Karael – the angel who has the power to fight demons.
If before, Chaise was pestering me, pretending to be cute and teasing me around school, he was now staying away. I could still see him watching me during lunch or on the grounds when he was hanging out with some friends and I happened to pass by. I couldn’t make out the expression on his face. He looked genuinely hurt… or pissed.
“Did you do something to Chaise?” Denise asked me one time during lunch. I was sitting with her at the far corner of the cafeteria. Chaise was in the center table with all the other popular boys and girls.
When I looked at Chaise, he was staring at me. He was wearing a red jacket over his hooded sweater.
I stared at Denise for a while and then I shrugged.
“You know… ever since he came to school, he was always watching you. He looked really interested.”
“Seriously?” I asked Denise
“Help!” I shouted once again. One of my attackers was pulled behind by a strong force, and the next thing I saw was his body falling to the ground. As he struggled to stand back up, the other guy released me and went for their attacker. I was free. That’s when I saw the guy who came to my aid. He had his back on me. His head was hidden under a gray hood. But I couldn’t have mistaken it. I know it was him. That boy who followed me. The one I called my stalker. He was driving a black Porsche this time. He fought off my attackers almost effortlessly. I turned to grab my bag and started to run. I heard a sharp scratching sound. I stopped to look behind me and saw that one of the guys was down on the ground now. But the other one had a knife with him and he purposefully scratched the hood of the car of my rescuer. “Fuck!” I heard somebody curse. It could be my rescuer when he saw what the guy did to his Porsche. Panic was still gripping my senses. I did th
Raguel - the angel who watches over other angelsThe minute I locked Alibri’s door that night, I saw Chaise standing in front of his pickup. He usually drove his Porsche to school, but I didn’t really have to ask what happened to that car. He must have sent it to the garage. I could only imagine the sharp dent my attacker left on it with his army knife. We didn’t speak on the way home, like I didn’t know what to say to him. When he stopped in front of my house, I thanked him and he smiled at me. He didn’t leave until he was sure I was safely inside. The next day, he sat with me and Denise in the cafeteria. Denise looked at him as if he grew an extra head.“Seriously, leave so we can talk about you,” Denise said blatantly.I glared at her.Chaise turned to me with a smug smile. “So… you talk about me?” he asked.“No!” I replied a little too
Hamaliel – the angel of logic. He brings clarity and harmony to our thoughts.I felt numb, my brain refused to function, my knees felt like they wouldn’t be able to bear my weight any minute. The hall was abuzz with people laughing, chatting, shrieking and singing. But I wasn’t hearing, wasn’t seeing anything. The world seemed to be a blur and everything was moving in slow motion. I felt like I was in a tragic film. And the only difference between a heartbreaking movie scene and my reality was the cinematic score.I blindly walked towards the girls’ room and locked myself up in a cubicle. He’s back. He’s perfectly fine!I felt that moment of weakness as happiness, sadness and relief enveloped me all at once. I silently let go of the tears that I was holding back since I saw his face again.Hunter made it!His operation was successful. He could be whol
“Did you have a fight or something?” Chaise asked. “He sounded like he wanted to ram his car into a tree.”Denise shook her head. “We did not even speak to each other the whole way. He’s just a jerk sometimes. Well, he always seemed angry. He outcasts himself, engages in fights. And in his condition… he should have been very careful.”“Condition?” Chaise echoed as we all went inside my house.I closed the door behind me. I didn’t have to wait for Denise’s response. I know what she meant by Hunter’s condition. He just had a successful corneal transplant. He should take care of his eyes because a simple head trauma alone might cause him to lose his eyesight again.“Hunter had a car accident that killed my aunt, his mom,” Denise said. “It… blinded him.”Chaise’s eyes widened. “Blind? He didn’t look blind to me.”
He looked like he found it literally annoying to have a little bit of physical contact with me.“Are you going to collide with me every single day throughout the entire school year?” he asked with a bored expression on his face. “Let me know the program, so I’ll be prepared.”“I’m… I’m sorry,” I said in a weak voice. He turned away from me and scooped himself some mashed potato. I was frozen in my place, unable to make myself move. I just stood there staring at him with a dazed expression on my face. When he turned back to me, he saw that I hadn’t budged. He raised a brow and then as if realizing I wasn’t going to move soon, he moved past me and never looked back.I stared at the food in front of me, not really finding anything interesting to eat now. I had completely lost my appetite.“Hey, dude,” a guy beside me said. “You’re holding up the line.&rdqu
Leliel– an angel protector of the night. The minute I called him, he stopped what he was doing but he didn’t turn around to face me. He took something out from his locker.“What do you want?” he asked in a cold voice.Yes. What do I want?I drew in a deep breath again. “Do you… do you know who I am?” It was the only question I could think of… simple, short and direct to the point. He paused for a second, but he still didn’t turn to look at me. I waited for like an eternity before he closed his locker with a stronger force than required and then finally he turned to me. A cold expression was pasted on his face. He stared at me for a moment with narrowed eyes, as if he was trying his best to recognize me, remember me.“No,” he finally said shaking his head. “Apparently, I don’t know you at all.” I thought my heart broke at that instanc
My heart pounded in my chest at the mere mention of his name. My knees already felt weak and I was sure that my cheeks were turning pinkish. I was quite certain that I wouldn’t be able to eat dinner properly if Hunter was sitting a few feet away from me.“Can we eat first and you call him later?” Denise asked, rolling her eyes.“Denise…” her mother sighed. “You know… Hunter’s having a difficult time coping up with everything. He constantly needs warm company, right Alice?”Susan looked at me, expecting me to agree with her. “I… I guess.” I tried to smile.“Have dinner now. I will call Hunter,” Susan said, not giving any of us time to argue.Denise groaned when her mother was gone. She pulled me to sit on one of the chairs. “Come, eat quickly so we can go to my room!”I couldn’t agree with her more. I was hungry too and I knew that t
Zaphkiel - archangel whose name means "the knowledge of God."My heart pounded inside my ribcage and I thought I forgot how to breathe. Even without looking, I knew what… or rather, who I bumped into.I stood still, unable to move, afraid to make a sound. I felt him move in front of me. He didn’t take a step back though. Instead, I felt his hand entrap mine against his bare chest, holding me in place. Then, I felt his fingers graze my cheek, almost touching my scars. Then his hand touched my nape lightly. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. His touch was electric and my knees were slowly turning to jelly, I was almost sure I wouldn’t be able to support my own weight any minute. In the dark… maybe Hunter would remember what it was like between us. Maybe when he couldn’t see my face, his touch would remember who I once was in his life.I feel his breath against my cheek. It smelled fresh and mint
I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out. Hunter took a step forward and pulled me into his arms. He studied my face for a moment. I was afraid that my cheeks were crimson red, and he could see right through me. “Angel…” he whispered. “Are you okay?” I nodded. He titled my chin up so I could look at him. “Hey, this is me. You can tell me anything.” “I know,” I sighed. I smiled and kissed him on the cheek. “I’m okay.” I gently pulled away from him and then walked towards the bathroom. “Angel,” he called out and I turned back to him. “If it bothers you, I can sleep in the next room.” I shook my head. “No. It’s fine.” He walked towards me, giving me a reassuring smile. He wrapped his arms around my waist, looked into my eyes and said, “I don’t want you to feel any pressure, angel. I didn’t bring you here so I could seduce you.” My heart stopped beating altogether. “I just want us to have some alone
Chamuel – the archangel of peaceful relationshipsMy life for the following months had been pure bliss. I was not exactly invisible to the people in school because Hunter was always beside me. And he was definitely not invisible—especially to the girls. I knew they still couldn’t believe that I could score a guy like Hunter. I didn’t care what they thought. As long as they kept their thoughts—especially their limbs—to themselves and leave us the hell alone.Hunter never missed picking me up in the morning and driving me back from school every night. He was a way better guardian angel than Chaise ever was.It took a good twenty-four hours for Denise to recover from her shock when Hunter and I showed up in their house, holding hands. We finally explained to her how we first met at CRC when Hunter was still blind and how we fell in love.“She was the reason why I agreed for a transplant. I love
“Who me? No, I’m not…” I started but he silenced me with a kiss.“You are,” he said. “Why do you think I punched Don Winston in the first place?”“Because he poured ketchup all over me?”“And he didn’t just do that to embarrass you. Guys have different ways of expressing a crush, angel. Winston’s brain was just tiny. He hadn’t graduated from kindergarten tactics yet.”“Seriously?” I asked in shock.“Seriously. And since you played in that concert, the list of guys I would threaten to stay away from you has increased ten-folds.”“Lie!”“I wish it was,” he muttered under his breath. He took my hand in his and intertwined our fingers. As he opened the doors to Burger Inn, he raised our hands to his lips and gave my fingers a kiss, deliberately letting everybody see.I felt
Ariel – The "lion of God", an angel of protectionWith that, Hunter took the phone from me and said, “Stop interrupting my date, cuz. Tell your mom I would be home late. Talk to you later.” And he hung up on her.I groaned. “She is so going to kill me!”He laughed. “She’s been trying to do that to me for the last seventeen years but so far she hasn’t succeeded yet. Don’t worry. She’s not very good with assassination plots.”I laughed and then I rested my head on his shoulder again. After a minute, my phone beeped. It was Denise: Seriously, Alice? Hunter? I smiled. Hunter took my phone from me and typed a message: Seriously, Cuz. Me. – HDenise: You two have some serious explaining to do. I wanna kill both of you!Hunter chuckled.“You’re not going to reply for me?”He shook his head. &ldqu
Raphael – the Archangel who brings healingAlice.I couldn’t find my voice. Tears rolled down my cheeks. I couldn’t understand why or how it all happened. But the truth was right before my eyes.Hunter slowly approached me. The expression on his face was soft and gentle. Gone was the look of disgust or anger that he usually wore whenever he saw me.“Hunter? You? You were the guy who always followed me home? You were the one who saved me from those potheads?”He reached out to wipe my tears with his fingers. Then he nodded gently.“How?”He took a deep breath. “When I came back, the first thing that I did was look for you. But you moved and didn’t leave a forwarding address. I didn’t have your number. I have a faint idea how you look like. But other than that, I had no clue how to really find you.“When Denise mentioned that sh
I remembered before I left, I asked her to write a diary for me so I could read it when I return.I felt like my heart just broke inside my ribcage. She had kept her promise.I took the diary and climbed up on the bench to sit on top of the table, facing the lake.I flipped through the pages and started reading the words that she wrote for me.Dear Hunter…I don’t know how long I sat there, reading every word. She wrote me almost every day, telling me everything that happened to her since I left.Dear Hunter,Today, we needed to move houses. Meredith could no longer afford this house. I totally understand that. My mother didn’t exactly leave her with a huge inheritance. I was just worried about how you would find me. I didn’t know how to reach you so I could give you my new address. But I know… you would find me. No matter what. We would
Gabriel – the messenger and communicatorHunter. It hadn’t been fair that Allison and I lost so much of the time we could have been together. We could have been happy since the day I returned from my surgery. But instead, I spent a great deal of time nursing my broken heart because I thought she had moved on without me. I thought she didn’t keep her promise to wait for me.But we were both victims of Anderson’s lie and treachery. He was so desperate to have her, he resorted to stupid methods to get her attention.I remembered when I was trapped in the cabin with Allison, I was still so angry… at her… at Anderson… at the world. I was harboring all these ill feelings because I couldn’t accept the fact that I went through all the trouble of a corneal transplant for her, only to find that she was already dating somebody else. But in spite of my anger, I wasn’t
When I came back from the lake house, my diary was gone. Chaise had all night to go through my stuff if Denise wasn’t looking. He’d seen me write on it before. He must have recognized it. I guess curiosity got the better of him.If he started reading it, then would he know… he would know who I was writing it for. He would know who the guy he was hoping to replace in my heart was.I took the bus to CRC and got there in fifteen minutes. The moment I stepped into the grounds, memories of Hunter flooded back to me. I remembered how we fell in love in this unlikely place. Here, we both found the will to fight and live our lives again. Here lies a world where only the two of us existed… old souls, young hearts. As I approached the gate, I felt somebody pull my hand. I turned back and found Chaise staring back at me.“Chaise!”He pulled me towards the parking lot, without saying a word.“Chaise, are you o
Raziel – the archangel who is the keeper of divine mysteries and secrets.I didn’t see Chaise all Monday. He didn’t come up to me to my locker in between classes, did not join Denise and me for lunch. I didn’t see him even when I headed to work in the afternoon.Fortunately, for the whole day, I also didn’t see Hunter. I guess it was just my day off from worrying about either of them. That for once, I had the day for myself to figure out what I needed to do.When I kissed Hunter again, it felt the same as before. Electricity radiated from his lips to mine. It felt exhilarating and exciting… tormenting and heartbreaking all at the same time. It brought back all the memories of our time together. He made me feel safe and secure… and even if the world around us was full of danger, he still made me feel like I shouldn’t care. As long as I was in his arms… everything was going to be okay.Meredi
