Chapter 5: Mrs Morrison's ill Health

"So mum and dad, were right?" Aiden thought, sitting on the bed.

Aiden could not sleep and decided to distract himself with some work. He turned on his laptop and started working reading about the other businesses of the family. The following week, he would have to visit all the business branches to understand how things run over there and what he can bring on board.

In Ana's room, the nurse was done for the day and was in her room sleeping but Ana could not sleep. She was wondering what was happening at home. Why would her mother sign such a contract and not even mention it to her? If she had not woken up, she would have carried a child and delivered it without knowing. Ana tossed and turned in bed thinking about it. She got down from the bed and decided to walk around a little to clear her head. She walked to the door and realized it was locked. She recalled another term in the contract, she could not go out of her room without permission. She went back to the bed and sat down.

In the morning, Aiden booked a flight to Canada. He wanted to see Monica to understand exactly what happened and why she would make such a decision. The nurse had also woken up and was attending to Ana.

"You couldn't sleep?" the nurse asked seeing she looked exhausted.

"If you were in my shoes, can you sleep?" Ana asked and the nurse couldn't answer.

She gave Ana her medication and went out of the room returning with a tray of food. The food looked very attractive and tasty but the flavour made Ana frown.

"I can't eat this," Ana said.

"What do you want? Anything you prefer?" the nurse asked knowing it was not Ana trying to be difficult but the pregnancy was making her reject the food.

"I don't know," Ana said.

She was not happy with all that was happening to her. She wanted to see her mother and understand what was happening and how it happened.

"Please, I need to see my mum. Can you arrange that for me?" Ana asked pleading with the nurse.

The nurse felt sorry for her. She was only doing her job but she could see Ana was a prisoner. She was not allowed to go out of the room. No visitors and all alone. For someone who has a family, this was an unfair treatment for her.

"I will see what I can do. It is not a promise but let me speak with the doctor," the nurse said.

"I am Ana and you are?" Ana asked with a smile.

"I am Haga," the nurse replied.

"Thank you, Haga," Ana appreciated.

"I will leave this here. There are fruits, baked stuff, and juices. If you crave anything, let me know and I will get it for you," Haga said before exiting the room.

Inside her room, which was next to Ana's Haga called Dr Jerome.

"Hello Dr, Ana looked very exhausted this morning and she had not eaten," Haga reported.

"Have you administered any medication?" Dr Jerome asked.

"Only the ones she can take on an empty stomach but she has to eat," Haga said.

"She requested to see her mother. Can that be arranged? Her restlessness is linked with loneliness," Haga said.

"Alright. Let me speak with Mr Scott about that," Dr Jerome said and ended the call

Dr Jerome called Aiden's phone immediately after the call. Aiden was at the airport. He had gotten a new phone and gotten his number back. He was about to turn off his phone when Dr Jerome's call came through.

"Hello, what is it?"Aiden said.

"It is about Ms Morrison," Dr Jerome began and Aiden interrupted.

"If it is about me spending time with her, that is what I pay you for," Aiden said.

"No, it is not about that. She asked to see her mother," Dr Jerome said.

"What for?" Aiden asked.

"I am not sure exactly but she feels alone locked up in there. Mr Scott, please," Dr Jerome pleaded." Her health is very important," she added.

"Fine, I don't want any stranger in my home. Take her to your place and arrange for her mother to see her. Make sure no one sees her," Aiden said.

"Okay Mr Scott," Dr Jerome acknowledged and called Haga back.

"I am sending my driver over. Get her ready," Dr Jerome said as soon as Haga answered.

Haga went back to Ana's room. She opened the wardrobe and brought out a dress with a hoodie and gave it to Ana.

"Put this on, we are going out to see your mother," Haga announced and Ana smiled for the first time.

Once Ana was dressed, Haga went out of the room with her. She had asked Ana to keep her head down. Haga held Ana's hand and led her down the staircase. Angela saw them leave but said nothing. There was a black tainted car parked at the entrance of the apartment. Haga opened the door for Ana and she sat down in the back seat. Haga joined Ana in the back seat and the car went out of the compound towards Dr Jerome's home.

After a couple of minutes' drive, the car entered a compound and Haga stepped out of the car with Ana, who still had her head down. Haga led Ana into the apartment.

"Ana," came Mrs Morrison's voice.

"Mum," Ana said and hugged her.

"I will leave you two to talk," Haga said and exited the room for the two.

"Ana, how are you doing? You are glowing. Pregnancy looks good on you," Mrs Morrison said.

"I am just coping. Mum, what happened?" Ana asked and Mrs Morrison lowered her head.

"Mum, what is wrong?" Ana asked seeing her mother didn't look okay.

"I really sorry, Ana. If I had another option, I would not sacrifice you like that. Your sister is too young to be a surrogate mother and I have passed the age of childbirth," Mrs Morrison said.

"A couple of days ago before you shared the news of getting the scholarship, I passed out at work and was sent to the hospital, Mrs Morrison said and lowered her head as Ana listened to her.

"I was diagnosed with cancer and had to start treatment immediately. I was told about a rich man looking for a woman to be a surrogate mother. I went to see him and signed the contract with your sister present. I had told them I couldn't bring myself to tell you. The day you went for the medical exams, that was when it was done. I was just waiting for the right time to tell you about the pregnancy and other things but you passed out. I called Dr Jerome and they took you away," Mrs Morrison narrated and gave the medical documents to Ana who read through the report with eyes widened.

"You have cancer?" Ana asked and Mrs Morrison lowered her head.

Ana hugged her.

"I am so sorry Mum," Ana tried to console her.

"I was told I need to start the chemo treatment immediately so the cancer doesn't spread to other parts of my body," Mrs Morrison said.

"It is okay Mum. I understand," Ana said hugging Mrs Morrison.

"I am sorry Ana. I should have told you," Mrs Morrison said in tears.

"Don't worry, Mum. Your health is what matters most to me. Don't worry. I will do my best to help raise the money for your treatment," Ana said and continued to hug Mr Morrison as they both shared tears.
