Michael’s face paled at her father’s words and looked towards her with fright in his eyes. Their last bought had not ended in his favour, his scared face was a testament to that. He shifted on his feet as his beast lurked below the surface. She could see the gears in his head turning as he searched for an exit to the situation.

She watched as the veins in his arms bulged and his muscles clenched in his attempts to hold it off. He had lost his composure completely. She wondered if any of the Alpha’s were still worthy of their titles. If Michael was the strongest of them, he was a sorry excuse.

She began to circle him, walking slowly around him, stalking. He turned his head to follow her movements, watching her carefully. She sensed every emotion that poured off of him. Fear, Anger, Nervousness. He was a wild animal trapped in a cage.

She was his jailer.

He knew all too well the destruction she could bring. She’d promised him that she would be his reaper. Her claws unfurled at the thought as she bared her teeth at him.

She came back to stand before him, letting him gaze at her, before his end. It had been no mistake that he had plans for her. To use her as they did before.

Never again.

“Skin or fur,” She growled out between her beast’s teeth.

Her father hummed in his throat beside her, she could feel the delight coming off of him. His pleased tone showing the inner viciousness his wolf held. He was thriving on the challenge, thriving on the battle for dominance. He was like a man revived; she saw a spark back in his eyes as he stood calmly with his hands behind his back.

“Skin,” He commanded.

She smiled and her eyes brightened in anticipation at his words. Her father had ruled in her favour, just as she had known he would. She rolled her shoulders, loosening them as her body hummed with her dominance. Her power as a strong born wolf.

She allowed a few sparing seconds after her father’s words before she shifted her footing to pounce.

“Wait!” She halted at the shout.

Her eyes narrowed on Michael as he held up a hand. His nervousness had turned to smugness, the gears she knew were turning in his head grinding to a halt.

The air grew still at his words as she eased her stance, glaring at him from across the space between them. Her beast began to pace in her mind as she growled under her breath, he was stalling. The cold breeze that drifted through the clearing did nothing to cool her fiery blood. Her fixed gaze didn’t leave his form as she watched him with suspicion.

He turned towards her father and the other Alpha’s, almost giving her his back, as a sign of dismissal at their challenge. She fumed internally at his ignorance before tuning her ears to listen to what he had to say.

“If I remember correctly, I also have the right to a champion.” He declared.

Her father laughed at his tenacity to hold onto his life. He had turned from the strong Alpha he once was, renowned for his battles in the pack wars, to a mere rabbit clinging onto life in the wild. She didn’t understand the weakening within the Alpha’s, they had never seemed so powerless. Powerful wolves were out there, they just needed to be found. A change in power was needed.

“Coward,” She spat at him, her hair falling into her eyes as she resisted the urge to pounce at him.

“My son will take my place; he must prove his worth,” He declared.

He ignored her insult as he made his way towards the crowd. He reached his arm in and pulled a young male from the crowd by the collar of his shirt. He dragged him along, the young male trying to resist as his father pushed him into the circle that had been created.

He had a slender build, the build of a tracker, rather than an Alpha. The sinew in his muscles held definition and his tanned skin, like most were, showed he spent most of his time outdoors. His eyes, however, were the brightest of blue’s, molten sapphires that held defeat in their clutches. His shoulders were sagged forward and his head held low enough for his mop of black hair to cover his face.

His position was submissive, and his eyes spoke droves of the treatment he had undertaken from his father. A tortured soul.

She wondered if he truly realised the tortures of his world.

“Stand, boy,” Michael commanded roughly.

Adelaide turned her head to him, watching the smugness on his face. What father would happily give up his son for slaughter? Not any strong man she knew. The thirst for power with a weakening wolf was much like the greed of money the humans had before their extinction. Pitiful.

She watched as the ‘boy’ stood. His feet scrapped across the ground as he tried to pull his shoulders back. He was welcoming death, a release from his coward of a father. She wiggled her fingers as she waited, her wolf bored of the delays.

As she did so his eyes drew to her claws, clicking against one another, and his heartbeat sped up in his chest. His breathing uneven. Fear was an easy emotion to process in such a situation.

She pitied him really, her beast craved for blood like a warrior on the battlefield, she would try to make his death swift.

“Beware, Adam,” Her father warned.

Her father’s words were soft, she could sense the care in his tone. Looking at the young male brought images she quickly pushed away. A reminder of a sombre past for herself and her father. Her father never liked unnecessary death, he believed in life itself. For a father, an Alpha, to give up his child was a disgrace to his name, she was surprised her father had managed to remain calm.

At her father’s words of her beast’s violent nature the male stiffened and his eyes widened. He understood the danger he now faced. She began to circle again, her posture relaxed but her dominance still filled the air. He folded into himself slightly as she stepped closer to him, a small breath of air between them.

He was an attractive male, she had to admit, but did nothing to interest herself or her beast. They needed a male to match their own urges and indulgences, a strong male. She was worried she’d rip right through the male if she clawed him.

“Adelaide,” Her father urged.

His torso was bare, his shirt ripped off by his father for his execution. She paid closer attention to his skin as she assessed him, silence surrounding them. He was heavily scarred for a male that had never seen war, the only other reason could be that he was a fighter, but she severely doubted that. Michael was even more of a coward that she had first thought.

She came to a stop behind him, breathing down his neck as her claws danced across his throat. Her other handheld his arm still, keeping him in place as she brought her lips to his ear.

“Should I tell you of the sins your father has committed?” She spoke lowly, eerily calm.

The other Alpha’s shifted at her tone, picking up her words with ease across the space. She turned the male towards his father as she did so, he held no resistance against her. His skin was warm against her cold and he smelt of a heavy musk that couldn’t be replicated by perfumes, it was alluring.

His heartbeat slowed in his chest as he sensed his end, his perception of time slowing to match his situation. He thought that she was going to rip his throat out.

She kicked his knee’s out from him, her beast salivating in anticipation as she gripped the back of his neck and his shoulder. Grounding him in the earth below them. He made no sound, he didn’t beg for his life, she had to commend him for that. He held honour.

“I’ll show you instead.”

Her claws sunk into his shoulder and the back of his neck, sucking them both into a void where their minds melded together. His thoughts and memories raced across her vision as he became accustomed to the connection, their physical bodies freezing in place.

She focused her mind as she replayed her memories to him. He felt everything through her, every wound, every death. He watched as she scarred his father’s face for his actions, saw her as she truly was. The beast unfurled because of his father.

Her claws retracted from his neck as she broke the connection between them, locking the door to her mind. He hunched forward on his hands as he struggled for breath. The first experience was always the worst. An invasion of the mind was common to wolves, telepathic links were what bound packs together but the Mente Compartida was a much more dangerous ritual.

She looked to her father and nodded her head, he nodded back in understanding before turning. She faced the Alpha’s, equal looks of anger and fear in their eyes at the forgotten challenge.

She ignored them and turned back to the male who kneeled before her.

“I have shown you mercy. More than your father ever gave to my people,” She said to him.

He met her eyes and sucked in a breath as their gazes connected. Silver and sapphire blue. Her beast locked tightly away under her skin, pushed to the back of her mind. She walked past him and let her hand land back onto his shoulder where her claws had marred his skin.

“Fight to survive, Were. The Goddess has plans for you,” She told him.

She dragged her claws across his skin as she walked away, making him cry out for the first time since their meeting. She left his shoulder with a bloody crescent moon shaped around his shoulder.

The Moon had marked him as her own, his time would come.

She continued walking after her father, into the woods as the Alpha’s roared behind her in trepidation and relief. While others howled in anger.

Their leaders had returned but the war was far from over.

“The male.”Adelaide continued to move swiftly through the forest at a fast walk as her father strolled behind her. She let her eyes wander over various trees and plants as she looked for the signs that pointed them into the right direction. Her breathing deep as her mind thought internally to lock away the beast that had almost slipped.“What about him?” She asked. She picked some bark from a nearby tree, rubbing the coarse material between her fingers. She took a deep lungful of breath as she brought it to her nose, taking in the scent she was searching for.“You spared him.”Her father had stopped to lean against a tree as he regarded her, chewing on a stem of grass that rested between his lips. She stopped in her search, letting the bark drop to the forest floor with a soft crunch, before turning to her father with a sigh. All would find it questionable that she had spared the young were. The day was bright, but her mood was not. The packs had gathered safely behind the wall of the Goddess, the Alpha’s had gathered. All territories had been evacuated; it was as if they had already been scrubbed from the Earth. Her face was tipped to the sky, her eyes closed as she reviled in the brief break of sun through the clouds. She stood not far from the entrance to the Gealach Gleann, close enough to feel the hum of power that it resonated. Her mind and body feeling the pull to emerge herself in it once again. The realm of the Goddess was a strange but ethereal plane of existence. It was a mirror image of the world she knew with exceptions. It was a world of constant night, stars sparkled in the sky and lit up the realm with glistening light. Peace overtook her entire being in its presence, she imagined it was what many wolves felt after their deaths as they were welcomed into the Goddesses arms.It was a place and feeling that she had yearned for many a time since the pack wars. She was always ready to welcome death as a friendly companion. As she sat in the moon’s valley and basked in its greatness, she felt the last inkling of her madness leave her mind. She breathed in deeply as her mind was finally clear after so long. The memories of death and blood still filled her mind, grief still crippled her very being, but she could now function on more than just instinct. Birds chirped in happy song as the sun rose over the horizon. The moon valley slowly filling with light as the sun of a new day crested the top of the valley. It was silent, many of the packs had yet to rise from their beds, unaware of the strategic training and planning that they were about to undertake.Adelaide continued to gaze forward in silence as she watched the morning rise, the last remnants of the moon had long since passed. She’d watched her eye slowly disappear beneath the hills and light fill the sky. Sleep was always hard to come by since the pack wars. Too many memories, too many opportunities for visions to cloud her mind. The territory she had taken for herself was high atop the highest hill in the valley. It had been hers since her first years of training as the Conduit and it had always brought great peace to her. The view out of the whole valley brought a reflective experience that allowed her to process her bodies demands and her beast’s emotions. It also

The air was tense as she reached the moon alter. The Alphas had gathered for their morning meal around the central fire just in front of the Alpha dorms. It was customary for them to meet in the mornings and the evenings to converse during their meals.Adele walked silently behind her the entire way, her own little shadow as she carefully watched everything around her. The Alphas grew quiet as she approached, lifting their heads and assessing her in the morning light. Their gazes moved to the child and brought their gazes back to her after she gave a warning growl. She left them to finish their meal and climbed the steps to the stone table. She stood to the side and watched Adele as she cautiously approached the table. Her hand reached out and hovered above it as she stretched her fingers wide. “Can you feel it?” Adelaide asked her.The power that resonated from the table was unmissable, it hummed through the air and surrounded any within its vicinity. The world was cruel as well as it was kind. It gave, and it took. A heave and a push. A true creature of tragedy. Life was a swirling vortex of emotion. There was pain in every aspect of life as well as there was joy. They came hand in hand, like old friends. There was pain in growth but joy in accomplishment. Pain in death but joy at new life. A push and a pull that was as old as time. There had been a lot of take in Adelaide’s lifetime with hardly any give. She had experienced little joy since her adolescence. The Pack Wars had begun as she was young and her service as the Conduit had been vital throughout the wars that came. The Moon’s Will had to constantly be reinforced. But the pain. The pain and the grief that had centred into her very bones, it was crippling. Without the presence of the Goddess she was reverted back to her old self. The beast raged within her mind, pushed against the constraints of her mind to be set free. Clawing tooth and nail at the chance to w

Calm. It was a feeling that had not graced her body for a long time and yet as she looked up at the plain ceiling above her, she felt at peace. Her breathing was even, her body felt no pain and the beast within her mind didn’t prowl around her mind waiting to pounce. It was like a breath of fresh air after drowning year after year in her sorrow.Adelaide turned her head, her head propped up by a pillow that rested behind her head and looked out across the room from where she lay on the couch. Her fingers rubbed together against the familiar plaid blanket that covered her, she didn’t dare breath in the smell. Not yet.She stayed quiet as she took it all back in, reviving her memories of the place of her birth and her childhood. She looked at each picture that hung from the walls, the coats that hung from the hook. The family portrait that hung above the fireplace. The nostalgia was heavy in the air.Her eyes blurred as her chest became heavy with emotion. She felt weak for

It had been an intriguing few days. Although her arrival had not been the most welcoming, she had adapted as best as she could to the new situation she was presented with. The life mates, Georgia and Theo, disagreed over her current living arrangements. She had exiled herself to the grounds surrounding the house. Georgia wished for her to stay in the house while Theo was far warier of her. He knew the tales of her warrior success which meant he knew the stories of her feral side that had quickly spread after the Pack Wars.It was a rainy day and early in the morning. Dew stuck to the ground and fog lined the tops of the tall trees that surrounded the property. Adelaide stood leaning against the wide trunk of a tree, it’s bark bit into her back, as she repeatedly let her eyes wander over the empty space. She was constantly assessing for threats as she took a bite of the red apple she held in her right hand while her arm was crossed across her mid-section.She sensed no threat

They hadn’t spoken in the hours that had followed. They had moved quickly and travelled a long distance.Their power allowed them to keep up with one another and move faster than if they were burdened by other wolves. The snow had receded the further they moved away from the north. They had moved through old human cities that had long since decayed. Natural plant life had retaken what was ripped from them and entire buildings were covered with plants that now flourished. The world was thriving without the humans that had once destroyed it.Adam hesitated as they passed through the physical evidence of a devastating past. He had never experienced the cities while they were full of life, he would have only experienced what the wolves had claimed for themselves. They didn’t linger for long as she pushed for them to move onward. Her connection to Grace had grown stronger the further they moved from the north and it had soon become clear to Adelaide where they would be going.

The only sound being that of water lapping gently at the edge of the ground. The moon had risen high into the sky and a cold wind whipped through the air, moving her hair back from her face and away from her neck, leaving her bare. The atmosphere was strange. A mixture of hurt and despair along with suspense. No one knew what the world would now bring, where the Goddess would guide them. The last of the High Alpha’s had been killed. Murdered no less and now the wolves were left without clear leadership.Adelaide knew they would look to her for leadership. The thought passed through her mind easily as she stood in the lake, the water lapping against her bare skin. But she was no leader, only an executioner.Everything she had done in life had led to this point, whether it be by her own will or not, and she knew where it would l

Life and death. The two things that made up the very fabric of life. Natures law and the survival of the natural order were what kept the world balanced. When a rip occurred, the balance tipped viciously. And vicious it was. And the pain.Unbearable.A hole in the soul, imprinted forever. The breaking of a bond was enough to drive any wolf to the edge of their sanity and an Alpha was trained from birth to withstand the breaks they would feel from their pack members. But the breaking of a family bond, especially in a vicious manner, broke the body physically as well as mentally. The severe weight of the broken bonds upon her mind were now further burdened by the madness of the beast within her, the Lycan. The madness that circled her was a strange entity and allowed her mind to circle continuously.Adelaide stared up at the cave ceiling above her as she laid on her back. The look on Leonidas’s face gave reason for her most haunting fears. The world around her slowed as her heart rate sped to unbelievable beat and her breath caught in her chest. Her head rang with the howl of a beast, untamed and ready to be let loose. She felt the beginnings of panic overcome her as she tried to feel for any sense of her father through her connection to himBefore she could fall into the depths of despair and allow the inner beast to overcome her, a hand clamp over each of her wrists. Leonidas stood before her, eyes aglow from the wolf within, and a gaze full of worry and anger. His firm grip brought her back to earth and for a moment she felt a sense of déjà vu; she’d been in the same situation, in the same place a long time ago.“What is happening?” She asked desperately. He took a breath, and it seemed like an age had passed before he decided to speak again.“Michael seeks to fulfil the challenge that was issued, much has changed since you have

Thump after thump filled her mind as her feet pounded against the dirt. The ground around her thundered with the footfalls of the pack around her. One hundred sets of paws racing against time.Racing to save those who were in danger. The urgency within her was near hysteria as she ran, her legs pushed to their limit. The pack struggled to keep up with her as her mind gave way to instinct and the beast took over. Adam ran beside her but kept some distance. Her beast took over the very air that was breathable with dominance and power. The very trees of the forest bent against her will as she breezed past them in a clear path. One goal in mind.A vicious roar erupted from her throat as she cleared the tree line of the pack house in a leap. The acrid smell of vampire filled her nose and a purple haze filled her vision. Her heightened senses showed her the purple blurs within the clearing; vampires had no heat signature.Savage growls filled the air as her pack of wolves w

  • Wolf Queen   Chapter 19

Age was a powerful figure to a werewolf. Age brought power as well as knowledge. A powerful asset in the game of life. Adelaide’s age far surpassed that of Adam, she’d seen much while he had seen little, and with her age came history. His claws in her neck left her open with only a few small barriers to protect parts of herself that could not be allowed to be seen. He watched as her life played out before his eyes while she did the same to him.As a young boy, the youngest of three brothers, his childhood was very different from her upbringing. After the Pack Wars each pack had made it their mission to eradicate memories of the past discord within their kind and did their best to ignore it. Adam had been brought up in a time of peace, with no real idea of the dripping red cloud that hung over their history.Although he had been brought up through peaceful times of politics, it did not mean his home life was one also of peace. Michael had always been one to administer pu

Eating was not a simple task when it came to the way of the wolf. It was a vicious dance of tooth and claw to gain the prize of prime flesh between jaws. If a wolf wanted to eat, then they needed to find their place at the carcass. Human etiquette was abandoned in the wild and instead the need to take was the only instinct to follow. It had taken time for the pack to adjust and find their places. No wolf went hungry, they just needed to find the will to eat. Since the loss of the old way’s werewolf society had gotten lost in stereotypical hierarchies that had conditioned generation upon generation of wolves into submission. The basic instinct was there, all Adelaide did was trigger it once more.Adam had adapted well to the pack. No doubt her father’s teachings had taken great effect to the beast that resided within him. He had taken to his fur as was the way of the pack and had integrated with the help of the link he now shared with each of them.He had taken the pack

It was easy to become lost in the wild. The temptation of it was tantalising. Like a female in heat or a fresh kill between teeth. It was a drug like no other.Time moved quickly when travelling endlessly between the tall trees, but Adelaide knew full well of how much time had passed since her departure from the child who had captured her soul. Almost a year.Too long had she been separated from Grace, even longer from her father. It felt cruel on her behalf, to begin to heal and then to be separated again, to protect females that had done nothing for her. But she did as the Moon commanded, without question.Although hesitant at first, the females progressed rapidly from her teachings. The few males that had joined them soon learned that their place was no higher than that of the female next to them. Both male and female were equal. It was only those who were born and gifted for higher purpose that rose through the ranks. There were three new Alpha’s in her mist. Two fem
