I woke up to a text message on my phone.
W: What game are you playing, Mr. Penn?
Barking out a laugh, I rubbed my eyes. I decided it could wait until after I had some coffee. Taking a quick shower, getting dressed, and then making myself coffee, I scheduled my day. There weren’t any classes today so I was free to go to the museum. It also seemed like a good day to message Ava. Any later and it would only be worse.
It was seven in the morning, which was far too early to get ahold of her so I opted for an early museum day and then at lunch I could reach out to Ava. We could set up something later in the evening and depending on how mad she would be, we could go to dinner. That might lessen the blow if I paid for it. Especially if it was her favorite place downtown.
I let out a heavy sigh. It was still
I set the food down on the table before taking off my coat. The line had been atrocious at Davies and like she said, it was filled to the brim with teenagers. It was seven forty-five now and I had about fifteen minutes until Ava came over. Luckily, there wasn’t much to clean up and I debated taking a quick shower. Opting to just reapply some deodorant, I pulled out plates for us so that we didn’t need to eat out of the styrofoam containers. There was a knock on the door and then Ava opened it. She didn’t have a key but if the door was open, she usually just let herself in. I smiled and but she ignored me as she pulled off her coat and shoes.“Ava…please…”“No. I’m still mad.”I chuckled and walked over to her, holding out my hand. “I got Davies. I even got an extra order of cheese on your fries and waited within the sea of crazed teenagers for the pie.”&ldq
After spending the rest of the week at the museum, I finished off the ten scrolls that the excavation team had provided. Carrie sent in a request for more to be provided but in the meantime, I had extra time on my hand. Ava and I hung out on Saturday but we were still unable to even brush up against each other without me feeling like I was being stabbed. We decided to keep it simple with a movie and then dinner.Ava did say that she spoke to her Alpha. He was busy this week and the next but agreed to see me the week after. I was glad since I would like to know what the hell was going on. Ava also had a a few of her pack members at school and we confirmed it was any wolves that elicited that reaction. All of them were unmated, Onan pointed out as well but Ava said she didn’t know anyone mated that was going to college. However, humans did not elicit the same pain. Which seemed odd but everything about this whole situation was odd.Since the new scrolls still hadn&
“Alpha Chester, it’s good to see you.” Ava bared her neck and I was about to when he waved me off.“Wolves in hospital beds get a pass on the acknowledgement. How are you feeling?”I took a deep breath. “Better. I mean, I’m breathing but apparently that’s the bar.”Alpha Chester laughed and nodded. “Indeed. One of these days, I’d like you to visit more than just the hospital. It’s starting to be an omen with you.”“Once is by chance. Two is a coincidence.”“Let’s not make it three and have it be a pattern, yeah?”I still acknowledged him, baring my neck to him. “Yes, Alpha.”“Ava, dear, why don’t you take a break? I need to speak with Caspian here.”She nodded. “Yes, Alpha.” Blowing me a kiss, Ava opened up the door. “I’ll be back tomorrow morning. I have class tonight
Alpha Chester ended up leaving a few minutes after that. However, he did say that I wouldn’t be seeing Ava tomorrow. That, until I had either marked or accepted my mate, he couldn’t allow Ava to see me. It was understandable. While we were friends, we had a physical history. It was painful to even touch her but technically, since I wasn’t mated, there was still the chance we could be intimate. He also wanted to put some distance between us since he said that despite her best efforts, she did have more feelings for me than I did for her. Which he confirmed with me as well. It was hard to hear, and I didn’t think that our relationship had shifted past what some would consider friends with benefits. If I was hurting her chances of being with her mate, all the while messing up my own mate bond, I couldn’t argue with his decision. After he left, a few of the pack nurses and a doctor went through their checks before giving me something
This was fine. This was okay.He wasn’t even really mad today.Nothing had forced him over the edge today.Today wouldn’t be bad.I could deal with this.I closed my eyes tighter as his boot pressed into my back. He leaned over and flicked ash from his cigarette on me. Dad never smoked in the house. Hannah hated when he smoked. She refused to let him in the house if he smelled like it. So he had other ways of getting his vice.“How did I get stuck with you? You useless wolf. I’m so glad that I had the forethought to bring Hannah into the mix.” His boot lifted off but connected with my side. “You really are the most useless thing. You were supposed to be a ‘great miracle’ that your mother begged me to take care of.”Curling up into a ball, I reached up and held onto the only thing left of my mother’s. Her locket never left my neck. It was the one thing that survived. Outside of me. I survived. All I did was survive. My muscles tightened as the cigarette butt burned into my skin under my
“Correct.” I sighed. “I have my own homework to do. If you did yours, then maybe you wouldn’t be failing.”With how she carried herself, you would think that Rebecca was the oldest. She was a bully and the true delinquent in the family. However, she was three months younger than I was. Hanna, my mother’s younger sister, had her three months after I was born. When the news broke, the scandal nearly tore two packs apart. Our pack, Dawn Claw, was neighbors with another pack. Usually packs didn’t stay too close to one other but there was the huge river between us. It was nearly a lake in certain places but the river was the territorial barrier. On the other side was the Moon Shadow pack. A lot of times, our packs were interwoven and wolves would find mates from either side of the river.Mother and Hannah had been from Dawn Claw, their father being the Gamma of the pack. Dad had been the second youngest son of Moon Shadow’s Beta. My mother and Dad were fated mates. So, since the position of
Slamming my locker shut, I glared at my best friend, Krista. “What do you want?”“Maybe…it would be your face on Friday?”“Absolutely not.” I walked past her.Krista had been by my side since we were eleven. Her family had been part of the Moon Shadow pack before it was absorbed into our pack. They weren’t leadership but they were one of the original founding families. Alpha Damian, and his father before him, made sure that when the packs were combined that many of the families were given similar status. She transferred into our school when we started Middle School and somehow I became her best friend. I had no control over it and I still didn’t. Krista was the one person who I could rely on no matter what and sometimes that got her in trouble. She’d run her mouth a little much and we’d both end up in deep shit.“But Winter, come on. Hunky Jackson is having a party at his house. Everyone is going. Everyone. And you can’t say everyone if you’re not going. I need my wingman! Wingwoman. W
Mrs. Cross’ desk had a ton of flowers and gifts on it. I smiled and pulled out a small little box from my backpack. Krista lugged in a box of diapers and slammed it down on her chair. Our last class of the day was Latin. Luckily, it wasn’t a block but it really wasn’t going to be a regular day anyways. When our teacher stepped into the class from the bathroom, her eyes were all puffy. Today was going to be her last day. Mrs. Cross said that it was just going to be for a little while and she would be back teaching but most of us knew better.“Mrs. Cross, where do we put gifts?” Lauren had a gift on her table as well.“Oh my, you guys…you didn’t have to. Really!”Krista snorted. “Too bad! Where do you want them?”The class laughed, except for Rebecca and her cronies in the corner of the classroom. Of course they didn’t bring anything but then you’d actually have to show up to class to get to know a teacher. Mrs. Cross had actually moved up with us over the years. She decided to finally t

“I don’t think being a brat is worse than an asshole.”Onan let me feel the full brunt of his irritation. ‘No. The fact that you’re being a child and running away makes it worse. You ran with your tail between your legs like you did when you left Blue Crescent.’“That wasn’t…I wasn’t running! I didn’t run that time and you know it!”He snorted. ‘So you admit you are now.’“Goddess…damn you, wolf.”Getting up from my lean, I grabbed the container of food from the fridge and took off the plastic lid. I opened the oven and placed it directly on the rack before setting the timer for fifteen minutes. It didn’t take me long to make some tea and I sipped it, looking out the window. The wind had picked up but there still wasn’t any snow.“So what if I’m running away. Is that really so bad?”
Flinging the covers off myself, I jolted up un bed. I was drenched in sweat and I grabbed the front of my shirt. Gasping for breath, I was inhaling but no air was coming in. Tears prickled as I coughed trying to somehow clear my airways. Squeezing my eyes shut, I leaned forward and curled up over the blankets.Almost as suddenly as my breath was stolen away from me, a single gasped filled my lungs with the air that I desperately needed. It hurt, my head pounding and my chest liftings but at least I could breathe. At first it was the smallest of breaths, my full inhale hitching. Making me inhale faster to try and get more oxygen.‘Slow down, Caspian. Slow breaths. Deep. You’re panicking.’I wanted to scoff at Onan but sat up, letting out a long breath before I pulled one in slowly. It still wasn’t quite full but it was better. Through my nose, out my mouth, I tried to let my panic ebb away. My chest was still hurting but not nearl
*** Caspian’s POV ***“I’m going to lock up, anything you need?”I looked up from the table I had been leaning over for the past few hours. “No, thank you though. I’m good. I’ll probably put in another couple of hours and head home for the weekend.”Carrie smiled and nodded. “Don’t stay too late. You’re too young to become a fossil in here.”“Yes, ma’am.”She gave me a quick wave before closing the large double doors. It was well past closing at the museum but I decided to help with the backlog of work. Really, it was something I could do that would take up my entire thought. Something for my hands to do. Sitting here doing work was better than sitting in my flat alone.I’d been working on this particularly lengthy scroll since Wednesday. It was rare for me to be working on one for thi
“What were you thinking? Did you think that any part of that decision was smart?”Krista and I were standing in Alpha Damian’s office. Krista’s mom was the one who was standing in front of us. Both our heads were bowed against her anger. Gamma Maddox was nowhere to be seen after he made sure we got to the pack house.“You left school. Not telling anyone where you went. We get a message that you went off territory. We call you. You don’t answer. Then you text your dad that you’re going shopping? That’s it. No information about where you are going. Not how long you would be. Nothing.”Mrs. St James threw up her hands and paced, pinching the bridge of her nose. “I am dealing with people breaking into my home and you two decide to leave without any protection. Without anyone knowing where you were. What did you think would happen? What if those people was waiting
