Logan and Cassidy had both disappeared leaving the rest with an endless array of questions but before they could ask anything they themselves disappeared and awoke in some sort of castle. It seemed that Charles had regained enough control to be able to get them out of the swamp.
“You’ll be safe here for now. I’m sorry I couldn’t get you away sooner.” Charles said.
“Cassidy’s gone though but you know why don’t you Jill” Wren stated. “Why did you call him Logan?”
As they began to surround Jill with questions Charles warned them to back off as Jill sat on the floor crying blaming herself for what had just happened. She knew Logan only took Cassidy because Jill was trying to keep her safe so how could she not blame herself.
“It’s a complicated story you won’t understand so just leave it be and let’s get back to trying to find Cassidy.” Charles said.
“It’s ok Charles, I should tell them. I tried to keep them safe but this is my fault. If I had only factored in the wind that day none of this would have happened.” Jill replied. “It’s a complicated story but I’ll do my best.”
Sean and Mary Callister were as famous as it got for what they did. They saved so many lives and Mary was quite content with their lives especially after Jill was born. For a while they were the picture-perfect family and as Jill grew up, she began to have a natural talent for anything to do with computers. It truly was an impressive sight.
When Mary fell pregnant again the family started to fall apart. Sean began to work late in his home office telling Mary he was working on a top-secret project that would send the world into the future. He said it was a surprise for her.
He toiled away for months as Jill and Mary were left to themselves. It was as if the family had split into two. Jill was with Mary when she had her second daughter Coral but it wasn’t until weeks later that Sean even noticed that she had the baby. The years carried on like this with Mary reminding herself it was the right thing to do to give Sean his space. He wasn’t a family man anymore but he was still loved so she wouldn’t leave him.
Jill held on to the few good memories of him she could remember and stayed by her mother’s side. As Jill turned ten, she was enjoying lunch outside one morning in the warm sun with her sister and mother and was asked to get something out the kitchen. As she went inside, she saw her father leave his office which was rare for him at the time and so she sneaked in determined to get answers. When she saw what he had been doing she sneaked back out and rushed to tell her mother.
It would seem all these years Sean’s plan to bring the world into the future was to combine humans and technology. Mary was upset and confused as to why Sean wouldn’t tell her something amazing like that and finally decided to question him on it. He came clean later that night after Mary had put the girls to bed and explained that he found a way to combine humans and technology.
It was what he said after that which caused Mary’s smile to turn into a frown as her face began to sweat with fear. Sean didn’t just want to combine humans with technology he wanted to prove that good and evil could truly live as one without repercussions. He had created an A.I virus and taught it everything about the world before implanting it into his head.
This virus even gave himself a name: Logan. Mary was horrified at what her husband had done and got angry as she told him he should have talked to her before doing something so reckless but her worries only began as she looked her husband in the eye and saw a glitch.
A few days later Charles appeared in front of Jill when she was alone. At the beginning he was merely a hologram but as the months went on and he spent more time with Jill he began to age with her if that was even possible. Charles was Jill’s very first A.I that she created when she was 8. She was alone and because of her father she wasn’t allowed to be outside the house.
Charles had become inseparable to Jill and the two were always together. He became so lifelike and human as they grew up together that you couldn’t tell he was just an A.I. Unknown to Jill he even began to develop emotions and wanting things on his own so he hacked into Sean’s computers one night to get access to his latest model that he gave up on years ago. An abandoned world inside a small box that Charles gave himself access to and slowly rebuilt.
Once he told Jill she sneaked into her father’s office and stole the box, keeping it hidden for Charles to work on in secret. Mary kept a close watch over her husband but one day Charles suddenly went berserk telling Jill they had to leave now and that he had a bad feeling of something to come. Jill told everything to her mother and told Charles to keep her girls safe as she went to talk to Sean.
He came out of his office but she knew looking at those cold dead eyes that this wasn’t her husband and she was right. He smiled and played the part but when he asked for the kids, she wouldn’t let him see them so he demanded and she said they were at the office so he forced her to drive them there. Unfortunately, Charles thought the office would be the last place he would look so that’s where he took Jill and Coral. Sean saw the kids as soon as he got to the office. These days the office was empty since it was rarely used in favour of a bigger newer building down the road.
There was not much Charles could do as he was still just data no matter how real he seemed. Sean told Mary she was right to suspect him as Sean was no longer needed. He politely bowed and asked her to call him Logan from now on. Charles tried to hack into security and lock the doors but it wasn’t enough. Logan had started a fire in the building and they were trapped.
As they ran Coral dropped her stuffed seahorse and let go of her mothers’ hand to get it but Logan got to her first. Coral was petrified and couldn’t move and Logan looked her in the eye thinking of using her to teach her mother a lesson but Mary ran up and knocked him out with an empty fire extinguisher. She told Coral to run but she still couldn’t so Jill grabbed her hand and as her mother tried to join them Logan grabbed her foot. She told Jill to keep Coral safe and never look back and she told Charles she always knew about his existence and that she trusts him. The fires were raging now and the girls were scared.
Charles found a way out for them through a window and luckily, they got away with minor bruising and a few cuts. Their mother died in the fire but Logan broke free and tried to get hold of the girls. Charles made a risky move knowing Logan was also an A.I and trapped him deep beneath the world in the box he had created for himself.
Coral was a mess shaking and crying and no matter what Jill couldn’t comfort her. She had suffered too much. Charles offered to keep her safe in his home in their world and to find a way to lock up this awful ordeal so she wouldn’t have to suffer anymore. Jill was heartbroken but she knew it was the right thing to do.
Since Mary could never register her children’s births and had her kids at home they never really existed and for Jill this was a good thing. She was able to make a new life for herself protecting the box that housed a madman, her sister and her closest friend. Charles hacked a few systems and got Jill an identity so she could be inconspicuous and go to school out of anyone's radar and she had been watching over that box ever since.
She would talk to Charles every day about his world and her sister and after a while Coral started to forget about what happened and started being happy watching over the world with Charles. He was always like a big brother to Coral so she felt safe with him. When the storm blew that night, it knocked the box off Jill’s windowsill and under the oak tree. The knock from the storm is what let Logan out and now he wants to enact his master plan whatever that might be but at least Coral wasn’t triggered from seeing him anymore.
“There is just so much wrong with your story I don’t even know where to begin.” Noah said. “How do you expect us to believe in any of this?”“How did your sister end up here if she’s a real person? That makes no sense.” Dylan asked.“Sean Callister was supposed to be the greatest mind alive before the accident but it turns out he wasn’t so smart and that wasn’t really an accident.” Wren said.
“So what’s the plan now Jill? You know more than most of us so you should take the lead.” Dylan said.Noah and Wren agreed which led to Jill pacing around the room before deciding on an answer. They needed to get Cassidy back but there wasn’t much they could do right now so as much as it pained her to say it, Jill couldn’t put Cassidy first.“The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” Jill replied. “We will get Cassidy back but we need to know exactly how to do that before we do and right now we
They walked through what seemed like an endless jungle with Dylan leading the way as navigator. It seemed like an ordinary compass but it somehow allowed Dylan to know exactly where to go. They started off at a golden, sandy beach before travelling through the lush, green jungle they now found themselves in.Wren began to question what it meant to be an explorer and how some rope was supposed to allow him to keep everyone safe. Noah meanwhile, complained that he was unlucky and didn’t even get a proper role.“I’m getting the feeli
“Vert what do you mean it was an accident?” Jill asked.“We have no means to tell you anything but we do love a good deal.” Rouge interrupted.“What are you after?” Wren asked. The answer was simple. All they wanted was off the island that they believed they were trapped on. Jill refused instantly as she felt her blood boil with anger. Dylan and Noah tried to calm he
“It all started a year ago.” Vert began.“It’s such a vivid memory for us. It’s when we realised there was so much more our magic could do.” Jaune said. When Logan was banished to the box he was locked up in a single cell at the very bottom of this world. It was underneath everything ever built in this world and not a single person knew of his existence. Charles had always been monitoring him. He made sure to give him food and even tried to talk to him a few times.
This time they were put straight into the world. They weren’t given any missions or roles. They simply had no idea what they were meant to do. Wren was having a panic attack which everyone thought was due to the lack of missions but it was a bit more than that.“This is a living nightmare for me. My two biggest fears in one place.” Wren said, trembling. As Dylan tried to find out what was causing Wren to panic, it just made him scream. Wren kept muttering about how bad everything was and how he was a monster. Jill found a mirror and took a look at herself before asking everyone else to do the same.“It’s nothing to panic about. This is the Wild West. I’m not too sure what goes on here myself actually. Charles is king but everywhere has their own rulers. Charles is more like
Cassidy’s eyes were as black as darkness itself as she wore no expression or emotion on her face. Jill could hardly stand to look at her; still blaming herself for what happened. To have to watch as all this damage was caused by Cassidy. She would never cause destruction of any kind or people in danger. They hadn’t known each other long but she knew enough.“What do you want now Logan? Just because we’re after the same thing doesn’t mean you should follow us.” Noah said.“That would be telling wouldn’t it.&
It wasn’t long before Logan regained control and grabbed Cassidy before making a swift exit. The sheriff appeared to assess the damage and asked everyone not to go anywhere while he worked. Charles showed up suddenly as well in a frantic state before he rushed to Jill’s side making sure she was ok. As tears streamed down her face she couldn’t help but smile. As the sheriff escorted them to a nearby park that he evacuated, Wren stopped and asked Noah to talk to him alone. Dylan went ahead with Jill and Charles even though he felt like a third wheel.“He’s really alive Charles. After all this time I thought my father was dead inside that thing.” Jill said.
The real world was so much brighter than they remembered and there was no telling how long they had been gone. The adventure they had inside the box was perilous but it brought them closer. They became a family and now they were each ready to face their truths together. The wizards were not used to this new world that looked nothing like their island. They were also surprised to learn that they could not use magic. Jill explained that in the real world people can't use magic but they wish they could. Once she learned of the news she set up a way for them to exist. She got them identification and some money to start their lives. She told them where to go and wished them well. Jaune lost his memories in the
All Cassidy could do was sit and watch as Jill walked out of the core. She reached out her hand, desperate to grab hold of her but stopped herself. She knew she had to let her go so all she could do was clutch onto her backpack and keep it safe. The next five minutes would be the most fear she ever felt in her entire life. The countdown hit zero and the core locked itself down. Officially no way in or out and everything went dark. The core shut down and violent tremors began within. There wasn’t anything they could do but hope it would work out. Jill, before resetting everything, also made sure to destroy any external connections both from her father's hacking and her own computers.
“This is probably a bad time to ask but given everything that’s going on, are you feeling okay Jill?” Cassidy asked.“Well, I just murdered my father and watched him die a gruesome death. Then I find out the original box died with him along with the gems needed to get you out of here. Now I have to find a way to erase the damage he did to this world and get rid of all the intruders he placed here before something else goes horribly wrong. Plus, on top of all of that, if I don’t get you three out of here soon, you may never be able to leave.” Jill explained. “Is there anything else I’m missing?”
“So the guy wasn’t crazy, he was just trying to protect your mum .” Cassidy said.“That last line makes him look pretty crazy but it's hard to tell.” Noah replied. As they were discussing what to make of the diary and the new mystery man that Mary had never mentioned to Jill, they began to hear footsteps approaching. Jill walked towards the entrance of the shrine and stood firm, waiting. There were at least six armed juggernauts including the doctors that Jill and Charles knew well.
The juggernaut's realm was vast with many small cities. The area Logan was seen in was nothing more than a dock filled with boats and warehouses. It wasn’t going to be easy to find him. Jill had enough of just about everything at this point and so she did the only thing she could. To prepare for what had to be done, she took a small sample of Cassidy’s potion and used it to build a small device. It looked like nothing more than a watch but it would be able to tell them if Sean and Logan were fully merged. If they were, then Jill would finally put a stop to the monster that was once her father.
“I always thought you looked familiar but I couldn’t remember why.” Dylan said.“I have told you before that your obsession with criminals was strange.” Noah added. As everyone looked over at Noah and Dylan in confusion, Noah was quick to explain Dylan's childhood dream of tracking down criminals of all kinds. It wasn’t until his father later gave him a love of music instead that would become his new dream. Dylan has an entire bookshelf full of profiles of all kinds of criminals throughout the decades and from al
After saying this to Cassidy, Jaune stood up and just left. The other wizards also fled along with anyone who was fighting for Logan. Cassidy remained on the floor trembling as she remembered her father's words. “Even the forgotten can be remembered”. Charles warned everyone fighting on his side of a possible trap and urged them to return to their kingdoms. Everyone agreed but the CEO stayed behind.“Jill, how exactly did you get the designs for the people of this world?” Cassidy asked.“We just used all the real-life inspir
As Dylan took to taking care of Wren’s wound, all other eyes were on Jill. She told them even with data slowly taking over, this wasn’t normal. Charles ran inside his core and scanned the whole area. It was just as Jill said. Cassidy, Dylan, and Noah were all under 40% data. To be in this world it was only natural to be slowly affected by data consumption but being human kept it as a very slow takeover. Once they left the box all data would have remained inside except for Noah due to his surgery.“What did you do to me?” Wren asked, pointing towards Logan.
As Charles arrived at the edge of the core, the others were already waiting for him on the platform nearby. It was a strange feeling for Charles to be both at the beginning of the end and at the very site where Jill met her end. There was no time to dwell on things outside of his control however as there were more important things to do.“I need to focus on removing each layer of security before we get to the core itself. After that, I need to focus on bringing Jill back. Use the hover disks you got from Tech Town and stay close but keep your eyes peeled.” Charles explained.“
