*Queen Belinda*

Queen Belinda stared into the pair of red eyes. Even though Mykhol was exceptionally handsome, the hue of red warned Belinda to be wary. Even Lucifer was said to be beautiful. Thus, Queen Belinda was simultaneously intrigued and sickened by him.

It could be worse. Queen Belinda relented with a sip of tea. She could withstand a thousand of these blood-red eyes if it meant a minute less of staring into her eyes.

Half-blooded bastard of a child. Queen Belinda hid a sneer as she drank.

Why must I endure this all over again? It was a shame and a waste in her eyes. Belinda had thought she had gotten the point across last time. But apparently, she didn’t account for Anastasia’s optimism. Again, Belinda made a face as she drank.

It would have been God's mercy if she’d just died alongside her mother. How sweet would life be? Belinda mused.

But alas, he must not have been listening that day. What a pity.

Speaking of pity, Queen Belinda finally acknowledged the teen with a

*Ana* “Please, no more!” I squeal between tears. My sides are burning from laughing hard, and I can barely breathe. But this doesn’t stop Nicoli. He ignores my pleas for mercy and carries on his assault. “Bombs away!” Nicoli throws another snowball to explode over my back. “Ah!” The shock of ice-cold snow burrows underneath my collar. It's so cold that it almost burns. I immediately try to swat it out, but the snow seems to travel further. It's down too deep; I can’t get it. I must stand and suffer until it melts. Snow is so mean! I shiver as the snow again finds my skin. It sinks through my clothes like sand. The icy burn reminds me of the hot summer sand in Nochten. “It’s too cold,” my nose drips an icy snot before I peer back at him. “I want to go back inside.” “No way!” Nicoli blows a raspberry and is bent over. He gathers more snow in his gloved hands. “Not until you eat one- now, come here!” Nicoli charges at me. “No!” I threw up my arms and caught his hand. “Let go!

*Ana* The cup of cocoa is still hot in my hands, but I have yet to taste it. My mind can’t seem to focus, and Maddie quickly diverts me. I can’t help but get lost in her hands. It is mesmerizing to watch her at work. She makes it look so effortless. I halfway realize It’s comforting to watch her. Something so mundane can help me forget my thoughts. Thoughts that I would gladly forget because I don’t understand, and it scares me. “You’re rather quiet, Ana.” Maddie goes suddenly. She is still working on my hair, but I can see her brown eyes shift on me. “Penny for your thoughts?” “I-Where did you learn all this?” I can’t help but marvel after her. Maddie can even braid my hair without looking down. “How did you get so good?” “My mother taught me,” Maddie chuckles and finishes the knot. She steps back to check over the braid. “Your mother?” I repeat, and Maddie nods before smiling as if she approves her work. She moves for my headdress. “Uh-huh. Mama taught me and my sisters

*Ana* As we enter the great hall, I immediately dash my eyes around the room. There are many tables full of new faces. Many have come to celebrate Nicoli’s fifth birthday. But to my dismay, I can’t find the two people I want to see most. “They aren’t here yet?” I meant to whisper, but Mykhol must have heard me as he leaned. “Who’s not here?” Mykhol went with a look to the room. “Are you looking for someone?” “I- yes, the main table.” It is where the royal family should sit. I realize with a look at the room. It’s the only table that remains bare. “It’s empty.” “Oh them,” Mykhol immediately scoots his chair up to me. “I’m sure they’ll be coming.” Mykhol goes with a wave of his hand. He is so calm despite everything. I envy how he can be so composed at a time like this. I wish I could be because I am anything but. I feel as though I am on pins and needles. My breath seems to keep catching in my throat. I must tell myself to breathe and stay steady. But that’s easier said a

*Ana* “My good people,” Father’s voice booms to quiet the room. Immediately, people turn in their seats to look his way as Father lifts his glass. On cue, everyone moves to raise theirs. I lift mine as Mykhol refills his before doing the same. It must be pretty good for him to drink so much so quickly. I note that this must be Mykhol’s third glass. I wonder what it tastes like. Is it sweet? I hope so. I move to try a sip before I stop myself at the sensation. Someone is watching. I look up in time to see Stepmother wrap her arm around father. Queen Belinda looks utterly content just being at his side. While poor Nicoli, though, seems to grow impatient. He jitters a little in his seat, looking up at Father. “We are gathering here to celebrate my son and future heir to Dawny, Prince Nicoli.” King Alexander takes the chance to look over the room. “Though it seems just yesterday I was chasing this scamp about the palace with him butt naked-” “Hey!” Nicoli snaps in offense. His chee

Chapter # Drunkard (Edited and reviewed 11.7.23) *Maddie* “Don’t you think you should ease up on the wine, m’lord?” Maddie couldn’t hold back this time as she repoured what must have been; honestly, she had stopped counting by now. The teen didn’t seem bothered enough to keep track, either. Mykhol had been drinking non-stop since they returned—cup after cup emptied in minutes. If he gets sick and vomits, I swear to god- Maddie clenched her teeth. Even if this was part of the job, Maddie was not keen on mopping up human slop. Especially from the likes of him. Not that Mykhol cared at all. Mykhol was fully drunk now. His cheeks were flushed as his clothes became sloppy. In this state, Mykhol alluded to a casual aura that could come across as sex appeal. Any girl would swoon if they saw him right now, with his hair disheveled and his chest bare. Except for one, thank heaven. Ana’s oblivious nature relieved Maddie to no end. It was a godsend that the girl didn’t notice. His charms w

*Maddie* “What are you two doing?” Maddie could barely breathe through all her confusion. Her mind desperately tried to decipher what she was looking at. It was Ana and Mykhkol, but it was not like she had left them. No, she left them on the couches, separate. That’s how they were, not like this- Maddie’s mind struggled to take it all in in parts. “Oh, hello, Maddie.” Ana greeted, leaning away from Mykhol’s hand. “You changed quickly.” She smiled easily, not aware of anything. “Not quick enough,” Maddie breathed under her breath as she quickly moved to close the door behind her. I was only gone for a moment. Maddie knew she didn’t doddle. It was just a moment, ten minutes at the most. She only went to change her shirt and was right back. But in just that short time- If anyone else had walked in to see them- Maddie reeled with a new fear. Thank god it was just her and not another maid. The scandal alone- Maddie shuddered thinking of the aftermath. Who knows what else might ha

*Ana* “Finally,” I snap my eyes and sit as Maddie closes the door. It felt like she would never go. Not that I would ever wish her to leave; usually, I love Maddie's company. But tonight, things are different. Tonight, I have plans. I look up in time to catch a line of light under the tapestry. That must be Nicoli. He is quick. I think and push off the covers. What good timing. Or was he already waiting? I wonder as I hear a faint click of the hidden door open. The light of a lantern soon spills over the room. I squint my eyes before I can see the holder. “Brother Nicoli,” I greet with a skip in my heart. It is him, after all. “Is it safe?” Nicoli looks around. He pushes the tapestry higher to reveal the dark and deep hallway behind him. “Yes, I think so,” I whisper, and to make sure, cock an ear up to listen. Yes, Maddie is gone, but I find it odd. Her footsteps are quicker than usual. Wherever she is going, she must be in a hurry. Maybe she wants to get to bed? It

*Maddie* “Still out like a rock, huh?” Maddie joked as she came back into the room. It was now the third time since she first came to check on Ana. She sure must be exhausted. Maddie thought as she stole a glance from the clock back to Ana. The girl was still in bed and fast asleep, though it was already growing late into the morning. Well, thanks to someone, she went to bed late last night. Maddie frowned, remembering. “That little punk,” Maddie tsked with a roll of her eyes but let it go. None of it mattered right now. The morning was growing late, and Maddie had to decide enough was enough. “You’re gonna miss everything if you keep sleeping, hun.” Maddie went at last. It was time to wake the sleeping beauty. “Atti-up, kiddo!” Maddie pulled the covers from the bed. “Hmph!” Ana immediately groaned as the icy air stabbed through her nightgown. Her body curled up to conserve the heat as Maddie went to open the curtains. Ana immediately turned to bury her face into the pillow

But we just continue to stand in silence.“Are you upset?” “Does it matter?” Mykhol’s voice is so quiet that I almost miss it. “Cousin, I don’t want to fight.” I close my hands and take another moment to muster the courage. If I just explain things clearly, he won’t be upset. I’m sure if I explain myself. My reasoning, Mykhol will understand. He will understand. “Cousin, I want to explain myself.” I try again. “From a practical standpoint, you going back to school will be-”“Always so practically aren’t you?” Mykhol’s voice cuts through mine. “Almost to the point of being heartless.” His eyes are like fire. They burn and hurt as they stare down at me. “But I’m sure you’ve heard that one before, right?”I have to dart my eyes and swallow again.“Heartless?”I repeat as an awful memory resurfaces. Naska shook her head as a painful stretch ran up her chest. It was too awful.Lord Mykhol was being sent away? Just like that? *Ana*“The Military academy?!” I don’t know who is more shocked. It’s certainly the last thing I’d thought to hear today.“Now? Why?” I look to Mykhol and back to father before he plants back down. “But father-” I get an instant tap on the nose for using the wrong word. But Father winks at me before smiling. “Because Lord Mykhol said it himself, didn’t he?” Father goes and his servant Johan seems to step up.“His lordship has admitted inexperience,” Johan adds, be it more collected. “You did not finish schooling, if I am correct?” “That is-” Mykhol slightly shifts his lips as if trying to render the next word. But it never forms as someone explodes into laughter from the side. It’s Admiral Nugen, of all people. He is laughing so much that his face is pink.“The military academy?” He holds his sides still laughing. “Ah, this is too rich” Tears are in his eyes. And He continues to laugh so hard it shakes his whole body. “I can’t believe it.” He wheezes between another laugh. He seem

*Ana*“Papa, you are back,” I say, stifling a yawn. It is late, even for a vampire, and it would be a lie to say I wasn’t annoyed by Admiral Nugen’s appearance at my door. But despite being tired, I can not help but be happy as I find the man in the room. At last, he is back! It’s like a dream. And as soon as my eyes find him in the room. All I want to do is rush in and hug him.But wait, I shouldn't do that. I barely collect myself in time. That is not proper.I am an Empress, now, after all. I have to be more aware of my actions. Empresses do not hug on a whim. Even if he may be my father, I must pull myself in. I am not a child anymore. So, instead, I do my best to appear calm and collected. It’s two monarchs meeting each other, after all. I need to start the practice of acting more maturely. My voice, however, despite my desires, cracks with my inner excitement. “I didn’t receive word you were coming.” In truth, I haven’t received any letters at all. From him or Nicoli for som

He should have though, because now his eyes cursed him.“Not long,” Johan answered as the door opened. The familiar smell of sand immediately washed over them. Alexander took in a deep breath and closed his eyes nostalgically. It’s good to be back. Alexander relaxed as everything flooded back to him. Though he loved his country, something about Nochten weighed in his heart.Maybe it was because of their past, or it was Parsul’s home. But now, he had other reasons. • Will Bear the Moon   Is It an Act

*Mykhol* Now, standing left behind on the platform with Ana gone along with Admiral Nugen and Sir Pendwick, Mykhol breathed out. He hadn’t realized he was holding his breath till now. “How did he…get the book?” Mykhol dropped his smile by inches until it was fully gone to a straight line. That, Mykhol hated to admit, could have turned out much much worse. Despite his planning, the idea of the book falling into the wrong hands had never occurred to him.And in the very hands of Admiral Nugen of all people. However, it had, somehow, someway. Mykhol again felt something shift under his skin as things were adding up. Someone took that from Father’s safe. Someone knew they had it. Moreover, they knew the lock combination to get it out.Something which, as far as Mykhol was aware, should have only been three people: Father, Mother, and himself. So it seems we have a little mouse on our hands. Mykhol smirked as he glanced back to the corner. But the corner was already empty. The silent b

Did he just admit that he is-? No, it can’t be- I breathe to catch myself again. Mykhol wouldn’t do that. He would never- No, I shake my head. It can’t be. Mykhol is family. And families wouldn’t betray each other.I have to have misheard. But Mykhol doesn’t look back at me. He is stepping down the platform. And meets Admiral Nugen at his side. “Lord Mykhol?” Admiral Nugen stiffens “What is the meaning of this?” Mykhol however, does not look at him, instead he turns to face the room.“You heard correctly. I am responsible.” Mykhol goes with a stronger voice. “I have failed you all.” “What is he talking about?” Someone whispers.“Responsible for what?” More start to perk up.“Mykhol?” Aunt Funda, meanwhile, steps up. Her hands are clenched up at her chest, her face dead white. “Honey, what are you doing

*Ana* “Your Empress?” Aunt Funda coughed to make me blink awake again. I can suddenly make her out.“Are you…alright?”“That-yes,” I say but in truth I am not sure. How long was I just sitting there? Staring off into nothing? By looking over the room, it might have been a good long time. Because now, everyone is looking at me. I have their attention. That’s a rarity on its own. That’s right, we are in court. I suddenly remember as if my mind was slowly unthawing. I was holding a meeting today. Because Admiral Nugen has- My thoughts stop again. But their stares prompt me to need to do something.Yes. I think sluggishly. *Mykhol*“Mother, Father,” Mykhol greeted, feeling eyes on him almost immediately as he entered the courtroom. It was almost like everyone was waiting more for him. Maybe they are, especially the women. Mykhol smiled at no one in particular. The action set more than a few women to react. Mykhol could hear the soft dreamy sighs and underlining lust for him. It helped swell his pride. They were so easy. But they were not what held his attention as he lifted a brow at the startling discovery. “Is she still not here?” Mykhol noted the throne was empty. Ana was nowhere to be seen. When I’m already this late? How very unlike her. It wasn’t like Ana to break habit. But Mykhol relaxed. If she wasn’t here, all the better. She wouldn’t notice he was tardy too. Though it would be a bit funny if she did. Because then she would want to know why. And wouldn’t that be a fun surprise? Something caught in his chest at the idea. How would she react if I told her what I was just doing? Hearing al
