Aria inhaled deeply through her nostrils and exhaled slowly as she stood contemplating her next move that morning. It was just 9am at the office and she was ready to go in and see her boss with her letter grasped firmly in one hand._only problem? She was starting to over think everything!Damn!
Putting in the resignation letter turned out to be a lot more difficult than she had previously imagined it to be. She thought all she needed to do was go and slam it on his desk and walk out with her head held high but easily said than done right? So there she was pacing back and forth in total anxiety.Earlier at her house, she was confidently rehearsing the line she had come up with over and over again while looking at her expression in the mirror but now that the only thing standing between her and her boss was the glass door and her sudden development of cold feet.Huff!
Another five more minutes and she was in and standing before her boss while taking another puff of breath to calm her racing heart. Her boss, Mr Frank Okoji was in his usual position and looking as elegant as always. He raised a brow at her direction, wondering what she could be up to just standing there."Good morning sir" said Aria with her usual composed voice."Good morning miss Davis. What can I do for you today?" He continued to stare at her but she said nothing but instead, gave the envelope in her hand another gentle squeeze."Are you okay? You look tense!" He asked still staring at her."I'm fine. I just came in to hand this in personally before leaving" she took a step forward and reached out with the envelope but he made no attempt to grab it from her outstretched hand.He looked skeptical.
" What is that if I many ask?"Aria hesitated for a moment before answering. "It's my resignation letter. Am leaving the company""What do you mean, you are leaving the company and for Christ sake, who said you can just resign because I don't remember asking for that thing in your hand! So do you mind explaining?" Mr Frank had half yelled and asked at the same time."No one asked me to leave. It was my own decision to do so and I will ask that you respect that and grant me this request by approving it"He only scoffed at her reply before leaning back against his headrest. He also seemed to be studying her with intense expression."I see that you are not aware of the company's policy do you miss Davis?" He asked her with a raised brow.Aria only shook her head in reply before saying. "I'm not even aware we have one that is directly tied to an employee resignation""Well, now you do and it states that, any employee who wishes to resign from the company for whatever reason other than be told to do so will first and fore most have to submit a three months notice prior to their time of leaving and you haven't done that"Aria was quiet for a moment as she stood raking her brain, trying to process the information she has just been bombarded with. She couldn't even recall anyone giving her a written or verbal information stating such policy because in all her six years of working as a staff in that company, she hasn't come in contact with such.Unless he was making it up to keep her from leaving she thought in sheer realization."How come I was not aware of this so called policy until now?""That's because you didn't mention in your résumé that you would wake up one day and decide it's okay to just walk out of the company after everything it has given you" he said matter of fact-ly.For a moment there, Aria almost felt bad about wanting to quit her job. That very company has been nothing but good to her over the years and it will be a real shame to leave them without a tangible reason other than her desire to step out of her comfort zone and live a little.
Was that too much to ask for? But then again, her mind was already made up and it was not a question of indecision plugging her mind at this point.
'What if you are making the biggest mistake of your life?' Her subconscious had challenged her for the last time but she brushed it aside just as quickly as it had appeared on her mind.
She squared her shoulders and scoffed mentally at the thought itself.
Her boss noticed the scoff expression on her face and wondered if it was directed at him or the fact that she was having an internal battle within herself. Whatever it was, he wanted to find out as he leaned across his desk still studying her reaction. He wasn't about to let her get away with a felony against his company. Frank Okoji was a man whose intuitive nature had helped him out of a lot of financial potholes. At thirty five, he was already a force to reckon with_succeeding his late father as the CEO and raising it from the ashes of bankruptcy with the help of his ever ready assistant who also happened to be none other than Aria herself.
He has always counted on her efficiency at every turn with confidential information and now she was suddenly on the verge of walking out of his company just like that? This must be the working of his rival company since they can't bring him down.
"How much are they offering you to leave us?" He blurted out the question at her.
That question came as a shocker as Aria could only stare back at him in disbelief.
"Excuse me, what?"
"You heard me. How much are they offering you to switch over to their side. Tell me and I will double the amount for you"
Aria couldn't believe her ears a she stood gapping at him. Was he in anyway implying that she has been bribed by some God knows what company in order for her to betray him? Because that would be total absurdity. The fact that he could think that way about her, annoys her to no end.
She took a step closer to his desk and placed both palms against his desk with her eyes in the same level as his.
"I don't know where you got that absurd idea from but I'd like you to understand that, this is all me and no one is paying me to do otherwise" she took a short thoughtful pause for her word to sink in.
"You too can testify to this very fact. Six years is not six months and I have a clean record to back that up so you tell me if am capable of betraying you or not" Aria had ended with a smirk that was barely noticed, seeing how much of a fight was left in his features.
In as much as he would have loved to argue with all she had said, he knew she was right. Aria was not that type of person. He was just hurt she was leaving without any tangible reason.
He picked up the letter lying against his desk and read through it before placing it back into the little envelope housing it a while ago.
"Alright then, am going to take this as you being foolish and in need of a break so take a month off if you want and after that time elapses and you still want to leave then I will gladly sign it".
"That won't be necessary because my mind is already made up"
She took a puff of breath and took a step back . After realizing that her mind was already made up, he resulted to asking her a less complicated question.
"I see, so what kind of life will you have after you leave here. A fulfilled jobless life or there is something else you want to share with me"
"Let me worry about that sir and just for the record, there is much more to life than work work work and work and as long as you are seated in that comfortable chair of yours, I doubt you will will ever understand. And as for the documents I was handling. I already had them placed in the top shelf drawer and even brief your secretary as well just in case you need some form of assistant" she ended with a sweet little smile.
"I will take my leave now" she didn't even make it to the door before his voice stopped her midway.
Frank Okoji got up in all his seven feet glory and walked over to where she stood staring back at him.
"So you are really leaving?" His voice barely audible as he stood only a breath away from her face.
Frank was standing too close for comfort at this point and it was making her really uncomfortable. If only her feet could just move an inch away from him. But she was frozen by the proximity of his presence for anything to function well.
When she finally snapped out of whatever was holding her captive, she stammered back a reply at him before looking away.
"Yes....yes i am leaving"
He took another inche closer. Aria could feel the strong alluring scent of his perfume pulling her in and causing her to grow weak around the knees.
What could be happening?
Aria has been in this man presence almost every single day for over six years and never once have they been this close in proximity.
And for the first time in six years, Frank was staring right into those brown eyes that has always been hidden behind those overly sized lens of hers and they looked quite pretty if not perfect just hanging loosely across the bridge of her small pointy nose.
She gluped down nervously as his eyes darted to her rosy red lips and lingered there for far too longer than necessary.
Damn!
Why was he staring at her that way!
Before she could process an answer, she heard his deep voice pulling her out of her imagination and back to reality."I asked you a question and you haven't answered" he stated.
"I'm sorry what? I wasn't paying attention"
He gave a short chuckle and reached out a hand and held her chin and causing her to shiver internally. "I asked if there is nothing I can do or say that would make you change your mind about leaving?"
Aria could see the desperation in his eyes as they kept staring at each other.
This man would do anything for his company not because he cared about anyone or anything for that matter and she wasn't about to be deceived either.
She was doing this for herself and nothing and no one will get in her way. Absolutely no one. Not even this handsome man standing before her who thinks he can change her mind with a flick of his smile.
Aria reached up and picked his hand off her chin with a tight smile before responding.
"No Sir, am afraid there is nothing anyone can do or say to change my mind on this matter. Am really done!"
She took in his facial expression for a split second and said,"Goodbye".
** Aria rushed out through the door before he would change his mind and try to stop her again and headed straight to her corner where her things were already arranged inside a small brown box to be carried away. She continued to pant nervously as she leaned against her desk, trying to steady her breath a bit. Straightening up to her full length with a new kind of fire burning in her chest. She picked up her box and turned to walk away and stopping only to say her final goodbye to her follow colleagues who were more than shock to hear about her decision before heading out. Once outside the building, Aria was beaming with happiness. She has never felt so free in her entire life as she continued to walk towards the direction of her car. Her feet was light on the ground as it hit each pavement outside in the garage. She was practically floating at that moment. Aria felt like a caged bird that has finally been set free to sore high
*This particular morning was just like any other in the Okoji's enterprise. The only difference was the overwhelming tension looming around in the air. There was no indication that something off the radar had happened in the company to put their boss in such a bad mood other than the departure of one of their favorite colleague Aria.Whispers and rumors seemed to be going from mouth to ears among the staffs, each wondering if the tension with their boss was because of Aria's departure from the company or something bad had happened and could make them loose their job as well. Some of them had rumored that she left because she was fired even though she has done nothing wrong while others were adamant on the fact that she left because she couldn't take his bossy attitude anymore. Some have always wondered how she was able to survive all those years working in such close proximity with someone as demanding as their
Aria's POV. ** *It took Aria exactly three days after the encounter with her mother before she finally summed up courage and spoke with her father over the phone again. Surprisingly enough, her father was rather understanding and patient while she tried to explained her reason for doing what she did without him feeling her reason are completely delusional. He only advised her against the consequence of her actions just in case she hasn't thought of it yet. He even asked that she travel home for a visit because it was obvious she was going through a rough patch in her life and needed her family to be there for her but Aria couldn't have it his way no matter how tempting that sounded like. She wanted to do things for herself this time without anyone advising or telling her what and what not to do. Going home to her family is totally out of the equation eve
** Aria drove all the way to the island where the bar is located. The bar happens to be a normal zone where people go out with friends to drink during the day but at night_it's a different ball game. Housing all the night crawler in Lagos who like to party from dusk till dawn. Aria had to park at the far end of the parking space due to how crazily parked the place was. She looked herself over in the rearview mirror, making sure her makeup was still in tact before she got down and adjusted her gown a bit before walking towards the entrance. Loud music was booming from inside as she proceeded further into the building. She retrieved her ID from her clutched purse and handed it to the bouncer at the door before she was allowed to walk inside. Aria took a deep breath to steady her mind the moment her eyes settled on the crowd of people scattered inside the slightly dim hall.
**"Miss Davis?" His voice resounded in her ears yet again and jolted her back to reality. Her eyes traveled from his face down to his fingers that were tightly wrapped around her wrist before settling back on his face again in disbelief. Aria was a nervous wreck at this point as they stood staring at each other. "How_how did you?" She began to stammer but he caught her off guard with a question of his own as he pulled her another step closer. "I should be asking you the same question Miss Davis but_" he paused and looked at her more intently and even sniffed the air around her. "Are you drunk?" He asked her with a frown before releasing his grip around her wrist. "Me drunk?" Aria had asked with a giggle and staggered backward, away from his intimidating presence but still close enough to smell his cologne. She could recognized it an
**Aria lay coiled up in this king size bed that was just so extra soft and comfortable, enveloping her in this warm bubble and luring her senses into a much deeper slumber. Speak of serenity. She snuggled closer into the warm duvet wrapped around her and signed in comfort before she quickly dozed off again. Fifteen minutes later, she was startled by a sudden movement beside her and was jolted a little but not enough to wake up as she only rolled over on her side and continued to sleep peacefully. Jezz... It wasn't long before she felt something poking her from behind and not withstanding, she scooted towards the edge and just kept sleeping_not willing herself to be bothered at all by whatever the heck that was. She was sure the world was still fast asleep for her to be awake. After all, she ha
** Not once did she look back or bother to listen to whatever he has to say next as she kept rushing out with quick steps. All she could think about was getting as far away from him as possible. Aria has been scarred for life!Fifteen minutes down the road and outside the building, she was seen waving down a taxi to get her home. It was already 7:30am and the sun was yet to crawl out of its hiding place giving her a chance to get home before her nosy neighbours does. Once she was seated at the back seat of the taxi, and even told the driver where she was going. She just leaned back against the side window not willing her mind to dwell on anything else. The last thing she remembered was Lizzy begging her to stay a little longer with her at the bar last night and nothing else. It was as if a thick dark fog was hovering around in her head and clouding her memory from peeping through.
** "What are you doing here?" "Can I come in?" Frank asked with a puff of breath. Aria only scoffed at his audacity. "Can you come in you say?_how did you even find me?" "Please! Just hear me out" he begged and took an inch closer and causing her to back away from him in fright. Aria could barely stand the man presence not to mention having him another inches closer. Her decision to unlock her front door was a bad one she regretted every bit of it. "If you are here to talk about what happened between us then just go away. I just want to forget it ever happened so please spare me the details" She was about to close the door at his face before he reached out and stopped her half way. "No_wait please! Just give me some few minute. That's all I need" She was momentarily lost in her own t
Seven years has gone by so quickly_and nothing has changed with the Okoji's as they seemed to be growing side by side and deeper in love with each other with each passing day.Frank was still the perfect husband and father to their daughter. Even his staffs at the office could swear that he was now a better boss than what he used to be. With the new promotional policy that include a fat cheque and family trip to vacation outside the country during the holiday season was enough to make him the best employer of each year.To say everything was moving on well was an understatement. Their lives was close to being perfect.Aria on the other hand would visit her parent occasionally with her daughter so she could get to meet her cousins and grandparent. She decided to quit her job at the publishing firm at some point just so she could focus more on spending as much time with her family as she possibly could while taking up writing as a side hobby. Her litt
Thirty minutes later, Frank walked into the private room where Aria was admitted and placed little Evergreen who was still sleeping in her carrier on the sofa right beside the bed.Feeling overwhelmed and emotional, he plopped down beside her on the bed before caressing the soft skin on her cheek. The heart monitor was beeping as if it was counting her heart beat on a steady repeat. Her oxygen tube was sticking out of her nose uncomfortably. Aria chest was barely rising and falling under the sheet she was nicely tucked into.Aria looked more asleep than in a coma. Her thick mass of brown hair was brushed backward and hidden under a blue hair net to avoid getting in the way.Her skin look really pale without getting much sunlight as she has been kept in that room for way too long now. The white curtains covering the window was half drawn to allow only a bit of air into the room.Frank took hold of her IV free hand in his and gave it a little s
*Frank felt awfully uncomfortable as he sat between his mother and best friend in the nearly filled courtroom with a clenched jaw that clearly expressed his dislike for being there. He rather be home with his daughter or at the hospital with Aria but that moment was because of her and missing out on the final court hearing against her captor was not an option he'd like to consider. To think that Henry was pleading not guilty to all the charges levied against him, causes every blood running through his vein to boil with anger and the hair on the back of his neck to stand on edge.Henry has no single act of remorse in his heart not even after all he has done.Aria was in a pitiful condition because of him and it would be over his dead body to see him walk out of there, a complete free man. He already made sure of that by hiring one of the best attorney he could find. His lawyer, barrister Roland_ has assured him that Henry wasn't gettin
Frank sat with blood shot eyes as he searched Sandra's face for anything that proofs that all she had told him was nothing but pure lies from the pit of hell but the more he looked at her, the more he realized it was nothing but the absolute truth. His hands was balled into a tight fist by his side with muscles trailing the walls of his neck at the shocking revelation.Frank was beyond livid at that point as he was struggling against whatever anger that was coursing through his veins at none other than himself."How?" He growl at her."It's all started when you left for London and your father offered me a job to be his secretary. I thought he did it because of how close we were but sooner than later_I found out his real reason for doing it" she took a pause before she continued. Her eyes barely meeting his due to the shame and guilt that was all too visible to the eyes."I tried everything possible to resist him but not for long because you were go
**It's been two whole month already and Aria still hasn't woken up from her coma. Even though the doctors had assured Frank over a month back, that her chances of waking up was pretty high but even at that, she still hasn't shown any sign of waking up other than the little twitching of her hand that had occurred more than twice during his frequent visit. The doctor had explained it to be her reflexes but Frank would rather not give up on her recovery_reflexes or not. That was the only proof that she was still in there and could also hear him talking to her too.Frank made sure to visit every single day as the hospital was practically his second home at that point. He spend most of his time there beside her bed and making sure she was getting the treatment she needed. He wanted to be right there when she wakes up. The first person she looks at and have her know how much he has missed her and finally be able to see her beam her charming smile at him
Frank had arrived with Aria back at the hospital some minutes later and refused to leave her side even for a second as he was mounted protectively by the door of the theatre. Both his mother and friends stood beside him in silent. No one was willing to say any word out loud as their head was hanging low in silent prayers for everything to turn out well. They had endured so much during this few days and couldn't bear to face any more than they already had been made to go through."She will be alright man" Kelvin had assured him with a gentle tap to his already tense shoulders.Frank only gave a small nod in acknowledgement. Probably too overwhelmed to say anything as he continued to glance ahead.Lizzy stood by the far left beside Frank's mother with tense shoulders. She could barely look Frank in the eyes when she was let in as well. Her guilt was eating away at her grief.Lizzy couldn't believe she had played a part in her friend's misfortu
**Frank continued to pull relentlessly at his restraint over and over again while trying to break free and reach for Aria who had passed out cold on the bed at this point. She hasn't lifted a finger since Henry had abruptly left her on the bed and hurried out the door without a word.Frank knew something has gone wrong and was dying to get to her and began dragging the chair he has been tied to across the floor in a bit to get to her. Even though he kept calling at her, he wasn't sure if she could even hear him which only fueled his need to break free.He was half way across to her when Henry returned and rushed over to her side on the bed and scooped her into his arms for a moment before placing her back gently against the bed."What's happening to her" Frank had hissed angrily at him but Henry gave no reply as his only focus was on Aria and getting her to respond somehow. He cursed under his breath a few times after he felt
*Aria has no idea how long Henry has been gone but she knew he'd be back soon and had to move faster. She hurried back to the bathroom and searched for anything sharp but found only an old toothbrush stuck at the trash can and quickly retrieved it.Breaking off the edge against the hard floor, she rushed over to the door and began to use the edge to pick the locks in hope it would come off.She could feel the hard imprint of the locks pressure, pressing against her palm but she was far from giving up.It was either now or never. She was half drenched in sweat and her own tears by the time the lock finally came off. Her joy was short lived when she felt another wave of pain shot through her and making sure to draw a wail of agony from her lips. The contraction was becoming more frequent than normal. She noticed the warm liquid trailing down her thighs and knew her water has broken. The inevitable was about to happen and
*"So where are we travelling to" Aria had asked Henry out of the blue still munching on her chicken.A little smile creep up across his face at her question. He wasn't expecting it but he was happy she was showing interest in his proposal. He was expecting her to resist some more and not agreed readily. But either way he was eager to give a reply."We can travel to anywhere you like. Just say the word and we are out of here" he spoke enthusiastically."So you are telling me that you'd throw away your career and whole life just to run away with me?""Not exactly but for now, yes!. We can always settle somewhere and I could start up a clinic there" he explained with a thoughtful look in his eyes.Aria only replied with a small nod. Still deep in thought. She was processing a lot at that moment without giving away anything. If Henry was willing to give up everything then it could only mean one thing. He won't hesita
