*Hidi*

The farewell party was small, but Hidi wasn’t too surprised. If not for the cold, the court would have been pretty much deserted. With the coronation over, most had departed back to their estates, a sad sight to see as Hidi enjoyed the parade of men.

It's not that Ana even thinks about these things, though. But that only makes it funnier. Hidi had to muse over how many worked so hard only to return with nothing.

There are a few who’ve stayed. Hidi noted the Sir Pendwick. He was now working for King Alexander, so he had to wait.

I wonder if that’s the only reason. Hidi caught the boy sneaking a stare at Ana. That alone was enough to satisfy her question.

“Little Ana,” Hidi chuckled.

“Did you say something?” Ana went, completely missing everything like always.

“Oh, nothing.” Hidi frowned as her maid waved her hand. The carriage was packed and ready. “It seems my time to go is near.”

How could she be so bored yet not want to leave? Hidi sighed.

*Belinda*Instead of being out on the platform, Belinda waited inside, where it was warm. It was rare for her to be so informal. But today, she would make an exception. After putting in so much effort to dress and apply her makeup to perfection, it would only be a shame to have it all go to waste. After all, the cold, damp air would do nothing but ruin her complexion. And that was the last thing Belinda wanted anyone to see after a week's journey. But that wasn’t the sole reason. The other reason was more complicated, but Belinda quickly pushed her feelings aside as the doors opened. It was time to start the act. And Belinda was up from her throne as the first, more consequential, guest came rushing in without a pause.“Hidi, ah, you’ve come at last.” Belinda opened her arms out for the giant “Belinda!” Hidi yelled at the top of her lungs before swooping down to crush her into an embrace. “Hidi?” For a moment, Belinda winced from the pain. Hidi seemed a little too excited and had

*Nicoli*God, he is persistent. Nicoli bit his lip. But they were almost there. “Your Majesty!?” Thomas breathed between running. “Please wait-”No way. Nicoli sped up a little more. He pulled Hidi’s hand closer as they made another turn.“Ha, this is fun!” Hidi giggled, thoroughly enjoying herself. She was grinning and not even haggard. “I love a game of tag.”“Tag?” What did she think this was?Just keep running. Nicoli decided whatever Hidi was thinking, or, better, not, it didn’t matter. He just needed to be the one to keep moving. There it is! His bedroom was now in sight. But could he get there before Thomas? “Your Majesty!?” Thomas called again just before the bump in the rug. A sharp cry ripped from his throat as he fell over.“Your Majesty?” Thomas groaned with pain. But he still tried to push himself up. “Please, let me assist-”“We’re fine!” Nicoli yelled back, taking the last steps. His hand immediately shot for the knob and pulled both of them inside.“Your majesty!”

*Ana*They should both be back by now. I look out the window at the gray clouds. It's been more than a week since they've gone. And things have returned to how they were. More or less.Save a few things. “I wish it would snow here.” I smile to myself, distracted.“Ana?” “Sorry,” I quickly return to what I was doing. “As I was saying, we will patrol the route here.” “Very well, Your Empress,” Admiral Nugen nods with approval as Sir Pendwick looks at the map. “I didn’t realize you were such a strategist, Your Empress”“I am?” The comment made me open my mouth, but I quickly corrected myself.” I mean, you think so?”“I do.” Sir Pendwick goes again with a little smile. “I think you are great at it.”“Oh, do you?” Mykhol says in a tone that makes Pendwick look down.“I must say it’s not bad,” Admiral Nugen says.“How did you come up with all of this?” “I have been taking ideas from the old military journals.” “You mean you read those old tomes?” Sir Pendwick looks generally i

*Nicoli*“Happy birthday, your majesty!” The room erupted in cheers. Everyone looked so happy. It was Nicoli’s birthday, and everyone seemed to be in good spirits. Even Hidi was enjoying herself.“Yes, Happy birthday!” Hidi’s voice went loud before she moved to take more wine. How does she manage to drink so much? Nicoli couldn’t keep up with her, and he had been drinking wine since he could remember.Giants are scary like that, I guess. Nicoli decided that he would never challenge her to a drinking contest.I could die. “You want some?” Hidi held out her cup, which Nicoli made a face.“I don’t want your germs.”Nicoli went to take his own as Hidi laughed and drank even more. At least Hidi was fun when she drank, unlike Someone else at the table.“My sweet boy,” His mother slurred before she finished her glass. “Another,” She motioned, and Julia moved to pour. She quickly finished it before motioning for more.“Your Majesty?” Even Julia had to raise a brow. “What, it’s a party, is

*Ana*“How did this go so wrong?” I barely give the last attendees a chance to settle. But it shouldn’t have taken this long. But that is a problem for another day. I make a mental note to add to a list that only seems to grow. “Your Empress, it is late,” Someone from the crowd remarks with a few disgruntled agreements. “I said, what happened?” I repeat. “You dragged us in for that?” Someone scuffs as others join in.“This is war,” Others roll their eyes, looking between them. These things happen.”“These things?” I repeat as the door opens—a flash of red darts from the door to cling to the side. Why, that’s Bruno. I watch him curiously slip from the side to crunch down behind a pillar. He thoroughly covers himself in the fixture before I see his head peek out. He peers half of his face out as if to watch. What is he doing? “I understand you are upset, but Her Empress is too sensitive. This is why women shouldn’t-”“Care to repeat that!” Admiral Nugen snaps to shut them up immed

*Bruno*Bruno stood by with the breakfast tray as he waited for the maids to move. Once again, he found the hall blocked, And He couldn’t move around them this time. They were lounging and taking up all the space. Why is everyone so talkative today? Bruno frowned slightly. It wasn’t the first time he had to stop and wait. It seemed every hall was full of gossip. Servants and Nobles alike were engrossed in the latest topic and stopped where they were to talk.It was like they forgot other people needed to use the halls. Or maybe it was the fact that no one noticed he was there. Either way, Bruno could hear everything. “Excuse me-” Bruno tried, but this time would be no different. They ignored him to talk to each other.“Did you hear about Pave?” The first maid with a big nose went to the other. “The ambush, you mean?” The diminutive manservant went to have the short-armed maid speak up.“It’s all her Empress’s fault those good men died.”“Damn-ignorant girl.” The man shook his head

The thought made Belinda’s lips stiffen. *Ana*I would have thought that most would have gone ahead and skipped today, what with it being rather colder, but I quickly find I am wrong. Even in the cold, the rose garden is bustling with others. My simple walk in the cold winter morning is not so simple, turning more into a social outing, whether I like it or not.As such, I must present myself accordingly. I control my smile to be gentle and inviting just as the first wave comes over. “Your Empress, The noblemen bow in unison. “Sir Pendwick.” They nod their heads to him, next. “A beautiful morning, is it not?” Their outfits look fine, rich, and most importantly warm, for the cold weather.“It certainly is a clear sky,” I remark, noticing their noses turning pink from the cold. It makes me wonder how long they have been out here, and a better question, why. But I let the thought pass, thinking it better not to ask, simply wanting to get back to our walk.“Good morning,” I nod in their direction before turning with Pendwick in

How Alexander envied him, then. “Damn, and here I hoped we would talk a bit longer.” Alexander pouted.“He’s just excited about the news.” Johan went. “He’ll be back.”“Aye, I get that.” Alexander would have liked to have a bit more time together. He knew the years of traveling between Nochten and Dawny had put a distance between them. His own son not even sure to hug him anymore, Alexander reflected.“Still, I’d like just a moment.” It was like they were strangers to each other. But, then, it was the price he had to pay, after all. Alexander knew that something would have to give after putting more effort on Ana than him. So he couldn’t hold it against him. Besides, it was good to see his reaction. He’s just excited for Ana. *Nicoli*“Mother,” Nicoli barely spoke, short of breath, as he rounded the stairs. His mother already on her way down, with Julia in close tow. “You shouldn’t run, Nicoli. ” Belinda reprimed with a slight shake of her head, “it’s unbecoming of a Monarch.” But she stopped as if to wait. Seeming to want him to join her side. Something Nicoli had no problem doing. Because Nicoli knew what she really wanted. And he moved without needing to be asked. Taking her hand into the crook of his arm, it earned him a gentle smile back. Her angry already half dissolved by the act.And further diminished by Nicoli tacking on his best smile.“Forgive me, Mother, I was just excited to find Father coming home earlier than expected.” Nicoli went before noticing the slight pink hue around her eyes. Making his smile thin a little. She was crying again. His eyes darted to Julia. She gave the barest of nods to confirm he was right. But even then, she said nothing to betray her master. He knew he shouldn’t, it wasn’t wise to be distracted when climbing the stairs. But Nicoli was more coordinated than most. And he trusted his balance and memory of the castle. Even if he didn’t, Nicoli would have caved to his excitement anyway. It happened each time he got another letter. Nicoli would lose his crafted mature and pleasant demeanor, which everyone loved so much, for that of an excited child in an instant. Ana just had that effect on him.And Nicoli would not restrain himself when it came to her. Not anymore, not after so many years. And so, his eyes freely roamed over the letters. Passing over Hidi’s careful cursive and yellow seal for the red seal. It was Ana’s letter that he wanted to read most. Hidi’s of course, would be r

Her presence shocking no one. Why, it was such a common sight to see her now that Nettle nor the other servants even stirred. The silent old woman’s presence was nothing to them. She was simply a part of the process. And like always, she waited and watched for Nettle to approach with hawk-like precision. But regardless of her cold approach or silent pressure, Nettle still kept his own. He would not move faster, even for the queen’s handmaid. He only nodded to her in greeting.“Ah, Julia, I see you have ears like a cat.” he joked. “You arrived just in time. *Ana*Is it really time? Can I really do it at last? The thoughts swim in my head as I dash away from Father. The breeze lifts my shawl as I move. Can I write to Nicoli? I knew this day would come. But now that it’s here, I am almost overwhelmed. It doesn’t feel real to me. After going through so much, the first blood, the coronation, the trade problems, Mykhol’s departure, and countless other things. So much has happened since then. It just never felt like it would happen. But here I am, running. And it feels so unreal. Nothing does now. I can’t even feel the ground under my feet as I move. Everything seems to slow down, or I move even faster.I am only vaguely aware of the sound. It’s my heart. It hits against my chest like a drum and by the time I am back inside, a slight wave of dizziness is swimming over me.But I can’t stop. I won’t stop. I am driven like a moth to a flame. It is like I am floating through the halls. And my body feels weightless as I come to my door.“Naska!” I

*Ana*Is this where I get my work ethic from? It’s fair to make the argument because I am surprised how immediate Father is to start as soon as we get back inside. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so seriously. But he is. And I can’t say I’m not glad about it. When he said get to work, he meant it. Immediately after Mykhol departed, one of the first and most important things Father sought to fix was the supply issue. He made it all look so simple. A new trade route was established going through the Almony mountains, not our desert. And secondly, Almony, not our Nocthen merchants, would be used going forward. This, of course, caused quite the outburst in court, not to have any Nochten’s but foreigners involved. I included. But Father assured me that they would be reliable thanks to his own experience. Even Hidi has vouched for them through letters, among other things. As for the other things, Hidi sounded peeved in her letter. Something about doing surprise visits instead of correspo

Naska gave a sharp glare behind her to the crowd. Somehow, word had spread overnight of Mykhol’s departure. Thus, why did so many come despite the early morning? They had come to bid their farewells. On any other day, Naska would have warmed at the sight. It demonstrated how many gave their support to him. She would have gloated, prideful at how much power Mykhol had by the display. But the high number of girls in the crowd kept her escalations at bay. The sight of so many in the audience cooled Naska down with their pained expressions and wanton eyes. Eyes, which were all directed at Mykhol, no less. Naska clenched her hand at the sight.Back off, he’s mine. Naska wished she could break away right there and start throttling them. If I just explain things clearly, he won’t be upset. I’m sure if I explain myself. My reasoning, Mykhol will understand. He will understand. “Cousin, I want to explain myself.” I try again. “From a practical standpoint, you going back to school will be-”“Always so practically aren’t you?” Mykhol’s voice cuts through mine. “Almost to the point of being heartless.” His eyes are like fire. They burn and hurt as they stare down at me. “But I’m sure you’ve heard that one before, right?”I have to dart my eyes and swallow again.“Heartless?”I repeat as an awful memory resurfaces.
