." I retort.
"Still? It's eight." I rolled my eyes and started playing with my hair.
"Yep, and about tomorrow...I don't see why not." I heard him celebrating on the other end.
"Great, it's a date." My face heated up.
"I have to go back to work, bye." I hung up before he got the chance to say goodbye.
"Sorry about th-" I went to apologize to Alastor, but I froze. For the first time, he looked angry. His muzzle was scrunched up and his fur was raised.
"Alastor?" He growled before turning and running out of the feeding pen. What was up with him? Was the medicine not working? He ate every bit of his food today, even the piece with the medicine in it. I scratched my head in confusion but shrugged it off. My shift was ending, all I had to do left was clean the feeding plate. Then, just like that my shift was over. Usually, I swung by the wolf pen upstairs to say bye to Alastor. But he wasn't out today. I wrote that down. Why was he suddenly acting so strange? But that was the last thing on my mind, I was concerned about what to wear tomorrow.
I ate dinner with the family and took a quick shower, I got through the whole night without anyone asking what my plans were for tomorrow. But I was scared of what hell Eliza would unleash. But I fell asleep with Daisy in a matter of seconds. Exhaustion was merciless tonight.
"You're what?!" I hid under my blanket, attempting to hide from the wrath of the curly-headed demon yelling at me. Good thing I waited tillafterbreakfast to tell her I was going on a date with Lucas, or she'd wake up the whole house."I can't let you go alone with that guy!" She screeched and I suddenly had a light bulb moment. I threw the blanket off me and tackled her to the floor. First, she yelped in surprise but then started hitting me."Eliza! I have a brilliant idea!" She scoffed in disbelief."You? Brilliant idea? You're going on a date with a complete stranger." I pouted and she raised her brow."He's not a complete stranger," I mumbled. "Anyway, why don't we go on a double date?!" Her eyes went wide for
I went through the morning routine on autopilot. I didn't mean to come off as expressionless, but the fog of questions made it that way. Thick with uncertainty, each question had no answer for me. Was the huge breed of wolf a new finding? Were they rare? A science experiment running lose? Why hasn't anyone heard of them other than Alastor? Why did they seem so...so there? Like they knew what they were doing. The wolf that had jumped in front of my car last night, his eyes seemed so full of knowledge.Toofull of knowledge. Not like an animal's eye. Like he knew too much. Just like Alastor. The huge black wolf who had taken an odd obsession toward me seemed to know too much as well. Like he could outsmart us all. But he's only an animal, an oversized dog. But the way the huge beast moved sometimes. To conscious. How he reacted as if he knew what was going on. Like he could understand our words. Understandmy
Monday and Tuesday passed too quickly. The only thing interesting was Jimpy-our most famous chimp- had a thankfully successful surgery. Wednesday I had off. My bones ached from working. Hauling pounds of meat and sweeping pens. I laid in bed after feeding and cleaning the animals at home. Eliza was sitting beside me on the floor. Her face was unreadable. Ever since Sunday, we hadn't talked about the wolf who jumped in front of our car. Honestly, I didn't want to have the conversation. It was stressing me out. Each day I went into work, Darby and his team would be parked along the road. They hadn't caught him. But the anxiety of not seeing them parked along the road one of these days was taking a toll on me. I wanted to be at work. Doing my routine so I didn't have time to think. I also wanted to nap. To lose myself with in the blankets. But Eliza wasn't having that. I could see it in her eyes when she looked up. An apology brewed in them.
I didn't want to go to work today. I wasn't sure for which reason though. Was I afraid of finding the second wolf in with Alastor? Was it because I was so exhausted from the nightmares that played with me last night like a rag doll? Or was it because a part of me was terrified about what Frank had said? What would I do if I went in and found a man sitting in Alastor's place? But as we finished up the morning chores and I ate through breakfast, chatting nonchalantly, the time still came for me to leave. I hugged everyone goodbye-even the dogs- as I tried to procrastinate. But I was eventually behind the wheel, driving down the long road. Something caught my eye and I found myself pulling over. The sun was barely rising, it kissed the top of trees and gave everything a light glow. If the sun wasn't up, I doubt I would have seen the tire tracks that scarred the pavement and went off into the ditch. I followed the black lines into the grass,
The following days passed without problem. I was getting used to my surroundings and didn't have to think much about what or where I was going. The news had finally left me alone, but people who recognized me from the channel would always ask me how I was. Kari and Carter had gone on a separate date of their own and from further investigation, I found out that they were clicking significantly. Gedeon and Alastor had changed in the past days as well. They were eating more and would rest more hours than normal. They would sit in the middle of the enclosure and stare at one another as if having a secret conversation. Their personalities became more closed off, but Alastor never stopped the unhidden concern for me and Gedeon didn't stop his odd stretching. I should tell the vet about that next time I bumped into him. On my way to town going down the same road as every other day, something felt off. I wasn't going to work, today was my day off
The zoo didn't reopen for a whole week. Even then the buzz had not calmed down and the news channels were going haywire. With work out for that week, I had nothing to do. I rode Badger a lot more than I thought I would have. Believe it or not, I was starting to get the hang of things and I could now ride him as he galloped. But when I went back to work, it felt lonely. Not having Alastor or Gedeon to pay most of my attention to, I found myself bored and without things to do. I would bother other staff members, attempting to aid them in anything they did. Kari had put me on intense tour guide duty and even had me start feeding the tigers on a normal basis. Don't get me wrong, Teddy and Cuddles were amazing tigers. The large cats would play around with each other and it was entertaining to watch. But I still felt like I had nothing to do. I was the wolf girl after all, but what was I when there were no wolves?
The sun was coming through the window at such an odd angle. Like it was the afternoon. The sun shouldn't be up at all right now, why hadn't Eliza woken me up for the morning farm chores? Had her alarm not gone off as well? I relished in that for a moment, allowing myself to revel in the extra hours of sleep I had gotten. But I still felt as if I had gotten up at four and worked my ass off and before that, I had gotten horrible sleep. My body felt weak and fatigued. When the sun pissed me off enough, I opened my eyes with a sigh of defeat. I sat up quickly in surprise. The room was huge. White marble flooring, dark wood walls, and floor to ceiling windows that overlooked a forest. I was laying in a large bed with thick white covers. There was a door that was cracked open, I could see the crystal marble sink of a bathroom. There were two other doors, I hoped one of them was an exit. There
"So let me get this straight- he lives in the middle of nowhere, has a huge house, and a staff?" Eliza asked again, still surprised by all the details I had given her. I nodded and she gushed. Frank hadn't spoken to me again this morning, he seemed to preoccupied, reading the newspaper like the font was too small. I didn't bother. There were other questions I wanted answers too. Like how Diesel knew about the wolves. Eliza went on with the questions. She growled when I told her about Jamie and Alma's bets. She laughed when I told her about Dakari. She seemed to like Diesel, she was grateful to him. Knowing that he saved me from a "bear attack." If only she knew what actually happened. As if he knew I was talking about him, my phone ringed with his number."Hello?" I whispered when I got far enough from Eliza."Hey there," he breathed ba
Diesel swooped me into his arms and spun me around. A cheerful laugh vibrating throughout his chest. He pulled back just enough to kiss me. People giggled and applauded around us which made my cheeks burn. Six months down the road, things were starting to get better. It's still hard when I think about her, and I wish she were here to see me become Luna, but I'm okay. I'm Luna now. Irma is so very proud of me. Diesel couldn't be happier. The pack's thoughts bouncing around my head couldn't be happier. I now got to lead beside him. His eyes sparkled when he looked down at me. He was the rest of my life. Everyone shifted - I climbed onto Alastor's back- and we took a few celebratory laps around the pack. This was it.
He re-wrapped my sliced hands and gave me a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. I was focusing on little things. Like how gently he held my hands. Was that a trait that was taught, or something from experience? Maybe he was born with it and that's why he went into this field. Why would anyone want to be a doctor? Having to experience all this sadness every day. I wanted to ask him, question after question to focus on something else other than this burning feeling in my chest. But I don't think I could anyway. My mouth was very dry."How are you doing Ms. James?" I nodded glumly which he frowned at. I stared at the wall, not wanting to look into his eyes. Diesel wrapped his arm around my waist and helped me to my feet. Penny barreled through the doors when we walked back into the waiting room. Her eyes were crazed, her face blotchy with tears. She saw me and sprinted to my side.
DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO GORE. SKIP TO ************Eliza flew across the intersection and landed on the opposite cross-walk, her body skipping in between the white lines. The shinny truck skidded to a stop, the smell of burnt tires filled the air. The commotion on the sidewalks halted instantly. An odd feeling filling the air, one I had never experienced. People's gasps of fear were loud, but the numerous amounts of people dialing 911 were louder. The glaring sun now watched behind thick clouds. The street was covered in shadows but her firey hair seemed to be like a lighthouse, laying in the middle of the road. A scream ripped through me. I clawed against Diesel's arms that were caged around me. Finally, he let me go when the man in the truck stepped out of his vehicle. The man looked surprised, his eyes wide with fear. I ran toward her motionles
The City was too packed to drive through so we left the car at the hotel and took out on foot. The tops of buildings were blurred by the sun and the sound of nature was completely obscured by honking cars, yelling drivers, and shuffling feet. You could also smell the difference in the air due to the pollution and the hundreds of lungs. We finally walked into a breakfast cafe, the smell of bakery was a new hit in the face compared to outside. Eliza, Diesel, and I slid into a booth and started up some casual conversation that was interrupted by a waitress."What would you girls like?" Diesel asked while sharing his menu with me. Eliza sucked on her teeth across from us while staring deeply into the menu."I'll take a coffee and a buttered bagel please," I said simply and Diesel seconded me.
The drive into town was long, I wasn't exactly sure where his cabin was even located. Eliza and I jammed in the back seat to whatever we commanded Diesel to put on. Which was mostly Disney music. I didn't know exactly what Kari was going to say when I got there but I think I could take an easy guess. Pulling in, Eliza was impossible to control and we lost her almost imminently. You couldn't keep that girl away from the rhino enclosure if you wanted to. Diesel and I ambled through the park and even with the incident almost a month behind us, people still stared at me. Diesel kept a hovering hand on my lower back and his brows were pushed down. Though questions bubbled at people's lips, no one approached. Brett-curious by the sudden silence of the crowd- turned from the Tazmanian Devil's and searched for the cause. His eyes rounded and a smile flitted across his face. He eyed Diesel and cautiously pulled me into a hug.
I woke up to warm hands around my face. I mumbled an incomprehensible response to which he chuckled. When I didn't open my eyes he stubbornly wrapped his arms around me and hoisted me off the bed at great speed. I let out a sound of surprise. When I was upside over his shoulder I finally could take a breath. I stared down at the white tile and panted in shock."Diesel!" I exasperated. He chuckled again before flipping me back over and holding me tight to his chest. My feet floated off the ground and my face was not an inch from him. His eyes were lit with excitement and his face was crinkled with a huge smile. Butterflies attacked my stomach and my heart dropped."Mon amour I want to apologize for last night's occurrences," his smile flattered and his eyes drifted to the floor. "Thing's have already been taken care of this morning. Thou
-Self-harm trigger warning-"Here we go!" Jamie said while yanking the zipper up my back. This dress was way too small for me. Why did I have to wear a dress anyway? I was just meeting everyone. Not like its a party. She cussed when the zipper halted halfway up my back."Suck it in Ms. Snicker!" She hissed. What does that even mean? I sucked in my stomach and when the zipper went all the way up, I let out a heavy breath. She spun me around and grinned at me. Then she sauntered from the room. I dared a peek in the mirror then regretted it immediately. I was trapped in a tight black dress. It stuck to me like a second skin. It was off the shoulder and the bottom reached mid-thigh. I grabbed the bottom and tugged it down self-consciously. I turned around and gasped softly. It was even shorter in the back. This dress showed my every flaw. B
Just like I thought, Diesel was sleeping beside me. I chuckled softly and ran my hand through his hair. His eyes slowly opened and a lazy smile lit his face."Good morning mon amour," he whispered."Mornin," his smile grew. After getting dressed Diesel and I walked downstairs and moaned at the smell of breakfast. Alma and Jamie were in the kitchen again."We made omelets," Alma said, not bothering to turn around."Have fun last night?" Jamie wiggled her brows. I stared at her confusingly before looking over to Diesel. He was glaring at her and his face was hot pink. He could read what she was thinking right? It clicked for me then when she wiggled her brows again."No no no no no!" I
Diesel was there when I woke up. His hand still wrapped around mine, his sleeping face next to my pillow, his body crouched beside the bed. I smiled softly. I squeezed my hand out of his successfully and stretched my body. My calf stung when I slid onto the ground.. But it didn't stop me from trying to shove Diesel onto the bed. After that failed, I crawled back onto the bed and tried pulling. I got him halfway up when Jamie peeked her head in with a raised brow. I laughed nervously when she snorted. She helped me get the rest of him on the bed and I lightly tucked him in. I pushed his hair from his face, smiling at how peaceful he looked. Jamie grabbed my hand and towed me from the room."We're making breakfast Luna, care to join?" She asked. Luna? I didn't question it. There was too much information I still needed to learn, I'll get it eventually. I nodded.
