Every member of the pack felt their Alpha's anger and grief. They didn't know what had happened but they all received the command to respond to the compound and meet at the dining hall. Those that worked jobs outside the compound immediately started calling in, explaining why they couldn't attend but giving the time they would arrive.
The dining hall was crowded with almost every pack member, adults and cubs alike. Jeff and his staff were attending to the injured and the families of the fallen in the hospital. There were small groups talking about what they knew, what they'd heard, and what they thought the Alpha was going to say to them. They noticed the missing families, but no one made any guesses about what had happened. They knew it must be bad.It had been at least a century since a Baxter Alpha had sent a mental command for a meeting of this magnitude. The older pack members knew it meant this was something that would impact all of their lives. Every memberCole was ready to leap over the table and rip out Thomas' throat. Carr glared at him, and he forced himself to remain seated. Karen looked at him lovingly and just her gaze was enough to calm him. He felt himself relax and smiled at his mate. She would stay with him he knew. Even if he tried to make her leave with the other females, he knew she'd refuse. She wouldn't want to put them in any danger."Thomas, I'm sorry for your loss, we all are. But Karen is Cole's mate, human or not. Her safety is as important as any other member of the pack. Whatever decision is made is mine, not yours. The safety of the whole pack is my responsibility, and I will carry out that responsibility without your further input.". He watched the Omega sit slowly down, his neighbors moving a little bit away from him, not wanting the Alpha to think they agreed with his outburst.Others throughout the room were nodding their heads. Carr was a strong Alpha. They'd trusted him with their lives
Sarah was stunned. This wasn't quite what she had expected to hear. Oh let's face it, she hadn't known what to expect, but this wasn't it. She could tell Karen believe everything she was saying. "Go on, tell me more.""Gary and Paul are insane Sarah. They killed two of Cole's people earlier today. They're running around loose, and I'm sure Paul will come for you. We need to keep you safe. The only place you'll be safe is with the pack. Ben and Nathan both joined Cole's pack. They happened to find their mates among Cole's pack. And I am Cole's mate. We were meant for each other. And soon we'll make it official. I'm kind of nervous about becoming a Werewolf, but I've never felt so at home." Karen waited for a reaction. But Sarah just stared at her."Then I guess I'd better pack some clothes. This certainly explains the weird dreams I've been having." Sarah got up and went to the closet to grab a suitcase."Dreams? You've been having dreams?" Karen was dumbst
"Then we need to mate, now. We may not get the chance later." She looked at him hopefully. She couldn't stand the waiting, and she didn't have a wolf prowling around inside her. She couldn't believe Cole had been able to hold back the last few days. "If Gary finds a way in here, if we aren't mated, he could take me away from you. Right?" She knew that would get a reaction from him.Cole's face turned to stone. "He will never have you Karen. Never. You belong to me."She could see the change in his eyes. His wolf was close. She raised her hand to his face and stroked his cheek. "Please Cole, I know I belong to you, and I want to belong to you forever. Please, let your wolf out to claim me. You won't hurt me."Cole gazed into her dark brown eyes and knew he'd never be able to hold back his wolf with her begging to be taken. "I don't want to hurt you pet. My wolf won't be gentle. Your wounds...""Just tell me what to expect Cole. Will I turn into a w
The front door was wide open, and the sound of glass breaking rang out across the neighborhood. Paul was furious. The house reeked of those pack dogs. He could tell they'd just left. And Sarah went with them. Bitch! She was his, and he wasn't going to give her up. Paul ripped the walls apart, tore down the bannister, broke every piece of furniture.Gary stood in the middle of the living room and let Paul take out his anger on the house. It was pretty much gutted, the same as those mutts would be when they met in battle. Gary smirked, picturing the bloody scene they would leave behind. And once the males were dead, it didn't matter if a female had been mated or not. He and his pack would have them. In ancient times one Alpha male would have several mates, not just one. He would sire cubs with as many females as possible. That was the way it should be. He had read the history of his kind when he'd studied in the Crane Alpha's library. The idiot didn't know he had found the se
Sarah watched the Red Tailed Hawk soar high above the trees and then laughed when the tiny little black birds swarmed it to chase it away from their nest. It was so wild here. Like a wilderness preserve. But that was on the other side of town. This was privately owned, by the pack. She looked out over the ridge and could see for miles. Deer dotted the hillsides. She wondered just how far out the pack owned. "Does it all belong to the pack? As far as I can see?"James stood behind her, leaning against a tree, arms crossed. He loved to just look at her. Her long hair was black as night, in contrast to her alabaster skin. The big blue eyes finished the picture of the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen in his life. "Most of it. What doesn't belong to the pack belongs to the Bureau of Land Management, so we won't have to ever worry about encroachment from civilization. Other than the compound, it's all pretty much the same as it was when the Alpha's grandfather brought the pack
Cole had returned to the dining room and was speaking to James and Sarah who had walked in with him. Cheryl managed to slip in next to him and put a possessive arm around his waist and said in her most seductive voice "Have you missed me baby?"The trio had shocked looks on their faces as did the rest of the room. Cole extricated himself from her embrace and backed away quickly. "I'm mated Cheryl, it's over, done, finished. We had fun. Move on."Karen watched as Cole backed away and pointedly told her they were through. Cheryl looked like she was trying to plead with him to reconsider. All Karen could think was "I don't think so!" She quietly strode to the group, a low growl heard as she grabbed Cheryl by the elbow, pulled her away from her mate and punched her square in the face. The power behind the punch was what surprised them the most. Cheryl's body went skittering across the slick floor and slammed into a wall.Cheryl was stunned for a moment and the
"Alpha, we didn't know what to do. With Gary and Paul loose, we were afraid for their safety. Ben and I hope you understand why we brought them here." Nathan faced his new Alpha, knowing he may have gone too far by bringing outsiders to his new home, but they really had no choice. When he had discussed it with Lila, it'd seemed so logical at the time. But now, looking at Carr's face, maybe they should have asked for permission first.Carr took a deep breath before saying a word. What Nathan and Ben had done would have been unheard of for one of his pack, but he did understand. But Lila knew about it and certainly knew better. Lee would be having a talk with her later. "I do understand. You were right to bring them here Nathan. Ladies," Carr was addressing the two human females seated in front of him, "I hope we can make you feel at home here. Karen and Sarah will see to your needs while you're with us. Along with Nathan and Ben and their mates."The two women nodde
Brett stared up at the tree, spotting the camera nestled between branches. "Damn it, why didn't anyone report this sooner?" He watched one of his security detail climbing a ladder to reposition the camera so that it pointed to the exit of the labyrinths like it was supposed to. Didn't do much good to have security cameras that were misdirected. Not that it would have mattered for Gary and Paul's escape. But it would now."Brett." His name crackled over the radio."Go." Brett answered quickly, his head cocked to the side as he listened through his earpiece."We spotted someone watching the exit road from the compound. We've taken him into custody and brought him in. Cole's on his way to the office. He wants you there too.""On my way." He spun around to head back to the compound, yelling over his shoulder at Bryant, "Make sure every single camera is checked to be sure it's working at top efficiency and pointed at the correct angle. I don't want any

The male hunters had returned to the clearing with their kills. They had several deer, a few boar, and an enormous elk. They dragged them over to the Omegas waiting near the fire who would take over the preparation for the meals.Carr congratulated the Betas on a fine take. They howled in unison at the compliment. Those who were un-mated ran off to find a companion for the evening. Those who's mates were still hunting watched to the south for the pack to return.Carr felt Cole's agitation. He could see him pacing, he just couldn't seem to hold still. "She's fine, Cole. If something had happened, I would know." The wolf looked up at him, nodded his head, and walked to the edge of the clearing, and waited.Carr shook his head as he found Lee. "Over-protective.""Oh and when I led my first hunt you weren't worried at all? I heard from Cole later that he had to stop you from coming to look for us." She stood, arms crossed, with a stern look at her mat
Guillame watched Katy and Rhys and for a second was consumed with jealousy. But this was not Orsolya. There was no reason for jealousy. But she was just as beautiful and it made him miss his mate even more. He was so intent on watching them he didn't notice the female who approached him from behind.Julia leaned in close and whispered in Guillame's ear. "I decided to stay behind in case you wanted to..." She never ended the sentence but reached out her tongue and flicked it along the shell of his ear.He turned and his eyes roamed up and down her beautiful body. She had already discarded her clothing. "A run would be invigorating." He quickly disrobed and shifted, waiting for the female, and then took off at a dead run through the woods. He led and he had no idea where he was going, but he was glad to be away from Katy and Rhys. It was difficult to watch them together now. His head knew it wasn't her, but his heart was aching. Maybe Julia could help him to tak
Karen had thought she'd have no idea what to do on this hunt. But Cole and Lila had been right, her wolf knew what to do. As soon as they were away from the larger group, she picked up the scent of an animal. A deer she thought. Lila noticed it too. They took off like a shot through the forest. From the staleness of the scent it must have been about twenty minutes ahead of them. The group ran as a pack until Karen stopped. The deer was up ahead. It was a six point buck. He was huge. The pack fanned out upwind of the deer. Karen and Lila would attack from the one opening left. If the deer smelled them he had no where to run where he wouldn't be met by one of the wolves. Once the buck was circled the females slowly started to close in. They crawled on their bellies through the grass. Karen and Lila were far enough out of the circle for the buck to think he had an avenue of escape. The buck heard something. His head came up and he scented the air. Wolves! The odor was
"Alistair, may we talk?" Sandalio was waiting for the white haired Were as he walked back to the main house."Of course, how may I help you?"The two Weres were an interesting sight, one with snow white hair, the other jet black, but both tall and athletic. They walked into the house and scouted around for an empty room to talk in private. Not finding one, Alistair led the way to his room.He closed the door and turned to speak to the Were he expected to be the next Head of the Council. "What did you want to speak about Sandalio?" He motioned for him to sit at the desk chair while he sat at the end of the bed."The women." He saw Alistair's jaw tighten and his hand came up to calm him. "I am not on Rudolf's side Alistair. I want to talk about their future. I think Xylon was right, they are the future of our race. And I know that we can only allow a select few to become panthers. Right now that is an easy thing to control. I've been told the women
"How are you feeling? Much pain?" Logan was doing a last check on the splint placed on the forearm of the Czech Council Member. He was an impressive Were, as big as Rhys, and as polite."Not much pain, thank you Doctor. I'm sure I will heal quickly. I just hope the scars don't scare away the females." He winked at the Doctor but was suddenly distracted by the most amazing scent of sandalwood and carnations."Ah, no mate huh? I remember those days." He smiled as he turned around to look at Trina. She looked back at him with a frown as he added, "And I'm glad they're over." He grinned as she stuck out her tongue and walked down the hall.Logan realized Konstantin's attention had been diverted to the doorway. The intensity of his gaze had Logan interested. He turned and saw the blond head ducking away. He smiled back at Konstantin. "Just a sec, I think you had a visitor." He walked out and spotted a small blond figure dashing down the hallway. He saw her runn
The North American Council waited patiently in the dining hall. If the Europeans thought they would have a say in the goings on in one of their packs they would learn a hard lesson. They had no say here.Carr watched the convoy of cars being escorted by his Betas. Cole and Brett led them to the main house where the cars parked. The Baxter Betas outnumbered the Europeans and their entourage. They may be the same species but there was no love lost between the Europeans and Americans and very little trust. They had no business being here without being invited. Carr vowed to be polite but firm. This was his pack, his lands, his right to refuse their request to stay if he so decided.Rhys and Alistair stood next to Carr. They were sure what this was about and knew their own council would back them up. And they would have Guillame on their side. The Head of the European Council stepped out of the car and looked briefly around the compound. He stood there in his
A short half hour later Cole smiled as he took Becky's arm and walked her to the Alpha's office. She looked scared to death. You'd think she was going to the gallows instead of to meet her mate. He'd have to talk to Carr and Lee about explaining mating to some of the younger pack members. They all just assumed it didn't happen until you were in your hundreds. As they walked past the dining hall all eyes were riveted on Becky. Everyone knew something was up. They'd seen the visitors go to the office with the Alpha. They'd all felt the Alpha's rage. And then they saw Cole grinning on his way to the Omega quarters. And now here he was coming back with Becky. What was going on?"Ready?" Cole looked at Becky's petrified face and smiled. Cole walked through first and waited for Becky to follow. He laughed to himself as she looked at the floor and quickly went to stand with Lee.Lee smiled and put an arm around the Omega. She leaned over to whisper. "You'll be fi
Julia watched Guillame intently for any sign of recognition. He never looked up. He'd remember her later tonight. She smiled to herself as she thought of the hunt tonight. This would be a whole lot of fun. She chatted with her friends, watching the Alpha's table and his guest intently.Andrea was sitting quietly with the Omegas, barely eating her food. She glanced up for a second when the visitors arrived and hoped they would join her but of course they sat with the Alphas. How silly of her. Of course he would have forgotten about their conversation. He was just being kind last night. But when she saw them leave with the Alpha she was hopeful they were leaving to talk about her.As soon as the office door closed Carr turned to face the two visitors. "OK Guillame, what did you need to talk about?""There are two things. First..."He was cut short by a knock at the door."Come in." Carr plopped down behind his desk. He couldn't wait for the
