"Victor..."

He appeared harried, hair out of place and glasses crooked. He only had on his jacket and an old pair of sweatpants; feet bare.

Enora's sharp intake of breath broke the silence. Their bodies were pulled into an embrace by an invisible force; his arms crushed her like they had never done before, as if they would hold onto her forever. A new wave of emotions erupted in her, and it made her pull back to look at him. His body was littered in scratches, bits of dried blood smeared everywhere as well.

She gasped, "You're hurt!" She was about to get supplies, when his hold kept her there and the cuts began changing, moving. They disappeared before her eyes, completely healed, and she felt herself step back, the chill from earlier returning in full force.

Victor's features softened and hardened in the same instance, when he looked from her to Gil, as if just remembering he was supposed to be there. He scanned the room, giving them both an observant up and down before landing on the other man.

"You're dismissed. I'll see you later."

Gil nodded in confirmation, grabbing his things from the couch and giving Enora a small, encouraging smile before exiting.

"I asked him to stay inside" she voiced with an annoyed scoff, momentarily distracted.

She made her way into the kitchen where she opened the cabinet to grab a bag of vanilla flavored coffee, her hands shaking uncontrollably. A stream of early morning sunlight crept in through the gap in the curtains and shone across Victor's face, highlighting his eyes. Honey colored once again.

"Enora, I..." he began.

The ice in her body was starting to burn, crystalizing all over her skin, "What? You what, Victor?! If that's even your real name."

"It is. I wouldn't lie about that–"

"Oh! Not about that, but about everything else?! That's great." she snapped sarcastically.

He took a breath, giving her a look that made her pause, "I didn't come here to fight, Nuoli." He took the coffee bag from her as she could barely get a spoonful out and prepared it.

Her shoulders relaxed. The way he would say her nickname: Norrie, in Mandarin, never failed to make her soften, and he knew that.

"I don't want to fight either. Why do you think I'm making coffee? I'm owed an explanation and we're staying up for as long as it takes, right?" she shrugged.

"Of course." he answered simply.

Once in the living room, Enora was a bundle of nerves. She found herself wishing she wasn't in this situation. That time would reverse itself and stick to the script of her normal every day, like it was yesterday. There would be no fear or hurt. The man in front of her would be the same as before, familiar and honest, not a stranger.

"Where do you want me to start?" he asked, interrupting her thoughts.

"Um..." She felt her mouth dry up.

"I want you to know, I didn't do this on purpose, revealing it in this way was never the plan. Circumstances led to that split second decision." He collapsed onto the couch with his head in his hands. Enora went into her bedroom to grab one of the countless sweaters she's stolen from him and offered it. She could tell he wanted to laugh.

"I knew that rogue. He was exiled from my pack a year ago, before I became the Alpha. He was a rule breaker, but to get to this state... something else must have happened. Either way, it became my responsibility to act."

She thought back to what Gil had said and wondered how much more pressure it was for Victor as the leader.

"I also wanted to tell you sooner, but the time wasn't right." He began, hands itching to hold hers. "No, I had the opportunity but I... I stopped myself."

"Then it was deliberate..." she whispered; voice small.

"No! Well, yes. But mostly no," he interjected quickly, this time unable to stop himself from taking her hands in his.

"My rule is to wait the first month in order to determine if the dating is serious or not. Shifters and humans may be common nowadays, but you know it isn't completely accepted."

She nodded, looking down at their hands rather than at him.

"So, when the first month came around and you mentioned never wanting to date a shifter, I... I didn't know what to do."

Enora's head snapped up at this. She had almost forgotten about that day. Victor had intervened when an older man was harassing a young shifter and human couple. He deescalated the situation by convincing the man to walk away, the couple thanking him profusely for it. And as they walked away, Enora overheard the human tell the shifter to be more careful with his eyes.

The most obvious way to tell shifters apart from humans were their eyes. They were reflective, shiny like a piece of aluminum foil, no matter the color. Though there were rare individuals with wild or shocking colors, most were your common, everyday colors. Enora had never seen Victor's eyes reflect, but then shifters had the ability to conceal that, so the fault was hers for not thinking of that possibility.

Once the couple were out of earshot, Enora had said that she was glad she'd never be in that situation. She knew it would be harder for her than most, so avoidance was the obvious option.

She looked at Victor, unsure of what to say.

"It doesn't excuse my selfishness, I know, but I liked you more than I thought. And when I told myself to break up with you tomorrow, tomorrow never came."

Enora stood up, moving away from him.

"But you took away my choice, Victor. I don't know how to feel about that." she answered honestly. It was hard to imagine what her current situation would be if he had thought to let her choose. She didn't regret their past few months, but she couldn't make her negative feelings go away so easily either.

"I thought of the outcome every day and I knew it would make things harder. I won't lie and pretend I don't hope for this to work out; that you'll stay with me."

The words tugged at her heart; perhaps she could get over this. With time to process and reasoning with her own guilt, this could work, right? She loves this man...

"Which leads to my next confession," he continued in a grave voice.

"I've put you in danger Enora because it's not just a rival pack that may be after you, but a... mafia."

She blinked, feeling her body tense up. "I'm sorry, what?" she questioned, thinking she must have heard him incorrectly. He took a tentative step towards her, "I'm both an alpha and boss because our pack follows mafia law as well. It's a long story because of my grandfather–" "No. Stop! You're not serious right now." When he didn't answer, she felt all senses of control leave her being. It was going too far. How was she supposed to take this? "No, no! This is–Victor, what the f*ck?!" she heard someone yell. It must have been her voice, but it didn't sound right to her. Victor extended a hand towards her, but her body recoiled from it. "It was for your safety." he began. "Bull! Safety would be my knowing about it so I could practice some precaution. Or, I don't know, not be involved in a life I didn't choose!" A sudden dread encompassed her and she found her eyes flitting to the window in paranoia. How much did this rival know? Mafia usually know everything, and shifters have a

This was where she drew the line. The short amount of time she had spent with Gil was overwhelming enough, and now he wanted her to do that, times ten? No way. This may be the life he was used to, but she was not. "What do you mean? Stop what?" he asked. "I don't want ten bodyguards. I've only had a few hours to understand this, and you expect me to jump in straight? No questions asked?" "This is about your safety. You don't know who you're dealing with Enora, he'll do whatever he wants! And he's laying low because of that!" he shouted. "That's my point, Vic. I don't know anything. Thus, why surrounding me with what he knows best, only puts me further on his radar." Victor threw his hands up in frustration, pacing back and forth and looking at her incredulously. "That's not how this works. Once he knows where you are or tries something once, that's it. So, the more people with you the better. Which you don't seem to understand." "And whose fault is that?" she snapped, fingers p

Enora hummed along to the song wafting through the speakers of the cafe; its classic tune had some of the customers singing passionately and jovially. Even some of the dogs joined in with little yips and howls. She laughed while looking for something to keep her busy. Lately, her good moods were fleeting and bland. Although being at Pawsitivity Time made her happy, there was no ignoring the obvious emptiness in her life. Victor was the sunshine of her day that she'd never realized was so cloudy. "You chose this Enora. No use in obsessing over a done deal," she voiced aloud, hands absently rearranging glasses on the shelves. It was after lunchtime, meaning there wasn't much to do until the next hoard came in. Enora decided on taking a breather in her favorite spot in the cafe. Sunlight streamed inside indirectly because of the surrounding buildings, so there were certain spots where it glaringly blinded you, but she found it perfect for napping. It also had the most plants surround

"Ok Enora, just calm down. Maybe this isn't something bad," she said aloud to herself. The air felt heavy. Goosebumps crawled up her body and made her tremble. The box was a dark wood with a hinge and latch on the top. Her name and cafe address were typed in a creepy, thin font that was too small for the label. Until now, Enora's paranoia had been low. Not that she wasn't afraid, but after the first three days of being transported back and forth in black SUVs and getting used to the new routine, she was able to relax. And aside from the excessively expensive things being used for her, life was still ordinary. There were no mysterious people jumping out to scare her, no threatening letters in her mailbox, or suspicious cars tailing them. In this moment however, things felt far from normal. What if this was Victor's rival making his move? What came next if it was? What if this was a distraction and Victor was going to be ambushed? She hurried to the front of the café where Gil and

She found herself humming and dancing as she finished getting ready for the party. As she had planned to have the café close earlier than usual today, it gave her ample time to return home. The drive was about forty-five minutes from her place, and she liked being on time. "Wow, you clean up nice," Enora complimented. Gil stepped out of the bathroom in his masquerade attire, looking effortlessly cool in it. He shrugged as he observed himself in the mirror on her bedroom door, and answered shyly, "You think so?" "Of course. I wouldn't lie about that." "You sure this isn't a ruse to get on my good side because I'm mad at you?" She put her hands up in defense, "Hey, I said I was sorry! I'm not purposely forcing you to go. You have to be my plus one since Victor isn't here." "He owes me for this. I hate parties," he mumbled angrily. "Me too. Guess we can awkwardly be there together," she replied. He released a sigh, "At least the theme is cool." "That's the spirit!" Enora tr

"I hope you enjoyed the party; you shall not be rejoining." His mask looked creepier in this light; one of those ugly, full faced masquerade ones with the protruding lower half. It muffled his voice so she couldn't tell if she recognized it or not. She scanned the room. They were in a storage room with old furniture and paintings. A box with what she assumed were antiques, sat to her right and she noticed a number of them were silver. Her hand inched towards the purse hanging low on her hips when he put a hand up, "Ah, ah, ah. We shall have none of that." A slight pain went up her leg when she got to her feet. Meaning, it would be a problem when it came time for her to escape. If she were to escape. "I must admit that I expected more of you. The way Alpha is so enamored, you would think you were the perfect Luna." She swallowed thickly, "Should I apologize for disappointing you?" He gave a dry laugh, "Ah, maybe it is your attitude he likes. I can see the appeal, but it does not

Caitlyn and Nadine hastened down the hall towards Enora who was being examined by a pack medic. She tried to call out to them, but the gauze in her mouth muffled her words. "Oh my gosh what happened?!" Caitlyn yelled as she got closer. "Allen! Send everyone home! The party's over!" Her husband shouted a confirmation and cut off the music moments later. "Enora! What–!" Nadine began, putting her hands to her mouth in horror. Enora was about to answer again, when the door opened to reveal the stranger being carried out. A quick scan of his body showed no wounds and his chest moved, but he was unconscious. "Who is that?! He attacked you?! And how did these guys get here so fast?!" Caitlyn shouted again, seeing the state of her friend. The sleeve on Enora's dress had been torn and her hair had fallen out of its bun. Her face was sore and swelling; mouth slightly bleeding from where her gums were cut. This was definitely not good. Gil stepped in beside them, "These are old cop buddie

The night had grown windy; their steps harsh on the stone path. She followed Victor to the car so she could speak to him out of earshot of the others. He didn't look at her as he opened the trunk to retrieve a backpack, "I'm not letting you out of my sight tonight. There's nothing to discuss." "But isn't it your duty to be there? And we're still..." she was unsure of how to finish. "My duty is also to my–" he said, voice rising. "You are my priority because you were in danger. Besides, it's because of times like these, that I have two others in charge. They'll relay all of the information I need to know." Enora let out a long sigh, "Then I'm wasting my time." "I told you. Enora panted as she crouched down once more. Pressing her back against the wall, she followed it around to the side where a car on the street would serve as cover. Her legs hurt and her hands shook uncontrollably as she texted Gil and Wilson her whereabouts. "Please one of you pick up. Or please find Victor, please," she whispered to herself. Thankfully during her escape, she hadn't encountered anyone else, and the exit had led her through an alleyway and onto the main streets. Several sirens played on the soundtrack for the night; after the gunshots had finally ceased and the sounds of struggles had subsided. Closing her eyes, she tuned to the background noise, hoping to hear something or someone familiar. Her mind wouldn't stop flashing possible scenarios where Victor didn't walk out of that building and back into her arms, and that scared her. Curling into herself, she rocked back and forth, working to breathe through the severe agony, fury, and sorrow she and Victor were cycl

ONE HOUR AGO Victor's phone buzzed in his pocket, knowing it was Enora before he checked at the screen. As soon as they were within a few minutes of the Quercia base, he'd absorbed her fear to a maximum level. She'd been ok for the majority of the day, so this could only mean true peril was looming over her. Her text informed him that she was inside Bianchi's apartment, about to have dinner with him and she would try to stall for as long as possible. The suspicious feeling was shared between them as he tossed the phone into the bushes and went to get into position with the others. "You two stay alive. I won't forgive you if you dare die on me," Wilson said, hitting Victor and Gil on the back. Gil laughed, "You're the human here. We should be saying that to you." "Ha! You think these untrained losers have anything on me? I'll take them all out in no time." "We'll see about that. You'll still be fighting by the time Gil, Enora, and I come out," Victor said with a smirk. "Ah, fin

There were clothes on the bed when Enora returned to the bedroom; from pajamas to bathing suits, to underwear and dresses, and a shiver ran down her spine at the thought of what Alessandro might be thinking about. "I have another request to ask of you ladies," she began, pretending to enjoy the variety of clothing by holding them up against herself. "Yes, Miss?" they replied in unison. "If you could just wait outside while I rest, that would be great. I was startled before when I woke, and you were standing there. I scare easily, sorry." "Oh! I apologize, I was told to watch and wait, so I suppose I took it quite literally," woman A said, hanging her head in embarrassment. "No, no. Don't be. I probably would have done the same," Enora chuckled. "Thank you. You're too kind Miss. We will be right outside. You need only knock, and we or the guards will open the door." "We can put those away for you first," woman B offered, gesturing to the clothes. "Don't worry yourselves, I've g

Once she'd eaten her fill, she was unsure of how to get anyone's attention. It felt gross to ring the bell to summon people, so she went to the living room door instead, startled when the two women magically appeared in her path. "Miss, have you finished?" woman B asked. "Yes, thank you. Would you both mind if I explored the apartment? A–Alessandro said it was alright with him," she said, hating that she had to speak his name. "You do not need to ask us, you may simply command us to do what you would like," woman A added. "Oh, um. I can't actually. That also makes me uncomfortable. I'd prefer we be friendly," Enora answered sheepishly. The two looked from one another to Enora with questionable expressions. Has no one ever been nice to them? Or had she said something wrong? "Whatever you say Miss. Would you like to see the kitchen?" "Maybe later, I don't want to be in the way as the staff goes back and forth." "Ok, follow us then and we'll start with the living room. AT QUERCIA HEADQUARTERS The lengthy walk to the dining room was nerve-wracking; she was not ready nor willing to face Alessandro again. Another woman had joined Enora in the room when she'd exited the bathroom in one of the outfits that had been provided. It wasn't bad per say, but it was less modest than she was used to. They'd told her she looked great however, and announced breakfast was ready. Guards were outside of her room, unsurprisingly, and at every doorway of the apartment it seemed. As if she were stupid enough to attempt an escape. This place was completely unfamiliar to her, and it was the enemy base; even if she managed to reach the rest of the building, where would she hide? "You may have a seat here, Mr. Bianchi shall be in shortly," woman A said, breaking her out of her thoughts. Both women had refused to give her their names, explaining it was not in Bianchi's orders and they weren't important enough to be addressed that way. So, woman A and woman B would have to

Sunlight coming in through the window woke Enora, her eyes squinted and fought to open against its harshness. Turning away from it instead, she jumped from fright at the sight of a woman staring at her from across the room. "Ah, Miss, you're awake. Good morning," she greeted. "Um, hello. Where am I?" Enora asked politely, though she had a feeling that she already knew the answer. "At Quercia headquarters of course. The Boss is delighted to have you here as his guest." "I'm sure that psycho is beyond delighted," she said under her breath. "I'm sorry, what was that?" the woman asked. "I said, I'm happy to be here. So, what am I to do now?" "We shall prepare a bath for you and show you the clothes the Boss has chosen for you, so that you may join him for breakfast. Wait here for a minute." Hm, clothes? Looking down at herself, she found ripped and dirty clothing; it looked like she'd been trying to escape them for days, as opposed to twenty minutes. Oh. "Sure." The woman stepped

A struggle could be heard after a second shot went off, and Enora's sleeve was pulled on from behind. "Miss, we have to go. Come on!" They ran towards the end of the street where she said another SUV would pull up at any moment. From the side, a man jumped out at them, grabbing onto Enora while she struggled against him, and the guard stepped in with a right hook to his jaw. "The car is there, run!" The car came to a screeching halt and two out of the four people ran towards her, only to be cut off by more of Bianchi's men. "Oh, come on! How many of these clowns are there?!" she yelled out, looking around for some sort of weapon. A broken umbrella stuck out of one the dumpsters she passed, and she figured it would have to suffice. Swinging it around wildly, she managed to get one on the side of the head and hit his eye. With a scream, he stumbled and gave an opening for a Lotus to get him to the ground and knock him unconscious. They helped her get to the car while dodging swin

Davide slouched against the elevator wall, blowing the bangs out of his eyes and hanging his head. He could admit that Alessandro had been acting a bit out of sorts, and he was quick to shut down others' questions, but this was different. Who would've thought the day would come when he would question his Alpha's sanity? By an odd coincidence, the men he was on his way to retrieve for testing, were waiting when he stepped off the elevator. "Anderson, Marino, and Rojas, perfect, you're up for a promotion in rank. Need you to run the trials first, let's go." "Sure, we can do that, but we were wondering if we could have a word with you first," Rojas said. Davide sighed, "As long as we walk and talk, fine. What's this about?" "The boss," Anderson replied. "We haven't seen him in days, which is odd." "And this isn't the first time either. Too many of us have noticed something is going on and it isn't good," Marino continued. "What are you trying to say here? Questioning our leader?

SUNDAY EVENING, LOTUS HEADQUARTERS Several wolves circled the alpha in the center of the arena, mapping out their steps and timing their attacks. As others lay on the sidelines in exhaustion, Victor moved about in anticipation of attacks with infinite energy; vigor running high. Signaling for three to come forward, he dodged the first with a sidestep, the next with a bob and weave that left her neck open, and the third with a jump forward. Getting around them, he nipped them each in vital take down points, which tapped them out and sent them to do ten laps around the field. "I continue to reiterate the importance of speed. Your power matters once you know your opponent will and can be taken down," Victor stated to the group. Another three charged at him and he waited until the last moment to drop and roll beneath, tripping the second who remained on the ground, open to a bite at the base of their throat. From behind the other two, Victor jumped onto one's back to smash them into t
