Chapter 5

After entering the bank, Austin took a number and waited.

When it was his turn, he brought the debit card Ezra had given him to the counter and sat down. Once he saw the bank clerk attending to him, his eyelid twitched.

It was Susie Wood!

What a coincidence it was.

Austin narrowed his eyes. Susie was Harvey's girlfriend.

Though they had never met, he'd heard about her from Nancy, and he had seen photos of her before.

Austin did not resent Susie. He simply felt a bit vexed.

She was a pretty young woman with a good job. It was a miracle that she was interested in Harvey, a useless loser leeching off his parents.

It was her business what she demanded from the Welches before agreeing to marry Harvey. That matter was between them. Austin was only infuriated by the Welches' attitude. They took the money he needed to save Dahlia's life and wanted him to be the poor sob who had to fund his brother-in-law's life.

"Hello. What would you like to do today?" Susie greeted him with a professional smile.

Austin took a deep breath to compose himself. Then, with a faint smile, he placed the debit card with the purple orchid on the counter and said, "Hi. I'd like to withdraw some money."

Susie was about to ask for the amount he wanted to withdraw when she saw the debit card. Frowning, she said, "Are you sure this is a debit card?"

She flipped it over and checked it multiple times.

Susie could safely say that she had never seen a debit card like this one before.

Austin was startled. Did Ezra give him a fake debit card?

But then again, Ezra had paid off the 200 thousand dollars needed for Dahlia's surgery, so why would the former give him a fake card?

"I'm sure," Austin replied with a nod as he observed Susie.

As they were sitting down, he could not see how tall she was. However, her uniform was form-fitting enough to show off her curves. Her smooth skin and delicate features gave her the appearance of a sweet and lovely young woman.

Austin sighed. Why was a decent young woman like her so blind when it came to love?

Susie's frown deepened, but she tried to go through with the transaction anyway.

But when the system notified her that the card could not be read, she ran out of patience.

Susie slammed the debit card back down on the counter and said curtly, "I'm sorry. The system couldn't read your debit card."

Austin cursed to himself. Did Ezra really trick him?

But why would he spend 200 thousand dollars upfront before tricking him with a fake debit card? That did not seem right.

"Could you run it again? It's a real debit card," Austin beseeched.

Now that he and Nancy had gotten a divorce, he did not plan on living in the same rental anymore. He wanted to move to a new place with Dahlia.

Nancy had taken the 200 thousand dollars which had been the last of his money. He was broke. If he did not manage to withdraw any money, he would not even be able to buy food, let alone pay for the rest of Dahlia's medical fees.

"Are you attempting to cause a scene here, mister?"

Susie raised her eyebrows and said with an icy expression, "From the moment you came in, I got the feeling you were eyeing me in an unusual way. If you want to flirt with me, you should at least bring a real debit card with you.

"Kindly leave. Don't waste the time of other customers who came to do actual business, or else, I'll call the security."

Austin was stupefied. What the hell was she saying?

Before he could explain himself, Susie crossed her arms and yelled, "Security!"

Immediately, two security guards came over.

As it was morning, many people had come to the bank. They all turned to look at Austin.

Austin pointed at the debit card and said frantically, "This is a debit card! I came here to withdraw money. What gives you the right to kick me out?"

Susie remained silent with a stoic expression.

The security guard said grimly, "Please leave, mister. If you continue harassing the bank employees during working hours, we're going to call the police."

"I …" Austin was speechless with rage. Not only did he fail to withdraw the money, but he was even labeled as someone who came to harass a woman.

Just then, a pot-bellied, middle-aged man dressed in a suit walked over.

"What's going on here?"

Susie's icy expression vanished at once. She rose from her seat, and with a pitiful expression, she whined, "Mr. Beck, this man brought a fake debit card to try and withdraw money from the bank, and he kept staring indecently at me."
