ANYA

The night was alive with music and chatter, but all my focus was on Hunter. As I sat on his lap, I moved to the beat of the music with deliberate purpose, swaying my hips sensually. His eyes were locked on mine, and for a moment, there was just silence between us before the faintest smile tugged at his lips.

“You’re putting in so much effort,” he said, his voice almost inaudible over the loud music.

“And is it working?” I whispered, leaning close.

He hesitated, but his hands rested lightly on my waist. “You’re trouble, you know that?”

“Maybe,” I said with a playful shrug, “but you seemed to be in need of a little trouble, tonight.”

I let the rhythm guide me, letting my movements speak for themselves. Slowly, the lines on his face softened. He didn’t just smile...he laughed, his striking features making my heart flutter. By the time the tension in his shoulders melted away, I knew I had him exactly where I wanted.

“You’re dangerous,” he murmured, shaking his head.

HUNTER I walked into my office, and saw her, just as I'd expected. Anya was standing with her back to me, searching my office desperately. She froze the moment she heard my voice. "Are these yours?" I asked, holding up the small cameras in my hand. Her head snapped up, her wide eyes locking with mine. The color drained from her face, and she looked as if the ground might swallow her whole. She didn’t answer immediately, and I felt a knot in my chest. I hoped this would make her come clean before me and bridge the gap between us. "I can explain," she whispered, her voice barely audible. I nodded, keeping my expression calm. "I know," I said softly. "That’s why I’m asking. Why don’t you sit down and explain it to me?" I moved past her, placing the cameras on my desk before settling into my chair. I gestured to the chair across from me, but she didn’t move. Her hands clutched the edge of the desk like it was the only thing keeping her upright. I waited, giving her time to

HUNTER Anya's confession left me raw, exposed, and burning all at once. She stood there, her love for me laid bare in the way her eyes clung to mine, the way her voice had shaken when she said, 'I want to be yours, completely.' The words were still echoing in my chest when I stood up and closed the space between us. I didn’t speak...I couldn’t. My hands found her waist, pulling her close, and I kissed her like I needed her to breathe. Her lips were warm and soft, parting against mine as a quiet gasp escaped her. Her fingers clutched at my shoulders, and I felt the desperation in her touch, the way she melted into me like she was surrendering everything. I kissed her harder, deeper, needing to taste every inch of her love. When I pulled back, her cheeks were flushed, her lips swollen, her breathing shallow. She looked up at me with so much vulnerability it made my chest ache. “Hunter,” she whispered, her voice soft. I didn’t answer. Instead, I bent down, scooping her up into

CROSS I sat in the living room of the apartment I shared with my sister, the weight of the revolver familiar in my hand. I spun it lazily, the cold metal catching the dim light. My mind wasn’t on the gun, though...it was on the chaos I was about to set into motion. Across from me, Bernice sat in her usual spot, her sharp eyes fixed on me. She had that curious look on her face, like she was waiting for me to give her the next piece of the puzzle. “So,” she said finally, breaking the silence. “What do you plan on doing?” I smirked, the corner of my mouth curling just enough to make her lean in slightly, eager for an answer. “I’ve thought about it,” I said, my voice calm, almost casual. “For our plans to work, someone has to die.” Her interest was piqued instantly. “Who will it be?” she asked, her voice steady but with a hint of excitement. “Tell me.” I took my time, letting the suspense build. “Not Anya,” I said, watching her expression shift slightly. “Not yet. CROSS Evans' hands trembling as I held his phone out to him. The barrel of my revolver pointed directly at his chest, a silent reminder of the consequences of defiance. “Unlock it,” I ordered, my voice cold and steady. He hesitated for a moment, his eyes darting between me and the gun. “Now,” I snapped, my patience wearing thin. His fingers fumbled as he obeyed, unlocking his phone with a shaky swipe. I leaned over him, scrolling through his contacts until I found the number I needed. Pressing it, I handed the phone back to him. “You’re going to make this call,” I said, my tone leaving no room for argument. “And you’re going to say exactly what I tell you to say. Nothing more, nothing less.” Evans swallowed hard, nodding quickly. His voice trembled as the line connected. “Hello? Hey, it’s me,” he said, following my instructions as he read from the paper I had given him. “I… I need you to take your phone to Anya. She's currently at the library. Please, it’s important. I n

  • Will You Marry Me?   065: Help Her

HUNTER I was buried in paperwork, my desk cluttered with files and my phone buzzing intermittently with emails. I was on the verge of signing a very important deal and didn't trust anyone to handle it better than I would. It kept me so focused until a message notification broke my concentration. I picked up my phone, glancing at the screen, and froze. 'Please help me, I'm in danger, someone wants to kill me. He kidnapped me, took me to an abandoned school in the outskirts of town and I just managed to send this message to you. I don't want to die. Please save me, Hunter.' The message was from Anya. My heart stopped for a moment, then began to pound so hard I could feel it in my ears. I reread the message, hoping I’d misunderstood, but the words didn’t change. Danger. Someone wanted to kill my wife. I tried to steady my breathing, gripping the phone tightly. Who would dare? I was sure no one would ever touch her. No one had that kind of nerve—not in my city. I’d cut off my

HUNTER The sight of Anya’s phone lying on the ground suddenly caught my attention. My heart hammered in my chest as I stared at it, questions flooding my mind. "Why is her phone here? What’s happening?" I was about to force Evans awake and ask him when a scream shattered the silence. Anya. Her voice made my heart skip a beat, raw and terrified. I looked up quickly, my breath catching when I saw her. Relief washed over me, so powerful it almost knocked me to my knees. “Anya!” I exclaimed, sprinting toward her, my hands still covered in Evans’ blood. She stopped in her tracks, her wide eyes locking on me for the briefest moment before she rushed past me. My arms reached out instinctively, but before I could even think of hugging her, she shoved me aside and ran straight to Evans. “Evans!” she cried, collapsing onto the floor beside him. Her hands trembled as she touched his face, her voice cracking with panic. “No! No, no, no! Evans, wake up! What happened? Who did this to y

HUNTER I stared at Anya, my heart racing as her words sliced through me. Her voice cracked. “I have to get Evans to the hospital right away,” she said, trembling. I watched as she patted her pockets frantically, but sighed and gave up when she recalled that she wasn't with her phone. Then her gaze shifted, and she saw it lying on the floor beside Evans. Her eyes darted toward me, filled with suspicion and hurt. She picked up the phone with trembling hands, and I could see the realization settle on her face. She thought I had taken it. She thought I had done this to Evans to stop him from reaching her. My chest tightened as I saw her put the pieces together in her mind, pieces that painted me as the villain. “Anya,” I said softly, stepping much closer to her, but she recoiled, her eyes burning with fury. She was already dialing when I reached out and grabbed her hand. “I already called 911,” I said firmly, holding her gaze. “How can I believe you?” she snapped, pulli

ANYA I sat by Evans’ side, clutching his hand as if my grip alone could keep him tethered to this world. Tears streamed down my face, hot and relentless, blurring my vision. The beeping of the monitors was the only sound in the room, a cruel reminder that he was still alive....but barely. I couldn’t stop crying. The weight of it all crushed me, suffocating me with every breath. My mind wouldn’t stop replaying everything, every memory, every moment that had led to this. I thought back to that night at the reunion party. I had been so angry with Evans when he told me he loved me. I could still see the hurt in his eyes, the way he’d looked at me like I was breaking his heart with the words I said. I pushed him away then, refusing to deal with the truth of his feelings. And now here he was, lying unconscious, fighting for his life. I remembered the day Hunter had pointed a gun at Evans. • Will You Marry Me?   EPILOGUE

THREE MONTHS AGO Maya Suarez sat cross-legged on the carpet, helping her 12-year-old sister, Star, with her homework. Laughter bubbled between them as they joked over math problems in Star’s brightly colored room. For a brief moment, everything felt normal and safe. Then came a knock on the door. “Maya,” her stepmother’s shrill voice called. “Come out here. Now.” Maya stood up, exchanged a glance with Star, and stepped outside. Her heart sank the moment she saw him. Standing beside her stepmother was a man nearly twice her age—big-bellied, sweat-stained, and grinning beneath a thick mess of unkempt gray beard. His eyes were beady, too close together, and he looked her up and down with undisguised hunger. “What is this?” Maya asked flatly. “Cat?” Cat, her stepmother, beamed. “Maya, you remember I told you about the handsome man you’re going to marry? This is Angel. He came to see his bride. We’re going to start planning the wedding.” Maya recoiled. “What marriage? Liste

  • Will You Marry Me?   190: Because Of You

After Ruby accepted Hector’s proposal, he stood up, taking her with him, and crashed his lips against hers, pouring every ounce of love, pride, and joy into that kiss. Around them, the room erupted in claps and cheers. Carlos whistled, Hunter grinned and clapped with both hands, while even Manuel gave a crooked smile and joined in. And to Ruby’s surprise, Anya clapped the loudest. The moment Hector pulled back from the kiss, Anya squealed in delight and rushed toward Ruby. “I’m so excited! Welcome to the family!” she said, throwing her arms around Ruby. Ruby blinked, caught off guard. She’d seen Anya earlier, tucked slightly behind Hunter, but now seeing her up close, she was stunned by how young she looked. She smiled as she gently pulled back and glanced at the ring on Anya’s finger. “Wait… you’re married?” Ruby asked with a surprised laugh. “But you look so young!” Anya giggled. “I am! Nineteen years old and married to Hunter Steele.” She said it with pride, like a girl

  • Will You Marry Me?   189: One Month Later

Ruby couldn’t stop smiling as she held Hector’s hand, their fingers intertwined like they’d been molded that way from the start. The past one month had felt like a fairytale—a soothing balm to every scar life had left on her. She had never known peace could feel like this. Being with Hector was like waking up to sunlight after years of cold storms. He treated her like the most precious gem in the world, never raising his voice, never letting her lift a finger when he was around. He always knew exactly what she needed—even before she said it. He was soft with her in ways no one else had ever been. The man the world feared—the cold, ruthless mafia boss known for his brutality—became someone entirely different when he was with her. He was gentle, warm and patient. Even Camilla, who had once pointed a gun at Hector’s head, eventually had to admit that Hector brought out the best in Ruby—and perhaps, Ruby brought out the best in him too. Her father had adjusted well to the ne

Ruby clung to Hector’s chest, holding him tightly as sleep slowly overtook her. With her arms wrapped around him and his steady heartbeat beneath her ear, she drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep. By the time she opened her eyes again, the morning sun had already begun streaming through the curtains. She blinked a few times and reached across the bed—only to find it empty. She sat up immediately, heart racing. “Hector?” she called out, glancing around the room. “Hector?” Her voice wavered. Was it all a dream? Her hand flew to her lips—the place he had kissed her the night before. The warmth of his touch, the passion, the softness of his voice... it had all felt so real. Her eyes welled up with tears. “No,” she whispered, “It felt too real to be a dream.” Just then, the bathroom door opened. Hector stepped out with a towel slung around his waist, his hair damp and messy from a shower, water glistening across his chest. His skin was golden under the light, his sharp jawline

When Camila arrived home, the last thing she expected to see was Antonio leaning casually against her front door, arms crossed and a soft smile playing on his lips. For a moment, her heart softened at the sight of him—tall, and familiar. She walked up to him with a smile of her own and pulled him into a warm, slow kiss. He leaned into it, surprised but pleased. When they parted, he raised an eyebrow. "Okay," he said. "What was that for? You’re unusually sweet today. Should I be worried?" Camila chuckled as she fished out her keys. “I don’t know,” she said. “Maybe I’m just catching some of Ruby’s happiness. It’s contagious, I guess.” Antonio followed her inside, closing the door behind them. “Hmm. Ruby… happy,” he repeated with a dry laugh. “That’s good. Really good. But sometimes I wonder if you two came out of the same womb, with how strongly you feel about her.” Camila snorted as she dropped her bag by the couch. “You wouldn’t understand,” she said, walking into the kitche

Seeing Camila standing there with a gun pointed straight at Hector, Ruby instinctively stepped in front of him. “What are you doing?” she asked, her voice sharp and protective. Without hesitation, she moved forward and snatched the gun from Camila, tossing it across the room. Camila’s eyes widened in disbelief. “I should be the one asking you that! Why is this monster in your room?” Hector smirked from behind Ruby. “Camila,” he said calmly, “you know, I never got the chance to say I admire your loyalty. It’s… impressive.” Camila glared at him, then turned to Ruby. “What the hell is going on here? Are you seriously sitting with a ghost?” Hector, unbothered, sat down and crossed his legs, silently watching the drama unfold. Ruby took a breath. “I’ll explain everything. Hector survived, Camila. He’s been alive… and he’s been protecting me. He’s not here to hurt me. He saved me.” “I still don’t get it.” “The bottom line is…” Ruby hesitated, then looked straight at Camila.

After the passion was spent, Hector pulled away and slowly reached for his clothes. The heat between them had cooled, leaving behind an echo of everything they’d shared—everything they’d lost and what still lingered in the air like a ghost. Without a word, he began to dress, his movements quiet, detached, as though what had just happened didn’t exist or had never meant anything. Ruby lay there for a moment, watching him. Her heart pounded against her chest—not from desire anymore, but fear. Fear that this would be the last time she'd see him. Fear that this was goodbye. She quickly got out of bed, wrapping the sheet around her as she rushed to him, throwing her arms around his torso from behind, pressing her face against his bare back. “Please, Hector,” she whispered, her voice already breaking. “Please… don’t go.” Hector froze. He didn’t move and said nothing. She clutched him tighter, her arms trembling. “Don’t walk away from me. Not like this.” He gently pried her hands

The house was quiet. The kind of silence that didn’t bring peace but stirred everything he was trying to bury. Hector stood by the window of his study, arms folded tightly across his chest, staring out into the vast backyard that once reminded him of freedom. Now, it only reminded him of Ruby. A knock came on the door. “Come in,” Hector said, his voice flat. The door creaked open, and one of his trusted men stepped inside. He looked hesitant, like he wasn’t sure if he should speak. “Well?” “She came, boss,” the underling said quietly. “Ruby.” Hector didn’t flinch, but inside, something shifted. “She said… she needs to see you. Just once. She said it’s important. That if she sees you one more time, she’ll never bother you again.” He turned away from the window and sat on the edge of his desk, one hand rubbing his jaw. “Did she say what it was about?” “No. Only that it was important. She seemed sincere. Sad.” Of course she did."I told her you were dead, just as yo

Hector gently pried Ruby’s trembling hands away from his body, even though every cell in him ached to do the opposite—to turn around, pull her into his arms, and hold her close like he used to. But he didn’t. His voice was clipped, and unreadable. “I need to get rid of these bodies,” he said flatly, without looking at her. The moment she heard his voice, Ruby gasped sharply. It was like the air had been knocked out of her lungs. Her knees weakened, and her heart thumped wildly in her chest. It was him. It was really Hector. Alive. Breathing. Standing just inches from her. And yet… he wouldn’t even look at her. While her thoughts spun out of control—memories, regrets, guilt crashing all at once—Hector raised his phone to his ear and gave a cold order. “Come in. Bring two body bags with you.” Ruby remained frozen where she stood, staring at the blood pooling near her feet and the lifeless bodies of Eduardo and Selena. But none of it moved her.
