The smell of chicken stew wafted through my nostrils when I reached my home in the evening.
"Hey, mom… It smells delicious," I stated as I perched on the kitchen stool. Trixie went to greet mom with a hug, tail wagging, and licking.
"What took you so long?" My mom asked as she placed a cup of lemon tea in front of me.
"I went for grocery shopping with Uncle Mac. You know, how forgetful he gets these days," I informed and sipped my tea.
"Hmm... his sons are really worried about him. Mac just won't accept their invitation to move in with them," she mused, stirring the stew.
"Hey mom, Noah invited me for his sister's birthday party this Saturday. He would love for you to join the party as well. Are you working this weekend?"
"That's nice. It's been almost two months since I last met the Parkers. I am sure I can make time," she grinned and suddenly looked all young. Mom and Noah's parents got along well. They had a close relationship with all their children and I often wished that I had a similar family.
"Hope your father doesn't host one of his office parties this weekend," she quipped and I snorted at the thought.
Dad hosted occasional themed parties and invited all his business associates and clients over. Mom and I hated these parties. Men and women dressed elegantly would attend these parties as they discussed business and sometimes mixed pleasure with it.
After a first few parties, I banned the guest's entry in the first wing was my bedroom sat. Sleeping on a bed where two strangers shared their bodily fluids was definitely not pleasant. I had to strip my mattress and changed my bedding before banning any guest from entering my room from that day.
After Trixie things became much easier. She would chase anyone who dared to enter the first wing. They used the guest bedrooms or several other rooms.
Sometimes I would be so much tempted to take a photo using my phone and sent it to leading news agencies. The people who pose as a respected socialite would lose their control and behaved like a bunch of hormonal teenagers with a decent amount of alcohol inside when they are at a party.
Then, there were a few women who come looking for a new prey. They are the most dangerous of all. Sometimes, dad forced me and mom to attend the party. Those nights were the worst, mom worked overtime to swat the male crowd away from me.
I didn't think my dad thought so much about how I felt about the entire ordeal. To him, we were his trophy family. He just used us to show off to the public.
Fortunately, I inherited all my features from my mom and looked no bit like my dad, added reason for him to hate us more–as if we cared. Okay, I lied. For once, it would be nice to have a considerate father.
After a delicious dinner, I climbed the stairs to my room with Trixie in tow. A quick shower later, I sat on my working desk by the window to finish my homework for the day.
The evening air was crisp and the sound of ocean waves hitting the beach could be heard. On most of the sleep-deprived nights it lulled me to sleep–now it relaxed me.
Trixie sat in her chair with her gaze fixed outside the window. After doing my homework, I settled down on my bed with my mobile and Trixie climbed in after me.
I didn't know when I fell asleep, but woke up when my bed dipped indicating someone just climbed in. I turned to see the outline of my mom. With a small sigh, I moved closer to her and threw my leg over her slender frame. And, we fell asleep with Trixie curled between us.
------
After my usual morning routine, I found my mom in the kitchen. She was dressed in her formal pants and a white sleeveless blouse, looking so much younger than her actual age.
However, I could look past her makeup and see what she was trying to hide. Her eyes were puffy and the bags underneath her eyes were more prominent even after using a concealer.
"Mom," I called softly.
She turned around and I hugged her, my hands rubbing her back in a comforting manner.
"Mom, I never asked when something goes on between you and dad. But, I'm clearly not okay with you leading a life like this. Please, talk to me," I pleaded.
"It's nothing, sweetie… Just the work stress." She gave me her best fake smile. Sadly, I am her daughter and knew well. I knew when she laughed from her heart and when she didn’t.
I shook my head in denial. "I'm done with you hiding things from me, mom. I'm nineteen and I believe it's high time you shared your problems with me."
"Sweetie, not now. You won't understand."
"I'll understand if you want more time. But, don't pull that you-don't-understand card with me. If I am sure of one thing, then it's my dad is not treating you like you deserved to be."
Mom lowered her eyes and I could feel her pain radiating in waves. She bit her lips to stop the sob that threatened to erupt any moment.
"Mom, we need to talk. Take a day off and we're going somewhere."
"No, sweetie. I can't skip work. I can't lose this job. You know, if things go wrong then I want a grip," she said.
I let out a defeated sigh. "Mom, just know that whatever happens, I'm here for you. Always keep that in mind, will you?"
She nodded with a sad smile and after a quick breakfast, I waved her goodbye.
Mom and dad was never an ideal couple. They put up a good act in front of the crowd and I wouldn't have known if I hadn't met Noah's parents. They were so much in love that his dad's eyes would sparkle every time it landed on his mom.
It was after getting closer to his family, I understood that what I had so far was not a healthy family. There was no love.
Mom was always alone–wasting away in this mansion while dad did God knows what. I wondered if he had a secret mistress. However, I would always shrug those thoughts off as he is my dad end of the day.
I dressed up in the first pair of clothes I pulled out, not caring about how I looked. The thoughts of my mom clouded my mind as I walked towards the bus station.
Trixie pulled me off from the road and barked bringing me out of my thoughts. It was then I realized that I was about to be sandwiched to the road by a speeding car if it was not for her.
I thanked her with a kiss, which she returned with a low growl as if scolding me for my behavior. Smiling at her antics I followed her to Uncle Mac's residence, this time more aware of my surroundings.
------
"What's wrong?" Noah questioned the moment I sat beside him. He could easily read my expressions just like I can with my mom.
"Nothing," I sighed and leaned on his shoulders. The brave act I put for everyone was about to crumble and I tried to conceal that from him.
"Is it about your mom again?" He asked softly, his hand going around my shoulder as he pulled me closer. I buried my face in his chest, trying harder not to break in front of the crowd.
"It's okay, you know. We're all here for you. Did you talk to her?" He asked again as his hands massaged my head – a way to distract me from the direction of my depressing thoughts.
"I talked, but she wouldn't say a thing. I'm so worried. Am I a good daughter, Noah?" I sniffled, shedding the first few drops of my tears.
"You know you are. Shush, it's okay."
I felt his breath hot against my scalp and my heart fluttered when I felt his lips press a kiss, which was assuring and made me feel like a kid.
"Everything's going to be All right. Maybe I'll ask my mom to speak to her if she comes to the party. Your mom may open up, you know adult talks and all," he suggested.
I nodded and gave him a dry laugh. "What would I have done if I didn't meet you that day?"
"Hmm... let me guess. Your ass would've kissed the snow-covered sidewalk and you would've walked like a crab for weeks," he teased and I giggled.
"Maybe I should officially name you my ass guard," I joked.
Noah cracked up with laughter and we both laughed until tears blurred our vision. A few heads turned to look at us, but we didn't care. My heart felt light, not just because of his words, my heart was soaring high because of his kiss.
My first kiss from a male, who is not family.
"That sounds weird, but it's kind of true," Noah chuckled once again. "I did save your ass a lot of times."
"Yeah," I agreed and leaned back in my seat.
When I am with Noah all my issues seemed to fade and he gave me a confidence boost. I should figure out what was the real deal between my parents.
Our stop arrived as I was once again lost in my thoughts. Noah pulled me to standing position and together with many other students we exited the bus and walked to the university.
Noah's friends were waiting for him near the locker and I found Jen, Tracy, and Sana standing with them. I grinned widely as they greeted me with their usual morning hug. The guys just did a high five in their style as a greeting.
Hayden, Alec, and Riley were with me from kindergarten just like my girls. When Noah moved in as a new student, he soon became a part of our group, making us eight, four girls and four boys.
Hayden and Jennifer have a thing going on between them, though they wouldn't admit it out loud, just like me and Noah. Others were just friends though we joke about them and suggest becoming a couple. Sana and Tracy would just grin while the boys thought about it for a moment before shrugging it off.
Hayden and Alec were on the football team with Noah while Riley was our guy. He usually hung out with us than going to the games. I was laughing at something Alec said when I caught Sandra glaring at me. I narrowed my eyes and quirked an eyebrow at her. We continued to stare, not ready to break it when Taylor came for Sandra.
"Jealous?" Noah whispered in my ear, making me shiver.
"Just trying to keep your virtue intact," I said and rolled my eyes to indicate that it didn’t bother me. Who am I kidding? It bothered me in every possible way.
We are what they might call old school. Our group differed from others, as kids, we all agreed. We promised to not lose our virginity to some random guy or a girl. We still honored it.
Just because the guys don't sleep around doesn't mean they can't fool around. We have gone to a few parties and we have caught them making out, but that's where it stops.
"Is that so?" He chuckled softly. "I can assure you that I don't have any intention to lose it," he stated. "Not unless it's you," he added after a short pause and I felt my cheeks heating up as my breath quickened.
That was as close as he got expressing how he felt for me and the thought of him waiting for me, warmed my heart. To be honest, my heart swelled a little and I welcomed the tingles I felt in my lower belly.
"I like it when you blush," he smiled, pushing a strand of hair behind my ears. The floor tiles suddenly looked so intriguing and I looked anywhere but him.
Noah's long index finger pushed my chin up, trying to meet my gaze. His thumb rested just below my lower lip and for a moment I forgot where we were.
A shrill of the bell distracted us and I heard my friends cursing silently as they looked at each other. I could hear them whispering about missing our first kiss and realized how close we were.
Somehow, it all felt right once again. I know I liked Noah. Not sure if I was ready to call that love. I never experienced love with a man before, so I didn't know. However, I cared deeply for him.
Shaking my head to clear the thoughts, I followed Noah to our first class.
Soon the classes were over and the five of us excluding Noah, Alec and Hayden went to the football ground. Our university was well known for its sports activities and has created a few well-known sports champions. We had an exclusive football stadium built a few years ago. It was the first time for me and Riley, going to a football game. I was glad I had company. I sat at a safe distance from the field while Sana and Riley went to buy snacks and soft drinks for us. The stadium was filling up with students and lecturers just as eager as us to see their students win this match. Jennifer informed me this match was important for the trio sportsmen, who are our best friends. The university would select the best players and will be sending them to the mega football tournament which starts next quarter. I've heard about the mega football tournament between the well-known universities in the United States. I have never realized how important this was to Noah
I screamed in frustration when I failed for the umpteenth time to concentrate. My mind kept wandering back to the recent happenings. Wasn’t meditation supposed to ease my mind? Trust me, it didn't help today. Nothing helped. Not the calming sound of the ocean, the gentle breeze or my yoga. Trixie barked and nuzzled my neck before licking on the side of my face, making me sigh. It's not that every day I felt restless. Just on certain days like this. I didn’t like that I couldn’t pinpoint the reason for my restlessness. "I want to speak to Noah," I mused aloud as I ran my hand absentmindedly on Trixie's fur. She gave me a bark in reply. "What, you miss him too?" I cooed and got another bark as she wagged her tail. "Then, let's go see him today," I said, getting up and she followed me as usual. Doctors have discharged Noah with an advice of two days compulsory rest, so he should be at home. Somehow my mind seemed to settle down thinking a
I was home early as Mili came back from her work earlier. So, Noah was not alone. We both didn't speak about the near-kiss experience. We just hung out like the old times, talking and watching movies. I told him about my mom receiving a gift from an unknown person supposedly in love with her.Noah asked me not to judge my mother and to have an open mind to accept whatever she had to say. I would never judge my mother. If she liked the guy, I would advise her to divorce my dad and move on with her life.I was deep in my thoughts when I stumbled against someone and Trixie let out a displeased growl beside me. A strong pair of hands steadied my clumsy being and I sighed in gratitude. However, my gratitude didn't last. When I looked up to thank my savior, words got stuck in my throat.Guess who it is?It was none other than the great Irwin Pierce, elite Douche Bag of the decade."Thanks," I mumbled in a clipped tone and tried to
Mom patted my arm and took a sip from of her lavender tea as I waited impatiently."The cops chased him when he wouldn't slow down. Jaxon's car collided with the barrier on the road and skipped. He was driving over the speed limit, so the damage was big. His spine and pelvic region were severely injured at the impact.""It took six months for him to get out of the hospital and his parents were shocked by the fact that he couldn't father an heir to their business empire. It was then someone told them about me and you. They met my parents with a marriage proposal.""That's ridiculous. Why would you accept then? You should've married Nolan and you would've been happy," I exclaimed."I didn't agree to it at first. But, Nolan's parents who were equally rich like Jaxon didn't want me as their daughter in law. They came home without Nolan's knowledge and what can I say, it didn't go well.""We may be poor, sweetie. But, as I said we valued our self-respec
Nolan turned out to be a much better person than I thought.Initially, I was wary of him. I mean, which man in the right mind would send gifts to a married woman, declaring their undying love for her. Now, I must speak to my mom and see, how she feels about everything. Most important, I must figure out, why she isn't leaving my dad. I never saw something good in him, none.Never once in my nineteen years of existence, he regarded me as a daughter when we were not in public. Not once, he gazed down at me with a love only those proud fathers held for their daughter. He was not even there for my graduation. To him, I was non-existent unless he was with his business associates or in one party he hosted. When my friends got their graduation gifts, all I got was a questioning look with a raise of his eyebrow, him silently asking me if that makes a difference. The only time he spoke was when he wanted me to attend a party or when he wanted t
"You remember Irwin Pierce, right?" Tracy asked me and I almost choked on my sandwich."Know him? No one in this table knows him better than Sophia," Jennifer snickered.I rolled my eyes and continued to chew the bite I've already taken."He christened her bed a few years back at one of her father's parties," Riley supplied."Is he really hot like he is seen in those photos?" Sana asked with dreamy eyes and I snorted loudly."He is rotten inside. Don't fall for the charms, Sana," I said, giving her a warning look and took another bite."She's right. He is bad news. The big B-A-D," Riley stated dramatically, making us laugh."What about him?" Noah asked. He didn't like Irwin. Who would like a man who tried to make a pass at your girl at every chance he got?"His grandfather has passed away recently and it is only last week he gets to know about his will," Tracy started."Apparently, the grand pops knew very well about his
It was finally Saturday and we were already at Noah's place. My dad didn't give a damn as usual and his party organizers were all over the place working on the full swing when we left home. I remembered to lock my room, so no one would get in. I hated strangers in my room.Elsa was full of energy and at the moment and she ran around in a pair of her pajamas with wet hair as we still had time for the party. We came earlier so we could help Mrs. Parker with the cooking.Noah and his dad Josiah were setting up the backyard for the party while his sixteen-year-old sister Natasha busied herself with the cake."Natasha baked the cake today," Mili stated proudly and the corner of Natasha's lips lifted slightly.Natasha has a keen interest in baking and one day she wanted to start her own business. I admired the way her fingers worked skillfully on the cake. She was drawing Elsa's favorite cartoon characters on it."This is so beautiful," I praised
"How long have you known Josiah? I want the truth, Nolan!""We met recently," Nolan's reply came unaffected by my mom's demeanor."Nolan!""What?" He asked again in a nonchalant tone. "You won't talk to me, don't respond to my messages and don't send a thank you card for my gifts. I had to find a way to talk to you.""Nolan..."Mom's voice came out weaker this time and we all released a breath we were holding as we relaxed against the wall. A smile filled with relief spread across our faces."Why are you not talking to me, Kate?""I-I–""We were best friends. At least I thought you were. How could you throw away everything we had in a heartbeat?" Nolan's pain filled voice brought tears to my eyes."Nolan, it's not what you think. I–""No, Kate. It isn't. If my parents said something to you, you should've told me. You should've asked what I wanted. You didn't give me a chance.” Nolan’s accus

The morning was warm and pleasant as usual. A thrill coursed through my veins when I thought about my wedding with Noah. We hardly had two days left. We haven’t met mostly due to his practice, and we also kept Riley’s warning in mind. Our nights were usually spent talking, sexting and what not’s. A smile tugged at my lips when I thought about Noah’s sensual messages. We won’t meet until the very moment of the wedding itself. Something about the bad omen. Though we would travel in the same jet, I wondered how our friends would keep us apart. A knock distracted me and my frown deepened wondering who would come at this time of the day. It was still early–9:30 in the morning. Mom has left for work while Grandpa and Grandma has already left for Hawaii with Noah’s sisters and parents to supervise the wedding arrangements. My frown turned into a scowl when I came face to face with Irwin. “What are you doing here?” My voice came colder than I intended it to be.“I just wanted to talk,” he r
The stranger swallowed and shifted on her foot, not answering my question. I’ve seen her before, though not in person. Her face was familiar. “Who are you?” I asked again.“Miss Valentine?” Her voice wavered, her eyes shifted with discomfort.“That’s me.”“My… I…” She stuttered, her hands fiddling with her coat.“Why don’t you sit first?” I suggested, and she nodded before moving to occupy the single couch beside the table. By now, my friends had filled out the living area with puzzled looks.“I’m Madison. Madison Brooks.”That name rang a bell. “Wait, Madison as in the girl who caught photographed with Pierce.”“Y-yes.” Her uneasiness grew while I wondered what she wanted to do with me.“Why are you here?” Noah asked and came to sit beside me. The living room was soon occupied with my friends.“Well… it was a bad idea,” she said and stood all of a sudden. “I shouldn’t have come.”“Madison, wait,” I stopped her before she could leave. “These are my friends. Why did you come here?” Whe
"Trixie! Are you ready, girl?"A bark came as a reply from the living room, drawing a chuckle from me."Grandma, I am going to Alec's place. I'll message mom on the way.""Sure, honey. Will you be back for dinner?""I'm not sure, grandma. I'll call you, okay?""All right, my dear. You take care now.""I will. Don't forget your medicines.""I won't."I kissed her cheek before leaving the warm comfort of her home. She followed. "Where's grandpa?""Oh, it's Saturday. He went to meet his old buddies in the diner.""That's great. See you later, grandma.""Bye, sweetie."I hopped in mom's car and tightened the seatbelt around Trixie. Mom gave me her car since Nolan mostly dropped her at the office. I expected her to move in with him as soon as the divorce was finalized.I picked Tracy and Sana from the B2 bus station before continuing onwards. The drive towards Alec's home took thirty minutes through the traffic. The guys stayed over last night."Where's Jen? I thought she'd be with you guy
When we reached the venue which was once again Irwin’s mansion I loathed, the media surrounded us like hawks. Lightning flashes and clicks enveloped us, yet there was no warmth.“Miss Valentine, who is the gentleman with you?”“Is he your friend?”“Is he your boyfriend?”“Are you breaking up with Mr. Pierce?”“Are you calling off the wedding?”I shook my head at the meaningless questions that deafened us before being securely led away by the securities on duty.“That was crazy,” Riley whispered.“Tell me about it.” I rolled my eyes, wanting nothing to do with the attention. The huge ballroom I danced with Hector earlier was transformed for the night. Red curtains embellished with gold embroidery flowers hung from the ceiling. Everything from the red carpets to the mountain of foods showcased the wealth the Pierce’s possessed. Men and women of all ages, adorned with luxurious clothes and jewelry waltzed on the dance floor for a slow music.“Are we in Buckingham Palace?” Riley gawked at
"Why are you looking at me like this?" Riley asked with a suspicious look.I bit my lip, averting my gaze. How am I going to ask him?“There is something we need to ask you?” Noah drawled as I cast an uneasy look at him. He pulled out his phone as my frown deepened. I watched as his fingers typed away on the keypad. “Here,” Noah slid the phone to Riley. “Have you seen this man before?”My posture relaxed and stiffened simultaneously at this question. Relaxed because we wouldn’t offend Riley if he isn’t Hector’s son. Stiffened wondering what if Riley is, in fact, the illegitimate son of Hector?"Yeah, that's Uncle Hector. Mom's friend," Riley said, returning the phone. "Why do you ask?" His eyes swept through everyone in the room before locking with Noah’s.Our eyes were glued to his face, unable to believe that we had the heir among us all this time. That explained why his mother wasn't affected when Irwin targeted my friends. Hector must've done something.Noah asked for my phone an
